Uncovering the true origins behind today’s traditions, Webster details the development of the gatherings from ancient Celtic roots to current international status. He examines the tradition’s influence in the global sporting arena, and how Highland Games attracted mass appeal and participation long before the advent of the modern Olympics. Product Description
Highland games are events held throughout the year in Scotland and other countries as a way of celebrating Scottish and Celtic culture and heritage, especially that of the Scottish Highlands. Certain aspects of the games are so well known as to have become emblematic of Scotland, such as the bagpipes, the kilt, and the heavy events, especially the caber toss. While centred on competitions in piping and drumming, dancing, and Scottish heavy athletics, the games also include entertainment and exhibits related to other aspects of Scottish and Gaelic culture. The Cowal Highland Gathering, better known as the Cowal Games, held in Dunoon, Scotland every August, is the largest Highland games in Scotland, attracting around 3,500 competitors and somewhere in the region of 15?20,000 spectators from around the globe. Worldwide, however, it is dwarfed by two gatherings in the United States: the 50,000 that attend Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina and the even larger gathering?the largest in the Northern Hemisphere?that has taken place every year since 1865 hosted by the Caledonian Club of San Francisco. This event is currently held Labor Day weekend in Pleasanton, California. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking
Real men throw kegs. Real women sleep with real men. I love Scotland and all the hairy drunk bastards that call it home.

1-0 out of 5 stars A disgrace to my culture
How dare any woman to write a book on a man's sport. I wonder if Mrs. Donaldson knows that women are peed upon in Scotland.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book really opened up my heart
Before I read this insightful study into the athletic world of drunken Scots, I must say that I wanted to never visit Scotland. Now that I read the book i want to go there and pee on their culture. They throw keg up inthe air. Wow how cool is that. They throw cabers, but can they win a war? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Essential Guide to Highland Games
A fun and interesting book to read for those with some familiarity of Highland Games. It gives a unique view of a portion of Scottish history that is being kept alive and growing in the U.S. as well as Scotland today. Great information on all forms of athletic events and their history.Manythat aren't played in the U.S. but interesting to read about all the same. While the list of games in the U.S. is out of date it's no problem becausecontacting most of the games listed will update you to many more beingplayed all over the world today. ... Read more

Product Description
This is an attempt to put the Scottish Highland Games into a sociological, historical and cultural context. Often dismissed as just an eccentric summer spectacle, the Games are shown to have played an important role in Scottish history, and their significance in the past reveals a great deal about modern Scottish culture. The author examines the folk origins of the Highland Games and asks why their popularity exploded after 1840. The problems facing modern Highland Gatherings and the relationships between the Gatherings and other social groups such as the clans, absentee landlords and emigre societies are all described in full. The social history of the sport is then firmly related to Scottish dependency, cultural identity and social development. This is a valuable sociological study of the role of sport in the shaping of a cultural identity. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Complete Waste
This book is barebones and just contains lists and lists of games and prices. Weighing in with 149 pages, the book is a complete - with its 19.95 price (it would have been a complete waste at $1.95 but that's besides the point).

However, if you're looking for bargains, then go no further than this price guide. Where else are you going to find Magicard for $40? Or Malagai for $30? Or Mangia for $14? My person favorite is Air-Raid, which The Official Guide has for $1000-$3000. In the 2004 Video Game Price Guide, it's a mere $30! It would be nice if the author of this book backed-up his prices by selling these games at these ridiculous prices. All I could say is if you want a laugh on par with that of Midnight Tiger, then buy this book. Everyone else stay away!

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
This book is not worth $20.Poor editing, incomplete lists, and odd prices don't do a good job of hiding the fact that this book is really just a bunch of list collected off of the internet.

Don't bother with it.The Digital Press book is far and away superior and doesn't cost much more. ... Read more

Product Description
Each year, tens of thousands of people flock to Grandfather Mountain, North Carolina, and to more than 200 other locations across the country to attend Scottish Highland Games and Gatherings. There, kilt-wearing participants compete in athletics, Highland dancing, and bagpiping, while others join clan societies in celebration of a Scottish heritage. As Celeste Ray notes, however, the Scottish affiliation that Americans claim today is a Highland Gaelic identity that did not come to characterize that nation until long after the ancestors of many Scottish Americans had left Scotland. Ray explores how Highland Scottish themes and lore merge with southern regional myths and identities to produce a unique style of commemoration and a complex sense of identity for Scottish Americans in the South. Blending the objectivity of the anthropologist with respect for the people she studies, she asks how and why we use memories of our ancestral pasts to provide a sense of identity and community in the present. In so doing, she offers an original and insightful examination of what it means to be Scottish in America. ... Read more
