3-0 out of 5 stars Left Wanting More
The book is 288 pages with extremely wide margins. To tell this story properly the book should be in the 400-500 page range.I wanted to know more about the American players, the ones who brought home the gold as well as those who, like Her Brooks in 1960, were among the last cuts. What were their feelings after "The Miracle" knowing that they had been that close to being a part of it.I wanted to know more about Brooks himself. His relationship with his wife and kids, did he ever get tired of talking about the 1980 games?I wanted to know more about the Russian players. Is the loss still talked about in Russia? How long did it take the players and hockey in the Soviet Union to get over the upset?

All of these subjects were touched upon, but that's the point--they were only touched upon and nothing was delved into completely so as to peel away layers of a more interesting story.

The 1980 U.S. hockey team is one of my favorite subjects.I found the team back then, and still find their achievement today, a tremendous source of inspiration.I just didn't learn very much new about them in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down
The 1980 Olympic hockey game between USA and USSR was the kind of event that you remember where you were, when we won. This book takes you back to that special time, that could be considered a turning point for US/USSR relations. After reading the book, I bought 2 DVDs.The movie about the game and the HBO documentary on the same subject. All were completely enjoyable.

We'll probably never have a team like the young amateurs that played for our country just because the loved the game.....a special book about some special kids and their coach.

5-0 out of 5 stars boys of winter ....
this book is without a doubt the best book i've read on the 1980 usa hockey team .outstanding in every way.mr. coffey takes you inside the locker room of both teams and inside the lives of most usa players .

3-0 out of 5 stars USA! USA! USA!
I can still hear the chants. Still feel the excitement. Still remember where I was, on the day a group of little known athletes beat the worlds best to move on to the gold medal game.

Mr. Coffey does a good job of bringing those moments back, although his concentration is soley on the one game itself.

A nice glimpse into those involved....both prior, during and since that momentous night (afternoon).

I enjoyed his job of retelling the event, although I have to admit, I popped "Miracle" into the DVD player about half way through the book in order to get a quick fix.

All in all.....a quick read and a nice way to bring those memories back to the surface.

5-0 out of 5 stars I do believe
Although I wasn't born yet to witness the Miracle on Ice, this book almost makes up for it. Truly inspirational, especially the stories of Eruzione and Wells. A must read if you love to root for underdogs or if you are interested in what happened to the boys after Lake Placid.

Book Description

Marc is a goalkeeper who thinks he's pretty good between the pipes, but the team's new coach doesn't agree. Marc is very upset, and his mom and dad are too busy with work and don't take any of this seriously. Then his grandfather, a former goalie himself, starts coaching Marc, using the story of the great Montreal Canadiens goalie Jacques Plante as a motivator. The hockey legend inspires Marc to new confidence, and he learns that older people can make a difference in younger lives, that perseverance pays off, and that it's okay to respectfully challenge authority.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for young hockey fans/players!
We got this for our son for Christmas (he's a goalie age 8) & he loves it.Great book - wonderful illustrations.Highly recommend for your goalie or hockey lover.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great bedtime story!
I borrowed this book from the local library for my sports loving 2-year-old daughter, and since then she has asked me to read it every night. This is the first story I've read to her that has captured her attention for more than 15 minutes (it takes us about 20 minutes to get through the story). The illustrations are wonderful, especially for the younger set, because I can point to those things, like the different pieces of goalie equipment, that may be new to her vocabulary. What I found to be most amazing about The Goalie Mask is the way it captured her interest about the great Habs team from the late 50's, who would have thought that a two-year-old could be fascinated by the legend of Jacques Plante?!?!?!

The most comprehensive guide to the art and science of goaltending

The past decade has seen a tremendous surge of interest in hockey. More colleges and universities have added programs. Hockey leagues are sprouting up in such unlikely places as Florida beach communities, New Mexico desert towns, and the Texas flatlands.

Coauthored by Jim Corsi, goaltending coach for the Buffalo Sabres, The Hockey Goalie's Handbook is the most comprehensive guide to mastering the most demanding hockey position: goalie. Drawing upon his extensive coaching experience at all levels--from peewees to pros--Corsi explores all facets of goaltending. From the psychology of being a goalie to choosing and purchasing the right equipment for an individual's style and needs, to drills for improving timing, coordination, reach, and speed, Corsi covers all the bases with invaluable advice and guidance as well as tips and techniques for aspiring goalies, parents, and hockey coaches.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners, wish there was more
This book is an amazing general overview of becoming a goaltender. the beginning of the books is more-or-less common sense for goaltenders that are already playing, but the middle of the books and the drills at the end serve as a great refresher course. If your a beginner, this book is great. If you want a refresher course in goaltending, you should also buy this. I believe that the only thing lacking in this book is a more in depth section on equipement. Not everyone understands what they are supposed to be looking for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Bunch!
I used to play hockey when I was much younger and now that I am getting back into it, I wanted to get as many books and videos as possible to remember the old skills and to find out how much has changed since I used to play. Of all the books that I bought and read, this one was the best in my opinion. I felt that it went deeper into the "How's and Why's" of techniques than Hockey Goaltending by Brian Daccord, which is my second favourite book. The way that Jim Corsi presented the concept of the Goaltender's "toolbox" was excellent for getting the information to stick in my head.

Bravo, and thank you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Endorsements
Several testimonials provided to the authors and publisher that are sure to be of interest.

Jim Corsi and John Hannon have written the most comprehensive goalie book I have ever seen.Jim has a great grasp of goaltender coaching and how the goaltending position has radically changed over the last decade.I, too, would encourage young goalies to study the game and learn as much as they can.

- Dominik Hasek, Buffalo Sabres & Detroit Red Wings

The approach to goaltending that Jim and John describe in this book has helped me understand the position better. As a head coach, I need to know that our goalies are well taken care of.Jim is both well liked and well respected by all of our goalies (from prospects to all-stars).Given the rich content of this book and the authors' attention to the smallest details, it is no wonder Jim is held in such high regard.

- Lindy Ruff, Buffalo Sabres

In order for me to make the big jumps from major junior to the AHL and then the AHL to the NHL, it became increasingly obvious that I had to expand upon my save skill repertoire.Jim Corsi, applying the concepts he and John Hannon cover in this book, helped me improve and successfully make this transition. If you, too, seek to become a serious student of the goalie position, then read this book cover to cover. It will change your whole philosophy about goaltending and make you more and more effective.

- Martin Biron, Buffalo Sabres

3-0 out of 5 stars Goaltending by Daccord is better

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Hockey Coaching Book Out There!
This is geared for Bantams, Midgets, and High School. But has tons of info and great detail.I basically took the info that applied to my team and made it out team manual.
Systems, drills, coaching advice, how to present, how to motivate, etc... its all in there.

Bottom line, it's a great book.If you're a hockey coach for these levels you need this. Its that good

Keep in mind as a coach you have to know your team and what applies to your team. You cant read this book and expect everything to work.Like most coaching book you have to use the info that applies.Be open, be creative.Don't be a coach who lives inside a book to give him/her the Xs and Os.This is a guide....a great guide. But you have to understand your team first for this to work.

I thought it was my problem until I talked it over with a friend. This book is so valuable. If you are coaching Bantam and above, it's a top notch resource. Thanks, Red! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Drills drills drills...Awsome book for a beginner coach
This book is full of drills. I believe after looking through it that I could coach a team with the way it lays things out for you and shows you how to manage a practice. It has slogans for getting motivation and a bunch of other handy coach type things. Thats only the first chapter or two. After that there is hundreds of drills for all sorts of situations. They break out each type of skill (skating, shooting, passing, checking, etc...) and give 20 to 30 drills for each skill. Each drill comes with illustration, an explanation, and variations to throw into the drill to mix it up. I only got this book to help me get some drills to do to practice but after looking through it I believe it would be a great addition to any coach or wannabe coaches library. This would be perfect for the beginner coach.

Book Description

What do Wayne Gretzky and thermodynamics have in common? A lot more than you might think. The game the National Hockey League calls " the coolest game on earth" is also a fast-paced, dynamic display of physics in action.

In The Physics of Hockey, physicist and amateur hockey player Alain Haché examines some of the physical principles behind the world's most popular winter team sport. What makes ice so slippery you can skate on it? How can you skate backwards most rapidly? How can physics improve your slapshot? Why do some collisions cause injuries but not others? How does a Zamboni work? And how do you prepare a pure, smooth ice surface in Dallas when it's 90 degrees outside and there are twenty thousand people inside?

This is physics by a hockey fan for the hockey fan. Haché investigates the properties of the ice surface, the science of skating and of skates, the odds of winning and losing streaks, and the principles behind shooting, hitting, and goaltending. Touching on topics such as solid-state physics, statistical physics elasticity, probability, thermodynamics, and mechanics, Haché uses science to enhance our appreciation and understanding of the game. The book is illustrated with photos and graphs and punctuated with anecdotes to show how famous players, past and present, are really physicists on skates.

A thought-provoking, fun, and gentle introduction to some basic issues in physics, The Physics of Hockey is a truly unique book worthy of the shelf of every hockey fan and physics enthusiast.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Physics of Life's Greatest Game
This is a really great book!It has helped me understand the science behind the game, in turn making me more aware of things that will make the game easier on my body and me more effective on the ice.I especially like that there is a whole chapter on goaltending, which can aide shooters in beating the goalie to the back of the net as well as the goaltender's skills. It was not an easy read if you don't want to sit in silence and focus entirely on reading the book. There is a lot of mental math if you care to truly understand the math. The author did a great job "dumbing" it up so non-physicists can understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars INSIDE HOCKEY Book Review
Alain Haché's The Physics of Hockey an extremely interesting book. As fans, we watch NHL players do some pretty incredible things, but don't really understand how they do them. Mr Haché uses his tremendous knowledge of physics to explain "how hockey happens".

The book explains just about every imaginable aspect of ice hockey. It explains how the ice rink is created and maintained. It tells us why players skate the way they do, why goalies move the way they do, why the players manipulate their sticks in certain ways, why the bodily protection is needed and how it works and how the game generally proceeds.

Haché's style is quite readable, though the idea of applying physics to hockey seems on the surface to be dry. He clearly loves the game and that comes through in his writing. He is both a scientist and a player, and he skillfully combines both of these talents in one very well-written volume.

For a scientist the book is much more meaningful; however, the book has plenty to offer for non-technical hockey fans. The book mixes very technical analyses and diagrams demonstrating physical principles with very down-to-earth prose that general hockey fans should gain a lot from and really enjoy.

The book's one flaw is the way in which the content was organized. The book starts off with a lot of scientific content before moving into the down-to-earth, non-technical prose. In fact, the first topic treated, the physics of the ice itself, is so esoteric, that even I, an engineer, was almost discouraged from moving past it. I was glad I made it through.

If there's a second edition, I suggest that Haché revise the structure of the book. He should write a version that deals with the physics in a way that demonstrates principles without detailed equations and diagrams. Then he should complete each chapter or section with his more technical treatment of each topic, which the non-technical person can bypass without really losing anything in the translation.

The physics is mainly what is called "mechanics". It involves the forces on skates that propel the players and the effects of friction with the ice. It also explains the movement of a puck, both sliding on ice and soaring through the air, and the impact of players on each other or on the boards in body contact. Haché also discusses ice quality and how it affects the play, and how the design of hockey skates achieves maximum usefulness. We also learn how figure skates and speed skates differ from hockey skates.

The difficulty of getting a puck past a goalie is explained in diagrams showing the effective open area of the net, why a goalie moves as he does in order to minimize this area, and why his equipment is designed as it is. Lots of interesting statistics are presented, such as typical puck speeds, both in standard shooting and slap shots, skating speeds and acceleration rates, and sizes of hockey players as it affects their play. The explanation of how a Zamboni works and what ice maintenance is about in general is also extremely interesting.

The Physics of Hockey is an excellent book. Alain Haché's explanations are current (using many current NHL stars) and very interesting (most hockey fans really have no idea how everything happens on the ice from a scientific standpoint). This is a very engaging book for a technical person, but I think Haché missed an opportunity to achieve a broader appeal with a somewhat different organization of the material.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brillaintly Written, Fun Applied Science
If you like ice hockey and got a B or better in high school physics (and you remember how it happened), this book is a must-have.

Alain Haché is an amateur-league goalie, and a professional physicist. His book analyses all aspects of the game, from the coefficient of friction of ice at different temperatures to the effects of air and gravity on a flying puck after a slapshot.

The book includes references to hockey biographies, medical and physiological papers, and player technique books like "Speed on Skates".

Some reviewers might fault the book for not explaining hockey with only physics; the author uses statistics (to explain witing and losing streaks), and geometry (to explain why goalies come out of the net) in his analysis.

Haché's explanations are well written, and as far as I can tell, technically correct. The author is a student of the game and his reference for it is obvious. For the math hobbyist or amateur physicist who is also interested in hockey, this is a fantastic book. ... Read more

Book Description

Author Keltie Thomas and illustrator Greg Hall team up to look at hockey in a new way: from the perspective of science. Their book explores the all-important science of explosive moves (the slapshot) and maximizing a player’s chance of scoring; the science of speedy, powerful skating; the puck, stick, mask, and other equipment; the properties of ice and how skating surfaces are maintained; and the science of fitness and healing injuries. How Hockey Works includes personal stories from the inspirational (the stunning careers of Bobby Orr and Wayne Gretzky) to the hilarious (the puck’s origins as an India rubber ball reshaped by a frustrated rink owner). Informative sidebars, a “Rules and Regs” section, and a glossary help make any reader an expert on the game. From casual to obsessed every hockey fan can find something in How Hockey Works.

Book Description
From Giller-nominated author Bill Gaston, proof not only that hockey players can read, but that some of them can even write.

Midnight Hockey tells the story of Gaston’s final season, as he contemplates hanging up his skates, and looks back on the sport that has meant so much to him.

Sometimes lewd and hilarious, sometimes (though not as often) reflective, Midnight Hockey is a portrait of Canada’s fastest-growing athletic phenomenon: beer-league and oldtimers’ hockey. Gaston spills the beans about the rules of the game (written and unwritten), weird beer, team names, and road-trip sex, illustrated with stories of Gaston’s life in the game, from the outdoor rinks of Winnipeg, through junior hockey, varsity, the professional leagues of Europe, to the late-night games and road-trip shenanigans of beer-league.

For all those thousands of guys who drive to the rink late on a snowy night, who know the euphoria of a beer after the game, who think of how good they used to be, who grow nostalgic over a whiff from an unwashed hockey bag – and for anyone who has had to live with such a person – Midnight Hockey is laugh-out-loud funny, true-to-life, and ultimately thoughtful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny, witty, and very relevant.
Bill Gaston hits every milestone that beer leaguers and oldtimers go through on their own personal journey through the game. Bill's unique viewpoint as an insider allows rollicking recollections of road trips, lousy goalies, and the general tribal behavior of middle aged men.

THe only shortcoming is that book is written mostly to, and for Canadians; which sometimes leaves the Rest Of the World out in the cold as to inside humor.

Great book, buy it - and share it with your teammates!

4-0 out of 5 stars A whole lot of quotes
This book is pretty good, but it could certainly have been better. It has a very large amount of quotations and stories of various "tough guys", "enforcers" and general managers. The people who are quoted are disproportionately from Minnesota, but that is because -I believe- the author is from that area.I didn't mind it given I am from MN, but I think some others might notice it as well and wonder why that was the case.It is quite easy to read and I do recommend it for anyone who is looking for something like that and enjoys hearing stories about the "Code".In my view, however, Bertstein did not develop the book as much as he might have been able.He relies TOO much on quote after quote...and they are multiple paragraphs in length. When you to find a copy and page through it you will probably remember my comment and chuckle bit at the volume and length of quotes you noticed. There is significant repetition which is a bit annoying. It felt as if he was trying to turn a long article into book.As a teacher, I recognize when a student starts to babble a bit in their paper with the obvious goal of adding some length to their submitted assignment. The repetition, along with the author's reliance on lengthy quote after lengthy quote is why I did the teacher thing and marked Bertstein down from five stars to four stars. It was a good book, but could have been better and a bit more original.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for the new hockey fan
being new hockey fans it has often been confusing as to why some penalties are called and some things aren't.Hearing long time fans complaining about calls that seem obvious.why is fighting allowed in hockey but not other team sports. This book does an excellent job of explaining how hockey has evolved and the reasons behind a lot of the actions on the ice.Definately opens up another line of thinking and allows you to have a better perspective of the game from the players point of view.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for the serious hockey fan!
I am a huge NHL fan and have read many hockey books, and this one left me unimpressed.

If you are a serious hockey fan, you will enjoy a new fighting anecdote or two in this book, but you will not learn much. Some players protect, other players are protected, but no one disrespects the game; nothing new there.

If you are a "newbie" to the NHL and its seemingly purposeless violence, then this book is a good read to better understand the culture of the game and some of its colorful characters.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unbelieveable factual errors
I read nearly every hockey book that comes out, and never write reviews, until now.I was so frustrated, I had to put it down after about 16 pages.Did anybody bother to fact-check this book?First, the Richard riot did not occur during the season after Richard's suspension, but very shortly afterwards.Second, and most aggravating, nobody ever serves a game misconduct in the penalty box. You're kicked out of the game; that's why they call it a game misconduct. So how can someone come out of the penalty box after serving a game misconduct? In addition to the fact this guy doesn't understand hockey and the failure to check facts, it's almost as if he simply turned on his tape recorder, got the same quote from lots of different guys, and sent it in.The only thing that keeps me from calling it the worst hockey book I ever read isthe fact that I couldn't finish it, it was too aggravating. If you want a GOOD book on fighting in hockey, I recommend Ultimate Bad Boys by Stan Fischler.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good start dragged down by mediocre writing and factual errors
As a longtime NHL fan who grew up watching the tag team of Probert & Kocur in Detroit, I am no stranger to fighting in the NHL.I was hoping with this book to get some insight into the unwritten rules and systems in place for fighting in the NHL.In the first 75 pages or so, I got that.Then...

The last 2/3 of the book is dragged down by pointless sidetracks into discussions of rule changes, economics, and other nonsense not related to "The Code".The focus gets lost and the points being made are dragged down by the mediocre writing style.

Additionally, there are numerous factual errors throughout.Referring to the Calgary/Edmonton feud as "The Battle of Ontario" would be one (though it was correctly labeled later in the book); stating that Chris Pronger and Steve Yzerman are both finesse players would be another (Yzerman, yes.Pronger, no.).Labeling Borje Salming and Doug Weight as enforces would be another.Doug Weight? The guy is a first-line center. And on and on and on.

So what starts out promising doesn't finish that way.Too bad! ... Read more

Book Description

Once upon a time, Teena Dickerson endured months of hockey mania every year followed by endless weeks of playoff insanity while her husband sprawled out on the couch guzzling beer and shouting at the TV. Then she decided to change all that and become a devoted fan of this popular game.

The Girlfriend's Guide to Hockey demystifies the arcane language of hockey (such as butt-ending and chippy play), explains the rules and the rituals, and identifies the Stanley behind the championship Cup. It's all here: the teams, the players, the history and the trivia, written with clarity and humor. And there's the complete scoop on women's hockey, too.

With its simple, direct style and sprinkling of colorful anecdotes, this book is the perfect introduction for anyone new to the game and the traditions that accompany it.

This new edition is updated to include recent new stars, Cup winners and "best" teams.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not just for girlfriends
I had two reasons for buying this book. First I'm a Will Ferguson fan; I've read and loved most of his books and his being listed as co-author was good enough for me. Second, despite being Canadian, I am completely ignorant of ice hockey, which comes mostly from a lack of interest. As a Canadian living abroad, I realize that I have ambassadorial duties regarding the promotion of Canadiana, and ice hockey tops the list of Canadiana must-know items. So since girlfriends are seldom interested in sports (he he he) a book written by a woman for women would logically need to drum up interest in the topic, and this it did for me.

Teene Spencer wrote most of it and presents the history of the game, a basic overview of the rules, a survey of the organization, and lists of the greatest players and teams. Husband and boyfriend Bruce Spencer and family friend Will Ferguson pepper the pages with comments and disputes, most prominent of which is the fight-to-the-death over the Montreal Canadiens.

Good read, and informative if you want to get into hockey.

4-0 out of 5 stars Flip on ESPN and pass me a beer
Like the author, I found myself engaged to a die-hard hockey fan. This book is a great place to start for the newly-initiated hockey girlfriend. It's a quick read, the author's racy innuendos give it a Girls' Night Out tone that's a lot more inviting and easier to relate to than other intro books. The stats and trivia are great, but will need to be updated eventually. Nice to see coverage of women's hockey, too.
PS - the bit about defensemen on page 19 is totally true ;).

5-0 out of 5 stars Love, it's the best!!!!!!!!!!
A great comprehensive goaltending book.Stretching, taking care of your equipment, practicing, playing, and visualizing...this book has got tons of information and is very helpful. I'd love to see some follow-ups going even further indepth!

4-0 out of 5 stars This book helped an aspiring goaltender
I'm 30, never played a minunte of hockey, and want to play goalie. This is the book I bought. I loved it, because of the general all around information it provides. From stretching, eqiupment, technique , to mental toughness. It also does not talk down to you, as you were ten years old.
My only complaint is the lack of depth in the equipment chapters. If it was an all encompassing book, I would have liked more information on kinds of different pads, masks, gloves, ect.
I recomend this book, they tried to help all areas, and I think it worked on me. And I now play goalie twice a week.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hockey Goaltending is an outstanding starting book.
Offering a well writen and condensed description of both Ice and Roller/Street hockey for a person wishing to learn the How To's of Hockey Goaltending. It has great descriptions backed up with photo's to truely give the reader an idea of what is being described.

I am in my first year of a Roller Hockey league and have found this book to be outstanding for my level of play.My game has drastically improved and my understanding of the position has too.

I would recomend this book for any and beginner to intermediate levels of players.
