Product Description
Hurling is arguably the oldest field game in the world. In BC 1272 reference was made to a game in which strength, speed, stamina, skill, dexterity, and endurance were the key qualities; no mention is made of frees or fouls, referees or sideline cuts.

Over the centuries hurling has evolved into a more regulated but still exciting and passion-rousing game. It is played in every county of Ireland, and has attracted people from all walks of life.

This special collection provides fascinating information about the origins and evolution of this quintessentially Irish game, as well as its requirements and its attractions, the competitions and grades, the GAA founders, and the great players. Attractively presented and illustrated and at a very affordable price, this little book is a must for tourist and native alike. ... Read more

Product Description
After Clare's breakthrough in the mid-1990s, Hurling entered an era of unprecedented excitement and unpredictability, with new teams emerging to challenge the old powers. "Hurling: The Revolution Years" tells the untold stories of this extraordinary period. Denis Walsh gets behind the scenes in Ger Loughnane's Clare and Liam Griffin's Wexford and explores the mentality that made Offaly so different. He has conducted thirty-five original interviews including frank conversations with legends like D.J. Carey and Anthony Daly that evoke this period in thrilling detail and shed fresh light on the dramas that shook the hurling world, on and off the field. If you thought you already knew the story of hurling's revolution, think again. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and insightful look at the most exciting era in the history of hurling
This is definitely not a general book explaining the game of hurling ... it is a look at the teams and personalities, players, managers, (and county boards) that defined today's inter-county hurling. Starting with the rise of Clare in the mid 90's, ending with the Cork players (1st) strike in 2002. Chapters are self contained, entertaining and focused on particular teams, campaigns, players or incidents, with plenty of quotes from the people involved.

The period covered was a tremendously interesting and competitive one, and saw the rise of teams like Clare and Waterford, stars like DJ Carey and Brien Whelahan, and managers like Ger Loughnane. The book also covers teams like Kerry and Down playing for the love of the game with little hope of reaching the top.

A fantastic book for hurling fans.As a Corkman I particularly enjoyed the coverage of the '99 All Ireland and the strike ( one and a half out of 10 chapters, so there's plenty for the non-Rebel fans too ), the chapters on Clare in '95 and '98 were wonderful, Waterford and the McCarthys, DJ, BW, Wexford, Tipp, Limerick, Offaly, Kilkenny....

If you have any interest in the modern game of hurling and the people that made it great, you won't be disappointed in this book.

Product Description
Hurling is one of the oldest field games in the world. From earliest times sport has been one of man's activities.Striking a ball with a stick or kicking it with the foot has always been a popular pastime. In Ireland, striking a ball with a stick is called hurling and is a game that has been popular in the country for at least 3000 years, with the first literary reference to it dating from 1272 B.C.

Today, hurling has evoled into one of Ireland's most popular sports and represents an integral part of Ireland's rich heritage. The game today is organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association (G.A.A.), a voluntary organisation that was founded in 1884.

From the beginning, the G.A.A. attempted to spread the gospel of hurling outside Ireland.Star teams of hurlers were sent abroad to advertise the game and hurling was organised among the many Irish communities around the globe.

This book tells the history of those efforts and how the game was played in the United Kingdom and America, in Argentina and South Africa, in Australia and New Zealand, in fact in any place the Irish settled in substantial numbers. The book is a follow up to A History of Hurling by the same author. ... Read more

Product Description
“By turns soothingly tender or implacably harsh, Hurling Words at Consciousness is an unflinching meditation on our globalized inequities. It is thoughtful and richly rewarding.”--Tejumola Olaniyan, University of Wisconsin-Madison “Mukoma wa Ngugi is a poet of extraordinary expressive gifts. This impressive volume casts a critical yet forgiving eye on closely-observed episodes from life in the United States, with knowing glances towards poets as diverse as Le'opold Se'dar Senghor and Matthew Arnold. The social concerns of an African poet in sympathy with political struggles throughout the Third World here jostle up against and defamiliarize thedetails of North American everyday life, which then suddenly take on new significance.”--Nicholas Brown, University of Illinois at Chicago“While treating the reader to an expansive range of themes - death, war, life, love, nature, human relationships/encounters, personal reflections, art, politics, history, social justice, revolution and others – Mukoma wa Ngugi also succeeds in making a deeply profound, artistic statement. He decorates his intensely reflective utterance with a lacework of images, metaphors and other forms of figurative expression that reveal a keen artist at his craft. With this first volume of poetry, Mukoma wa Ngugi has clearly entered the world of published poets in style!”--Micere Mugo Githae, Syracuse University“Like his late mentors, Frantz Fanon and Walter Rodney, Mukoma is a catalyst, a circuit board, a generator. Through his writings and activism, he expresses the idea within which many will think change, the dream within which many will envision change, and the hope within which many will imagine change.”--Meredith Terreta, LeMoyne College ... 11. Hooked: A Hurling Life

Product Description
Sean Moran from The Irish Times finds in Justin McCarthy's new book an absorbing, human story that parallels the evolution of the GAA. Justin McCarthy. Few names in hurling command as much respect. Babs Keating has said he and Frank Cummins would have formed the ultimate midfield pairing. Christy Ring's biographer, Val Dorgan, described him as having 'an unsurpassed technical knowledge of hurling'. Ger Loughnane gave him his jersey after McCarthy's last game as Clare coach, while Johnny Callinan claims he was the best coach he ever had. Elsewhere, the terms stylist, guru, enthusiast and pioneer have been routinely used to describe the second-youngest man to win Hurler of the Year and the youngest coach to win a national league title. So too though has the word 'traitor' by some within Cork after McCarthy became the first high-profile hurling figure to coach outside and against his native county. His individualistic and forthright manner was particularly unpopular among the county board which twice ousted him from the Cork coaching job even though he delivered an All-Ireland and remained unbeaten in Munster while in that role.In this sometimes humorous, sometimes sad but always candid book, McCarthy recounts one of the most varied, fascinating and influential careers in hurling history. He tells of how he came from an unfashionable club to being Hurler of the Year at twenty-one; of how he bounced back from nearly losing his leg in a motorbike accident to playing in another All-Ireland final; of how his passion for his sport drove a then 25-year-old to coach Antrim to an All-Ireland title during the Troubles; of his time coaching the great Clare team of Loughnane, Stack and Hehir; of how he masterminded the Centenary All-Ireland win for Cork; of his coaching missions in the quiet fields of Ireland; and, for the first time, of his stormy relations with the Cork County Board. Quite simply, Hooked is a compelling read for every fan of the national game. ... Read more

Early games were played at Rahin which was part of the Estate of Sir Anthony Weldon on a pitch that was extensively used for cricket, but the local lads made good use of this field for games of football. The local men played with various teams in the locality in the early years of the association, Ballylinan men John Wynne, Din Carter Snr, Ned Vaughan and Marks Condron were involved with the Wolfhill team that clamed Laois Senior honours in 1896. It is recalled that Jimmy Wynne of Ballylinan used to walk to Graiguecullen three times a week to train with the Carlow border club. There was a Club at Drimroe, a townsland a mile from the Village, which played in the Laois Championship and it was here that the Wynnes, Luke and John, The Hylands, The Caseys, Din Carter and Pat McDonald also plied their trade. John and Harry Hyland also played with Barrowhouse and helped them qualify for a junior final in which they were beaten by a Kellyville team which featured Mick McHugh.
