5-0 out of 5 stars I should know!
I am experienced in BJJ and have taken Muay-Thai for years. That being said this book is awesome. The striking sections absolutly suck but gues what...this is not a striking book.He does good for someone who knows nothing about stand-up.As far as BJJ.It is great.Espesially for someone who is trying to learn MMA.All the tachniques are no-gi so it aplies to MMA.If you want to learn some cross-collar chokes or scarf-holds then look them up online...or use your imagination. This book shows you almost every relivant technique that you need for MMA or street fighting. Why else learn this stuff.IF you buy this book you will be very happy.I return to it all the time to refresh on stuff for training.Great job Rodrigo.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, no pajama wrestling!
First of all this book has nice crystal clear glossy photo's, to me that doubles the value right there! I have another book with black and white picture on regular paper and while the content is quite good it just doesn't beckon me to read it like this one. Second of all while the cover shows him wearing a Gi there is no freakin Gi's in the book thank goodness!! If you are sick and tired of every single move being explained...and reach and grab his Gi this is the book for you! No Bath Robe wrestling in here! Third of all this book is easily a $20 book and one of the sellers is selling it new for $9.50, snatch it up before they come to their senses! The other reviewer talked about it like he was going to give it 5 or 4 stars and then gave it 3 for some reason? Great prodution quality, no Gi, all the good moves you need to know, seems like 5 stars to me.

3-0 out of 5 stars Another good Gracie book
Pride Fighting veteran Rodrigo Gracie presents BJJ's approach to MMA fighting in this book.It starts, like most Kid Peligro books, with an introduction in which Rodrigo addresses mental and physical preparation, teaching and learning techniques, adjusting grappling for MMA, picking a strategy and a team.Though each section is brief, I believe their inclusion in this book is a smart move, especially to those who are new to the MMA game.Next, the majority of the book is on techniques. The author basically looks at MMA through the eyes of a jiujitsu specialist, and his choice of techniques and strategy reflects this. His stand-up techniques, for instance, focus primarily on getting into clinching position and taking the opponent down, though he does have some nice distance drills and defenses that lead right into takedowns. He then moves on to groundwork, and spends roughly half of that time addressing the guard. He has separate chapters on attacking from the closed guard, attacking from the open guard, and passing the guard. After guard work he talks about side control, the mount (including back mound), and the knee-on-stomach.Those last two sections were noticeably small compared to the others. The positives of this book were the clear, color pictures (as in most Gracie-Peligro works), the fact that Gracie didn't neglect the striking-as-a-compliment-to-grappling aspect of MMA, the order the moves were in (often a follow-up move was shown immediately after a primary move), and the very clear strategy that was followed throughout the book.I really can't find anything wrong with this book, though nothing particularly special jumped out at me.If you know BJJ, and can figure out that you can hit, most of the ground stuff would be common-sense.I'd recommend this book to fighters, primarily to BJJers getting into the MMA game (to make the transition easier) and to fighters who's primary base is striking (to both address the ground game, and to learn how to use their strikes on the ground as part of an overall strategy). ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Bad karate, worse judo
This is not the Jujitsu I've experienced. If Clark is the grand pooba of Jujitsu in England, I'm disappointed.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good material, sub-par formating
This book is a valuable asset for those wishing to learn the basic techniques of Japanese-style Jiu Jitsu, or how to defend themselves. The text includes a number of throwing and locking techniques which can be used both with the gi (jacket) and without. There are also several self-defense combinations presented, including defense against strangles from the feet and on the ground, escapes from full- and half-nelsons, and ground defense against a standing opponent.Standard lapel grab and bearhug defenses are also shown. The photos are black and white, with good quality, which helps when looking at the technique. The techniques are shown in the order of belt syllabus, covering white, yellow, and green belts. There is also a brief introductory section which includes warmups, breakfalls, ettiquete, bowing, and certain World Jiu Jitsu Federation regulations. On the down side, some individual techniques aren't covered before they're shown in combination (for example the first technique shown involves a combination punch, throw, and jointlock), and there seems to be no apparent order to the techniques, other than all choke defenses, etc. are shown together.Basic striking isn't even discussed until the Green Belt Syllabus, and never demonstrated as individual technique. Also, the principles behind the throws are never discussed, which takes away some from the overall value. In conclusion, a very good book, but it could have been much better organized and explained.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent training manual
My first book on jiu-jitsu was over 40 years ago with the great E.J. Harrison's classic book on the subject in an early 60s or late 50s edition. Jiu-jitsu books have come a long way since Harrison's time, and sensei Clark follows in that great tradition with this very well-written and beautifully illustrated and photographed instructional book on this phase of the curriculum. Very clear photos illustrate the techniques, accompanied by clear and concise descriptions in the text.

One of my main interests is hold and lock reversals and counters, and I was pleased to see seven of them included in this syllabus, four for armlocks and three for choke holds. I tend to come at this from the Chin Na end of the spectrum but I have great respect for the jiu-jitsu aspects of it as well, and they should be taught more often than they are.

One other thing that is different from many jiu-jitsu and judo books of the past is the emphasis on classical karate kicks, punches, and strikes. Sensei Clark must have some training there, over and above the usual atemi-waza training since he has quite nice classical technique, being a karate instructor myself. No doubt the pervasive influence of karate and TKD have had some effect over the years on jiu-jitsu training as well.

Students of the art, especially those in the WJJF, should find this a useful companion to their training with many helpful tips and info on all the white belt to green belt techniques.

5-0 out of 5 stars A clear, competent and concise instruction book
This book, like the others in this series comes highly recommended.

Robert Clark is one of the biggest names in British ju-jitsu. This book illustrates the moves required to pass his "World Ju-jitsuFederation" grading scheme.

Since he was one of the first on thescene in the UK it has had a great influence.

This book provides a solidfoundation for any jitsuka. It is clearly illustrated (with the authorperforming the moves) and well presented.

A "must have" book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent instruction manual for ju-jitsu enthusiasts.....
Earlier works by Robert Clark have suffered from the 'dark photograph'syndrome found in many martial arts books.

This publication shows theimprovement that can be achieved with first-class camera work and properuse of placing Tori and Uke in light and dark Gi (clothing forpractise).

Anyone who is making a serious attempt to improve their rangeof techniques for grading purposes etc. would do well to purchase this bookas it is an easy reference to throws, ground techniques and finishes.

Ihave also purchased the White to Green Belt and the Black belt publicationsin the same series, which are equally high quality publications.

Buythese books, they are worth every penny in saving your practise time andimproving your rate of progress. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical/Balanced/Excellent +++
Jiu Jitsu Complete by Kiyose Nakae is very PRACTICAL, using plenty of turn-around moves -- without clothing-grips or ground-pins -- to deal with possible multiple attackers, maybe not in Gi-uniforms. It has a rich, yet modest, array of "tricks", including "striking" and "grappling", that cover a lot of situations without overdoing it. And the "tricks" are BALANCED, matching the actual attack-situations very well, without being too long or complex, with possible options and combinations shown appropriately. Also the line-drawings and explanations are EXCELLENT, streamlined, concise and clear. Finally, there are seven methods of resuscitation to make this Jiu Jitsu Complete -- a compact and modern form of Kito-Ryu Aiki-Jujutsu +++

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good, for the subject mater
This is one of the better books out there for using Japanese Ju-Jitsu for self defense.Being from the 50s, you'll read stuff about "jiujutsu tricks" and "cheer up, begginner", so the style of writting is a little dated. However, the book, as it is written, is well-illustrated, biulds from one move to the next, and has some of the best explainations for the throws that I have ever seen. There's moves in here that you don't see anymore, which is good, because I've seen how they still work. There is a small section on dealing with firearms that I'm a little skepticalabout, but the author insists he's been able to pull off the moves shown.Another thing I like is that the throws are done without gis, and can be used against a guy wearing a t-shirt.This book is designed to give the user a small, but effective and interchangable, arsenal for one-on-one defense. Not too much on philosophy/art stuff here, but some sportative applications may be found. Not really a must-have, but a very good book nonetheless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grate self-defense book!
This book I find has grate examples for self-defense. They are simple and easy to learn/practice. It covers everything from simple escapes from wrist holds, to headlocks.
It even a small section on defense against weapons.

I recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn self-defense.
(A good book for beginners.)

4-0 out of 5 stars It worked for James Bond...
If you like the moves that James Bond used to take out Pussy Galore in Gold Finger, get this book.I think you could use this book to re-create most mid sixties fight scenes. While I was reading this book, I could hear Austin Powers saying, "Judo Chop". It's too bad this book is paperback, otherwise, you could put it on the coffee table and claim it was vintage.

All my blah blah blah is amounting to saying that this book seems dated, and maybe a little unrealistic. It's a cool book.I'm not upset I bought it, but I'm not going to try most of these moves on anybody.I say most, because a few of these moves look kinda' cool.I might try two or three from the whole book in a "play spar" situation

4-0 out of 5 stars Gentle on the reader
Do not be fooled by the simplicity of this book.Much like the many illustrations, the exercises and techniques are powerful and may even be dangerous if not taken seriously. The book should not be mistaken for a Crash Course.

Jiu jitsu is truly a Gentle Martial Art.With this book, I am surprised at how quickly one can learn how to utilize the energy of an assailant to one's advantage. The movements are simple, yet they require attention to master. You should learn how to execute each lesson quickly with minimum effort.

Long practice hours ARE necesary in order to master the techniques gracefully.

Accompanied by meditation, a balanced diet and an attitude of respect towards your surroundings, I feel that the exercises in this book may provide a healthy lifestyle to anyone interested in learning more about Jiu Jitsu ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Historical Value for Hawaiian Lineage Kenpo People
Originally published in 1953, "What is Self Defense? (Kenpo Jiu-Jitsu)" was reprinted in 1980 by the Kosho-Shorei Publishing Company. The second edition includes introductions from James Mitose's post-conviction students, Bruce Juchnik and Rick Alemany, and advisor Arnold M. Golub.

Most noteable as a historic work showing some of the earliest students of Kenpo demonstrating techniques including Mitose himself, there are also sections on Mitose's version of his art's history.Although research in recent years has shown that some of the pictures in James Mitose's book were taken directly from earlier published volumes on Okinawan Karate which were available to Okinawans on Hawaii at that time.Included among these would be a photo of Choki Motobu on page IV taken from the second plate in Motobu's book "Watashi no Karatejutsu", and Fusetsu Nakamura's painting of Daruma on page I taken directly from the second page plate of Mizuho Mutsu's book "Tode Kenpo" (Japanese). Most of the techniques Mitose demonstrates on the makiwara likewise are identical in their demonstration to earlier sequences shown in Motobu's books from the 1930's.

Many of the physical demonstrations of technique show a number of people well known in kenpo history circles, including Thomas Young (practical mentor to Bruce Juchnik and Mitose's designated successor of Kosho in Hawaii when he left for the mainland) and William Chow (Teacher of Kajukenbo's Adriano Emperado and American Kenpo's Ed Parker as well as Bill Chun, Sam Kuoha, and others).Young and Chow demonstrate a technique together in a particularely clear sequence on page 42, with Chow as Uke.

Virtually every technique demonstrated is identical to other schools of Jiu Jitsu common to Hawaii at the time, especially Okazaki's Danzan Ryu.The exceptions to this are the makiwara (striking post) techniques Mitose demonstrates on pages 2-13.These appear to have been staged as to make them appear nearly identical to the Makiwara sequences Motobu showed in his already mentioned book, "Watashi no Karatejutsu" on pages 14-18.

It is really too bad that with all of the effort going on in both Okinawa, Japan, China, Taiwan and the United States to preserve and reprint books of historic value pertaining to Karate and Jujutsu, this one has fallen victim to bad publicity, political fighting from different Kosho factions, and apparently, indifference.Regardless of James Mitose's personal life, this book is a treasure for collectors. To learn more about James Mitose in Hawaii during the 1950's, please see Charles Goodin's Hawaii Karate Museum website. There is also a detailed article about this book written by Goodin in the magazine, "Classical Fighting Arts" #3 (19-24, 59).

The Mitose saga and the evolution of Mitose-lineage kenpo is really deserving of a book in and of itself.Maybe some day we'll get our wish!Early Hawaiian Kenpo deserves at least that. ... Read more

Product Description
The Guard is the quintessential Brazilian Jiu Jitsu position. Other martial arts assume that once someone is on their back that the fight is over. But that assumption is unfounded. Fights don’t end just because they hit the ground. For the jiu jitsu man the fight has only just begun. The Guard is a detailed analysis of core concepts, details, and techniques key to success for ground fighting.Author Joe Moreira reveals secrets of his guard technique developed and refined over his thirty five years studying and teaching martial arts. In this volume he shares the fundamentals of his jiu jitsu, the specific details needed to make it work, and technique ranging from beginning to advanced. The philosophy in this book and of Moreira teaching style is that it is better to understand groups of moves/options from given positions, than isolated moves. This is an exposition of sequences of moves from specific situations, not a collection of random moves. The Guard shows not only how to attack or defend from a position but also how to respond to an opponent’s likely reactions.Continuing in the model of Grappling Arts Publications first volume, Passing the Guard, The Guard provides a revolutionary approach in its visual presentations. Techniques are shown from multiple angles. Key points are illustrated. Photo sequences are laid out in intuitive easy to follow patterns. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid
Aside from the guidence of instructors Tyrone Glove and Mike Fowler, I've used this book and lots of excerpts [...]to help me visualize my guard attack; which has become pretty nasty for a white belt.I review the very detailed illustrations in this book on a regular basis, and use thefront and back blank white pages as a diary of subs I've gotten and new techniques learned.I love to pull and attack from guard, with the help of good flexibility and regular yoga, I plan a more detailed study of Eddie Bravos material on rubber guard and attacks from half and full guard. This book was the first place I started though, and I'm glad I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for BJJ players
Excellent! This and Passing the Guard are very well done. I think they may have used too much space sometimes for drills that are simplistic (e.g. p.28-29, 32 pics showoing Moriera spinning his legs?). But the detail, as in the first, is better than I have seen in any Bjj book. The Gracies should take note. With the exception perhaps of Rodrigo's Path to Black Belt and Peligro's The Essential Guard.

5-0 out of 5 stars In Depth Treatment of Guard, for Intermediate Grapplers (with Gi)
As with "Passing the Guard", no other book focuses on the bjj guard so much, with so much details. The paper is cheaper and the pictures are darker than those in the first volume ("Passing the Guard"), but the page count increased and the content is still high guality, if not higher.

I'm a bjj blue belt and I like this book a lot, but it's not an easy book to use. You have to study it, choose the techniques that fit your style and don't get lost in all the material. It's easy to loose focus with such huge work.

If you are not an experienced grappler, and your guard game is still fragmented, I suggest you to buy and study "The Essential Guard" first (for at least 3-6 months). After you have mastered the fundamental skills, you will get a lot more from "The Guard".

5-0 out of 5 stars The best by far.
After viewing many jiu-jitsu books and videos I find the Joe Moreia's teaching technique is the bestunderstood and when applied correctly make you a force to be reckoned with on the mat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Thought Out and Presented
This book is certainly worth the money and is a great study of the guard position. The authors are thorough and systematic in their coverage of the guard.

Some chapters are based on the specific position that your opponent is assuming while in your guard and this is very helpful in planning your repetoire.

The level of detail is tremendous and this book should be read with pen and paper at some point so you can decide which techniques fit well into your style. The section on "flowing attack" offers combinations and this section alone is almost worth the price of the book.

There is a large amount of pictures and often there are different views of the same technique. Also, they have so many pictures to describe what is happening in only a few seconds that sometimes it can be less than optimal as far as a teaching tool.

My only complaints are that sometimes they go over board with the number of pictures per technique and the descriptions while usually good sometimes leave a little to be desired (e.g. they say "shift the hips" but you can't tell which way). Also, some of the tecniques are for GI ONLY so that's something to be aware of.Finally, I don't understand why they put out such a good book but forget to do a spell check...there are a few errors here and there and some are real obvious. ... Norman Leff has been training in the martial arts for half a century.Back in the days when martial arts were still considered mystical and mysterious in this country, Norman was already earning his first black belt. His training took a dramatic turn in the 1960's when, living in South America, he met a former Royal Japanese Marine who revealed to him the secrets of combat jiu jitsu - a non-sport oriented style of jiu jitsu used by the Japanese military in hand to hand combat situations.Later, as a bouncer in New York, Norman learned to apply these techniques in a real street encounter.Learn the atemi-waza strikes, takedowns, finishing holds and fight stoppers of combat jiu jitsu. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars don't buy it
Thought the book gave insight in real life combat techniques. But only the VERY basic techniques are demonstrated (and even not so well demonstrated).

Please spend your money on more interesting jiu jitsu books than this one.

1-0 out of 5 stars God what dreck
In the martial arts genre there is no shortage of sillyness to deal with. When you aren't being annoyed with death touch this, and pressure point magic, you are getting garbage like this pretending to be something street effective.Every picture demonstrates that Leff and his collegues have no clue what real live punches, kicks, and take downs look like at all.His "defenses" betray this on every picture.THe pictures also betray the lack of skill he and his students have in even the most basic punches and kicks.
So technically the book just completely sucks. We also have a biography section to dismantle. This takes up a few pages at the begining of the book. Its just as silly as the rest of the book. What really gets the most laughs for me though, is numerous pictures of Norman Leff the young fighter.Almost all of them have the caption "at his fit fighting weight of 250."And what is so funny is just a big fat guy.No muscle tone at all.Just a big fat guy in a gi.Ridiculous.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent practical jiu jitsu book
Although brief, this is a very practical and useful book on jiu-jitsu by Mr. Leff, whose training has an interesting history. While a foreign language teacher in South America, he met a Japanese instuctor by the name of Tanaka who taught a very aggressive form of jiu-jitsu that was still not widely taught to the public. Mr. Leff became a student and eventually a master of this system. He also worked as a bouncer for many years in New York city, where he learned that what he had been taught worked in real life situations.

In this style of jiu jitsu, atemi waze or strikes and kicks are well integrated with the more typical throws and holds and locks. The chapter on "Fight Stoppers" shows this very well, which usually involve a more serious countering technique or blow combined with a hold or lock and/or takedown or throw. Other chapters shold holds and locks throws, and other techniques. The system is very self-defense oriented, which Leff mentions in the introduction was always a focus of his, and often his instructors didn't seem to emphasize it, especially the karate instructors, but also the judo and jiu jitsu ones as well.

Mr. Leff also has some very sage advice about not resorting to violent behavior unless you absolutely have to, as a result of the possible legal fees and fail time. Although you might feel justified in defending yourself, it's possible the courts might not see it that way. Also, he points out that going to the ground, which one hears so often these days, is a very dangerous piece of advice and should not be done under any circumstances unless one falls or trips, since placing yourself on the ground just insures that if the guy has any companions that they will kick or stomp you on the ground.

This is an excellent book on self-defense oriented jiu jitsu with many useful and practical techniques. My only complaint is that I would like to have seen even more of Mr. Leff's very practical and effective system and would like to see him do a book covering his complete system someday.

4-0 out of 5 stars MARTIAL ARTS LEGEND
HAVING READ THIS BOOK AS A MARTIAL ARTS PRACTICTIONER I FELT IT WAS AS DETAILED IN THE MANUEVERS AS A BOOK CAN BE. IT LEFT ME WISHING FOR A VIDEO TO SUPPLEMENT THE PICTURES. MASTER LEFF WENT BRIEFLY INTO THE HISTORY OF HIS JIU JITSU KNOWLEDGE AND BACKGROUND WHICH WAS INTERESTING, MORE OF THE FORTY YEARS OF MARTIAL ARTS TALES WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE. A LARGER, MORE DETAILED BOOK WOULD BE NICE, BUT IN COMPARISON OF THIS VERSES OTHER MORE EXPENSIVE BOOKS, I FOUND THIS BOOK COMPREHENSIVE, EASY TO FOLLOW, AND BASICALLY A GOOD MARTIAL ARTS GUIDE. I LOOK FOWARD TO A MORE DETAILED BOOK WITH POSSIBLY MORE OF THE HISTORY OF THIS DYNAMIC SYSTEM AS WELL AS STORIES OF HIS LIFE,( WHICH I'M SURE MUST BE INTERESTING WITH OVER 40 YEARS OF MARTIAL ARTS STORIES, ECT..) AS WELL AS MORE COMPLEX MOVES. OVERALL AN EXCELLENT BOOK FOR THE PRICE..........

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT SYSTEM OF SELF DEFENSE
NORM LEFF IS ONE OF THE MOST KNOWLEDGEABLE JIUJITSU INSTRUCTORS IN THE COUNTRY. THIS SIMPLISTIC YET STREET EFFECTIVE SYSTEM IS EASY TO LEARN. THE PHOTOS SHOW A LOT AND MUCH INFORMATION CAN BE GATHERED FROM THEM IF YOU HAVE THE SLIGHTEST MARTIAL ART INSIGHT. ... Read more

Kuntao Jiu-Jitsu is a reality-based martial arts system that is designed with one main objective: To teach you how to survive a life-threatening altercation. 5-0 out of 5 stars great martial arts book
I recomend this book to any one who is interested in learning to defend themselves or any martial artist looking to expand their arsenol of attacks.I am currently a Nidan(second degree black belt) and the techniques described in this book are very similar to the techniques taught in my system so I know from experience that they work. The techniques in this book are very simple to comprehend therefore I give this book a five star rating.

2-0 out of 5 stars Only For Those Who Know No Better!!! Bad!!!
If you are a newbie to the martial arts, or some rank-struck kid with dreams of being a master, than maybe this would be considered a good book. However, if you already have a library of MA books, or have already spent years in the arts, you will be wise to avoid the frustration of buying this one.
"Soke-dai" (another one of those new terms that never appeared in traditional usage) supposedly took from 8 different arts to create this new style. Yet, admittedly, he never directly studied all of 8 of these arts from instructors. So, how can he blend or teach what he never actually studied?
Each of the individual arts that this man mentions allows for the full spectrum of skills that he claims to have taken from all of them. Therefore, through his claims, he reveals that he knows little more than the basics of even the one style he has learned.
It was a nice try at scientific rationalization, but those of us know who know better (after years of training/ fighting) have found this to be a great disappointment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great all around
Although I have studied martial arts since being a child, I have never seen a style so practical as this. Many other styles I have studied under have focused on practicing meaningless forms and competing in tournaments that have no application to the real world. This book's focus is on surviving a fight on the street. Although it has copious techniques included, it also gives strategies for defusing a dangerous situation. All and all, it will help the novice learn basic self defense and the advanced martial artist in seeing martial arts in a new way. Great job!

4-0 out of 5 stars A student of Vee
I gave this book 4 Stars only because some basic Vee Jitsu concepts should have been included in this book!

Soke Bochner-my hat is off to you my friend!

This book is a great book to read for those who seek an eclectic view of Martial Arts and mixing systems to make something that is effective. The book pays homage to Grandmaster Florendo Visitacion better known as Prof. Vee-this man was one of America's Pioneer Leaders in the Martial Arts community. Prof. Vee truly developed a System of Systems. (Visitacion Arts)He was beyond his time by many years. It is refreshing to see his life's work presented thru the eyes of Soke Bochner. The book Kunato Jiu-Jitsu reflects just that and not taking away from Soke Bochner's hard work-training and writing this book.
This book gives you a taste of what taking bits from here and there do when combined into a street lethal and effective system of self-defense.Buy it, review it and put your mind to the test.Train hard, be safe and always act smart.OSU!!

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!!!
This book has given me the confidence that I could defend myself. Following along with the pictures made learning self defense easy. I am starting to feel safer walking around my dark college campus. Bochner includes so many different scenarios/techinques/concepts for surviving an altercation that I feel like noone will get the best of me again. This book does so much more then tell you how to hold your keys, it teaches you how to defend yourself with hand strikes, low kicks, Jiu Jitsu locking techniques, and all the "smart" strikes (groin strikes, throat strikes, eye gauging etc.). Myself (no prior training) and my friends (lots of martial arts training) all found this book on Kuntao Jiu Jitsu to be just great.I just cannot say enough good things about the explanations and pictures. Great book! I am buying it for my father and big sister for xmas. I highly recommend it to everyone. ... Read more
