3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not deep; doesn't always flow through concepts
I'm new to inline skating and I'm looking for a book to get me started. Myexperience with ice skating and skiing is helping me. I'm looking for abook to, "take me to the next level."

This is a good book, butit isn't that.

There are some good pictures that show how to do certainmaneuvers in time lapse. That helps. However, sometimes illustrationsrather than pictures are the most effective means to get a concept acrossto the reader.

The written descriptions on how to do certain things, suchas a Y-stop, are good, but not always thorough enough. It would help if theauthor would build up to certain tasks.

For example, the author mightteach certain points about turning, which could then be used to form thefoundation of a Y-stop.

Learning is about developing a foundation andbuilding on that foundation. Too much in this book was independent ofeverything else I need to learn. I just didn't come away feeling that I hadmoved to the next level because of this book.

Don't get me wrong, Ilearned quite a bit. However, this book wasn't as thorough as I had hoped.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for beginner skaters
If you are enthusiastic about inline skating, you probably want to read everything about it you can get your hands on.I have read 3 or 4 books so far.I have learned at least something good-to-know from each one -- this one included. It's cheap enough -- order it and read it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Helped me speed up on my own
This book is like a personal trainer for inline (roller skating).I started reading this book in July 2006 and by August 2006 I was so much faster in inline skating. This is from someone who has never taken any lessons and started to skate on his own.I did the Northshore Inline (Duluth) half marathon later in Sept 2006 in 1 hour 6 mts (pretty impressive by my own standards).I keep referrring to it once in a while to keep up my training and speed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best tool ever for inline and ice speed skaters
This book is thorugh and even those of us that are completely uneducated about athletics and how to improve in them can understand clearly what is written in this book. I was afraid it would be too technical but it caters to all levels of knowledge. I am very impressed. I plan to start impleting these practices very soon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inline Speed Skating
From the background I had during my competitive years in the sport of inline speedskating, I believe the book is a complete and technical guide to the basic terminology, strategy, and mechanics that are involved with speedskating; both on ice and inline skates. There is heavy usage on photographs to show you the correct way to skate to reach your potential but to achieve what is seen in the picture typically takes years of training with coaches to show you the ways to train your body to achieve the form and stride of an effecient inline skater.

I also believe that some of the material is dated regarding the current face of the sport but the book is a staple in the sport and is a worthy look for outsiders and internally at the facets of the sport of inline and ice speedskating. For anyone interested in speedskating either on ice skates or inline skates, this book is the most comprehensive guide from a champion speedskater that covers most facets of the sport.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get speedier on skates!
A must have. Loaded with information and great pictures. Also very technical training schedules for the serious skaters. Not too much for short trackers but still alot of useful skating information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book of novice and elite skaters
This is a great book for anyone involved in in-line or ice speedskating.Being a speedskater myself, I have had much success using the book.It is great for novice and elite skaters. The book offers a lot of information regarding techinique and training.I hope others have or will have as much success using this book as I have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and concise book
I bought this book a few days ago and I still didn't cover it all, but as far as I read it's a very instructive book. It's very well explained with a concise a clear language and I'm sure it's helping me to improve my skating skills in the last weeks.
I really recommend it to every beginner in-line skater.

3-0 out of 5 stars Inline Skating Review
Liz Miller's instructional book, though wordy, offers an excellent "abc" approach to getting started. For first-time inline skaters, the book provides a thorough explanation of how to get safely up and moving--and stopping. Many of the basic skills are presented in a straightforward, rather easy-to-understand manner, but of course only their consistent application along with diligent practice will produce results. A more detailed explanation of how to control speed and stop on inclines and slopes would be helpful. She clearly presents the rubber foot brake as the best way to control downhill speed, using the standard posture given in other instructional books and videos, but the keeping a vertical "straight back" with flexed knees presents a good amount of instability for beginners, which invites a calamitous backwards fall. Here more about using a slalom approach, carving half circles, etc., with the body bent forward over the center of gravity, would offer more safety while one's ability and confidence grows. In all, it's to be recommended as one of the better books currently available for beginners.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Beginners
This book has very well written instructions to learn in-line skating from the beginning. It has been very useful for me to get some background before heading to a formal skating course. It is nice that the book also contains advice on equipment and related magazines.
I think it should have further figures because many drills are difficult to understand by only a written description.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST Beginner's & Intermediate Guide to In-Line Skating
The most complete guide on, comprehensive step-by-step, In-Line skating lessons. It takes you from beginner to advanced intermediate in the safest way.The fear of falling is gone; you learn how to fall and get up properly. The Yoga poses are very helpful for balance, strength and increased range of motion.Chapter 7 teaches you how to stay fit with "roll-aerobics".Key terms, skate maintenance, safety, etc. are all covered. If a DVD on the skating techniques accompanied the guide on "GET ROLLING" it would obliterate every in-line skating manual.

4-0 out of 5 stars For the absolute beginner
Just an intro about me, I'm a 40yr old male and having lost weight and seeking a more active lifestyle decided that all the times I'd seen rollerbladers on the beach walk, it was for me.

This book will take you from a never skated numbty to a skater with confidence in about 15hour sessions, I'm now over 20-25hours skating and have progressed through the book. It is quite straight forward and although you will find the need to have the book on hand during practice, it will guide you through what corrections you may need to take to finally master the skills. (Some skills took me more time than others to pick up, when I finally realised I wasn't quite carrying out the practice/tuition right.)

While I still manage to have the odd moment (almost falling) it is nice to be able to skate the local beach walk (3km's) knowing that I can stop turn and steer to avoid 'moments'.

Without this book, I believe I'd still be stumbling along in the carpark, frustrated that I wasted so much money. In my area there is limited tuition and this book was just what I needed.

I encourage beginners to heed the safety advice and also purchase 'crash pants' - I spent 2 weeks waiting for skin and bruising to heal from being over enthusiastic in attempting a hill trail too soon.

Get the book, get some good skates and find a vacant flat lot for your first 10hours - try some trails and go back to the lot to build your skills.

I'm enjoying the sport and hope that I can do so for many more of my 'aging' years.

Good Luck.

5-0 out of 5 stars I was a terrified beginner until I found it
It really helped me a lot. Bill's drawings are clear and lots of fun as well. A nice piece of work there.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quirky, but contains great information!
Yes, this book is full of cartoons and feels totally hippie, but it offers really useful information that other books don't.Nealy explains the physics behind certain skating postures and tells you how speed impacts various movements.Interesting! His enthusiasm and humor are great, once you get used to the non-standard "font" (handwriting). You could read and re-read this book and glean more each time.

2-0 out of 5 stars Inline Skating Review
William Nealy's book is a tough read because he's chosen to present basic instruction with hard-to-sort-out and confusing drawings, hand-sketched caricatures of actual skaters. While his overall comments on basic inline skill sets may be helpful, the myriad cartoon drawings aren't, often times appearing indecipherable.Of course an intermediate-level reader most likely will recognize what's going on, but for a beginner seeking underlying fundamentals--good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars Inline!: Beginning to Intermediate Inline Skating

Fun Book!!
Haven't had time to start learning, but it was fun to go through & read...

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
An excellent publication. Diagrams are well thought out, giving all the steps required to complete a move along a timeline. The writing style and use of humour in the text and illustrations makes reading and learning fun, and the author really captures the inner thoughts of a beginning skater as he prepares to execute a move, making the reader feel comfortable with trying them. I keep the book with me and review a page or two now before I skate to hone my skills. Thanks for an excellent publication! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Advanced?
I was looking for a book on advanced techniques -this is NOT the book. She covers roller hockey, speed skating and other topics very briefly. The book is misnamed...........should read "In Line skating Activities".....

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother
Advanced? Are you kidding? This book spends a lot of time about covering a broad range of topics - but none in depth.I was looking for a good book on techniques -- well this is NOT the one.It is very superfiscial and not worth buying.I found some "beginners" books with more info!

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting reading, but broad rather than deep.
This book covers fairly diverse inline areas- speed, hockey, fitness, etc and as a result does not delve too deeply into any one area.If you wish to pursue any one aspect of skating, I'd recommend finding something more specialised. For example, the two areas that I specifically wish to pursue, double push and stair riding, are not covered at all.I find it especially puzzling that stair riding could be missing from a book with this title.

Still, as broad skating book, it's quite interesting and does have some good stuff on stroke technique.

5-0 out of 5 stars verey good book
good book it tells you the basics and more. i loved it cause i love to in-line skate if you dont now after you read it you will...

4-0 out of 5 stars Conditioning for Figure Skating
This book was so good from the library I wanted my own copy so that I could dog ear the pages and make sure I stay on track to get my skating to the level it can be to be great!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for serious figure skaters
This is a well writen book that explains different exercises that will be of benefit to figure skaters and athletes alike. It is more of an adult/young adult read. Overall, very informational.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Information
A wealth of information that is hard to find elsewhere. After reading from cover to cover, I handed it over to my daughters coach and together we developed an off ice training regimen that suits her skill level and reflects her goals. Definite improvement in sucessful jumps completed noticed right away.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone who is serious about ice skating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for skaters of all levels and age
I highly recommend this book. It details off-ice conditioning programs for singles, pairs, or dance and skaters of all ages and skill levels. Strength training, effective warm-up and cool down, plyometric, and other off-ice conditioning programs are detailed, as well as effectively improving your muscular and cardiovascular conditioning on ice. The only negative to this book is the photos and text explaining some of the moves - they could be a bit more descriptive.
A great book from a very qualified author. These programs will yield great results on the ice if you put the time and effort in to conditioning. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book taught me how to skate.
When I first started playing competitive hockey 10 years ago, I didn't know how to skate.I bought this book and learned the physics of skating. After 6 weeks of training on inline skates and at the ice rink my skating was good.During the last game of hockey that year, I remember I chased the other team's best player from his end of the rink to mine and knocked the puck off his stick.I skated to the bench for a line change and one of the guys who hadn't seen me since I started the training said, "Holy! How come you are so fast?". I recommend this to all the guys I play with.I bought the video a few years later, but I think if I had choice of the two, I'd take the book because the book is well written enough that I can visualize what to do.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's all here, the rest is up to you
I have been using this book and the companion DVD for about 18 months. I bought them together after I made the decision to start playing rec league ice hockey at the tender age of 48!What you get out of them is going to depend a lot on what type of learner you are and your motivation. The DVD will appeal to those inclined to the visual, copycat approach. If you prefer to work through the process analytically with descriptive detail, then the book is better than the DVD.I've found them to be excellent complementary learning tools.

There are many paths to success.I have also attended power skating classes and adult hockey camp.A private lesson with a figure skating instructor identified and corrected a posture problem in my backward crossovers. That could have taken months to work out on my own.

The bottom line is that ice skating is an extremely difficult, non-intuitive activity. To get good at it, you simply have to make the commitment of time, energy, and yes money that's required to get out there and practice, practice, practice. This book and other resources can help, but there are no shortcuts or substitutes for lots of hard work on the ice.If you are willing to do this, you will be richly rewarded with superb skating skills that will make a huge difference in games.I am already playing at the intermediate rec league level and enjoying it a bunch.

5-0 out of 5 stars My coach recommended it to me
Laura Stamm's Power Skating was recommended to me by my team and personal skating coach. It covers basics ... in detail!Speed, balance, explosiveness, responsiveness - all depend on the basics underlying your forward and backward stride, including weight distribution, leg extension, edge position, angle, and control, hip position and movement, control of shoulder and torso position, and more.

This book covers the basics you would have drilled into you at any good hockey school or clinic. So if you're wondering why you slip edges, are a fast runner but slow skater, can't quite stop yourself from spinning out of position at times, lose your balance, feel like your upper and lower body aren't working together on the ice, etc. - buy this book and start drilling!

One piece of advice on skates, though. If you've never been fitted by a competent hockey pro shop or at a clinic, go and get it done.Hockey skates aren't shoes or boots and shouldn't fit like them.Wear the wrong skate and you will not only waste your time and money trying to learn to skate properly, you will develop habits you will have to rid yourself of later.Trust me - you are NOT going to be fitted properly at the local sporting goods or department store.Get fitted properly and buy the best skates you can afford.Fitting also addresses more than the skate boot fit.You need someone knowledgeable to help with things like blade type, rocker, and other fitting issues too.

The book and techniques are excellent and the price is cheap.Laura Stamm has been used and endorsed by many pros. You can't go wrong!

5-0 out of 5 stars Crucial resource for developing proper skating technique
At the time of this review, I am 31 years old and preparing for my first season of adult hockey.I had almost zero skating experience (aside from maybe three public skating sessions when I was 12 or so years old) when I decided I wanted to play hockey. Before I started taking skating seriously, I would just go out an mess around on the ice for a half hour at a time. All that did was breed bad habits and frustration. Then, I purchased this book: I can't stress to you just how much the descriptions in this book helped form good skating habits while avoiding/undoing the bad ones.Remember, I am a self-taught skater and by no means perfect, but this book solidifed the fundamentals and spelled out the execution necessary to maximize my power. In just three months of practice patterned after the excercises in this book, I feel like a totally different individual than the unbalanced, directionless clown I was when I started out.Consider this book a must-read if you're looking to get into hockey.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book
You must buy it if you found Laura's DVD is the best skating instructional DVD. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for sensitive kids
Elementary-school-aged girls love these books. My girls start reading them as soon as they're unwrapped! Not exactly literary masterpieces, but kids find them interesting and funny. The stories are always light - good for sensitive children who aren't yet ready for (and might tend to avoid reading) books that are scary or upsetting.

3-0 out of 5 stars How to Jump & Spin on Inline Skates
This is a very enjoyable book, and the written descriptions of how to do each jump are very clear. The one thing I really wish it had are clearer illustrations! The stick-figures are confusing, and make it impossible to see which leg or arm is in front or in back.A stop-action progression of photos, or at least a more lifelike, detailed illustration would go a long way towards enhancing the understanding of how these moves are done.Overall, I still recommend the book, and have found the information useful - especially considering there isn't much (if anything) written about this subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars What People Are Saying About the Book:
From Liz Miller, well-known California skating instructor and author of the books Get Rolling, Advanced Inline Skating and California Inline Skating:

"Jo Ann has a warm, encouraging and very enthusiastic writing style, and she delivers what the book's title promises: information about the inline figure skating discipline, gear, and moves. The gear section and glossary are also useful."

From John Petell, President of Harmony Sports:

"Jo Ann's book is a giant step toward exposing the fine sport of inline freestyle skating, with its many and wonderous movements, to the public.

From Nick Perna, National and International figure skating coach and co-inventor of the Pic-Frame skate:

"This book is well written and extremely thorough for this type of instruction. I think just about anybody who is interested in inline figure skating techniques will be able to learn something new from this book. I hope someone in the future will do an instructional video based on the book!"

5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT BOOK!
This book is so much fun!

I am an ice and roller skater. Now, I'm able to in-line skate like I do on the ice and on traditional roller skates!

HOW TO JUMP AND SPIN ON IN-LINE SKATES has taught me what to do.

What I like the best is that I can now do spins on in-line skates. The writer explains in detail how to do moves.

When I follow the steps described, I find myself doing amazing things.

I really like the photos and drawings of the skaters in action.

Every day, I can't wait to get my skates on!

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE SKATING because of this book!
Jo Ann's writing style is so fun, and every section makes me want to put my skates on and try what she writes about. The drawings by Larisa Gendernalik are great! They show that the artist does know much about figure skating.

Everyone who loves to skate must read this book since it will make you want to skate and skate and skate.

I am an ice skater and what is amazing is that this book has helped me with my ice skating too.

Thank you, Jo Ann, for writing this book!

2-0 out of 5 stars May be useful for beginning inline adults...NOT for ice skaters
Definitely not for any cross-over (no pun intended) figure skaters.

If you are past the USFSA Basic Skills level, the only page in this book that has any potential of being helpful is page 35, "A note to ice skaters."

I really appreciate the efforts of this book and the niche subject, but it is obviously vanity published, and therefore very, very unprofessional and vexing to read.

In perspective, however, I acquired one skating tip from this book for $13 plus shipping, which is considerably cheaper than one tip from a Russian skating coach, plus shipping :) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
has drawings for the utmost beginner but I still recommend a video to see it in action.

5-0 out of 5 stars If only I had read this book before falling!
I thoroughly enjoyed "Babes on Blades". The piece that is worth the price of the book is how to get up. It is not so simple when your feet are rolling every which way. Just read a few simple paragraphs, look at the photos and you will be back on your blades in no time. I thought the pictures were very good at explaining things and I appreciated all of the safety hints. For someone over 5, this is a must-read book. If you are younger, just have someone read it to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Babes on Blades: Drop Physical, Mental and Spiritual Flab...
The content of this spirited piece is filled with necessary wordy explanations of inline skating moves. The book "shows" as much as it "tells" with full page photographs illustrating the basics throughout. It goes beyond skating, actually, as it encourages all women to get off the couch and "into the streets where they belong." The underlying them is people moving from depression, oppression and personal challenges into the light of acceptance as they expand their personal paradyms. Davis' fun-loving wit and enthusiasm make this book a fast and interesting read.
