He played hurling with the famous Ahane club from 1930 until 1948 and was a member of the Limerick senior inter-county team from 1930 until 1947. Mackey is widely regarded as one of the greatest hurlers in the history of the game. Almost unanimously regarded as the second-best hurler of all-time (with even many claiming that Mackey was the best), many former players, commentators and fans believe that the only other player who could be said to have bested him was the unparalleled Christy Ring. Mackeys status as one of the all-time greats is self-evident. In a senior inter-county career that lasted for seventeen years he was the star player on the team during Limerick's golden age of hurling. Mackey won three All-Ireland titles, five Munster titles, five consecutive National Hurling League titles and eight Railway Cup titles with Munster. They currently compete in the Derry Senior Football Championship and Division 1 of the Derry ACFL. The club is named after Saint Canice, who was born in 516AD in Cianacta Glinne Geimin, which is modern day Dungiven. Although the club, St. Canices, was founded in 1943 there is firm evidence that Gaelic games were played in Dungiven over a century before that. The first record of Gaelic Football played by a Dungiven team was a match on the 9 April 1922. The game was against Creggan (from Faughanvale Parish). The Dungiven team of that time played under the name of John Mitchels G.F.C. and they clinched the North Derry League that year. After a few years there was a dormant period but during the mid 1930s there was a resurgence of local interest in Gaelic Football. The local curate Father Colm Mc Goldrick who in 1936 was made chairman of the refounded North Derry Board encouraged the Dungiven Club to regroup.
