Excerpt: Harness racing in New Zealand is more often called trotting in the "old school" rather than the more fashionable name of "harness racing". The sport is long standing with events being held as early as 1864. In New Zealand trotting as a sport involves both pacing and trotting competitions for Standardbred racehorses. Trotting races were held as part of the programme of some of the galloping meetings in the Otago Southland area as early as 1864. The first totalisators were introduced about this time. They faced opposition from a curious alliance of bookmakers and anti-gambling factions but were approved by the Clubs and licensed by the Colonial Secretary. The first trotting race on a racecourse in Canterbury, in 1875, before the totalisator was introduced, the stake was only about a "tenner" (£10), ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=22491597 ... Editorial Review

Product Description
Thirty-some years ago, Meadow wrote a book called Success at the Harness Races, back when the game was vastly different. Now, he takes a more precise look at how the additions, deletions, and major changes to the game have altered the handicapper's edge significantly and how he can get it back. In this 8x11 spiralbound tome, he covers six major sections, each with at least eight chapters that unravel such mysteries as trip handicapping, how to watch a race, how to use statistics and systems, how to eliminate losers, and how to gain a betting edge. ... Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Engineer boots are one of many styles of leather boots; this type of footwear is often worn by motorcycle riders. The boots are most often made of heavy weight black leather, have a rounded or squarish toe and range in height from short (10") to extra high (38"). The most typical height is between 10 and 18 inches. Engineer boots are designed to protect the wearer from injury to the foot and leg: for motorcycle riders, in the case of an accident while riding and to prevent burns of the rider's legs and feet from the heat of the motorcycle parts while riding. For other wearers: this style also provides similar protection for the leg and foot. They may include a built-in steel toe cap and metal shank in the sole, and often are double layered with leather for stiffness. Engineer boots typically have an adjustable leather strap across the ankle as well as an adjustable leather strap at the top of the shaft to adjust the fit. Multiple straps at the top of the shaft are also not uncommon. Soles and heels are usually made of hard rubber and may either be relatively flat or may have lugs for increased traction. During the depression era, Chippewa Shoe Company, of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, developed a pair of boots with stovepipe leg and was fashioned over their "English Riding Boot" last. In the 1960s, Sears carried the Sears branded Chippewa Engineers and showed them as worn by land surveyors, a possibility as of how the name came about. Another major manufacturer of Engineer Boots is West Coast Shoe Company based in Portland, Oregon. They began manufacturing the engineer boot in 1939. Product Description
The Tuttle Definitive is without a doubt Joseph J. Tuttle's best book yet. His horsemanship knowledge along with extreme betting savvy is conveyed page after page. It's my belief that this book can help the beginner/novice, but it seemed very obvious to me that the content was directed towards helping the avid/advanced horseplayer. The price of $29.95 truly isn't that outrageous, considering the amount of helpful content, and the totalwordage (which is over 34,000). That makes this book seem like a steal, in my humble opinion ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars drivel.
Mr Tuttle demonstrates finally and authoritatively that a man can claim much and know little.

What he says of any use whatsoever has been said better and more substantially by other authors;however, there is too little of this to warrant the purchase.

My take on Mr Tuttle, succinctly? An evangelist without a faith, a shepherd in search of a flock:who then better to fleece than those already accustomed to the shears?Horserace handicappers, obviously.

avoid.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Tuttle Definitive: A Serious Horseplayer's Guide
I have read many horse racing handicapping books and this one is not well done.It was probably written in a hurry and not very well edited. The few good handicapping points he makes can be better found in other books and his own handicapping methodology is not mathimatically sound.I suppose he only wrote this book to hype his own website and to proclaim how "great" a handicapper he is.Don't bother.

5-0 out of 5 stars TUTTLE KNOWS HIS HORSERACING !
