Product Description

  • Ideal for exploring at a relaxed pace, on easy terrain
  • Covers 40 rail-trails throughout Washington state, hundreds of miles in all
  • Ideally suited for walkers, bicyclists, equestrians, joggers, skaters, cross-country skiers, and even the physically challenged

Looking for new ways to enjoy Washington's great outdoors?Have you had it with mountainsides of endless switchbacks? If exploring at a different pace on easier terrain is more your style, Washington's Rail-Trails: Walking - Running - Bicycling - In-Line Skating - Horseback Riding has what you're looking for.

Washington's Rail-Trails: Walking - Running - Bicycling - In-Line Skating - Horseback Riding is the first in-depth guide to all of the rail-trails currently open in Washington State.Walkers, bicyclists, equestrians, joggers, in-line skaters, cross-country skiers, and even the physically challenged can enjoy hundreds of miles of flat, safe, ready-made pathways perfectly suited for non-motorized activities. These converted abandoned railways, whose tracks and ties departed with the decline of railroading, connect towns and suburbs as they wind through some of Washington's prettiest countryside.In-city trails, such as the Burke-Gilman Trail, pave the way for commuters to walk and bike to work each day.

The 40 rail-trails represented here are broken down into three regions, covering all kinds of territory. The Northwest area's 12 rail-trails include the Old Robe Historic Trail, Snoqualmie Pass Trail, and the Snohomish-Arlington Centennial Trail.Highlighting the Puget Sound area are the Preston-Snoqualmie and the King County Interurban Trail.Eastern Washington offers the Iron Horse State Park and Spokane River Centennial Trails, plus 9 more.Trail descriptions, accompanied by maps and photos, include complete information on length, surface, entry and endpoints, trail managers, restrictions, safety, and etiquette.

A leader in rail-trail development, Washington State has long recognized the advantages of these "linear parks."Author Fred Wert presents an in-depth look at railroad history, the recreational, historic, and economic importance of rail-trails, and how citizens can get involved to develop, promote, and protect new and existing trails.

Whether you are walking, riding, running, or rolling,Washington's Rail-Trails: Walking - Running - Bicycling - In-Line Skating - Horseback Riding will be a constant companion for rewarding outdoor experiences.

5-0 out of 5 stars As the title says, "complete."
The Complete Book of Roller Skating was published in 1979, before the fallof disco skating and the rise of inline skating. Still, this book is anexcellent resource for anyone interested in quad roller skating. It coversskating's history in detail, with lots of great photographs, and devoteschapters to artistic, hockey, speed, disco, and outdoor skating.

Unlikemost other skating reference books, this one talks about the competitiveskating world (at least, as it was in 1979), not just about recreationalskating. We see (in words and photos) skaters training for competition atNationals and Worlds, performing such difficult moves as "theimpossible sit spin," a pairs spin that requires amazing strength fromboth skaters.

The book also includes two chapters of skating lessons, from basic forward skating through spins and the salchow jump.

Whilerecent skating developments can't be found here, and the book is long outof print, it is well worth purchasing if you can find a copy. ... Read more

Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Inline speed skating is the sport of racing on inline skates (Roller sports) It is often called inline racing by participants. Although it primarily evolved from racing on traditional roller skates, the sport is similar enough to ice speed skating that many competitors are now known to switch between inline and ice speed skating according to the season. An inline speed skate is a specialized shoe version of the inline skate. The boot or shoe is close-fitting, without much padding and usually made of leather and carbonfiber and/or fiberglass composites. For best performance the boot must conform closely to the shape of the foot, so most inline speed skating boots are heat-moldable, which allows the user to re-shape the boots to some extent when heat is applied (by placing the boots in oven at 200 °F (93.3 °C) for 20 minutes after taking off the wheels, frames, and straps/buckles). The frame (sometimes called the chassis or plate) which holds the wheels is made of aircraft-quality aluminum and/or magnesium and usually mounts three, four, or five polyurethane wheels of between 78 mm and 110 mm diameter. Each wheel contains 2 precision bearings with an aluminum spacer. The three wheel frames are used primarily for younger skaters or skater with small feet. Beginning in 2002 through improvements in skate technology, manufacturers began marketing wheels from 84 mm up to 110 mm in diametera noticeable change from nearly a decade of 80 mm wheel size. Over the next several years national and world records were shattered often suggesting this new technology may have been responsible. Bearing sizes have been standardized around the 608 series, though some manufacturers have tried 688 series ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=261635 ... Read more
