Book Description
Hockey, like most sports, is a game of numbersteam stats, player stats, standings and, of course, the sweater numbers. To hockey fans, numbers such as 4, 29 or 99 all register in a unique way. Each conjures an image of a favourite player, perhaps a favourite memory. In many ways the numberslike the players who wore themhave become icons. But what happens when two or more great players have worn the same number? Who was the best? Is Gordie Howe the quintessential number 9, or does the honour belong to Maurice Richard, Bobby Hull, or someone else? And what about number 7? It is Howie Morenz or Phil Esposito or Ted Lindsay? And number 4? We all know how Don Cherry would vote, but what about the great Jean Beliveau? Where does he rank? In Hockey Night in Canada: By the Numbers, veteran hockey analyst and sportswriter Scott Morrison surveys the field and with contributions from other Hockey Night in Canada personalities takes every number, from 00 to 99, and determines who was the best and who were the rest to wear each number. Featuring statistics, facts, interesting anecdotes, and full-colour photography throughout, this book is sure to spark a lively debate and rekindle a lot of fond memories. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars My son loves this book
It's not great literature by any means, but this has been one of my son's favorite books since he was about 4 years old. Now that he's almost 7, it's a perfect book for him to read to ME. His twin sister has always enjoyed it as well. It's funny cause even though it is very simple and predictable, the kids seem to really enjoy the simplicity and predictability of it. It's also got a number of very good messages about being a good sport, teamwork, listening to the coach, etc.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ice and Ice Cream: The Importance of Teamwork!
Hal, the new kid in town, tries to make a good impression on his hockey teammates. However, by trying too hard and placing his personal performance first, he forgets such fundamentals as teamwork, the importance of defense, following the coach's directions, and enjoying the game, and he plays worse than on his former hockey team. With the help of his coach and his dad, Hal learns to play team ball, and the taste of victory is as sweet as the post-game hot fudge sundaes.

The book has 29 pages, generally unimaginative pictures, and a fairly predictable story.Still, the young hockey fan will enjoy the action and may appreciate the emphasis on teamwork and defense. A "Hello Reader!" book (Level 3) recommended for students in grades 1 and 2.

Book Description
During the 1980s, the geography of minor-league professional hockey changed radically, moving from its roots in the Maritime provinces and in the New England and midwestern states into the American south. In addition to cities like Oklahoma City, Dallas, Charlotte and Norfolk, which had long traditions of minor-league hockey, unlikely places such as Biloxi, Baton Rouge, Little Rock and Augusta hosted teams. Over an 18-year period, minor-league hockey was played in 72 different southern cities, and at one point there were more minor-league teams in Texas than in all of Canada. Yet the players—and owners—have always been predominantly Canadian.

Hockey Night in Dixie examines this phenomenon with an historical overview of the period, including interviews with people involved in the founding and early years of each of the 13 leagues. There are also in-depth portraits of four teams, one from each of the four lower minor leagues that played during the 2005-06 season. These portraits feature interviews with owners, coaches, players, officials, fans and reporters. Amply illustrated with photographs, Hockey Night in Dixie paints a vivid picture of this extraordinary development in minor-league sports. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
Not only does this book provide you with detailed drills , it backs it upwith specifics on what areas the drill works on , and highlights. It alsohas well written introductions on individual areasand the skills neededto to become a better offensive player , well worth the time to read anddigest the knowledge it provides .

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book
I haven't read many books about hockey coaching, but after recieving this book, I'm pretty happy with it.It teaches you the basic shooting principles and spends some time on each type of shot. Then it goes into sections about buildings skills for each type of offensive play your team might need to work on: 1-1's, setting up plays, etc.A good variety of drills are offerred in this book and the nice thing is you can photocopy them out one by one because they are restricted to facing pages - so that you don't have to carry the whole book around.I'll be using these drills with my kids roller-hockey team and I think it will help.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best resources I've come across
Santa dropped this one in my stocking. It's great, particularly if you are searching for half-ice drills -- about half of the 75 drills are designed for half-ice.The strength of this book is its emphasis on puck movement to create scoring chances. The corollary is also true -- by emphasizing movement on the attack, goaltenders also improve their positioning and mobility. The drills are well-suited to kids aged 9 and up. I have shared the book with other coaches and, perhaps the strongest endorsement --my house league hockey association has ordered copies for all of our coaches! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Hockey Machine
This book The Hockey Machine is about a kid named Steve. After an ordinary game Steve gets kidnaped but he doesn't know it. The kidnapers[Kenneth] took him to a nice dinner. Kenneth takes Steve to what looks like a hockey camp. After a few weeks, Steve wants to get out and go home. He tries to escape, but guards catch him. He then has to sit in a cell for 48 hours. Now he tries to escape again, and he gets to a phone booth. Then Steve remembers his uncle lives in the area, so he calls him. His uncle finds him immediately. Next Steve finally goes home.
I thought this was one of the best books because I like mystery books.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Hockey Machine a review by Adam
By: Matt Christopher

Have you ever been away from your parents or someone you loved for a long period of time? Well if you have I bet you don't like it. In the book "The Hockey Machine" by Matt Christopher, the protagonist, Steve, plays ice hockey for hockey team called the Bobtails. Steve lives with his parents, or used to anyway. One day after hockey, just as Steve was leaving, he heard a voice say, "Hi Steve, I'm Mark," he announced. Steve did not know who this was.
Then Mark added, "Me and my older friend have been watching you play hockey". " Come on he is in the car waiting to meet you." Marks older friend is Kenneth. Kenneth is a coach of a ice-hockey team in Indianapolis. When Steve and Kenneth met they talked, and after that Kenneth asked Steve if he wanted to go and get something to eat for lunch. Steve told him no because he had to get home.Kenneth said that he would take him home right after they ate. Without saying anything Mark pushed Steve in. Steve got in and Steve, Mark, Kenneth, and the driver all went out to lunch.

On the ride back to Steve's house, Steve fell asleep. When Steve awoke he was still in the car. Then he asked in a worried voice, " Where are we going?"
Kenneth answered, "To Indianapolis."
Steve shrieked, "What, you said that you would take me home right after lunch." Kenneth ruled, "You're going to play on my hockey team, the Chariots.
I already asked your parents when you were asleep."
Steve said "Prove it." Kenneth pulled out a letter and gave it to Steve.
The letter was typed out. Steve thought in his head that anybody could have typed this letter. After Steve was finished reading the letter he finally questioned, " how come I didn't even get a chance to say good-bye to my parents?" No one answered.
As soon as they reached the airport they got on to an airplane to fly to Indianapolis. After they got there Steve met the hockey team. They stayed in their own hotel. After Steve met the guys he asked Mark if Mark would talk to Kenneth because Steve was already feeling home sick. Mark told him "quit thinking about your home. It just makes you more worried."
Then he advised "all of the guys and I did." Steve just bowed his head in sadness, and all he could do was think about home! If you've ever felt like Steve has, all you want to do is go home and see your parents. See what happens to Steve if you get the book The Hockey Machine

Book Description
Maine’s long winters would seem the ideal place for hockey to develop, but blistering winter conditions, frigid temperatures, and windchill made the sport unpleasant and even dangerous. The problem was not solved until 1976, when Harold Alfond donated a large sum of money for the establishment of a suitable facility for indoor hockey. University of Maine Ice Hockey tells the story of how a small school from Maine with a student body of under 12,000 rose to be one of the top-tier hockey programs in the nation, one of the great success stories in modern collegiate sports. ... Product Description
Angela Ruggiero is the world’s best women's ice hockey player as rated by Hockey News magazine. She was the first female non-goalie to play in a men’s professional hockey league, and she has used her status as a top female athlete to promote education, health, and the value of sports across the globe. A Harvard graduate, humanitarian, and rare hockey “triple crown” winner (Olympic gold medalist, world champion, and collegiate champion), she traces in Breaking the Ice the growth of girls’ and women’s hockey from the fringes of the sports world to the center of the Olympic and world stage.Angela’s inspirational journey from a childhood in the suburbs of Southern California, where she had to overcome skepticism concerning girls in hockey and even about the sport of hockey itself, to stardom in rinks around the world is a remarkable story of determination and athletic achievement. A leading player for all three U.S. Women’s Olympic Hockey teams for which she has played, she recounts not only the joys of ultimate victory but also the physical and emotional challenges that confront a topnotch athlete, including strains on family life, a punishing training regimen, and the rigors of constant travel. It reveals Angela as a dynamic and outspoken woman who has packed a rucksack full of intense experiences and hard-learned lessons into her life. Her story will appeal not only to hockey and sports fans but also to readers of all ages who are interested in the triumph of a woman who would not be daunted by the challenges of blazing a trail and breaking through barriers. Angela has played in six International Ice Hockey Federation Women’s World Championships, and in April 2005 she scored one of the shootout goals that helped the U.S. team win the tournament for the first time. She was recognized by the NCAA as one of the Top VIII scholar athletes in the country. Since graduating from Harvard in 2004, Ruggiero has founded the All-American Girls Hockey School. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars hockey role model
I read this book after my 13 year hockey player finished. This is a life lesson book. She is one of the top in her field and like C.Gunn had things to overcome that made them stronger. This book lets girls know these are real people that worked hard, and it is possible to shoot for the stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for ALL female athletes
My daughter is a 10 year old girl hockey player and both she and I read the book, she actually did a powerpoint presentation for school on the book. This book is more than just a hockey book but an insiration to all girls about the obstacles Angela overcame in her life. After reading the book myself I am glad to know that my daughter looks up to Angela and wants to be like her, there is NO better role model for a young girl to look up to than Angela. This book is a must for all young girls, no matter what sport or activity they are involved in.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring.
This book talks about some of the early formings of girls/womens hockey in the USA. This is a very good book to read if you are familiar with hockey. Even if you are not involved with hockey you will like this book, because it talks about overcoming the odds and moving up in the ranks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Angela Ruggiero rocks my (hockey) socks

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for an introduction to hockey
Needs to be updated to reflect significant rule changes in NHL in last 3 years, but otherwise it is a good introduction to hockey.Has lots of good, clearillustrations. The greatest value of this book is the illustrations of referee signals since when watching amateur hockey or league hockey the ref's signal is not announced over a PA system.

Clearly not written by hockey people.

I could give numerous examples like pg 40 "Get Your Players' Attention""Make sure they aren't looking into the sun or at some distracting activity."

Practic plans are a joke.No way someone could run a 50 min practice based on these practice plans.

The book was delivered to me within 5 days and was in excellent condition when I received it.
The book is excellent. It provides some great ideas for hockey fitness. The only draw-back is that a good portion of the book deals with on ice fitness exercises and unless you're a professional hockey player, it is very difficult to have a clean sheet of ice to yourself to work on conditioning. However, there is enough to keep you busy.

This is the book that has elevated the hockey game of a 33 year old goaltender.I've been using it for myself and for the midget hockey team I coach. It definitely gives the team the edge when the the drills are executed on a regular schedule during the season and off season. This is required reading for my youth team and it has not failed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete Conditioning for Ice Hockey
This book is fantastic. The book is very complete, from beginning to end on the training and conditioning aspect. Not only did it include the fitness portion, but also nutrition, which I was surprised to see.

My only complaint is that each and every exersize should have photos. Most do, but not all of them. There are some exersizes that are not 100% clear on the proper technique.

Other than that it's great.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Myriad of Exercises
Peter Twist says it right in the beginning, there is nothing quite like hockey. That makes it really tough to get in shape to play. Even if you're already in great shape, you're game could improve dramatically if you got into hockey shape. That is exactly what Twist tries to do.

The book is organized in such a way that the later chapters build upon the previous chapters. He begins by talking about energy and how we burn fuels different ways when playing hockey. Then he goes into stretching and strength training. If you have ever spent any time around a gym, you'll already know how to perform these movements. The payoff for this book is the plyometric. These are techniques used to help improve your agility and explosive movements. Let's face it, the team that can consistently get to the puck first usually wins. These exercises will provide you with a quick jump giving you an extra step over your opponent and the puck.

Twist writes simply, and his instructions are easy to follow. He uses photos generously when trying to explain complex movements. Both on-ice and off-ice exercises are provided so you don't have to be at the rink or have precious ice time to get into shape.

4-0 out of 5 stars good book
a good book this is my first hockey training book and I was very happy with it but i would reccomend it for coaches ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book We Can All Relate To
Brian Kennedy's Growing Up Hockey will take you back to the playground, reminding you of the politics of childhood. For Brian, this meant having the right hockey stick and having the rare hockey cards. But do not be fooled. This book is not just for hockey fans.Anyone can relate. As kids, we all wanted to be able to brag to our friends about our possessions or our accomplishments. And those things we loved as children we often take with us as adults. This is what this book is all about.

And the writing style?Brian writes in a way that makes it hard to put the book down.He does not waste words, but he gives all the detail needed.I read the book in three days, even after having to steal it back from my wife.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Christmas Story, Hockey Style
"Growing Up Hockey" is about a little boy, this one a real-life hockey player named Brian Kennedy. If you enjoyed "A Christmas Story" and love hockey, you'll be glad to know that reading Kennedy's account of his love affair with hockey is like listening to Ralphie Parker talk about his obsession for a Red Ryder BB gun. The major difference is that Kennedy schemes for not a rifle to fend off Black Bart but rather a hockey stick with a banana curve and then a Ken Dryden hockey card so that he can boast to his playground pals. You read this story, and you'll boast to your hockey friends that you've read the funniest hockey book you've read in years.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST Own for Hockey Fans
Brian Kennedy's story of the average hockey lover/player growing up in Canada is one I think everyone who loves hockey will enjoy. Growing Up Hockey chronicles Mr. Kennedy's life as he grew up in Canada and later went to the US and England for school or work. Although I grew up in the US, where hockey was not the main sport, I enjoyed reading about what life is like for those who grow up with hockey as an integral part of their lives.

It's great that the US has so many options, but I found myself wishing I knew what it was like to be able to discuss hockey with almost anyone around. Since I've been a fan of hockey, I've always had a couple friends who enjoy the game about as much as I do, but it would be something else to experience an environment where those who did not follow hockey were the exception.

Mr. Kennedy's detailed account of his life growing up with hockey as a central influence is very interesting. He tells stories about playing hockey, watching hockey, hockey cards, living without being able to see much hockey, the differences between the NHL and ENL (in England), and life in Canada.I couldn't recommend this book more for anyone in your life who loves hockey!

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it even though I'm not a hockey fan.
My husband bought this book and I was curious about it when I read the title. I started reading and just couldn't stop. This is a book full of memories and moments that stayed in the mind of the narrator, and they take us (as readers) back to our own memories. These stories made me think about friends in the playground, about that one fleeting moment of athletic success and how it feels to be so close to my dreams of glory. Reading story after story reminded me about that past that we very often take for granted and easily forget, but that will always be a series of defining moments that make us who we are. It's also gratifying to read where the narrator ended up, since he reflects also on his own present life. I am not a hockey fan, but I enjoy good stories, especially when they're written in a way that grabs you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just sit back and enjoy the ride
Life is ultimately about love. We all recognize love, although we do not love in the same way. None understands the logic of our individual passions, but we count ourselves fortunate to be near its mystery. LA Car Editor-at-Large and sports journalist Brian Kennedy writes about his lifelong love and passion in Growing Up Hockey (Folklore Publishing, 2007). The book draws you in at the beginning, with Brian's preschool adventure onto ice in Montreal, and ends with his touching the Duck's Stanley Cup in Los Angeles. The section titles of his book say it well: Learning the Game, Living the Game, Loving the Game. This is a story of a boy who grows up in Canada 's suburbs living for his pee wee league and collecting NHL cards. This is a story of a man who still is the consummate fan watching games over and over so that the video wears thin. He played until it got too rough, he refereed, he bought tickets from scalpers. He finally finds opportunity to worm himself nearer the game by becoming a sports writer. Here is another instance where he writes so he can be closer to his favorite sport. You see, Brian has another passion and love. Brian also writes about cars and car racing. Hockey and cars are about the adrenaline of gliding speed. But why analyze. Growing Up Hockey should be approached in much the same way as Brian's automotive articles: Just sit back, hang on and enjoy the ride. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great story blend of his life
This book to me is 5 stars-- a lot better than even The Game by Ken Dryden. His life story told from himself creates a very solid atmosphere and ultimately a great blend of tragedy into fantasy. This is one of the few books I finished within a week without having to do for school work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Read
An interesting story.Very inspirational.Well written. Its a true story and I love that, it gives you another reason to always have hope and to never give up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great stuff
Someone had given my husband a copy of this book to read and I picked it up one day because I am a big-time hockey fan. I read it cover to cover in all of about five hours. I was completely absorbed by Ken Baker's story, I think much more so because I know a lot of the players he talked about. Jason Firth, John Vary, Willett, Hayzie and my favorite, Beau-beau(David-Alexander Beauregard), I smiled each time I read their names, thinking of the times they spent in Port Huron over the years. Minor league hockey is not glamorous (try being married to a broadcaster), but Baker's dream moved me.So many people in his position would have just given up and he kept digging deeper, he knew he could do it if given the chance. I wish I could be that brave.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Dream,A Team
I couldn't put it down. A GREAT book!. I read it over and over again. It's very inspiring. Helped to recongized the importance of fulfilling a dream. It's way more than a hockey book it teaches life gulidlines.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hockey Insider tells all.
If you like hockey or even if you don't you won't be able to put this book down. It's moving to the point of being captivating. In telling his comeback story Ken Baker reveals much about the inside workings of minor league pro hockey. He is transparent about his own life as well as presenting an expose on pro hockey. It's easy reading but also inspiring. This is one you'll want to read and pass on to your friends. ... Read more
