Excerpt: A carriage is a wheeled vehicle for people, usually horse-drawn; litters (palanquins) and sedan chairs are excluded, these being litters or wheelless vehicles. The carriage is especially designed for private passenger use and for comfort or elegance, though some are also used to transport goods. It may be light, smart and fast or heavy, large and comfortable. Carriages normally have suspension using leaf springs, elliptical springs (in the 19th century) or leather strapping. A public passenger vehicle would not usually be called a carriage terms for these include stagecoach, charabanc and omnibus. The word carriage (abbreviated carr or cge) is from Old Northern French cariage, to carry in a vehicle. The word car, then meaning a kind of two-wheeled cart for goods, also came from Old Northern French about the beginning of the 14th century; it was also used for railway carriages, and was extended to cover automobile around the end of the nineteenth century, when early models were called horseless carriages. A carriage is sometimes called a team, as in "horse and team". A carriage with its horse is a rig. An elegant horse-drawn carriage with its retinue of servants is an equipage. A carriage together with the horses, harness and attendants is a turnout or setout. A procession of carriages is a cavalcade. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Harness racing in New Zealand is more often called trotting in the "old school" rather than the more fashionable name of "harness racing". The sport is long standing with events being held as early as 1864. In New Zealand trotting as a sport involves both pacing and trotting competitions for Standardbred racehorses. Trotting races were held as part of the programme of some of the galloping meetings in the Otago Southland area as early as 1864. The first totalisators were introduced about this time. They faced opposition from a curious alliance of bookmakers and anti-gambling factions but were approved by the Clubs and licensed by the Colonial Secretary. The first trotting race on a racecourse in Canterbury, in 1875, before the totalisator was introduced, the stake was only about a "tenner" (£10), but the match created a lot of interest. About 1880, Lower Heathcote Racing Club was founded, supporting gallops, but added trotting events to its programme, giving smaller stakes. Some years later the club discontinued gallops and became the Lower Heathcote Trotting Club, which gave stakes ranging from £15 to £35. From these early stages, the sport has developed with top races and top horses from then right up to the present day. NZ trotter Uncle PetrikaIn New Zealand the major races include the Auckland Trotting Cup and the New Zealand Trotting Cup as well as the Noel J Taylor Memorial Mile and the New Zealand Messenger Championship for four year olds. There are also the New Zealand Derby and the Great Northern Derby for three year olds, and the Dominion Handicap and Rowe Cup for trotters. The Harness Jewels raceday (the end-of year championships for two, three and four year o...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=22491597 ... Read more

Excerpt: Victory Tilly (born on May 3, 1995) is a Swedish former racing trotter by Quick Pay out of Icora Tilly by Fakir du Vivier. His most prestigious victories include the Swedish Trotting Derby (Swedish: Svenskt Travderby), Elitloppet, Nat Ray Trot and Gran Premio della Lotteria. At the end of his career, the gelding had earned US$5,168,902 (4,085,814). He was awarded the Swedish Horse of the Year Award in 2000 and 2002. Victory Tilly was born on May 3, 1995, in Almunge, Uppsala municipality, Sweden. He spent his years as a colt at his breeder's, Stall Tilly. Glen Norman was in charge of the training of the stable's race horses, and, thus, was Victory Tilly's trainer in the horse's early years. During this period, as a two-year-old, Victory Tilly was castrated because of testicle problems. Being gelded, Victory Tilly would in his career be ineligible to enter major French events like Prix d'Amérique, that are open only for stallions and mares. On June 17, 1998, Victory Tilly made his racing debut at Solvalla, Stockholm. As the favourite of a race for trotters 3 or 4 years old, he won by a margin of 4 and ½ length. In the debut, as well as in all but one of the other races during the 3-ye...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=21294004 ... Read more

Average Customer Review: 3.0 out of 5 stars

Customer Reviews (1)

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good for the era it was written in.
Chaplin thoroughly investigates pace and breaks down speed for each portion of a race.He tries to quantify a horse's exertion level during each portion of the race. After doing a fine job in those regards, he totally blows it by suggesting the player can profit by playing any good shape overlay, regardless of how firm your opinion is on that contender and even goes on to state that the more contenders in a race, the better the bettors chances become. The seasoned player knows that these assumptions are simply not true and any time you don't have a firm conviction on who the winner will be, no amount of overlay will profit you.
After all, it's the horse with the best chances of winning that wins in the majority of cases, not necessarily the one with the best overlay odds. Anyone who thinks it's easier to pick winners by selecting any horse just because he's NOT the favorite is thinking backwards. ... Read more
