5-0 out of 5 stars Title says it correctly
As a matter of fact, when I purchased hang gliding lessons they provided this training manual as part of the package. Everything that has been covered so far in lessons is referenced in this training manual. The technicals of weather and how to guage it are very well written. Despite being an older manual, alot of the Hang Glider components are still in use of the beginner and intermediate hang gliders in use today.

Although I do not believe you should rely on this book alone to learn how to hang glide, I think every school which instructs can use this book as the reference guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars PAGEN BOOKS
Everydetail to Hang glide is given in pagen books.Experience and subject matter expressed in alogical manner and consolidation chapters hardens the skill of the student.
Pagen books and the complementary videos encourage people to soar just like eagles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent hang gliding book
An excellent book: Well written, loaded with diagrams and information, great for the novice. I have spent good money on disappointing hang gliding books and videos. This manual, however, is worth every penny.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a keeper...
I've bought other HG books & returned or trashed them. The cheaper books are way to basic. Dennis & his wife made this manual easy to read & understand plus the drawings are right to the point. Even if you never hang glide, but are interested in it, this is the book to buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning Hang Gliding Skills for Beginner to Intermediate Pi
The Hanggliding training manual is an absolute must for the beginner. I started Hanggliding in 1974, and got his books as a birthday present a few years after. Then I started to learn and understand the whole concept of theprincipals of flight much better. The illustartions are great I use them inmy teaching the sport of Hanggliding, and the articles are ease to follow. So after a days out with the school go and get yourself lost in this book. ... Flying by the Seat of Your Pants was a great read from start to finish. But, even more important, it is the kind of book you can leave by your bedside and when life, or just the day, isn't doing what you want it too, pick up the book and you'll find something that takes your mind to a different place and perspective.

Ms. Waugh explains the sensations of hang gliding and as you read, it automatically relates to different things in life.I've read some parts several times and each time had another question answered.

I use this book to bring me back to basic principles of what it takes to get through life.

Scattered in each chapter are simple, true sayings that cut through my minds clutter and simplify my thoughts.

To successfully hang glide, you need to prepare and know what you're doing. This book goes through the steps to be a successful hang glider and those steps work to bring success in life.

My copy show signs of being well used.I'll have to replace it soon.

An adequate introduction to the sport, but very thin. Gives only the basics, but lacks detail. The book could also use a good editor.

5-0 out of 5 stars A clear introduction to hang gliders and flying skills.
The books written by Dennis Pagen were recommended to me by my first HG instructor. This book is very easy to read, even for people who do not fly themselves. It gives you information about the characteristics of gliders and why they work the way they do. There is also a section about thermals and how to make use of them. What I liked most about the book is that everything is explained from the source but in a very practical manner with a lot of simple, yet effective drawings. This book gives the beginning pilot a good insight into why the techniques he/she has learned are working. ... Read more

Now Jim's back, in company with partnerMaggie and Bob Grant, as joint editor of another huge ( 260-page) anthology of free flight stories. Subtitled Fantastic flying stories - from the hearts of those who live the dream, Hang gliding spectacular contains 70-odd tales from around the world on what this magical game of ours is all about.Loosely headed under engaging themes such as Outrunning the dogcatcher and Old dogs, new tricks, the mostly American authors (there are two from the UK) cover every aspect of flying, and every possible emotion. Many of the contributions are from regular pilots with no great claim to fame except their love of hang gliding and their desire to write it down; others are from known US names like Larry Fleming, Tiky Mashy, Mark Vaughn and (of course) Davis Straub. All of them will echo some experience of your own, and all have the end result of making you want to just get up there again. It's not a book you'll want to read right through from end to end in alinear fashion; more something to keep by your bedside or in your car and dip into when you need another hit. It's difficult to pick favourites, butone or two of these accounts, like Larry Fleming's Cloud racing, a tale ofpushing just a little too hard in the Owens, and Doug Johnson's The day the Spud Club was formed, about the taking of the Chelan Butte distance record, are examples of all that is fine about the all-on-your-ownsome endeavour that is XC flying. There is an outline of each of the contributors at the back of the book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A great book on the mental aspects of winning hang gliding.
I had met Rich Pfeiffer when I read this book, but I did not know him. After I read this book, I thought I might know him pretty well. This book is the ultimate book on winning hang gliding competitions. Not particularly the section on the equipment. It was written when the equipment was much less sophisticated than today. But it describes the mental preparation for winning that one must have in order to win consistantly without depending on luck. In a fairly esoteric sport, this is the only bookwhich deals with "Inner Hang gliding". This would be a trite phrase except that for Hang Gliding it is so true. If you want to win, you must go prepared to win and it starts inside your head. This book has been out of print for at least ten years and was probably not printed in great quantities in the first place, directly appealing as it does to only a few thousand people, but it should be considered the book to have for the aspiring hang gliding competitior. ...
