Product Description

Center Ice. The star's place. Only it wasn't a skating star Berrien found early one morning at N'ice Skates Ice Arena. A stranger was curled up in that coveted spot, not moving, dead. Neither Berrien nor Etienne, the live-in arena manager, had the faintest idea of the man's identity.

As the police began their grisly investigation more troubles surfaced when it became obvious that one of the arena’s champions was missing. She was reported kidnapped, adding FBI agents to the Law Enforcement mix. A decidedly upset coach from the Midwest arrived in the California’s town to take back "his" pair team — one of whom is the missing girl.

Parents, skaters and coaches are all in an uproar, lessons cancelled, rehearsals for the up-coming show running overtime — in short, confusion reigned. First local, then national media frenzy carried the unfolding drama to the nation.

The ending is truly a "Grand Finale." ... Read more

This mystery is a lot of fun for anyone interested in the world behind thescenes of amateur ice skating. Finding a dead body on the ice wasn't agreat way for Berrien Gamble to start her day, and further complicates heralready crunched schedule preparing for the first ice show at her rink,N'ice Skates. Unique characters and beautiful scenery round out this debutnovel. It has great insight on the early stages of a skater's trek to thechampionships we enjoy on television. The plot is slippery as ice with abang-up last chapter. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars least favorite by this author
Great book from a great series by a great author. She writes in a clear style that draws you in with intriguing story lines and appealing characters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
Along with "Dancing Shoes" and "Ballet Shoes", this is one of my three favorite "Shoes" books.

I loved the little girls.Lalla, the highly privileged daughter of two figure skating champions, whose aunt is so determined that Lalla, too, will be a champion that she sent the poor girl to daily lessons at the age of three, is valued only for her skating ability. She is not allowed to have a personality outside skating.Through her friendship with Harriet, she begins to learn about the world outside of competition.Harriet, for her part, has been largely overshadowed by her family, and skating gives her a chance to develop a passion and a talent of her own.

It's a sweet story.I loved it when I was little.

5-0 out of 5 stars Also known as "White Boots"
The original title of this book is "White Boots" and it's about two little girls, Lalla and Harriet. Lalla has been trained all her life to be a skating champion, and has been told so many times that it's her destiny, she can't imagine being anything else. Harriet took up skating toimprove her legs after a long illness, but discovers how much she trulyloves the sport, and that she has a talent for it. Harriet is allowed toshare Lalla's classes, and to be her companion, because Lalla's pushy AuntClaudia thinks it will help Lalla to become a champion. Through the girls'friendship, Lalla's perspective of the world changes, & she finds thatthere is more to life than skating. There is quite a surprising andsatisfying ending to the story. I've read this book many times, and I loveit. Noel Streatfield writes in an intelligent and engrossing manner, andher books are a pleasure to read for both young people and adults.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book!
Noel Streatfield is an enchanting author, and I love all of her books, but this one is my absolute favorite, probably because I love skating. Her books are excellently written, and if you are looking for copies, I orderall of mine off of Amazon UK.She is a British author, so a lot of herbooks are still in print in England, which is where I bought this one witha different title, it was called White Boots there.Well, this is a veryvery good book and I highly reccomend it.

Product Description
"A poignant, revealing look at a life we might have imagined differently. . . . Her story will give inspiration to anyone striving toward a seemingly impossible dream."
--Booklist

"America's Sweetheart" Dorothy Hamill grew up on the ice, working toward the dream she was to accomplish by age nineteen: winning Olympic gold in figure skating. But life was not the picture of perfection it appeared to be. Dorothy faced a painful inner struggle with depression that followed her from the time she was a young girl into adulthood. Months away from home to train and compete took a toll, yet little reprieve could be found in the tumultuous and fragile relationship she had with her parents.

Dorothy went on to marry the man of her dreams, only to have the partnership end in heartache and a tragedy that almost pushed her to the breaking point. When a second failed marriage tried and tested Dorothy yet again, she found a remarkable strength in what she did have--her greatest love, daughter Alexandra.

In this deeply moving and honest memoir, Dorothy opens up for the first time about love, family, courage, and what it means to truly win--both on and off the ice.

3-0 out of 5 stars Skating Around the Description
The price of this book was phenominal, and it also arrived in a timely manner. However, the description of the condition of the book did not match what we received. The description said "some edge wear".There was no edgewear, but there were some other things that should have been included in the description. There was a big crease, writing inside, a grease stain, presumably from a food spill, and a black marker mark on the side of the book.Again, the price was awesome, but regardless, the condition of the book did not match what we received.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great-amazing book!
Like Dorothy, I feel that figure skating has given me a place in life. I completely understand the joy and freedom that being on the ice gives, there is not anything comparable to it!Hearing of her life, struggles and joys, make me appreciate her even that much more as a skater and as a person!I could hardly put this book down!I highly recommend this book to anyone- a tender story of a very talented and beautiful person. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A STUNNING BOOK
As one of the critics says; this i s indeed a pageturner... However, there are numerous faults facts in this book. Among them includes that the film IT`S A PLEASURE was a Fox film. Wrong, it was produced by International and released by RKO. Several critical comments on her films are stolen from among others Leslie Halliwell, a notable filmcritic and the ONLY bible for moviebuffs until internet movie database came along. Stories of Sonja and Tyrone are also way over the top; the talk they had in the dressingroom - how did Leif Henie and Raymond Strait get hold of t h a t? Leif was still in Norway at the time. However. There are several items that distinguish this biography; the stories by Sonja`s secretary Dorothy Stevens in particular... It is true that in creating the ice-skating star Sonja Henie, her father created a monster. But in the long run Sonja suffered from it. She was never taught to be a normal person. And indeed: She gave Norway a place in the sun and donated with her third husband Niels Onstad the Henie-Onstad ArtGallery near Oslo. U should visit it if u came to Norway. All of Sonja`s medals and trophies are in a well-guarded room and photos etc from her films are displayed in a huge basement. It must never be forgotten that she gave our nation a great deal - indeed giving the community of Bærum a home for retired people. U WILL see this reading this book that she was a trouper - a woman who was taught to fight and be competetive. And everything she tried her hands on - became lucrative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hell on Ice
I know and have known quite a people who worked with Sonja or were as close a friend as she would permit and this book seems to confirm all thatI've heard over the last 40 years. I met Sonja in 1963 in Pittsburgh at theopening of the Pittsburgh Arena.Despite all her shortcomings as a person, there was something about her that fascinates me as a skater and as aperson.Anyone interested in skating should read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Facinating book!

Product Description
"Nice Skates," an ice arena on the very edge of the Pacific Ocean, was holding the Pacific Coast Championships in December, 1994. It was the qualifying competition for the 1995 Nationals. Many great skaters were in attendance, as well as some very important judges. One was from the Nice Skates' home town of Portugal, California, Judge Melissa Elizabeth Nottingham.

Then, just minutes before the start of the final round of judging for the Senior Ladies competition, Judge Nottingham is found dead in the pros' room sitting by the fireplace in a Queen Anne chair.

It's the last night of competition with a rink jam-packed with 5,000 spectators, parents, coaches and competitors (many of whom did not like Melissa Elizabeth). The final event is ready to start, and Berrien has a murdered "Judge" on her hands.

Berrien is a skating coach as well as the co-owner of the ice arena. She found the body—the second at the rink in less than two years—and becomes involved, once again, with the county sheriff deputies including tall, handsome and short-tempered Sean Mather.

Skating episodes and an intriguing murder investigation crown this new addition to the Nice Skates Ice Skating Mystery Series. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An ice skating judge gets murdered.
"Judge Me Nottingham" is the story of an international ice-skating judge who was found murdered in the pro's room just prior to the start of the last qualifying event for the 1995 U.S. Nationals. And based on what the TV public has seen in the "Competitors Scores" over the years, my opinion is that one could easily deduce that many of the skaters might dream of such an event. And the "Scoring" at the last Olympics adds more to the book's intrigue.

This book nicely follows Book 1, "Nice Shows" and continues with the adventures of Berrien Gamble, ice skating coach, ice show producer and co-owner of the "Nice Skates Ice Arena." Again, Berrien and her faithful dog "Kristi" are heavily involved in another murder investigation. I'm not surprised because of Berrien's investigative nature.

This book is a great follow-up to "Nice Shows." Please note: this reviewer believes that the series title change is appropriate, as "Nice Skates Ice Arena" is the place where the "Murders" occur and Berrien is again the adventurous amateur sleuth.

I recommend this book very highly. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Nicely Illustrated But Not All That Well-Edited Book
Well, I know that, as a formerly HUGE ice skating fan, you have to have every book or movie that has ice skating even mentioned. And what better than to get a big, sleek illustrated book packed with glossy photos of all your favorite glamorous skating stars, right? Not-so-right. Sure, I liked the book when I first unwrapped it for my birthday and everything, and while the pictures are good, it doesn't seem that for such a sleek looking book that there was editing to match AT ALL. Here is an example of an error in the book, and believe me, there are PLENTY more to match: on page 14, it shows a picture of Tara Lipinski doing a layback spin and underneath the picture it reads 1999 European Championships. Well, if the person reading this book is a compulsive studier of figure skating, they will immediately recognize three critical mistakes:(1) Tara retired immediately after her victory at the 1998 Olympic Games and went pro (2) the picture is of her in her Olympic blue long program outfit with the Nagano logo imprinted on the ice visible to everyone's eyes (3) no American/non-European has been allowed to compete at the European Championships since 1948.
Anyway, while the book tries to be professional and even looks professional in some areas, the editing clearly reveals that if the people writing this book really knew and loved figure skating, they would have gotten such simple little mistakes straight without even taking a glance. That being said, overlooking the errors, it's generally a nice book that is fun to look at and flip through from time-to-time. Just don't recommend it to any newbie skating fan because, if they become a skating lover and read the book religiously, chances are what they think is right is going to be based on some of the book's poor editing. Okay, final thought: any ice skating fans out there, get this book, but if you ever had a choice between this and Figure Skating Now, opt for Figure Skating Now. It's perfectly edited and much more informative!

1-0 out of 5 stars Editor needed
Yes, this book has some nice photos, but many are labelled wrong. Skaters who represent asian countries have photos labelled as "1999 European championships". Sure. Every time I look in this book, I find morespelling and factual errors. Who is Tatyana MalAnina? Plus some of thephotos are not flattering at all! I agree that most of the info is straightfrom different websites, magazines and articles.

3-0 out of 5 stars More of the same information
This book supplied more of the same information that you can find in any magazine interview or other story about many of today's famous figure skating stars (and a few from the past). The pictures were of good quality, but there was very little insight or new information to be foundin the text, and many of the pictures were similar to what you'd find inother magazines or books about figure skaters.

All in all, it felt likesomeone just trying to cash in on the figure skating craze. ... Read more
