4-0 out of 5 stars Encyclopedia of in-line skating
While getting an aerobic workout at a lake I frequent, I have noticed many familiar faces changing their workouts to include rollerblading. This made me think of my first experiences with in line skating some ten years ago. I bought this book back when it came out because then there wasn't much available to read and get some tips . I found this book to very helpful for getting started and have looked it over again and still feel there is valuable information for all levels of skaters. When you are just starting to get out and roll this book can provide some helpful hints and suggestions to make your excursions on wheels even more fun. The author covers all facets of in-line skating. When you are just beginning with the sport a whole new worldopens up for the active individual. There is in-line hockey, speed skating, racing, skate dancing, figure skating, aggressive, freestyle and streetstyle skating, ramps(there are even building plans) and a variety of organizations, clubsand associations provided by the author, Albert Fried-Cassorla to introduce you to the world of skating. I found the maintenace of rollerblades section to be especially helpful when I began. The author covers the various styles of in-line skating, the specialized skates for the different interests, and also discusses the use of safety equipment which is really valuable when you are just learning. Pads and helmets can save trips to the hospital. It is inevitable to fall and the suggested equipment will make your falls cushioned and save you from getting "road rash." There really is a variety of information for the different uses of rollerblades, something for everyone who is taking up the sport.I would recommend this book to the begineer especially. For the recreational in-line skater, or work out enthsiast, the healthful benefits are discussed and compared with other aerobic activites. The author also has workout plans and strategies for interval trainingand advanced intervel training that will help you work on achieving fitness goals. This book is very handy at whatever level you are at because advanced moves are also illustrated and explained with clarity. Get this book to get you where you are going, why walk when you can roll? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Filling a niche, and it's about time!
The History of Roller Skating is a wonderful book about a topic that has been sorely neglected. Even most competitive roller skaters have very little knowledge of the history of their sport; Turner's book goes a long way toward filling in those gaps, with emphasis on the USA skating scene.

With lots of detail and many wonderful photos, this History is entertaining for those both in and out of the US competitive skating community. It's also of interest to ice skaters and ice skating fans who are curious about the shared history of ice and roller skating.

Color photos would be a nice edition to a future edition of this book (the current edition features black and white photos), especially in the chapter that talks about changes in skating costuming over the years. If there was anything else I would change, it would be to add more about the skaters who have made history throughout the years.Who were the great skaters, the equals of ice skating's Dorothy Hamill or Brian Boitano? Since roller skating doesn't get TV coverage, those skaters are unknown, and they shouldn't be. The book mentions some of the skaters and their feats, but more photos and statistics would be tremendous -- there really is no other source for them.

Even without those improvements, this is an excellent book that I can recommend with no reservations. ... Read more

Product Description
Given the popularity of all types of skating--on the ice, on the boards, and on the streets--why isn't roller skating an Olympic event? Author David H. Lewis sought out people involved in every aspect of the sport in an attempt to answer this question. He talked to competition judges and coaches, rink operators and rink organists, and scores of skaters from around the world. The answers he found--and there are many--are likely to anger and astound readers in turn. Those answers, along with a wealth of information on the world of roller skating past, present and future, are detailed Whether you skate for the love of it, or have higher aspirations in the world on wheels, "Roller Skating for Gold" is fascinating and illuminating reading. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Confirming what skaters already know.
"Why isn't roller skating in the Olympics?" This question has bothered skaters and skating fans for decades. Occasionally it seems that the sport will finally get its day in the sun, but inevitably it retreats to the status quo. Skaters toil on wheels, unknown, while their counterparts on ice score millions of dollars in commercial contracts.

David Lewis recounts the story of roller skating's years of attempting to join the Olympic games, and points out some rather scathing reasons why it hasn't happened yet. Substantial amounts of blame can be placed with the IOC, but even more blame is laid at the feet of the USA Roller Skating organization, portrayed here as inept and out of touch with what needs to be done to push skating forward.

In some cases Lewis' ideas are a bit out of touch themselves -- does he really think that fans would swarm to watch roller skaters compete in school figures or American Dance? Only skaters enjoy watching those events, and not even many of them! But his heart is in the right place, and he clearly has affection for the sport.

Roller Skating for Gold is a good read, but be aware that there are tons of typos and a few factual errors, and the price is extremely high for such a slim book. The high price is the major reason I could only give the book three stars. Were it half the price, it would be a 5 (or at least 4 1/2) star book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars hmmm....
An adequate and fair history of the art of figure skating from its origins to the present. One aspect I found troubling was the book's committment to viewing the art through the eyes of feminist "gender identity" theory. I'm not sure what an introduction to post modernist feminism contributes to a book about figure skating.
Another shortcoming is the author's occasional fade into modern academic jargon that borders on gibberish. Consider the following gem of a sentence from page 259: "The conflicting codes of both "feminine" objectification and "masculine" agency in the person of the same skater provide a potentially empowering tension in symbolic identification with a position that is neither purely powerless nor purely powerful, blurring the either/or dichotomy of a structialist reading into an androgenous both/and." What is missing here is basic writing skill.

I really bought this book for the picture of Michelle Kwan on the cover, Still I learned a fair amount about the art of figure skatingfrom reading it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Figure skating gets the respect it deserves
_Culture on Ice_ is the first skating book I have bought in more than two years. It is also the first skating book where I actually learned something in every chapter and started to think about skating in ways that hadn't occurred to me.

Even though it's an "academic" book, its contents and message appeal to skating fans universally. The first two chapters are heavy on theory and may present some difficulty for those unfamiliar with academic theories of meaning, but they're worth sloughing through.(I think you could even get away with skipping them if you really can't get through the language.)Chapter three onward should be relatively smooth sailing for any confirmed skating fan with the caveats that the language is academic and the sentences are long.

The research is meticulous, and the chapter notes are full of exciting hidden gems of amazing detail. The technical appendix and suggestions for further reading alone would be worth the cover price for anyone looking to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the sport.

_Culture on Ice_ is successful as a work of theory, a work of history, and an appreciation of all who contribute to figure skating.Kudos to Ellyn Kestnbaum for taking figure skating beyond coffee-table-book status and establishing a framework for future critical analysis of the sport. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Superrr....
it's funny to learn in-line skating by this book.I prefer everyone to buy this. I love skating,I love AMAZON

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled - it's actually a cartoon book!
Yes, that's right. I was completely fooled. This books is just a bunch of cartoons, written with text. Very unprofessional. Very uninformative. Too childish! Nothing you would want. I'm shocked it's on the market. If this piece of dung can get published, then we all have a chance with our own mindless doodles.

4-0 out of 5 stars great for beginner
This book is easy to read and the writer give a good number of useful tips.

As a beinnger who has just skatea fwtimes, this book allows me to know more about skating andsome of the movements.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nowhere Near Complete -- Even For Beginners
Let's start with the cover of the book."Basic and advanced techniques" it says.Really?Crossing one skate over the other and jumping in place are about as advanced as this book gets.

For thecomplete beginner, this can be a handy book.If you've never set foot onskates, or can't figure out how to stop, this book can help.If you'd liketo read a brief history of in-line skating, this book can help.If you'reinterested in skating purely for physical fitness, this book can help.

If, on the other hand, you're interested in learning more than how tostop, go, turn and skate backwards (though I find this instructions forskating backwards to be lacking) then keep looking, you won't find any"advanced" information here.

All in all, this book toucheslightly on a variety of beginner's topics, but fails to keep its promises, especially to those looking to get more in-depth. ... Read more
