Product Description
Greg Proops examines the fast, furious and fascinating sport of hockey. He begins in Nova Scotia where the locals teach him about "hurley" and the sport's development through the harsh times of the 1800s to the fast-paced game we know today. Episode two focuses on the 20s through the 50s when the sport's excitement captivated Americans. Episode three covers the 60s and how aggression had stormed the rink and violence became a feature of the game. Episode four looks to the future and explains why hockey is here to stay. ... I bought this audio book with the expectation of a history of the development of the game, as the title would suggest. Which is what I recieved on the first CD. The second CD, however, is about the development -- or lack thereof -- of ice hockey in Great Britain. Also, there are only the two CD's, in packaging and at a price that would suggest four CD's. I was very underwhelmed, and would never recommend this selection to anyone. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book that touches on every aspect
Overall, this is a great book that touches on all aspects of hockey. I am a high school hockey coach and this book has some really nice drills and information in it. We are using a couple already in practice that work great. One thing that I was hoping for (4 stars instead of 5)was a little more intense drills or more detailed info for the higher levels of hockey. Also, it only has 3 goalie drills which was a little disturbing. As a goalie coach as well as an assistant, I find that upsetting since the position is so important, but yet it's the most overlooked. However if you are a parent or coach looking for a book that touches on every aspect of hockey as well as drills this is definitely the one. I do find the parts on dealing with parents and setting up practice plans also helpful. It was well written and has a lot of great info from an NHL player and Stanley Cup winner. It is one of the best books that puts it all together for you to learn the sport of hockey. I would suggest picking up the book: Complete hockey instruction by Dave Chambers with this book and as far as goaltending is concerned, go to www.hockeygoaltender.com. That has some of the best info concerning that position. With these 3 items you would have a pretty good arsenal on coaching and understanding the sport.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unsurpassed Clarity, Detail & Readability!
I was floored by thoroughness of expertise and professionalism in this book, which goes hand-in-hand with the sheer passion for the game and wisdom in teaching children that comes through on every page.No detail of technique, sportsmanship or strategy is left out here, and the book is as useful a guide for would-be coaches inexperienced in the ways of the game as it is for veteran coaches looking broaden their knowledge base.

Bruce Driver's talent both as a former Stanley Cup winner and a long time coach combined with Clare Wharton's flawless and engaging writing style makes this book an absolute must for hockey lovers new and old.

5-0 out of 5 stars REFEREE RECOMMENDATION
As a USA Hockey certified Referee I recommend this book to anyone involved in youth hockey at any level. This is how hockey should be taught.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book has it all
A complete resource for coaches, yes, but also something every hockey fan and parent should read too.Presented in a concise and logical manner, with no detail left out.Extensive photos and drill diagrams for all situations.I found it to be very well written. ... Read more

Excellent condition when received. This book offers detailed insight for those coaches that want to immerse themselves in the next level of coaching.Certainly not for the beginner coach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners
I was taking a coaching class in college and used this book to supplement my class text books.Had some very good tips for new coaches and how to get the players involved.Introduced good concepts.Would recommend.

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless
Clearly not written by hockey people.

I could give numerous examples like pg 40 "Get Your Players' Attention""Make sure they aren't looking into the sun or at some distracting activity."

Practic plans are a joke.No way someone could run a 50 min practice based on these practice plans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hockey review
I needed to understand how to teach children under 10 the game of Hockey and start towards gaining a coaching award in this age group. This book gives me a greater understanding of what turns on a childs interest and haw to maintain this interest.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must for the Hockey Coach's Toolkit
This book offers a comprehensive set of introductory materials needed for the first time or experienced hockey coach. It is useful for either ice or roller hockey.I particularly appreciated the author's including thesocial, communication, and motivational aspects of coaching youth sports. Full of handy checklists and drills to emphasize the needed skills, thisbook provides a solid foundation for developing "your own" hockeyteaching and coaching program. The drills and progressions are excellent. The book would be better with more technical emphasis on skating skills andtechniques. But overall, I would recommend it for any coach or parent whois close to this fast-growing sport! ... Read more

Product Description
One of the oldest beliefs in racing is that it takes several years of track time before a young driver gains the experience needed to win at the NASCAR Winston Cup Series level. That notion, however, has been shattered over the last 10 years, due in large part to four-time Winston Cup champion Jeff Gordon.

Gordon didn't win a single race during his rookie season, 1993.But in the years that followed many team owners, who had been relying on veteran racers, began to add young, unproven drivers to their teams.Gordon's third full season on tour saw him pick up seven victories to edge the late Dale Earnhardt by a mere 34 points and win first Winston Cup championship.

At that point, fans, the media, and team owners couldn't help but notice the sport's young drivers, who were eagerly awaiting the opportunity to get a Winston Cup ride.Gordon, now 31 years old, opened many doors for the young guns who have become a huge factor in Winston Cup racing.

If skeptics still found it hard to acknowledge the youth trend, they could no longer ignore it when Tony Stewart entered the Winston Cup scene during the 1999 season. He had the greatest rookie year in history with three victories and a third place finish in the final point standings.

During the following season, the 2000 campaign, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Matt Kenseth engaged in one of the greatest Rookie-of-the-Year battles in Winston Cup history. The young Earnhardt scored two victories and Kenseth earned one, but Kenseth edged his close friend and fellow competitor for the top rookie award.

After the last-lap crash at the Daytona 500 that claimed the life of seven-time champion Dale Earnhardt, Kevin Harvick moved up to NASCAR's top rank during 2001 as a driver for veteran team owner Richard Childress. In a painful season for many, Harvick picked up two wins and finished ninth in the final point standings to easily win top rookie honors over Kurt Busch.

The fight for the 2002 Winston Cup Rookie-of-the-Year award is down to first-year drivers Jimmie Johnson and Ryan Newman. While Johnson picked up two victories early in the season and is in position to become the first rookie driver to win a Winston Cup title, Newman has also had a great year. It's a rookie battle that won't likely be decided until the checkered flag is thrown at this year's season finale in Miami.

Race fans and the public now know that these young guns are a major factor in NASCAR Winston Series racing. These up-and-coming stars appear poised to help carry the sport into the future. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful and a quick fun read!
Must have for any hockey fan or fantasy player. Offers a great perspective on the business side of hockey and the evaluation of players. More than just stats, enjoyable read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Hockey Resource
Each year before the season starts, I diligently prepare for my draft(s).We only play for bragging rights, but we are a competitive bunch. This is the best book that I have found in the last 3 years to cut down the prep time. It's well written and to the point. It's not just a yearly review or projection, it's a sound strategy... advice that you can apply throughout the year to win your pool.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice read
Rob Higgins HFI book, is probably the best fantasy sport book read.It puts you in the mind of Rob on how he approaches fantasy hockey. This is a book you will page back through the season. It kind of reminds me of the movie the Transporter, Rob gives you rules to follow throughout the season. So I do recommend this book to have. With that said here are the cons and things he needs to add to next years book.

The HFI isn't a value for all fantasy hockey leagues.Example his HFI of Joe Thornton is quite low last season compared to our value system that had him at number 8 best forward at the end of the year.Second is just like fantasy football predraft materials, Rob should add a expert mock draft.People like to see how to apply your rating scale to a draft.Third point is he takes a back seat to giving you an idea on goalies. It is the most important position in Fantasy Hockey.Would like a better breakdown of your top 15 goalies and why. When is it a good time to take a goalie in a draft.Final point is go out on a limb.Tell us who are Core players in your mind, and who are some sleepers.

From the time you receive the book it's alot of search for answers going into the draft. So for a draft book its nice, but falls short. As a good read and a book you can use for this season and many more its awesome.I recommend the book, but don't count on it as the only predraft material going into your draft.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not meant for Kindle
I want to be clear that my review for this book is for the Kindle version only.I was worried that a book with tables and lists of players and stats wouldn't work well on the Kindle.Unfortunately, the sample you get doesn't show any tables or lists - just text from the first chapter(s).

Well, I was right to be worried.

On the Kindle you can't zoom enough to make the lists of players and stats readable. They remain microscopic in size.I could make out player names, but not any of the stats or projections.I give it 2 stars instead of 1 because the preceding chapters are excellent.

Customer Service allowed me to return the "book" with absolutely no hassle.

I think Rob Higgins is great writer and a great hockey guy so I will be buying the DTB version. Don't bother on the Kindle.Perhaps if you have a Kindle DX or are using the Kindle App for the iPad... ... Read more

Product Description
Blue Ice relates the tale of the University of Michigan's hockey program--from its fight to become a varsity sport in the 1920s to its 1996 and 1998 NCAA national championships.
This history of the hockey program profiles the personalities who shaped the program--athletic directors, coaches, and players. From Fielding Yost, who made the decision to build the team a rink with artificial ice before the Depression (which ensured hockey would be played during those lean years), to coaches Joseph Barss, who survived World War I and the ghastly Halifax explosion before becoming the program's first coach, to Red Berenson, who struggled to return his alma mater's hockey team to prominence in the 1980s and 1990s. Players from Eddie Kahn, who scored Michigan's first goal in 1923, to Brendan Morrison, who upon winning the 1996 national championship with his goal said, "This is for all the [Michigan] guys who never had a chance to win it."
BlueIce also explores the players' exotic backgrounds, from Calumet in the Upper Peninsula to Minnesota's Iron Range to Regina, Saskatchewan; how coach Vic Heygliger launched the NCAA tournament at the glamorous Broadmoor Hotel; and how commissioner Bill Beagan transformed the country's premier hockey conference.
In Blue Ice, fans of hockey will learn the stories behind the curse of the Boston University Terriers, the hockey team's use of the winged helmet, and the unlikely success of Ann Arbor's home-grown talent.
Unlike other sports at the collegiate level, the hockey players at Michigan haven't been motivated by fame or fortune; rather, they came to Michigan get an education and to play the game they loved.
John U. Bacon has won numerous national writing awards and now freelances for Sports Illustrated, Time, ESPN Magazine, and the New York Times, among others.

5-0 out of 5 stars About more than just the game...
An easy read, that's about much more then just the game of hockey. This book delves into the tradition and character of Michigan and it's hockey program.Blue Ice is a must read for anyone interested in Michigan athletics, is familiar with the Ann Arbor hockey community, or just loves the game of hockey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable
Blue ice is an impressive book that will be enjoyed by anyone interested in collegiate-level athletics, particularly ice hockey. Bacon is a gifted writer with the ability to interweave historical facts and objective (always informative and often funny) stories that keep the reader entertained. It is a great buy for folks that love factually based stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reading
A must-read for hockey lovers! Whether you like Michigan Hockey or any other team, this book is for you. Bacon makes this history story of the Wolverine skaters extremely fun and joyous reading. If you are a Michigan fan, you'd enjoy reading all the details and stories; if you (so wrongly) chose another team to cheer -- you'll become curious as to its own history.
I especially loved the parts of the book (which I consider as "Hockey chanting for Idiots") detailing the rich content and background behind some of what you hear in Yost Ice arena. After reading it, watching the games was so much more fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars Connections on Ice
The idea is simple.Write an engaging story recounting the coming of age of a first class collegiate hockey program and spice it with behind the scene details, locker room interviews and humorous anecdotes. The execution is outstanding.Blue Ice takes the reader on a very enjoyable trip looking at the beginnings of college hockey at the University of Michigan, from playing outdoors on the frozen Huron River, to the recent trips that Wolverine skaters have made to the Frozen Four championships. The bonus for readers is getting a sports version of "Connections," with the athletic stories enveloped and intertwined in the history of the time, showing how seemingly unrelated events can influence each other. Easy and entertaining to read, delightful to give as a gift, when it was over, we wanteda sequel.

5-0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC
This is a very informative and insightful look into the rich tradition of Michigan Hockey. The writing is tremendous with great personal interviews with former players and coaches and other people well connected to the program. I loved the off-the-ice stories the most. It is not abook about statistics and generic history. Bacon digs deep into the people involved in the program and relays their stories in a way that makes you feel like you are part of it. You get right inside the locker room, classroom and team parties as well. It is a very easy read and always keeps you entertained. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good stuff
This book Hockey Tough I bought for my son who is playing competitive AAA Midget hockey. My older son read the book and thought it was great. He really likes the suggestions on hockey as a mental game.It gives advice on how to work through situations that you might be dealing with in the game of hockey.Good book for the hockey player!

3-0 out of 5 stars Hockey Tough
good book, but save yourself the cost of expedited shipping.I chose this option from a used book seller, but it still took a long time for the book to arrive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the underestimated "mental" game
O.K., so everybody says sports (at a certain level) are 90% mental and 10% skill. It's so common it's a cliche.So...why doesn't anybody take getting mentally prepared for the game seriously?Good question. And that's the one Saul Miller tries to tackle in this book.

I'll admit, I was a little skeptical at first.I though "probably a little too touchy feely."But I gave the book a chance, and I'm glad I did.Miller lays out in plain language how simple mental preparation can really affect your gameplay. The funny thing is, after reading it, it just seems like common sense that you should prepare mentally.Everyone always complains about players who "just didn't show up today" or "have their heads in the clouds."These techniques offer simple ways to stay focused, in the game, and able to execute when needed.

These techniques are similar to any endeavor that requires lots of skill and precise execution.Military service, aviation, etc. are examples of professions where having the mental toughness to persevere and succeed are prerequisites for success.Miller translates these same techniques into the hockey vernacular.

The book covers pre-game preparation and visualization, handling of positive and negative emotions inherent in the game, and techniques for forwards, D and Goalies to use to keep them focused on the game at hand, not the shot they missed 2 shifts ago.It is an easy read, efficiently laid out and well written. The advice given is practical and easily put into use in your next game.I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I bought this for my teenage son.The book focuses on keeping a positive state of mind, keeping your spirits up and expecting the best. It's a great message for life in general, not just hockey. My son says it really helped his game, and helps him deal with things when they don't always go his way.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hockey Tough is a Great Book!
I've played ice hockey on and off my whole life, but it seemed like my game had hit a wall. I did not feel like I was improving any longer. Instead I felt I was doomed to be an average player forever. About 6 months ago I discovered Hockey Tough and it has changed the way I look at my game. Furthermore my game has improved because my confidence has improved. Now all of my teammates want to borrow it. If you buy this book do us all a favor and keep it a secret. ... Read more

Product Description
Ice Warriors tells the story of the Western Hockey League (known as the Pacific Coast Hockey League before 1952), a determined, ambitious league that at its height aspired to establish itself as a second major league, a western counterpart to the eastern NHL. Between 1948 and 1974, more than 2,500 minor-league professional hockey players skated for the 23 teams that made up the Western Hockey League. A small percentage of these players went on to enjoy substantial careers in the National Hockey League; others were former NHLers who chose to end their pro careers in the minors. Most of them, however, were minor-league lifers who played many seasons in the WHL and other minor pro leagues. Ice Warriors traces the leagues origins, rise and fall. The author analyzes off-ice influences on the WHLs development and portrays the on-ice highlights of each season, including interviews with players, coaches and fans, and statistical records and pictures from the era. The leagues aspirations ended with the expansion of the NHL, and after the 197374 season the WHL ceased operations. In its 26-year-run, however, it provided winter sports entertainment for countless appreciative hockey fans west of the Mississippi. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Broad Coverage of the PCHL/WHL
Mr. Stott did his homework before writing this book. As his bibliography indicates, he researched numerous articles and either quoted or conducted many interviews with players, coaches, journalists and fans who were part of the old Pacific Coast Hockey League (PCHL) and the Western Hockey League(WHL). This book should satisfy the interests of anyone in western North America who is into hockey. There are a lot of interesting stories, facts and statistics about these two leagues. Mr. Stott also uses an active writing style that keeps the book moving along, which kept me interested in flipping the pages. In October 1969, my dad took me watch the Salt Lake Golden Eagles host the San Diego Gulls in the then brand-new Salt Palace Arena in downtown Salt Lake.At 11 years old, I immediately fell in love with ice hockey and still love it 40 years later. It was the Golden Eagles and thier foes in the old Western Hockey League that ignited my passion for hockey.

The Golden Eagles, the Gulls, the Salt Palace and the WHL are all history today. But Jon Stott's book, Ice Warriors, which chronicles the birth of the PCHL and eventual death of the old WHL is a gem for bringing back memories to people like me, but also for clearly illustrating the gradual growth and changes to professional hockey in the western U.S. and Canada between the late 1940's and early 1970's.

Many familiar personalities are detailed in this book: Art Jones, Guyle Fielder, Phil Maloney, Hal Laycoe, Sandy Hucul, Bob Barlow, Len Haley, Billy McNeill, Don Head, Connie Madigan; plus the WHL teams: Portland Buckaroos, Vancouver Canucks, Seattle Totems, Edmonton Flyers, Calgary Stampeders, San Francisco Seals, Phoenix Roadrunners, and Los Angeles Blades just to name a few.

Ice Warriors is a great trip down memory lane, but Ice Warriors is also a very detailed study of how the expansion of the NHL and emergence of the WHA impacted the WHL. Reading this book will provide the reader a better understanding of the inner workings of a professional minor hockey circuit back in the day and how difficult is was (and still is) to keep a franchise afloat in the competitive world of pro sports.

Ice Warriors is real tribute to the players, owners, coaches, and teams from a bygone, but not forgotten era in professional hockey. ... Read more

The book met my expectations. It provides team drills for all aspects of the game. It's a great value; I recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book; great illustrations; great help
Hockey Drill Book. The title says it all.The book is laid out very well.It opens with warm up and skating drills. Then the book moves to stick handling to passing to shooting. It continues with conditioning, goaltending, checking, situations and finishes with practice.

The nice part about the book is that each drill has an illustration with a description of how to perform it.Each drill also contains an explanation of the purpose, tempo and who can participate.Another nice feature is the variations section, which offers an idea of a different approach to the drill.

This is a great book for beginning coaches as well as more seasoned coaches looking for something different. This book will help your confidence as a coach and help your team move to the next level. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Hockey was more than a sport
Bruce Valley's style of writing brings you back to the days when life was simpler and hockey was more than a sport, it was a way of life. The "Confessions of an Old Hockey Goalie" are spoken with true emotions and genuine feelings. You can almost feel the bitter cold wind biting at your face as Bruce describes the action. He speaks of the passion and the drive that not only serves us well in sports but serve us well in life. I found the book to be well worth the read not only for the history of hockey in southern New Hampshire and but for the chance to go back in time and look at myself and remember all of those games of street hockey that I loved. Bruce's story is one that is repeated over and over, town after town. It may be told by different people and even revolve around a different sport but its underlying message is that the human spirit will live on!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for those who love hockey
SEAHAWK is a love story. It's about the love of hockey in its purest form: pond hockey, or "shinny" as it was called in Rye, New Hampshire in the 1940s, played outdoors on the most elemental of surfaces: "black ice".It's about how a group of World War II veterans who loved the game gave a small town a sense of pride and identity, starting a hockey team from scratch and turning it into a powerhouse that made it all the way to the Class B championships in Boston Garden. Finally, it's about one man's life-long passion for the game from his days as a fourteen-year-old goalie with the Seahawks to his debate about when it's time to hang up the pads.

Although author Bruce Valley is a former test pilot and an aerospace executive, he's also a poet and it shows in this memoir. He writes with profound emotion and insight about the hockey-playing war veterans he hero-worshipped when he was young, and admired even more when he grew up to understand the sacrifices they had made.He paints the depth of devotion required to keep a team going when Mother Nature repeatedly threw her worst at their home-made outdoor "pond".He vividly describes the wide-eyed fascination he felt when he saw his first game of "shinny" at age three and how that excitement has never left him.I often found myself reading with tears in my eyes, not an experience one usually associates with a book on the intense, hard-charging sport of hockey.

Perhaps the author's most poetic passages deal with the ice itself, and how "great expanses of natural black ice have an unfathomable allure for hockey players.Black ice presents at once an object of beauty, a territory to be explored, and a means of vigorous exercise. It is available only seasonally in certain places. For those who choose to live in a cold region, black ice symbolizes where we live and who we are."The descriptions of the players' struggle to maintain a playable ice surface for their scheduled games is one of almost superhuman devotion and effort. Before they went to work, the team members would shovel snow off the pond, scrape the ice and flood it with water, hoping the day would be cold enough to freeze it into a smooth, glassy finish. After work, they often had to shovel more snow before they could begin the game.Following every hard-fought game, those same men scraped the ice and flooded it again.(The Zamboni had yet to be invented.)This cycle continued throughout the hockey season.

SEAHAWK includes some intriguing moments of hockey history, such as the game played against the Berlin Maroons, "a legendary team of fiery, long-haired, non-English-speaking French Canadians."The teen-aged Mr. Valley is in goal warming up when one of his defensemen asks, "Ever seen a slap shot?"The young goalie says no so the defenseman suggests he skate over to the other end of the rink where "two or three of the Maroon forwards were striking at the puck with a high and violent, golflike swing. The shots looked like bullets, some passing right through the chicken-wire barricade behind the goal....It suddenly seemed probable that my life would end sometime that night."Fortunately, the new shooting concept was still highly inaccurate, and none of the slap shots came anywhere near the goal so Mr. Valley lived to play another game.

Vintage photographs and newspaper clippings describing the Seahawks' games add visual and historical interest to the book. The description of old-fashioned hockey equipment is enough to make a modern-day hockey mom envy the price tag but cringe at the lack of protection it offered.(Helmets? Facemasks? No one even considered wearing them.)

The heart of SEAHAWK, however, is Mr. Valley's passion for the game.He traces it from those early days of skating around the periphery of the "rink" on double-bladed skates to returning to Rye for games with the "Rye Remnant", the former Seahawks and sons of Seahawks who cannot resist the lure of natural black ice.He journeys back to his hometown and stops by Eel Pond."There they were, far off in the southwest corner of the great pond, where the ice was perhaps smoothest or the treed shoreline offered some protection from the wind.A group of bright hockey jerseys, predominantly red or blue, moved back and forth, cutting, weaving, and waving sticks for passes. No sound traversed the distance. The scene was silent. The day brightened.Hockey lived on in Rye."

When Mr. Valley presents a speech to the hockey team at his alma mater, the Naval Academy, he's asked why he continues to pit himself against players one-third his age. He answers simply, "Because I can."The truth is that he plays because he can't bear to give up something at once so pure, so elemental, so comradely.

For those who love hockey, this book is a must-read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Old-time hockey at its best
Like hockey? Interested in local sports history? Any yes to either of those, and I'd recommend Bruce Valley's new book, "Seahawk: Confessions of a Hockey Goalie."

Valley picks words like a painter picks colors: he selects each one carefully and, often times, perfectly. His writing is full of enlightening realizations that apply to everyone, not just sports fans or hockey aficionados. Still, the book is meant for hockey fans, and fans of the game in its simplest form - on the pond.

The book is a quick read, at fewer than 100 pages, and it appreciates the historical aspects of life, the game of hockey and the New England area. Valley's narrative voice brings the reader on the ice, behind his goalie mask, fitting the cover of the book well. His description and imagery are luxuries for those obsessed with hockey and all of its beautiful nuances.

There are incredible photographs of hockey players in the 1950s placed at the opening of each chapter and after the text, there are lots of old newspaper clippings about Valley's team, the Rye Seahawks.

The Seahawks weren't a professional team; they were a beloved group of local veterans coming back from World War II who served as the main source of entertainment for adults and children alike. Valley played goalie for two years with the team, starting when he was only 14, but followed them throughout his childhood.

Valley talks about hockey towns and how Rye fit into that idea decades ago. He addresses his love for the game and how he feels about it now. One particular chapter that stuck with me was about his decision to hang up the pads and move on. It really resonates with any hockey player who loved the game as a teenager but stopped playing once the competition grew to unattainable levels.

The book is for old-time hockey; it's for history and war veterans. Valley's words are a tribute to New Hampshire hockey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Back to a time when hockey (and many other things) were much more basic
Hockey wasn't always the high-tech, indoor game that you see on TV today. It used to be contested on outdoor ponds, games at the mercy of weather conditions, cars surrounding the rink to provide illumination for night games.Bruce Valley learned the game under those conditions in the 50's with the Rye Seahawks playing goalie at the tender age of 14.He recounts those memories in his book Seahawk: Confessions of an Old Goalie. For anyone with a love of hockey and a sense of history, this is a great introspective read that takes you back to a simpler time in our collective history.

Valley grew up in Rye in the 40's, a small town on the east coast, struggling to survive in the post WWII era.One day as a youngster, he looked out the window of his house and saw something he had never seen before...a bunch of men skating on ice with sticks, batting around a little rubber disk. His father explained the game of hockey to him, and his life was never the same.Without much else to do in a cold New England winter, Valley took up the game with a passion. This adhoc game turned into an official team in an actual league, and the Rye Seahawks became a dominant force in the area.Valley ended up joining the team at the age of 14 for a two year stint towards the end of the team's existence. While the outdoor version of the game was drawing to a close, Valley continued to make hockey a critical part of his life and passion.Thru his eyes, you see a side of the game lost to today's youth, and a piece of history that was played out every winter in small towns all over the Northeast part of the country.

I really liked this book.Valley writes with a clarity that puts you right on the ice, temperatures close to zero, picking up the shovel to clear the ice for the next day's games. He supplements his stories with scans of actual news clippings that reported the game results, treating the team and the games as high-profile sports entertainment. All in all, it's an introspective look into what the game of hockey means to someone, coupled with a step back into nostalgia.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fun read for Seacoast hockey fans...
Author Bruce Valley, in this labor of love, does a terrific job of describing both his time with the Rye Seahawks and subsequent years playing goalie.Valley has an obvious love of the game, and does a nice job of describing how the inevitable aging process affects us all.As a 42 year old used-to-be basketball player, I know full well the feeling of not being able to do physically what the mind wishes.

Thanks to author Valley. This one is recommended for all hockey fans as well as those interested in New Hampshire history.Enjoy! ... Read more

I give Wingman On Ice five stars because it was really interesting and really good. Wingman On Ice is my favorite book because I love hockey and Matt Christopher is my favorite sports author. This book is about a kid named Tod and Tod loves hockey, and his mom and dad buy him a hockey stick. Then when Tod tried his hockey stick he did really bad. So Tod put his brand new hockey stick in his closet and did not play with it until he thought he deserved it.Then the last game he made a really good pass then the guy who passed it to scored to win the championshipgame. Then Tod thought he deserved his hockey stick after that game.If you like hockey I think you should read this book.-Dr.Pepper

If you like hockey or are from Canada, Northern U.S., or Northern Europe, you would enjoy this book. Tod is the Average Joe. I think this is a good book for 7-11 year olds. Matt Christopher is a good author for sports books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wingman on Ice
For our book reivew I read the book "Wingman On Ice," by Matt Christoper. It's about a boy named Todd Baker who gets a brand new hockey stick for christmas.Todd doesn't think he deserves the stick because of the way he had been playing,so he puts it in his closet. He practices for along time, but still does not think he deserves the stick. This story takesplace in present time. It was the last day of the season at Mana rink,Todd's game had really improved, now he finally thinks he deserves thestick, but does not have it with him. If you want to know what happensnext, you will have to read the exciting book, "Wingaman On Ice."If I had to rate this book from a scale of one to ten, I would give thisbook an eleven it is so good!

5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT HOCKEY BOOK
Gordie a Hockey Legend is book is a great book for anyone who knows about hockey and what the sport is and how it has evolved for its early stages with the popular players like Gordie Howe, He really set the bar in hockey back in his days. He held the NHL scoring title with the most goals in his career with 801 goals until "The Great One", Wayne Gretzky passed him in April of 1993.Gordie is really a Hockey legend.

Gordie is really a legend. He was Known for his ability to be tough anytime during a game, and get the goals, and stand up for his team at anytime needed. This Book was really good in my view. It described his great career, and his life leading up to and being in the NHL.

I would recommend this book to a lot of my friends, especially to my friends that like, and or play hockey. This book really shows the meaning for, and how hockey started to become more popular especially in the United States and in Canada. I really liked this book, and it is one of my favorites, and I would recommend it to anyone. This is truly a great book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gordie Howe
Gordie Howe: A hockey legend tells about his whole life. From when he was little kid, to when he made it in the NHL. It tells about how he first came upon hockey as a little kid. It tells about his carrer and the NHL. I thought that this book was ok. Not horrible but not excellent. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about gordie howe, or wants to read about him.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book on Gordie Howe!
This book tells about Gordie Howe, one of the best hockey players ever, and his career in the NHL.In the beginning, it tells about his first couple of seasons, and then tells more about his great career and facts about himtoward the end. I learned a lot about him from this book, for example, Ilearned that he has played for two teams, the Hartford Whalers and theDetroit Red Wings, and that he was considered one of the greatest playersof his time.

4-0 out of 5 stars An enthralling look at professional hockey's past, and stars
As a lifetime fan of the Detroit Red Wings, I was overjoyed when I found that there is a recent biography of Howe that is much more up to date than many written in the 60's and 70's.This book gives the reader an insidelook at what it was like to get into the NHL in the 50's, and what it tookto stay there and become a star.Mackskimming is very candid when talkingabout the front office's team management "politics"The readeralso gets an up-close look at other great stars of the era such as RedKelly, Ted Linsay, Maurice "Rocket" Richard, and coach JackAdams.A must read for any TRUE hockey fan.

3-0 out of 5 stars Starts out great, but ends up only a good book on Howe.
The book starts out covering Howe in excellent detail. Several pages coverhis first seasons. Then as if the author lost interest, the decades goflying by.My reasons for reading the book was to find out, why Howe wasconsidered great, how Howe compared to Richard, how the game changed overthe years and what it was about Howe that enabled him to play for so long. The book only addressed how Howe established his early greatness. ... From its earliest days on frozen ponds, hockey has been a sport of speed and elegance, but also one demanding courage and physical will. The Hockey Book goes deep into the heart of the game, celebrating with astounding photographs and insightful words the great players and the inspiring teams, as well as an ethos-robust and selfless-that defines the sport as much in its dynamic present as it did in hockey's hardscrabble (and helmetless) past.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's a great conversation piece
because people who know me or thought they did, do a double take of this book that's found a home on my coffee table.
"Hockey..?!"they say.
Yeah, hockey.
It opens up a new dialogue for my guest. Just flip through the pages and the history, record breakers, photos and personalities, giving the game another dimension for those who are often the ones at home, wondering what it's like to be in the stands, hearing the puck glide across the ice, feeling the cold atmosphere surround them or see the body slams in mid-air, leaving one speechless and in awe.
The photos, of course, are lovely with the stories universal, dialogue simple, keeping my interest, often reminding me why I want to read it. The chronological set-up provides a good reference without confusing or distracting me from my attention, with bits of trivia sprinkled throughout, placing a face on the game. S.I. knows how to have a sense of humor in good taste. Makes a great gift for those who love and appreciate the game.

P.S. Congradulations, Jordin Tootoo! You made S.I!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sports Illustrated The Hockey Book
This was a gift for my 13 years old cousin that plays hockey, he is very happy with this book, and it makes a great gift for those that like sports.

2-0 out of 5 stars No Mo?
The only mention of Mike Modano is his picture on the back with 19 other skaters, and the listing of names in the back inside flap has him in the wrong order. Sorry, but someone in SI has a problem with him.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a Must Book for Hockey Fans
Sports Illustrated has put together the definitive book about the sport of ice hockey, drawing on its article archives and its photo library. This is a marvelous book, with huge, gorgeous color photographs. If you are a hockey fan, this tome is a valuable edition to your library. It also makes a great gift.

The book is best when it draws on its vintage files of the hockey greats. The best of the book, in this fan's opinion, are the stories and photos that covered the golden age of the NHL, immediately after World War II, when the NHL consisted of only six teams.

The minuscule number of teams (Montreal Canadians, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Black Hawks and the New York Rangers) meant that only the cream of the crop in hockey made the big leagues. All the big boys are here:Maurice (the Rocket) Richard, Jean Beliveau, Gordie Howe, Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita and the Esposito brothers;also the acrobatic goalies of that era, including Jacques Plante, Terry Sawchuk and Glen Hall.

Those were the days when the goalies didn't wear facemasks. The book includes a spectacular photo of Jacques Plant that appeared on the SI cover of Feb. 17, 1958 (unlike the cover photo in the magazine, the photo in the book is uncropped). The photo shows Plante peering out of his goal with his chin almost on the ice as he prepares for an assault by the New York Rangers. The tense-ness of the moment not only shows on Plante's face, but also on the faces of the fans in the stands behind the Montreal goal.

The book also includes the hilarious story written by George Plimpton when he played 15 minutes of an exhibition game in the Boston Bruins goal. Plimpton later published a book on that experience, but the original magazine article reprinted here will leave anyone squirming with laughter as the Big Bad Bruins set up the hapless writer - who played in the goal by while skating on his ankles.

One of the highlights is the famous photograph of Bobby Orr, stretched out horizontally three feet off the ice after scoring the wining goal in the 1970 championship game that gave the Bruins their first NHL Stanley Cup in 29 years (disclosure: the writer covered that game for UPI and interviewed Orr in the locker room after the game.Earlier this year, I ran into Orr and he signed a copy of the photo with the inscription, "Thanks for covering this game").The account of how the photographer shot thatamazing photo is also included.

Of course, the story of the 1980 Olympic Gold Medal won by the Americans is here, but for once the SI editors missed a chance to tell the complete story of American Olympic hockey:in the 50's, 60's 70's and 80's Olympic hockey was played by amateurs, no pros, and it was hockey at his finest.Dave Christian was on the 1980 team - and he was the son of Billy Christian and the nephew of Roger Christian who were two of the stars of the 1960 team that also won the gold medal in a fairy tale manner. And, of course, Herb Brooks the coach of the 1980 team was the last player cut from the 1960 team (further disclosure:the writer played on the 1965 U.S. National Team that included both Billy and Roger Christian, as well as Brooks).

There is also the touching story of Travis Roy, the young hockey star from Maine, who was permanently paralyzed in the opening seconds of his first game for Boston University in 1995.

If there is a weakness to the book it is the lack of documentation on the earliest days of hockey in Canada. Howie Morenz and the great goaltender Georges Vezina are mentioned, of course, but the focus of the SI book is on modern day hockey. This hockey fan wished there were more of those grainy photographs of the earliest players wearing their skimpy uniforms. There is too much lore from that era that is missing in this otherwise excellent book.

The book also seems a bit disjointed. When we do get photos from the earliest days, they are interspersed with photos of modern-day hockey. It can be confusing.

But overall, this is a fabulous book that documents the wonderful sport of ice hockey - the national sport of Canada, and a sport that has spread throughout the United States and Europe and more recently in Asia.If you love hockey, you're going to love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely, positively, the best hockey coaching book on the market today.
I bought this book when it first came out in 2003 and it is still, by far, the best hockey coaching resource on the market. Even today, whether coaching or writing, when I'm looking for coaching information, Red Gendron's book is still the first one I pull off the shelf to look for answers.

The book is well thought out and well written. While it does contain a fair amount of skills and drills, it is not a skills and drills manual. This book is geared towards those bantam, midget, or high school coach's who are looking to gain deeper understanding and knowledge of systems and tactics as well as the concepts, processes and nomenclature of ice hockey.

USA Hockey Inc. thought so much of this book that they slapped a new cover on it and began using it as their Level-IV coaches manual.

I've been coaching hockey for over a quarter century as well as write a syndicated hockey column called "Hockey from the Neck up" and of all the coaching books I've read over the years the only book that has had more of an influence on my coaching development has been Mike Krzyzewski's "Leading with the Heart" - and that's a basketball book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best hockey book for coaches
This book by far is the most comprehensive for hockey coaches I have found anywhere. You can read it over and over again and get something new from it every time. It may be too much for the beginner coach but there is something in this book for everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on coaching hockey that I have seen.
If you are serious about helping kids learn, this book will help you.

This is an fantastic book for someone that has an understanding of hockey.Maybe not so helpful to someone just starting.

Most of the books that I have seen either talk in circles or just draw diagrams. This book is thorough, easy to read and very instructive.

If you are looking to understand the game or systems you are not familiar with, this book will help you.If you are looking for a FEW really good drills, this book will help you.If your team is not quite grasping what you are teaching, this book will help you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Hockey Coaching Book Out There!
This is geared for Bantams, Midgets, and High School. But has tons of info and great detail.I basically took the info that applied to my team and made it out team manual.
Systems, drills, coaching advice, how to present, how to motivate, etc... its all in there.

Bottom line, it's a great book.If you're a hockey coach for these levels you need this. Its that good

Keep in mind as a coach you have to know your team and what applies to your team. You cant read this book and expect everything to work.Like most coaching book you have to use the info that applies.Be open, be creative.Don't be a coach who lives inside a book to give him/her the Xs and Os.This is a guide....a great guide. But you have to understand your team first for this to work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dynamite Book for Coaching Midgets
Coaching Hockey Successfully has a loads of valuable information from hockey philosophy (teach your players to create space and time and teach them the concept of support) to good drills to teach your players hockey sense. This book would get five stars but sometimes Gendron loses you e.g. a description of a drill to which he does not have a diagram and one you do not understand. I thought it was my problem until I talked it over with a friend. This book is so valuable. If you are coaching Bantam and above, it's a top notch resource. Thanks, Red! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing book about an amzing team.
This book is wonderful! It gives all young athletes, like mysefl, hope for the future.Plus, this is a team that deserved to have their story told, and Mary Turco did a wonderful job at telling it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Crashing the Net, my all-time favorite
Crashing the net is my all-time favorite book. This is a well written book that makes you feel that your really there standing beside K.L. or Cammi. It shows you the glory of being an Olympian and one day I want to try to play womens hockey in the Olympics. This book is one of the things that persuaded me! This book shows that anything is possible when you believe in yourself.

3-0 out of 5 stars She Shoots.....She Scores!
Mary Turco captures the excitement that surrounded the first U.S. Women's Olympic Ice Hockey Team.Unfortunately, the text wasn't quite as excited.Although the stories were interesting, they were dryly written. It washard to get behind these remarkable athletes as there just didn't seem tobe enough character developement. These wonderful gold-medal winners allhad to fight the prejudices against women's sports to follow their dreamsand serve as inspiration, but this aspect was barely touched upon.Thespirit of the 1998 U.S. Women's Hockey Team and their amazing journey wasnicely remembered and portrayed, but you will not find much of anythingelse. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This book covers things that the others don't!!
This book was extremely helpful to me. Not only does it cover thecomplicated stuff such as backwards crossovers but also the things no oneelse talks about. Things like getting up after you fall down! Another plusis the pictures. Everything from proper stopping techniques to the best wayto put on all your gear step by step. This book is a must if you'rethinking about playing ice hockey!

5-0 out of 5 stars Now there's REALLY no excuse for women not to play hockey.
I've never seen hockey skills and strategy described as clearly as Aaron Foeste has in this book (without any oversimplifying or patronizing!). (Bruce Curtis' excellent photos don't hurt, either.) Skate, don't walk! ... Read more
