2-0 out of 5 stars Don't by this book unless you are too rich
This book has pages and pages of words and very little pictures. There are more than half of the book on "mental preparation", "altitude toward skating", "Why should you skating", "protection geer" and very little to do with actual "skating".It's hard to write a book on skating but this book is definately not up to standard. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent beginners GUIDE to inline skating
Liz Miller has written a great book for the beginner skater. It covers what you need, how to avoid injuries, maintenance of equipment and over a dozen of skills.

Now some people think you can learn to skate by just reading a book, and that is wishfull thinking and NOT what this book is about! If you want to learn inline skating, take a lesson from a certified instructor.( ...) When taking those lessons, you can read through this book and it will give you excellent insights on how and what.

This book makes great reading for both instructors as well as the general skater. This second edition (1998) is a very good improvement on the first edition (1992).

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners. A cram book for experienced skaters
This is NOT a book for the beginners. This book is sort of an exam cram book which is designed for the people who want to pass Inline Skate Exam, if such thing ever exists.

Probably most of the techniques in inlineskating are described in this book - very succinctly, but to the point. Youreally have to sit down, and STUDY this book.I skate on ice (since when Iwas 10), and have been inline-skating for more than 5 years (well, on andoff). And I wanted to get the proper techniques of inline skating. Becauseof my experience, I could study this book, and get the feeling of what itis talking about most of the time, but I wonder whether beginners wouldhave any idea.

As noted by other reviewers, this book lacks pictures. Beginners NEED pictures. If this book was titled as "Inline Skate ExamPreparation Summary Book", I would give three or four stars. But sinceit was titled as "The beginner's guide to in-line skating", Ihave to give only 1 star. There is no way beginners can learn any skatingtechnique from this book. I know since I have been teaching my kids and myfriends how to skate/rollerblade. They need demonstration. They need EASYdemonstration. Words alonejust don't work for beginners.

While thereare good succinct descriptions which really get to the point, there areother ridiculous descriptions, like: . Essentially the paragraph was saying, "Avoid them or rollover". I mean, what's the point ? Obviously, you should also avoidhitting against the cars or other bikers on the street.

In general, I doNOT think that this is a good book about inline skating, andespeciallybeginners should avoid this book.

One day, I went to a used book store, and found this amazing book that other reviewers talked about: "How ToSkate" by Inline Skate Magazine. For each technique, it shows at leastmore than 10 pictures(step-by-step photographs) with four or fiveparagraphs of explanation. This IS what you (beginners) should buy.Unfortunately, this book won't be available now, since it says "Summer1995, Display until July 31".

The author of this book shouldactually have had some experience of teaching BEGINNERS how to skate, before they publish a book for them. If they have had, they wouldn't havewritten this way.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent textual description but not enough pictures
They say, "A picture is worth a thousand words." In the case of rollerblading, this adage certainly holds true.As previous reviewers have stated, this book is sorely lacking in pictures.Sure, every few pages ithas a black and white picture of a skating technique, but the quanitity ofpictures is not enough.Another problem is that the book does not haveSTEP by STEP pictures. To illustrate a technique, the author only placesone photograph from only one angle.A more helpful approach would havebeen to demonstrate a technique by showing the technique from start tofinish with a series of freeze frame photographs. I'm guessing that placingmore pictures would have driven up the cost of the book, but I for onewould have shelled out more money for the extra photographs. However, despite this seemingly fatal flaw of not enough photographs, the book makesup for it with very clear prose. The author has an uncanny talent fordescribing skating techniques with the right words. Most of the time I hadno trouble following the author's descriptions; however, the lack of stepby step pictures made it very hard for me to know if I was doing thetechnique correctly despite the clear writing style.Originally, I wastempted to give this book three stars but the extraordinary writing of theauthor pushes the book up to four stars, but the lack of diagramsultimately is too big of a stumbling block to merit the book five stars. However, to put the score in perspective, other roller blading books I havechecked out also did not have step by step diagrams for each technique sothis book, "Get Rolling," is the best among them until someoneproduces a book with step by step diagrams -- preferably colorful, glossyones.Until then, I'm gonna continue looking -- and skating.

3-0 out of 5 stars Solid book for skating course
This is a good step-by-step book that looks like it belongs for a fall one quarter college course in inline skating. The book is well done and quite helpful, but would be best served in a class with a competent instructor. Not too many illustrations and the word-pictures would be hard to follow onyour own. Also a good reference to check technique as you improve.

1-0 out of 5 stars One of the worst books you can buy to learn roller-blade
This should be one of the worst book you can buy to learn or increase your ability to roller-blade. Imagine that you are trying to learn piano with virtually no picture. Imagine that you are learning to play guitar, tennis,...etc from reading explanations with virtually no picture. This book ishow the authors try to teach you how to roller-blade.Of course it hassome pictures, but what is the point of havingjust one picture for eachtechnique ? For example, let's say you want to learn backward cross-over.This book has only one illustration (not even a picture) for this one. Whatis the point for this ?There are bunch of good books out there which showyou at least 15 pictures of the snap shots for each technique. And this ishow you learn roller-blade: by trying to imitate what good stakers do. Notby "blah, blah, blah..." I was greatly disappointed by this book, and it shows clearly that you should NOT buy the books by the *high*ratings in Amazon. Buying this book is a great way to waste your money.Iwould actually want to give minus stars, but Amazon doesn't havesuchrating unfortunately. ... Read more

Everywhere you turn, there are inline skaters of all ages, out there for the exercise, travelling to work or school, or skating just for the fun of it. With this explosion has come increased legislation to prohibit skating on urban streets. The Southern Ontario Inline Skating Guide rolls to the rescue with maps and trail descriptions for thirty trails throughout Southern Ontario. This compact, easy-to-use guide provides skaters, from novice to expert, with safe, scenic, legal alternatives to our already busy streets and sidewalks.

3-0 out of 5 stars Trail, not for eveyone.....
I don't know about you, but I won't drive for an hour just to go to some trails to skate. The "How-to" section is not great, you better be a pretty good skater to use this book. The trail map, none of them I can reach without driving for an hour.Maintaining section, I've seen better. If you like skating on trails and happened to live beside one, this book is for you.
