Product Description
Championship Gymnastics represents an entirely new approach to the study and understanding of gymnastics movement. It is the only textbook on the market that bridges the gap between theory and practice. Whether you are a gymnastics performer, teacher, coach, or even a judge, this textbook seamlessly weaves together the "science" of biomechanics with the "art" of gymnastics movement.Rather than laboring on complex physics formulas, fundamental principles of biomechanics are clearly explained and presented in layman's terms. Easy to read and expertly illustrated, readers are guided effortlessly through a "conceptualization process" for developing ideal movement patterns. The book includes over 120 technical illustrations by noted artist and gymnastics coach Jim Stephenson. Gymnastics skills are described clearly and illustrated progressively to demonstrate that "similarities" in gymnastics movement patterns far outweigh "differences." As a result, seemingly complex gymnastics skills are reduced to simple, easy-to-understand patterns of motion. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Championship Gymnastics: Biomechanical Tecniques for shaping Winners
I have been involved in gymnastics all of my life. I was a gymnast as an AAU, USGF, High School and Collegiate competitor.
I am now a coach, Nationaljudge and a club owner. I read Jerry's first book 20 years ago and waited for his next one to come out. Well it is finally here. I think that it is the best book for a beginning level coach, judge or athlete to read through an elite coach, judge or athlete. Please read this one it is for all to enjoy.
Thanks Jerry for all that you have done for us. Also thanks to Jim Stevenson for the great art work.

5-0 out of 5 stars not enough stars
I've been teaching gymnastics for 20 years.I'd acquired a copy of Jerry's earlier book, "Biomechanics of Women's Gymnastics" and found it to contain clear descriptions of how certain skills should be performed, and from those descriptions constructed the mental models I've used to teach these skills.I find that "Championship Gymnastics" does an amazing job of explaining "why" a skill works - a key element in upgrading my mental models and my athletes' performance.By page 65, I decided I'd already gotten my money's worth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the time to read.
As expected, Dr. George has again produced a definitive volume of scientific as well as practical methods for gymnastics training. This new book, though technical and concise, is surprisingly not difficult reading.Special to me are the lyrical, almost poetic, quips opening each chapter and woven throughout which is uncharacteristic of a book like this. Such inspired enthusiasm must be born of a deeper affection and respect for the role this sport can play in the life and growth of a child. All in all, with quality graphics and illustrations, George has skillfully amassed a very substantial composition well suited to everyone interested in understanding the complexities of gymnastics preparation and development.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Must-Read" for every Gymnastics Coach
Dr. Jerry George is one of the finest gymnastics technicians and teachers in the world. In his book Championship Gymnastics, he breaks down movement technique into key elements that allow the gymnast to go from basic to elite movements successfully. Using this book every coach will get a clear picture of what they need to teach, and what every gymnast needs to understand to perform their best. The detailed illustrations give the teacher, coach, or gymnast a clear picture of the "key" parts of a gymnastics movement (the secret to the recipe) which is often missing. This book is a must-read for anyone involved in gymnastics.

As a gymnastics coach myself for 45 years, from beginners to Olympicv level, I feel Championship Gymnastics is the best "gymnastics teaching" book I've ever read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for Beginners
This is the prequel to the "I Can Do Gymnastics: Essential Skills for Intermediate Gymnasts". It has easier moves then that one, with diagrams and instructions to explain each move. This book also has a chapter about landing safely and includes procedures to practice. It has instructions for most of the apparatus, and it includes the difficulty levels which are A for the easiest, B for medium, and C for hardest. The book is clear and easily understood by beginers. It can also be used by gymnasts who are on the competitive level to improve their basic skills.

3-0 out of 5 stars I'ts Okay!
This book was pretty good and showed me a lot of gymnastics moves, but I knew a lot of them from my gymanstics classes and all it had was a simple diagram showing you how to do a move with some instructions. In a way, it was kind of dumb. I liked it okay, but definitly do NOT read it if you are a gymnast higher then Level 3!

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Basic

This book is perfect for any fan of Dominique Moceanu. You learn so much about her, starting from her birth all the way up to the 1996 Olympics. This was a very vivid and detailed biography. I really thought it was cool to read about the gymnastics school she used to train at before she went to Karolyi's. It tells about all her early compititions and experiences. It felt like I really knew Dominique Moceanu! I learned so much from this book, and like Krista Quiner's other gymnastics biographys, this was a great one!

Product Description

This book explores, analyses, and explains divergent ideologies and practices of gymnastics in selected European nations. It reconstructs the ex- and import processes from Europe to America and determines the processes, interrelationships and transformations of these "transatlantic movements" in their new home country. The book offers a more complete understanding of the role of gymnastics and expressive movements in cultural and ideological transmission over time and identifies the impact of these concepts on American physical education, sports systems and sports cultures.

The main focus of the book lies in the two decades before and after World War I. This concentration on a specific historical epoch allows us to identify parallel, but also different developments of the various forms of gymnastics and of the transfer and implementation processes.

The volume covers the transfer and impact of German Turnen, Czech Sokol and the Delsarte system in North America. In addition, it traces the influences of French gymnastics in South America and describes the tours of the world-renowned Danish gymnastic reformer Nils Bukh in both Americas. A focus will be the "import" of gymnastics, but also on the adaption processes of these different concepts and their integration into the American culture.

This book was previously published as a special issue of the International Journal of the History of Sport.
