5-0 out of 5 stars Great BookHang Gliding Training Manual
One of my old, high school friends started hangliding a few years back and it really sounded like fun. This book is really helpful in teaching the basics on hang gliding.I read through the book twice and was much more prepared for when he gave me my first lesson with one of his gliders. He was amazed how quickly I picked it up, for a first time flyer.I still have a lot to learn though, that will mostly just come with experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
This book has a complete comprehensive description of all aspects of Hang Glinding, better than that only the actual flying itself!
One of the very best sports "how to" books ever, this book rocks!

5-0 out of 5 stars A complete and well written guide to hang gliding !
Hi there,

I bought this guide since the issues in German were outdated and are not actualized anymore due to the Paragliding hype of the last years. Dannis Pagen has come up with the most complete and elaborate guide to hang gliding for beginners, with many clear hand drawn images and expert advice on many (seemingly) smaller things (for example how to set up the glider, providing a pre-checklist....). The book covers pretty much everything from beginner to intermediate skill and carefully explains everything there is to know in great detail(from the first flight to different starting methods, soaring, thermaling etc etc).

I can only recommend this book if someone has just started to fly or for pilots that want to refresh their theoretical knowledge about flying ... everybody will find helpful advice in this book and it is just fun to read!

Product Description
Davis Straub tells the story of the dramatic 10-year race to fly farther than anyone has ever gone in a hang glider.

From the historic 1990 flight that first broke the 300-mile barrier, through ten years of adventure and challenge, this is a first-hand account of the driven individuals who struggled against each other and against nature to set the next hang gliding world distance record. We follow them from the northwest Colorado wilderness and across the rugged New Mexico desert to the plains of Australia and the Florida swamps. We share the exhilaration of soaring at 10,000 feet on a tiny unpowered craft light enough to carry on your shoulder. We feel the thrill of racing against the worlds best, and the shock of loss in two tragic accidents. Ultimately the trail leads to south Texas, where painstaking analysis of weather patterns finally pays off for a small group of pioneering pilotsand the story begins again. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice little book, but there are many errors
It's a nice little book, reflections of flying hang gliders and living life. But given such a great subject, the content is a little unoriginal and it never really lifts off. There are some nice quotations and some cute little pictures.

However there are serious mistakes that show a lack of attention to detail -- something every pilot should strive to avoid! Hemingway is credited with a slightly misquoted Ursula K. LeGuin line from 'The Left Hand of Darkness.' Other quotes are not quite exactly as originally written. And there is a huge aerodynamical blunder when she states in words and a diagram that the four forces in glider flight are lift, drag, gravity and momentum. Er mo what? Powered aircraft have thrust, gliders have no thrust. And momentum is most certainly not a force. The force for airspeed acceleration is provided by the forward component of gravity. This is basic stuff, and to have a chapter in a hang glider book titled 'The Forces of Flight' and then get them so wrong shows a fundamental lack of flying knowledge. The author also states that, "I don't know if visualization works" -- well, lots of serious research shows visualization works great for motor coordination tasks, and it is used everyday by aerobatic and competition pilots.

I feel a little bad critizing such a nice little book from what I'm sure is a kind motivational speaker. But it never soars free, and the mistakes and aerodynamic errors are hard to ignore. I hope you find this review helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Painting a word picture
Flying by the Seat of Your Pants was a great read from start to finish. But, even more important, it is the kind of book you can leave by your bedside and when life, or just the day, isn't doing what you want it too, pick up the book and you'll find something that takes your mind to a different place and perspective.

Ms. Waugh explains the sensations of hang gliding and as you read, it automatically relates to different things in life.I've read some parts several times and each time had another question answered.

I use this book to bring me back to basic principles of what it takes to get through life.

Scattered in each chapter are simple, true sayings that cut through my minds clutter and simplify my thoughts.

To successfully hang glide, you need to prepare and know what you're doing. This book goes through the steps to be a successful hang glider and those steps work to bring success in life.

My copy show signs of being well used.I'll have to replace it soon.

Editorial Review

Product Description
"Hang-Gliding from Helicon" presents more than forty new poems by Daniel Hoffman and a generous selection from six of his previous books.

Hoffman's poetry is a celebration of life, yet some of his poems have dark implications. "The City of Satisfactions" is a journey into the haunted heart of the American dream. "The Center of Attention" portrays a suicidal man being taunted by a crowd to jump from a bridge, and "Witnesses" explores the aftermath of a car wreck on a desolate stretch of rural highway.

Each of Hoffman's poems represents a striking response to the moments of being alive. "Hang-Gliding from Helicon" affirms the power of poetry to make possible the acceptance and transformation of life. Daniel Hoffman has given us the remarkable statement of his deep poetic faith. ... Read more
