4-0 out of 5 stars A good place to start
I was a bit leery of a book that uses "Ultimate Guide" in it's title as usually they don't deliver and are anything but "ultimate". I must say that this book does a good job of delivering good, solid information without being overly wordy. It's an easy and enjoyable read with information covering just about everything you would want to know as a new elk hunter. Various chapters have guest "experts" that share their experiences. It covers patterning elk habits to finding suitable elk habitat, the importance of planning, scouting, and physical conditioning, Do-it-yourself or guided hunts, information about weapon selection (archery, muzzleloader, and rifle) and various hunting strategies.

One downside about the book was that, at times, it felt like a paid advertisement from Knight & Hale products (the reason I knocked off a star). The chapter on calling elk (with Chad Schearer) seems particularly loaded with name dropping which Knight & Hale calls he prefers. The guest experts for the chapter on muzzleloaders are Harold Knight and David Hale themselves. Still, the product name dropping is fairly isolated and it doesn't greatly detract from the overall quality of the book.

If you've never hunted elk or feel like you could brush up on some pointers from people who have been there, this book is a safe bet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ultimate Guide to Elk Hunting
Ok now we are talking about a book with information and with the few years I have under my belt they told the truth.Yes hunting is not for sure or 100% but the information shared was well worth the price of the book.More in depth which I was looking for and would love to sit around the camp fire and jaw with these guys they have a list of knowledge that one could tap.Picked up some great tips to help shorten the learning curve but also when something happens to you the answers to why may be answered when you think of what you read.As they say that is what makes hunting elk so much fun it is totally a challenge specially when you are an archer.Good Job!

Product Description
The sport of hunting ducks and geese is alive and quite well in North America, thanks in large part to a resurgence of waterfowl numbers, which, in turn, can be traced to conservation groups such as Ducks Unlimited and Delta Waterfowl, Inc., as well as to sportsmen who impose limits on themselves far stricter than those issued by the law.

Assembling the gear, fixing the decoys, working with the Labs and Chesapeakes, caring for the firearms, fixing the blinds or duck boats, and always looking for more hotspots to hunt, waterfowlers are a breed unto themselves.

In these pages, read how to become adept at all aspects of duck and goose hunting-how to set the decoys in various conditions, how to call for the various species at different times of the year, how to get out there on the marsh or grain field and collect birds.

Stubborn, lethal, and from Jersey…what more could a Viking warrior want from his woman?

The Gathering, Book 1

Neecy Lawrence, winged warrior for a Viking goddess and second-in-command of the fierce Crows, doesn’t know what to do with a nice guy. As it is, making up for a past she’d sooner forget leaves her barely polite most days. But Raven leader and loyal Odin warrior, Will Yager, isn’t just nice. He’s gorgeous, hot, and a distraction she simply can’t afford.

Yager has wanted Neecy in his life—and in his bed—for a long time. Not just for a night, but forever. And, like any self-respecting Viking, he’ll stop at nothing to get what he wants. So what if she’s the most difficult, complex, never-gives-him-a-break woman he’s ever known? She’s more than worth the effort. In fact, she’s worth everything.

And if it turns out that twenty-four hours of non-stop, any-way-she-wants-it sex doesn’t work with Neecy? Then it looks like he’ll just have to get a little more creative…

Warning: Contains a strong, intelligent, ass-kicking heroine; an alpha hero with the occasional geeky tendency; gritty, realistic violence; and sex so hot that, well, let’s just say there’s not enough ice water in the world…

I'm sick of reading books where the Lord's name is taken in vain. It's not a word I use and I don't like it slipping into my head because I'm reading it.You would think authors would have more respect for their readers and their beliefs. Not an author I will read EVER again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice new series
Although, "nice," is not the right word to describe the characters in this novel.I wasn't sure if I would like the book when I first started reading it, but I found a lot of elements in it that I enjoy in other Laurenston books.Like the dry, violent, humor of the characters.I don't understand why I find reading about the characters getting slapped down is so hilarious.Neecy, heroine, is a likable female character who is tough, but relatable.Yager, is hero of Viking descent that is lovable, but deadly. Both very common in a Laurenston book. The storyline is based around a group of Crow women known an the gathering and their Raven counterparts. There is a lot of Viking mythology mixed in, as well as, the fact that the gods and goddesses seem to enjoy using their "people" as pawns in their own wicked games and power plays.I look forward to the next in the series, but am very sore at having to wait on her dragon series (my fav) under her other name, Aiken. What's up with that?

Product Description

For more than half a century, Special Forces and CIA legend Billy Waugh dedicated his life to tracking down and eliminating America's most virulent enemies. Operating from the darkest shadows and most desolate corners of the world, he made his mark in many of the most important operations in the annals of U.S. Spec Ops.

He spent seven and a half years behind enemy lines in Vietnam as a member of a covert group of elite commandos. He trailed Osama Bin Laden in Khartoum in the early '90s, and would have killed the terrorist kingpin if his superiors had allowed it. And at the age of seventy-two, he marched through the frozen high plains of Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Hunting the Jackal is the astonishing true account of the singular career of a courageous soldier in his nation's shadow wars -- including his pivotal role in the previously untold story of the capture of the most infamous and elusive assassin in history, Carlos the Jackal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Giri-A Japanese term for a debt so profound it cannot be repaid
Having read this book and having spent an afternoon with Mr Waugh I cannot adequetly state how impressive and HUMBLE the sefless warrior is. Contrary to the opening review of this book on Amazon'sale page, Waugh is the very antithesis of a blusterer. He has risked more, given more for this country then perhaps any living human. I say this becaus he NEVER will.He has too much compassion and respect for his fallen comrades in arms. The author IMHO has captured the man as well as is possible to do so for a person so complex, honorable and driven. If there was even a shred of decency and honor left from the governing body of this nation the people of this country would recieve a free copy of Hunting The Jackal instead of this supposed FREE HEALTHCARE. The book is a compelling and excellent read. If the is any fairness left to be had in this land the US government would seize the milliondollar Pulitzer Fraud money given to ALGORE ,as well as the three hundred million plus he has made peddling his climate change hoax and give every penny of it to Billy Waugh . Knowing him he would give it all to deserving families of fallen American Warriors.Too bad we can't put Sean Penn and Bily Waugh in a cage match, I will put my money on the 80 year old blusterer. Buy this book, it is the right thing to do.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book but...
Let me just say that this book is a great read, tons of fun and is very hard to put down. If you're into clandestine warfare and military history there aren't too many books that can top this. I do have two minor problems though, which is why I gave it only 4 out of 5 stars. The first is Billy Waugh, as a writer, has an annoying tendancy sometimes to repeat himself. You'll be reading a paragraph and a little while later he'll say essentially the same thing a second time in a slightly differnt manner. The second is this book is less than 350 pages long. That, in itself, may not be a big deal except this man is talking about his 50 years of service to his country. Some of the chapters are, themselves, worthy of their own book...especially his exploits in Vietnam. The section on going after Carlos (a.k.a. The Jackal) is only 3 chapters long, and there are 13 chapters in the book. In all honesty I'd say there's enough material in here for AT LEAST 3 books. After (less than) 350 pages you're left wanting more. What I'd love to see Billy Waugh do is go back and expand on those chapters. Other than that, it's definitely worth the price. All I can say about Billy Waugh as a soldier and a person is, I'm glad he's on our side!

1-0 out of 5 stars Hunting the Jackal
I'm a Vietnam veteran (Inf. 1Lt.), so I was interested in his experiences, both in combat and after. I was very disappointed.Much of what he writes is bs and he is so full of himself (he's a little guy with that "Napolean Complex"), that I actually threw the book in the trash after I'd finished.First time I'd ever done that with a book, as I usually pass them along when I'm finished. Not a good review, but that's my opinion. ... Read more

The Atlantic Paranormal Society, also known as T.A.P.S., is the brainchild of two plumbers by day, paranormal investigators by night: Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This is by far one of the best books EVER! The best part of Ghost Hunters is they are honest! They are not out there to take your money, and make you scared! They are based on facts and facts alone! Love you Jason and Grant!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars TAPS UNPLUGGED
I really enjoy the show because of how they approach the investigations. The book taps (excuse the pun) into the two men who made the show what it is today ontop of presenting cases not shown. It was great reading episodes you remember seeing plus getting more details about the investigations.

3-0 out of 5 stars It is 101
This book was a good read. It will teach you the very basics of hunting but not how to become a hunter. What i mean is if you are looking for a book that will teach you specifics like hunting etiquette or which rifle to use or things like that then this is not it. This book will give you a very broad idea of what hunting is like hence the title "Deer Hunting 101". If, like me, you have no hunting experience, this book is a good buy but it won't be the only reference that you will need.

Product Description

USA Today bestselling author Julia London, "a gifted and versatile author" (Publishers Weekly), introduces a sexy, wildly romantic and emotionally charged new trilogy in which three aristocratic young ladies, upon discovering they are destitute, resort to desperate means to keep up appearances...and find the husbands of their dreams.

When the young ladies of the Fairchild family learn that their stepfather has absconded with their late mother's fortune, Ava, the eldest, hunts down the notoriously wealthy rakehell Jared Broderick, the Marquis of Middleton and heir to a dukedom. Much to her shock and delight, the marquis sweeps her into a whirlwind romance and proposes marriage. But after their passionate wedding night, Ava discovers Jared has ulterior motives of his own. Not only does he expect her to deliver an heir while he continues to enjoy a rogue's life, but Ava also suspects she is a pawn in her husband's quest for revenge. Marriages of convenience work for some, but for Ava a loveless bond won't do. So she devises a bold plan to confront her husband's demons so that he might be free to choose to give her his heart for the right reason: because she is the only woman he will ever truly desire. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Hot and Sensual!!
What can I say she has written another great novel!! Hot and Sensual the way I like them those authors that think you can write romance novels without the spice are wrong. They need to learn from London. She makes reading her novels so fluid and smooth pulling you right into the time period, the places and the people. The beautiful way she describes the love scenes, the beautiful Ball Gowns and the Estates and their Gardens is amazing; she makes you feel like you are their. London has NEVER ( so far) let me down!!!! This is a must read! Very Well Done!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Hazards of Hunting a Duke
After her mother's death, Lady Ava Fairchild quickly discovers she must marry. Her step-father, who now controls her mother's fortune, plans to sell Ava, her sister, and her cousin to the highest bidder on the marriage market. That is, he will just as soon as he returns from France and his mistress. With little funds, Ava must find a way to stay in respectable society and snag a rich, but not too objectionable man.Remembering her witty exchange and delicious kiss with the Marquis of Middleton, Jared Broderick, Ava thinks she has found her answer.

As luck would have it, Jared is also looking for a wife.Actually, his father, the Duke of Redford, has decided it is past time for the young rake to settle down and produce some legitimate heirs. While his father already has a proper girl selected, Jared is more intrigued by Ava.More importantly, he will have stronger control over a wife of his own choosing.Of course, it also doesn't hurt that marrying Ava will stick it to his overbearing father.

A marriage of convenience seems like the answer to both problems, yet they quickly find that their marriage is anything but convenient. They are drawn together, but for Ava passion is not enough. She wants a love match, but can she get it?

The Hazards of Hunting a Duke is a lighthearted, sexy romp.Jared is a wonderful hero.He is deliciously wicked, but truly a good man.Although Ava was fun and sassy, she was also frustrating.Early in the story, she was sensible and intelligent, but as she tried to win Jared's love, her choices became extremely childish.Where did the competent young woman go?Much of the conflict seemed manufactured and pointless.Ava had to make stupid decisions, otherwise the story would end too soon. The secondary characters were a mixed bag. Some, like Ava's household staff, were hilarious, but other characters weren't as well developed.I had major problems with Jared's father. His actions throughout the story make his ending hard to buy. While I did have several issues with the story, it was an enjoyable afternoon's sensual escape. This was my first Julia London novel, and I'd love to read more. The first installment in the Desperate Debutants series has an intriguing start, but not without its faults

3-0 out of 5 stars If only Ava were more likeable
I'll start off by saying I really want to read the others in this series - that's the good news. The bad news is that's because the other characters in the book interested me more than the main characters in this one. They were on the edge of being good, but something was lacking.Jared is just a little too cliché of a rake and Ava is almost interesting (an example being the horse-riding bit) but they both get a bit too... emotional and unrealistic. And while the endings of romance novels are a bit predictable, this one seemed to rushed and tied up far too quickly (the sitcom-esque ending), and I felt let down by what had seemed an interesting storyline. There just seemed something a little off, a little missing about this book.It left me feeling unfulfilled, probably partially because the whole mysterious bit about Greer - though that is also what has made me want to read on, so it's a double-edged sword.

The bottom line is it's a decent romance, but not one to bump to the top of your to-read list.

4-0 out of 5 stars Redeemed?
Two things right off: 1. If you are a frequent reader of Julia London, you know that she likes the "redeemed hero" that starts off as a real [...]. 2. This has the typical plotline of woman strikes a deal of convenient marriage, falls for husband, and decides that only love with suit her.Ava needs money, Jared needs an heir. After their marriage Ava falls desperately in love with Jared and the hunt begins!

I liked Ava.She was very much a "historical figure," her preoccupations were those that I would expect from someone in that time period.Of course she had a modern/liberal streak in her and was quite bold and brazen. Her downfall was definitely her immense pride and narrowminded view when it came to getting what she wants... when she wants.I wish she would've outgrown that at some point, but all-in-all, Ava was a delight. (Much more so than Greer, who ruined the sequel for me.I won't even bother with writing a review for that work.)

Jared was a tough nut to chew.A lot was not revealed about his past until the very end, giving the audience a skewed perception of his actions.I don't feel like he was redeemed, but rather, his character was developed. He always had that love in him, he just couldn't put a name to it.Couldn't identify why it was he had those tender feelings where Ava was concerned and at first it scared him... causing him to put up walls between them.

The romance was excellent, as far as I am concerned. There were some points when my heart was just breaking at the desperate and awkward way these two characters clung to their muddled emotions looking for some sort of justification for inadvertently hurting each other at every turn. But, there were sweet tender moments that I enjoyed.Humorous, sweet incidents.Little things that London added to her work. One of my favorite little moments is when Ava is in her room, ignoring Jared the best that she can while trying to get lessons in seduction from Sally, her lady's maid.He hears giggling in her room at odd moments and repeatedly walks by it trying to get a listen of more.He feels stung that he's left out and misses her at dinner! So sweet.

My problem was the ex-mistress who tries to get in the way.Money-grubbing, catty, greedy, little hussy.Shows up at opportune moments, groveling before the hero as the heroine just happens to overlook and misinterpret the entire situation. It's such a played-out convention! Can we retire the use of the ex-mistress from now on?ENOUGH!

I also wish there could be more Jared-Edmond and Jared-the Duke.Such interesting relationships were not allowed to be developed fully. But, I enjoyed this novel none the less.I have hope for Phoebe!Greer was SUCH a dissapointment in the sequel.

4-0 out of 5 stars Delightful "marriage of convenience" novel
"Hazards" was my first experience reading a historical romance by Julia London. It is the first in the "Desperate Debutantes" series, the stories of three girls who lost their inheritance to an unscrupulous step-father. While Ava has some faults as a heroine, it doesn't detract from the story. Jared is a marquis and has a very strained relationship with his father, the duke. The relationship between Ava & Jared is strained at first, but becomes more romantic as the story progresses. I'm looking forward to Ms. London's next book in the series, "The Perils of Pursuing a Prince". ... Read more

Product Description
"Readers familiar with Barr's entertaining national park mystery series know that Anna rarely finds tranquility in God's country. Her fans can only be grateful that there are still plenty of national parks left for Anna Pigeon to visit."(People)

When Anna answers a call to historic Mt. Locust, once a producing plantation and inn on Mississippi's Natchez Trace Parkway and now a tourist spot, the last thing she expects to encounter is murder. But the man Anna finds in the stand's old bedroom is no tourist in distress. He's nearly naked, and very dead, his body bearing marks consistent with an S&M ritual gone awry. On a writing table nearby is an open Bible, ominous passages circled in red.

It seems the deceased is the brother of Raymond Barnette, local undertaker and a candidate for sheriff, who wants to keep any hint of kinkiness out of the minds of the God-fearing populace. Ray may be hiding a house full of secrets in the old family homestead, but before Anna can start her investigation, she's waylaid by malevolent poachers, peevish coworkers, and a suddenly turbulent romantic life. And when hidden agendas and old allegiances are revealed, it's suddenly Anna's life that's on the line.

Tightly plotted, brilliantly suspenseful, and beautifully written, Hunting Season offers solid evidence that mankind can be as unpredictable and dangerous as the great outdoors.Amazon.com Review
When the body of Doyce Barnett turns up in unsavory circumstances in Mississippi's Natchez Trace National Park, district ranger Anna Pigeon finds her investigation stymied at every turn. The dead man's brother, an undertaker with a secret that's been kept by three generations of his family, will do anything to protect it, even if his cover-up puts Anna's life in danger. Her own deputy, jealous because she got the job he wanted, seems to be sabotaging her case in order to advance his political ambitions. A bunch of Mississippi good old boys who've been poaching on park territory are gunning for her, and something strange is going on in a slave cemetery that's also in her bailiwick.

In this, her 10th outing, the prickly, ever-likable Ranger Pigeon puts all the pieces together in a lively, well-paced mystery that evokes two dimensions of the Deep South: its lush beauty and its tangled racial history, dimensions that, as Anna herself puts it, are "both a balm. History because its sins had already been committed, nature because she was supremely indifferent to the petty hysterias of the human race." --Jane Adams ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good story
This is a good story.I am trying to read all of the Anna Pideon Series by Nevada Barr.I like her writing and enjoy good stories about strong women.Disappointed that amazon search engine listed a cassette when specifically asked for CD.And disappointed in myself for not noticing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Killing Season
THE SETUP
District Manager, law enforcement ranger Anna Pigeon is called from the wedding of her (Black) field ranger Lonnie Reston to Mt. Locust (a historic inn on the Natches Trace Parkway, in Mississippi), where the body of "good ole boy" Doyce Barnett was just found.Coincidentally, a slave cemetery is located on park land between Mt. Locust and the Barnett family home, and Raymond Barnett, Doyce's younger brother is the local mortician, running for county sheriff.Randy Thigpen (think "pig pen"), another of Anna's field rangers who has gone far out of his way to make Anna's life miserable--since he had expected to be promoted to District Ranger.Randy will be retiring in a few months, and is also running for county sheriff. The third of Anna's field rangers, Barth Denkus, has been working to identify the graves in the slave cemetary. The current county sheriff is Clintus Jones.Anna's boyfriend is Paul Wilson, an Episcopal preist and the sheriff of an adjoining county. We soon learn that Doyce had three alleged poker buddies:Badger Lundtsrom, Martin Crowley, and Herm Thornton. That's the setup.Confused yet?It gets worse--there are about a dozen minor characters I haven't mentioned.

DEVELOPMENT containing possible spoilers:
Later Anna twice escape terrifying attempts on her life.As it turns out Doyces "poker buddies" are actually poachers. The sign identifying some graves in the slave cometary are desecrated.Raymond Barnett is building a child's coffin, although no children have died in the area recently.Back in the 1860s, a freeman with the last name Reston had been a partner in the cabinet business with the Barnett family.

CRITIQUE
This is one of the very best Barr novels, and that is saying a great deal. The mystery is intriguing and is uncovered at just the right pace.Several seemingly independent plotlines converge with a crash. The imagery and characterization are brilliantly vivid. For the reflective reader, Anna's incisive mussing will stay with you for years. This is my third reading, and it just gets better.Buy a hardcover.

3-0 out of 5 stars Forgetable Story, Still a Good Series
I'm still an Anna P fan, but I can whole heartedly say I don't remember much about this book.I listened to it about a week and a half ago, and my memories of the plot are fragmented and dull. The names stuck out certainly, but not much else. The wrap-up seemed so laid out. It's like the author used her synopsis as the last ch/ epilogue... this happens, then this happens, then this happens sort of feel to the end.

If this is your first Anna P book, pick up another, they're good ones out there.Endangered Species and Deep South are both nice entries.

4-0 out of 5 stars Anna Pigeon
I've read all of Navada Barr's works and will buy anything she writes. They are fast and easy reads. Makes me feel like I'm right there in the place she is writting about.Sometimes she get's a little over the top but that doesn't stop me from reading her. Right now reading IS my vacation. Now really what's better then a beautiful place and mystery.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed Feelings
It is hard to review anything by Nevada Barr, because her works contain, on one hand, passages of great beauty, as she describes various parts of our country. And then, there's the other hand:she tends to overdue many scenes of violence and pain.I find myself skipping over too many passages, because they sicken me. ... Product Description

The companion volume to the
bestselling Hemingway on Fishing

Ernest Hemingway's lifelong zeal for the hunting life is reflected in his masterful works of fiction, from his famous account of an African safari in "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber" to passages about duck hunting in Across the River and Into the Trees. For Hemingway, hunting was more than just a passion; it was a means through which to explore our humanity and man's relationship to nature. Courage, awe, respect, precision, patience -- these were the virtues that Hemingway honored in the hunter, and his ability to translate these qualities into prose has produced some of the strongest accounts of sportsmanship of all time.

Hemingway on Hunting offers the full range of Hemingway's writing about the hunting life. With selections from his best-loved novels and stories, along with journalistic pieces from such magazines as Esquire and Vogue, this spectacular collection is a must-have for anyone who has ever tasted the thrill of the hunt -- in person or on the page. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Hemingway on Hunting, Ernest Hemingway
It was good..but a bit long and sometimes it took several days
to read a chapter.

4-0 out of 5 stars eclectic ernest
Bits and pieces from E.H. fiction and nonfiction that are hunting-related.For the outdoor enthusiast, reading the excerpts in this book will be more convenient than reading some of the original novels (e.g. Across the River...)
Hemingway was a great writer because of his ability to be very descriptive while still being economical with his words.Enjoyable read.

1-0 out of 5 stars One for the book, but constellation for the author
As Hemingway the Zen master said, "Some are hunters, some are not." Several Hemingway scholars have treid to explain EH's lifelong affinity for blood sports (notably Bredahl and Drake's 1990 exegesis of Green Hills Of Africa) -- this "package of Papa" is content to just push whole chunks and raw excerpts of Hemingway onto a marketing skewer without any comment.Using "hunting" as a marketing criterion forces together the most flaccid posthumous Hemingway and some of his purest fiction and livliest reportage. It's obvious Hemingway wrote about hunting (and fishing) in the same sense the Homer wrote about Mediterranean tourism. Lazy readers may like the way this editor rearranged Hemingway's cabin furniture, but most of the writing actually seem the duller for being re-packaged to a less spontaneous purpose. Sad to see a great prose turned as a license for 'designer books,' and by his own kin. Some are artists, others are not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hemingway hunting related fiction and nonfiction compilation
The handsome book contains no new material but is a compilation of hunting-oriented short stories, non-fiction pieces and excerpts from novels. There's a very good scene from "Across the River and Into the Trees" about duck hunting from blinds near Venice. There is a nice selection of photographs of the author with various trophies. One in particular is spectacular showing Hemingway about to fire his rifle at a huge charging lion. The perspective is from just behind Hemingway, his rifle is raised to his shoulder and the onrushing lion appears to be only a few feet away. Another shows Hemingway standing next to same lion, now very dead.

The longish short story The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber" which is arguably his best short story is included. It tells the story of wealthy American and his beautiful wife on safari in Africa. The title character behaves shamefully during a lion hunt. That night, his wife sleeps with the white hunter to show her displeasure. The next day while hunting buffalo, he redeems himself and proves that he is not a coward, both to himself and to the onlookers. The short happy life of the title refers to that fact that soon after redeeming his injured manhood against the buffalo, his wife accidentally (or perhaps not accidentally) shoots him in the head as a wounded buffalo charges.

If you are a fan of Hemingway's you've probably read much of this stuff before elsewhere, the non-fiction pieces may be hardest to find elsewhere. This book makes a great gift for a hunting enthusiast who is not especially literary oriented. ... Read more

Product Description
Already acclaimed in England as "first-rate" (The Sunday Times); “a model of meticulous, courageous and path-breaking scholarship"(Literary Review); and "absorbing and thoroughly gripping… deserves a lasting place among histories of the war.” (The Sunday Telegraph), Hunting Evil is the first complete and definitive account of how the Nazis escaped and were pursued and captured  -- or managed to live long lives as fugitives.

At the end of the Second World War, an estimated 30,000 Nazi war criminals fled from justice, including some of the highest ranking members of the Nazi Party.  Many of them have names that resonate deeply in twentieth-century history -- Eichmann, Mengele, Martin Bormann, and Klaus Barbie -- not just for the monstrosity of their crimes, but also because of the shadowy nature of their post-war existence, holed up in the depths of Latin America, always one step ahead of their pursuers.  Aided and abetted by prominent people throughout Europe, they hid in foreboding castles high in the Austrian alps, and were taken in by shady Argentine secret agents. The attempts to bring them to justice are no less dramatic, featuring vengeful Holocaust survivors, inept politicians, and daring plots to kidnap or assassinate the fugitives.

In this exhaustively researched and compellingly written work of World War II history and investigative reporting, journalist and novelist Guy Walters gives a comprehensive account of one of the most shocking and important aspects of the war: how the most notorious Nazi war criminals escaped justice, how they were pursued, captured or able to remain free until their natural deaths and how the Nazis were assisted while they were on the run by "helpers" ranging from a Vatican bishop to a British camel doctor, and even members of Western intelligence services.  Based on all new interviews with Nazi hunters and former Nazis and intelligence agents, travels along the actual escape routes, and archival research in Germany, Britain, the United States, Austria, and Italy, Hunting Evil  authoritatively debunks much of what has previously been understood about Nazis and Nazi hunters in the post war era, including myths about the alleged “Spider” and “Odessa” escape networks and the surprising truth about the world's most legendary Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal.

From its haunting chronicle of the monstrous mass murders the Nazis perpetrated and the murky details of their postwar existence to the challenges of hunting them down, Hunting Evil is a monumental work of nonfiction written with the pacing and intrigue of a thriller.

4-0 out of 5 stars good read
Though I am not finish reading the book.I am impressed with the information that is in the book. Things you think about the war you never would have known because they are not put in the history books. The notion of how bad the Nazies where and how much help or how much the allies really cared about bringing people to justice. It also brings out the Alli namely the US support of dictators in south and central america. Something that I would have never thought about is the Arab support of the Nazies after the war. This is something that I and others have never thought or even would have guessed. But on the flip side the Jewish support and namely that theyget away with going into another country without any type of prosecution is astounding. Good book! Thanks CBC

3-0 out of 5 stars Lacking focus
The book started off well enough but it quickly lost focus. This seems to be a trends in books where journalists attempt to write about history. The book is just as much about discrediting Simon Wiesenthal as it is about fugitive Nazis. While this may be deserved (I don't know and I don't care), it seems to me to be a topic for a different book. The author re-trods a lot of familiar ground--Eichmann, Mengele, Bormann, Barbie--but does cover some (for me) new material as well. The discussion about ODESSA was interesting. Overall, however, the books was unsatisifying.

Not terrible but not recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars The real and accurate story of Nazi Hunters
This book is an exhaustive and extensively researched work revealing and exposing certain misinformation about the long hunt for Nazi war criminals. It alsoexposes certain myths about Simon Wiesenthal who was given much more credit for nabbing these criminals than he deserved and identifies other Nazi hunters who actually had more success than Wiesenthal in locating these criminals. It reveals many hunters who succeeded in locating these criminals but have not nearly the same reputation as Mr Wiesenthal, who, for all his admirable vigor in pursuing them was actually far less successful than other hunters who are not well known. Much credit should be given to the author who did such extensive research so that the full truth of this inspiring story could be known.I would have liked to have known that the author corrected the widely-held belief about Simon Wiesenthal's true background and personality as well as his taking credit for the successes of other Nazi hunters.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Imperfect Hunt for Former Nazis
With the end of the Second World War, there was much that had to be repaired, and among the human repairs that were needed was hunting the former Nazis that joined the teeming displaced masses. There is a perception that there was a postwar Nazi network "Odessa," the members of which were pursued by determined investigators like Simon Wiesenthal. It all fits into our sense of justice, and unfortunately it is mostly untrue.Yes, the victors did have efforts to bring the former Nazis to justice, and they are chronicled by historian and journalist Guy Walters in _Hunting Evil: The Nazi War Criminals Who Escaped & the Quest to Bring Them to Justice_ (Broadway Books). But Walters says that he learned so much about what actually happened, so much that was scandalous and infuriating, that he almost called his book _Hunting Evil (Or Not)_.While justice was done in some big cases, it was delayed in many others, and delayed sometimes until the former Nazis had lived out their lives in full.Often they were helped by the Catholic Church or by nations who were glad to get their help in fighting one side or the other of the Cold War.And sadly, Simon Wiesenthal, regarded by many as a hero in the hunt, played a consequential role in only a few captures, while boasting that he had been instrumental in hundreds.Walters's book has excitement in it, as it describes some of the hunts that were eventually successful.More often, it is a necessary but disheartening account of how far from the ideal was the search for Nazi criminals. The decades have rolled on and the hunt is over; _Hunting Evil_ is an important summary of how justice was done, and in many cases was not.

There were loose organizations that helped former Nazis out of Europe, though they were nothing like the Odessa organization that was imagined by Frederick Forsyth in the book and resultant movie _The Odessa File_.There were ways that former Nazis did get to South America, for instance, but it was by haphazard efforts. It is astonishing how many of these efforts were aided by the Catholic Church.Adolf Eichmann wrote: "It was odd how throughout my escape journey I was helped by Catholic priests... In their eyes, I was just another human being on the road."It was not only church officials who did what they could to help the former Nazis and keep them from trial or punishment. The governments after the war found that there was little political will to spend effort and money to try the thousands of war criminals who deserved trials.Friedrich Buchardt, for instance, may have been responsible for 100,000 deaths, but got post-war paychecks from Britain's MI6, and later aided the Americans, and instead of being hung, he died quietly in his bed forty years after the war. There are many distressing pages in Walters's work, for he has to detail the crimes for which these former Nazis were hunted (or should have been). The lack of motivation of the Allies to ensure justice, too, is disheartening. The most surprising and disappointing revelations, though, are about Simon Wiesenthal, who was a media focus as a Jewish seeker of vengeance, and whom many knew as "The Man Who Never Forgets."He is celebrated as some sort of secular saint, and got plenty of awards and was nominated repeatedly for the Nobel Peace Prize.Walters shows, and shows conclusively, that Wiesenthal invented much of his own autobiography and exaggerated his achievements."Wiesenthal's reputation is built on sand.He was a liar, and a bad one at that."Wiesenthal claimed, for instance, that the capture of Adolf Eichmann in Argentina in 1960 was his greatest triumph, but in documenting the story of the capture here (and it is an exciting part of the book), Walters shows that Wiesenthal contributed slightly and the contribution was more of a hindrance to the Mossad agents, not a help.Wiesenthal inexcusably hounded a Polish immigrant, Chicagoan Frank Walus, for collaboration with the Gestapo and other crimes; no such crimes had occurred, and Walus got a payment and an apology from the US government. He never recovered his reputation, however, and Wiesenthal and his organization just kept quiet about ruining it.

Walters allows that Wiesenthal did provide essential help in a dozen or so captures, but not the 1,500 he claimed. He allows also that Wiesenthal had the enthusiasm to work on the right team when many others who could have prevented injustice were letting former Nazis go.Wiesenthal also provided a focus for the world to think that justice was being done. The beginning epigram for _Hunting Evil_, however, is from Petronius: "_Mundus vult decipi_" - "The world wants to be deceived."I take it that Walters deliberately left off the last part of Petronius's sentence, "_...ergo decipiatur_," which adds: "so let it be deceived."The book is a study of deceptions on the part of Nazis, governments, church officials, and Nazi hunters; if the world wants to be deceived about them, it will be only despite the revelations in _Hunting Evil_.

2-0 out of 5 stars Is this book about Wiesenthal?
Ok, we get it, Wiesenthal was an obnoxious baffoon. You don't agree with his methods, tactics and how he presented his findings or lack thereof. But do you really need to spend the entire book, which, according to the synopsis, is about escaped Nazis, on how Wiesenthal was this and how Wiesenthal was that.Just write a book called "Wiesenthal, the fake Nazi hunter" and get it over with.

It is a pity, because the author had obviously conducted great research on the subject, interviewed main protagonists and it all came down to name calling and finger pointing.

Therefore, I wouldn't be using this book as a resource on ex-Nazis. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars For The Most Inexperienced Beginner
This book covers the most basic parts of hunting birds. If you already have some equipment and want to increase your success rates, look for another book as this one has very little depth. I would recommend this book to someone who has no decoys, no guns, no blinds and no experience whatsoever, otherwise find a different book because this one will disappoint you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great primer book for waterfowling
While this book doesn't get into much depth, it is a fine survey of the sport of waterfowling. Though it is largely a collection of broad discussions on topics such as weather, dogs, guns, and waterfowl behavior, Smith is a great writer and his stories of experiences in the field are always engaging and entertaining. You can tell this man has spent thousands of hours out in the field and he has the knowledge to prove it. Whether you're looking for an entry-level introduction to the sport or a refresher with some pretty good tips and tricks along the way, this book is a winner. However, if you're looking for a really in-depth discussion of bird behavior, choosing hunting spots, or how to clean and cook a bird, choose another book on that topic. But overall, an informative and engaging read. I am pleased.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of this book in the first edition
I havent read the 2nd release of this but I have almost finished the first and it is a great book for the new guy to the old guy in the field.
the stories are fun and covers several different topics about the sport from guns, gear, dogs and so on.
I look fwd to finding more books by him assome are marked on the back cover of the Library version I am reading now.

Thank you

5-0 out of 5 stars Resource for Novice or Experienced Hunters
This book is useful for all hunters, either novice or expert afield. The author has a straightforward easy style that is effective in presenting information while at the same time keeping the reader's interest.I found his chapter on squirrel hunting especially good. There are several recipes included which provides the logical and practical conclusion after successfully mastering his techniques.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ultimate Guide To Small Game
It's hard to describe. The information is good, but the layout is dull and uninspiring. It does not make for an easy, or interesting read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Partitioned book not for the novice hunter.
This book breaks down hunting different species by chapter. One chapter on squirrels, one on rabbits and hares, one on coyotes, etc.It discusses the types of firearms to use for each species and the different methods for hunting them. This seems like a good idea if an individual has access to land with a dense population of these animals that can be tracked and monitored before the hunt. This is good if one is going to hunt nothing but rabbits all day; or nothing but foxes all day; but what if an individual wants to go out hunting for any small game he comes upon in unfamiliar land? The book doesn't really address this, and the reader must make his own decisions based upon experience and knowledge of firearms. The author assumes that everyone has access to a dozen different guns, and can take all of these guns out in the field to use whenever the situation calls for it.This book also lacks a section on hunting upland birds (grouse, pheasant, etc.).Not a bad book for the seasoned hunter, but could've been presented better for the novice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative!
This book is very informative. If you are just starting out, or considering trying you luck with a critter that maybe you have less experience with, then you will find this book very helpful. Chapter 12 is on firearms safety, 13 is on hunting ethics, and 14 (the last chapter) covers processing game and includes some interesting game recipes. I think there is a little something in this book for everyone that enjoys hunting and someone just beginning to take up hunting is sure to benefit the most. My teenage daughters recently expressed an interest in hunting (much to my surprise) and I bought this book hoping to find material that would cover a wide range on hunting topics.I hunt, but until this year never considered that my girls would have an interest in hunting and I neglected the opportunity of starting their hunting education earlier. I think this book is just what I was looking for and will be a great way to get them started, along with the basic hunters certification course and actual time in the field with dad. I highly recommend!

2-0 out of 5 stars Looking back -- not looking forward (or around)
While it has several good points, this book, like the companion book "What Color is Your Parachute", suffers from a lack of understanding of how quickly things change on the Internet. This book (and the companion) still publishes the same tired source-of-hire data that has been around since about 2001. Up to 24% of jobs come from the NEWSPAPER? (That's a statistic from SHRM in 1997, back when Netscape still dominated the Web browser war.) Every reliable source I've read since 2005 indicates that jobs are sourced through newspapers at around 3-5%.

The author has numerous "best-picks" websites or articles that were published in 2002...while interesting, they were out of date. Blogs get a 1 paragraph mention, LinkedIn gets less than 1 page, and Facebook and Twitter aren't even considered (and their respective job-source potentials are all growing). For a book published in 2008, it seems like it was just a rehash of the Parachute book from 2001 with a few new websites added here-and-there to make it seem current.

Save your money. If you want to buy an online job search book, at least find one that is published in 2010 and doesn't rely on 10-year-old statistics.

Product Description

For nearly a decade, Bill Heavey, an outdoorsman marooned in suburbia, has written the “Sportsman’s Life” column on the back page of Field & Stream, where he does for hunting and fishing what David Feherty does for golf and Lewis Grizzard did for the South. His work is adored by readers—one proclaims him “the greatest sportswriter who has ever walked the planet”—and his peers have recognized his work with three prestigious National Magazine Award nominations. If You Didn’t Bring Jerky, What Did I Just Eat? is the first collection of Heavey’s hilarious observations on life as an enthusiastic (but often hapless) outdoorsman. Whether he’s hunting cougars in the southwest desert, scheming to make his five-year-old daughter fall in love with fishing, or chronicling his father’s slow decline through the lens of the numerous dogs he’s owned over seventy-five years, Heavey is a master at blending humor and pathos—and wide-ranging outdoor enthusiasms—into a poignant and potent stew. Funny, warmhearted, and supremely entertaining, this book is an uproarious addition to the literature of the outdoors. The paperback edition features two new pieces.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's not Patrick Mcmanus
I lost interest in the book about halfway through and some of the stories were not funny at all actually quite sad, not what I was hoping for.

5-0 out of 5 stars I HEAR IT'S VERY FUNNY
I purchased two of these books as gifts because I know people that hunt! I have not read it myself, but the feedback I have gotten is nothing but positive. I've heard everything from "I had to stop reading because my eyes were watering so badly from laughing" to "I thought I was the only one who had an experience like that". So I guess if you are a hunter you will be able to relate. From my feedback, it get's an A.

Haven't read it, but the title alone and a quick glance through left us hooting!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book and Author
I love Bill Heavey... I subscribe to Field and Stream expressly for his articles.I love Lilyfish. To write about something so close to you, amazing.I will gladly put a few dollars in his pocket to have this book.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars BUY THIS BOOK!!! Laughter Guaranteed!
During the last hunting season I bought this book to read during the the downtime.I would not bring this book to a tree stand or a deer blind.I have never found myself laughing so much while reading a book in my entire life.I began reading the stories to my wife when we were going to bed. There were evenings when we were laughing so hard together that we had tears streaming down our faces. For those few people who bought this book and didn't like it, perhaps you don't get the humor.Perhaps you don't pour your heart and soul into hunting and fishing like some of us crazy obsessed fools do.If you are passionate about hunting and fishing and can laugh at yourself (or at least at Bill Heavey) you will enjoy this book.I wish Heavey had enough stories that my wife and I could read them every night for the rest of our lives. But then he wouldn't have any time to get out into the woods. 5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT READ!
Fast shipping, arrived in great condition! My fiace is an avid hunter and said he thoroughly enjoyed it!

2-0 out of 5 stars Small book for the price
This book looked amazing in the picture. However, when I received it in the mail, it was quite dinky. The price is too much for the size of the book. I bought it for my hunter-boyfriend. I was disappointed when I finally got it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Look at Life from a Deer Stand
I bought this for my husband to take to his deer stand, and he was touched by the stories. He said that he could identify with most of them, and many of the lessons about life made him think about his own life and relationships, etc.He thought that all deer hunters should have a copy!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Necessity For All Hunters
Once I picked this book up and started reading it, I couldn't put it down. I made the mistake of taking it hunting with me thinking "Oh, a book that will keep me thinking about hunting so I won't get too distracted..." Well actually, this book did the exact opposite. It almost made me miss a deer.

But as for the book itself, it isn't just some collection of hunting successes and failures. It's Chapman's own opinion on how morals and lessons learned through hunting are incorporated into every hunter's life. It is beautifully written and the illustrations included at the beginning of each of the chapters are not only appropriate, but they also serve as reminders of good and bad times to hunters (I certainly remember looking at a few of those pictures and thinking "Hey, I've been in that situation before too... good times...").

Chapman has done an excellent job on this book. If you have an appreciation for hunting that goes beyond the simplicity of just going out into the wilderness to shoot things, and an equally strong appreciation for your religion (The bible is quoted throughout the book for those who would like to know, but there is no in-depth interpretation of it. He isn't trying to promote religion, just show how his love for hunting and his religion go hand-in-hand), then I highly recommend that you read this book.

I lent the book to a friend so I don't have it with me as I write this review to quote it properly, but I do have an idea about how my favorite line in the book goes. It was something along the lines of making the most of your life before "life comes up behind you, taps you on the shoulder, and tells you the hunt is over." This quote goes with a short story told earlier in the chapter, but it still has a powerful meaning behind it nonetheless.

So as mentioned before, if this sounds at all interesting to you, go ahead and get the book. This is one story you'll never regret reading.

Product Description
William Wasserman, a one-man wrecking crew who routinely confronted hostile, armed poachers in the backwoods of Pennsylvania and brought them to justice, writes about his encounters with outlaw hunters in a gritty, heart-pounding style that is sure to keep you turning pages until the last chapter has been read. Poacher Wars a prequel to Wasserman's second book Game Warden is an intense, well written account about a true wildlife warrior and his fight against the criminals who plunder our natural resources. It's a book that will make you think about it long after you put it down. A book about a thin green line of dedicated game wardens, vastly outnumbered, who risk their lives on a daily basis in order to protect our wildlife for future generations to come.

As a Pennsylvania Game Warden, Wasserman patrolled 400 square miles of rugged mountain terrain where he investigated thousands of game law violations and arrested many violent career poachers. Throughout his career, he encountered a number of poachers who were convicted felons, including murderers, drug addicts, dope dealers, and outlaw bikers. This fascinating, true-life book contains sixteen chapters about some of the most dangerous and unpredictable men Wasserman encountered during his 32 years as a state game warden.

Excerpts from Poacher Wars:
I imagined my chest being ripped apart by a brutal magnum slug as I picked my way up the mountain. Then I quickly shook the nightmare out of my head, my skull screaming back at me that in thirty years of chasing armed poachers, I had always come out unscathed...

Sinbad came barreling around the corner in an astounding wheel stand! He was coming straight for me, his red mane billowing wildly about his head, lips twisted in a lunatic grin...

He could see two men inside, two rifles on the seat between them. And in that fleeting second, he realized he was outnumbered and outgunned! He reached back quickly and grabbed the butt of his revolver, pulling it from his holster...

I looked back at the injured man. Bud had his shirt open, his body deathly white. Thick, purplish blood seeped from his wound. He could die right here! I thought grimly...

Whether you're a sportsman, hunter, or just an armchair enthusiast and you enjoy reading the true accounts of what goes on out in the field and behind the scenes of wildlife enforcement officers, this book is for you. It's rare you can get a first hand account of what it's really like dealing with the criminal types who break the law freely without concern for wildlife.Bill Wasserman pulls no punches telling it like it is and what he's had to deal with.If you still can't get enough after finishing this, get "Game Warden:Adventures of a Wild Life Warrior", Bill's newest book in which the adventure continues at a fast pace with non stop action. You won't be dissappointed, I promise. The book complete's the set and compliment each other. All we can hope for is more!

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish it were longer!
A very interesting look at poaching written by WCO Wasserman. It gives the reader an appreciation of the work performed by PA Game Commission deputies each hunting season. Some of the stories will make you laugh and some will make you understand how dangerous this line of work can be. I read the whole book cover to cover in one sitting. I only wish it were longer. Very good read for any outdoorsman.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Husband Loved this Book
My husband has read Pennsylvania Game News for years and he's a big fan of Joe Parry. So, I bought Joe's first book when I was in a bookstore in Wellsboro PA. One of the people who work at the bookstore told me that if my husband liked "Of A Predatory Heart" that he would also love "Poacher Wars" by William Wasserman. My husband loved them both. If your husband is a fan of outdoor writing, you aren't going to go wrong with either of these books. Hope to see more. It makes my shopping easier. ... Read more
