Product Description
For the first time, the King of Portugal's 1438 treatise, LIVRO DA ENSINAN DE BEM CAVALGAR TODA SELA, will be available in English. Never before translated even into modern Portuguese, Antonio Franco Preto has delivered a superb rendition of this most important treatise. The ROYAL BOOK OF HORSEMANSHIP, JOUSTING & KNIGHTLY COMBAT is a chivalric treatise written by a renowned medieval king who was an expert in his subject matter. Superbly educated, the king wrote about fundamentals of medieval horsemanship--including specifics about clothing, shoes, saddles and tack--about the seat and riding securely in the saddle, details about the medieval hunt, about how to joust, including roles for the knight's assistants and squires, about different kinds of lances, about wrestling and fighting with the sword. More than this, the work is a chivalric treatise on the par with Geoffrey de Charny's Book of Chivalry or Ramon Lull's Book of Knighthood & Chivalry. Its minute examination of the human spirit, in all its glory and failings, is woven with consummate skill into the text. D. Duarte discusses the moment of impact, for example, lance against lance, and about different ways that men fail at the point of impact. This failure is then discussed in the context of life. This work is a prize of medieval literature and Portuguese history that has languished in obscurity owing to its difficulty. But Dom Duarte was considered to be one of the great kings of Portugal, and his work, dedicated to his wife, left Portugal with her as she departed for Naples with the king's death. When the French overran Naples in 1495, the book was transferred to the French National Library, which it remains today. Although several old editions have appeared in Portugal, they were in the original language and were extremely difficult. Antonio Franco Preto has now rendered this text not only accessible, but preserved its elegance as well. It will be an important book to many: students of chivalric literature, the equestrian arts, jousting, Western martial arts, or Portuguese history. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Teaching to ride well in every type of saddle
This book was written by the King Dom Duarte of Portugal in the early 15th century; a text that has long been overlooked by horse masters and scholars alike over the centuries. Usually when Duarte's work is mentioned, it is in brief and only covers a singular topic. Due to these limited translated excerpts, there is a common misconception in the community of interest that this book is just about jousting. I assure you, it is not.

Basically "Bem Cavalgar", a short hand term for the work, is a 15th century book of advice on or teaching how to ride in every type of saddle. Duarte speaks from his own experience about having a firm seat and to be well mounted when performing tasks from jousting to hunting and every day riding. He also covers the use of proper equipment for the specific task. Many modern equestrians may see bits of advice that come remarkably close to what they've been taught from their earliest riding lessons.

Duarte, like many rulers of his age, was philosophical, being well versed in mythology of the past and the religion of the day. Duarte covers many of these aspects in his own musing about "The Will" and why sometimes riders fail or succeed because of the types of will and desire employed in riding or other activities.

Amusingly enough, Duarte was very concerned about appearance and looking good while you were in the saddle. If one had an especially difficult horse, he explains how the rider could "disguise" the difficulty by straightening a hat or bit of clothing until the horse was under control so as not to appear unsafe or concerned about falling; style and elegance.

The book contains Duarte's advice and thoughts on weapon handling. His advice is sound regarding work from the ground before trying it from horseback. His belief that if you didn't feel safe and confident working with a weapon on the ground, you wouldn't be safe or confident with it on horseback. This follows the teachings of some of Duarte's contemporaries like Fiore di Liberi (Italian), whose system approaches the basics (wrestling and weapons) from the ground and eventually teaches the student to use the combat techniques from horseback a skill that Duarte laments later in his text that the young noblemen seem to be losing due to their pursuit of the ladies and courtly romance.

Martial techniques that are discussed in whole or briefly: work with the lance, the sword, and wrestling. Probably not as detailed as most students of historical western martial arts would like, but those experienced in equestrian martial sport will probably realize that much of it is common sense and practices that many of us have been doing for years.

In comparison to other works on the horsemanship of antiquity, Duarte is at times sketchy about details and without images for guidance; the reader is left to draw their own conclusions in regard to visualizing how certain movements are performed.

About the translation (adaptation as it is not a literal translation), I've been studying the work by Joseph Piel (he transcribed the manuscript into a more "readable" document) for years and know what a difficult and monumental task "Bem Cavalgar" was to translate. Mr. Preto has done a commendable job in bringing this difficult work to English, in full, for the first time. He has also added a bit of information to the beginning of the book to share a chronicler's description of Duarte and share the history of Portugal with the reader to add a bit of context to Duarte's work. (Obrigado)

While I have the highest regard for the content of the book and the effort it took to bring it to the masses, as a bibliophile and a design professional, I must now share my concerns regarding the presentation of this work.

In comparison to other works on horsemanship that offer a modern translation, I found the work to be missing two key components, a facsimile of the original manuscript or a text version of same and/or contemporary artwork to add visual breaks for the eye. While this may not seem to be an issue with most readers, for a scholar, it doesn't allow for comparison of the translation with the work. Sometimes errors occur and without a source to for comparison, you will never know.

When I was finally able to hold the book in my hands, my first impression was the disappointment I felt with the low quality of the binding and the flimsy paper stock. The faux leather had air bubbles under it where the glue didn't adhere or didn't cover the boards. The gold leaf text was practically illegible (same for the dust jacket). The whole thing would probably have been better served by a cloth cover and a regular serif font for readability rather than trying to mimic a manuscript.

A major issue was that before I had even finished my first reading, the binding had come unglued and the end papers had begun to separate from the cover. I have purchased several books over the years in the same price range and have never had this happen. The watch phrase is "handle with care" when reading to avoid damage to the book.

Advice to the publisher: Quality Control.

Having said that, I am pleased to see the work finally come to light as the information is more important than the binding. So, if you are a medieval horsemanship enthusiast or interested in the knightly arts even if you don't have a horse, I definitely recommend that this book be a part of your equestrian and medieval studies library. I would also make an attempt, if you have any foreign language skills (Latin, Portuguese, Arabic, etc...), that you also acquire a copy of Joseph Piel's transcription:

LIVRO DA ENSINANÇA DE BEM CAVALGAR TODA SELA EL-REY DOM EDUARTE

(it's extremely rare) and/or the French study:

"Étude d'un traité d'équitation portugais du XVème siècle:Livro da ensinança de bem cavalgar toda sela du roi Dom Duarte" by Carlos-Henriques Periera, (2001).

Note: I've edited this review to add the book titles and to add the term adaptation.

NOTE: there are translation errors.

4-0 out of 5 stars Important work
This is a very valuable and important work for anyone interested in historical horsemanship; especialy jousting. It is a great pitty that this book is so poorly produced (esp for the money!) & the binding is particularly bad (otherwise this is a 5 star book). Those who want it will still buy it however as it is the only English translation published that I know of. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An ABC for the Younger Dragon
This is a dandy little book - it follows a young dragon from his birth through to getting his flame, his wings, and his place in life. Little Dennis pops out of the egg and then travels on a quest though a magical medieval English landscape - a trip that also takes him through the seasons and the alphabet.

The metaphor of acquiring knowledge, skill and growth as he travels through the letters A to Z may not be "got" by the young reader but it's a sure a nice subtext that parents or grandparents can appreciate as they read to their own little ones. Like Peter Pan and Wind in the Willows it's got 2 levels - one for the adults, one for the kids. I found the kids really liked the colourful and detailedillustrations and loved searching for the items in each picture that begin with the letter they're on (I did too!), and of course there's always the "bad guy" to find peeping out. Makes learning fun. Clever alliterations. Who knew you had to Manage Magicians with Marmalade?

5-0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Kids @ Teens Read Too
What a wonderful book! My kids absolutely loved it, and I have to say I'm quite partial to it myself. This is the A-Z story of Dennis the Dragon, and his quest to find his flame and return to Castle Yarrow as a full-grown, fire-breathing dragon.

From "Avoid aunties armed with arrows" to "As Auntie always says, 'Zoom with Zest!'," this is an alphabet-filled picture book with amazing illustrations and entertaining anecdotes.

As a bonus, kids can search each page for objects that begin with the letter of that particular page's storyline.

A great bedtime book, or one for anytime!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Fantasy is Hard to Find =)
I am a sucker for a good fantasy story and this one does not disappoint. A warrior's delight with flashing swordplay, powerful magic, and clashing armies decorate the pages in high style. The tale is well written and delivers interesting characters that will draw you in. I definitely recommend this book. =)

4-0 out of 5 stars Medieval Adventure and Sorcery
Thousands of years ago, elves and humans co-existed peacefully. But as time marched forward, the occasionally coupling of both species produced a halfling progeny. These halflings enjoyed the extended life and magical powers of elves but also the more violent lust for power from their human half.Elfin kind existence was threatened and in a bold move, it was determined the only way to eliminate the halfling threat was to eradicate all magic and disenchant all elves and halflings.Four talisman's were created to house their magic as it could not be destroyed.Unfortunately, the spell that removed the elves magic did not eliminate the halflings' capabilities.Equally unfortunate was only the halflings could use and harness the power of the talismans.

One of these same talisman's was used to create the first FireDrake - a melding of a dragon and elf.FireDrakes were magical creatures with high intellect, practically indestructible, and imbued with magical capabilities. However, because they were created by a talisman, they were also under it's complete control. Those who control the FireDrakes could rule over all.Intent on doing just that, the evil sorcerer-emperor Gamel manipulates a young halfling sorceress in possession of such a talisman.Learning of such a plan, a small band of Damon Knights set about to save their kingdom. They face incredible odds against an imperial army, witchcraft, were-beasts, FireDrakes, and the evil sorcerers.

David Korinetz's FireDrakes is an entertaining, face-paced novel of medieval knights and sorcery.Korinetz creates a detailed a fascinating world with carefully crafted descriptions of the peoples and places in this fabled empire. The characters have great depth and stay true to themselves as the story evolves.Furthermore, Korinetz creates plausible scenarios where a small group of relatively powerless knights are able to overcome unbelievable odds and obstacles on their march to confront the sorceress.Creating such a plausible plot is a difficult task for even a seasoned writer and in his debut novel Korinetz pulls this off masterfully.I especially enjoyed the sections in the novel involving the history of the elves, the use of magic, and the evil witch's creation of the were-beasts.I so hoped I would read the transformation from a human to such a beast and Korinetz delivered!

The ending chapters provide a good climax and close to most story arcs but leave room for future installments without frustrating the reader.FireDrakes is an enjoyable read and fans of this genre will not be disappointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Review for Fire Drakes
After reading an interesting book by Cornelia Funke calledDragon Rider, I started searching the internet for more books on the topic of dragons. ThenI saw FireDrakes by David Korinetz. "First book, new author" I thought "why not give it a try?" In my experience of reading books I discovered that very often newauthors have fresh ideas with interesting twists, therefore my intuition told me to buy that book. I did order and I was amazed how it was so pleasant to read from the first page to the last.It was just perfect, and the fantasy world in that book was great. If the second one would be as good as this one, I'm hooked to that series for sure. Reading that book was like watching a movie.
I do recommend that book to all. It is well spent time reading "FireDrakes". Once and all - it was a very interesting creative read. I look forward to read his second book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Inventive Quest - Needs a LOT of Editing
The legendary Daemon Knights, though few in number, may be the key to preventing Emperor Gamel from conquering the known world.Wizard Aldus believes that the Daemon Knights may be able to conduct a secret mission that will stymie Emperor Gamel's ambitions, if they are careful enough and brave enough.Key to the success or failure of the mission will be the legendary firedrakes; powerful flying reptiles with the ability to breathe fire.

The men chosen to be part of the mission are brave and among the finest of Daemon Knights.Foremost among these men are their leader, Silas, and young Sir Rodney, yet to see his first war. There are many others. Most will leave behind loved ones: fathers, mothers, wives, sisters, brothers, girlfriends and more.We will come to learn much about these brave men, whose goal is to travel to a far off land they have never seen on the slim chance that they can stop the ambitions of an emperor.

The men board ships with their armor, horses, weapons and squires and leave their island for the distant mainland.Once on the mainland, they soon realize that they are in a dangerous place far from home.Emperor Gamel is already on the move, preparing to threaten the Kingdom of Icarus.Silas and his men accidentally become involved in the first battle between Gamel and the Kingdom of Icarus. What can a handful of Daemon Knights do in a battle involving thousands of men?Perhaps more than it would first seem, given that the Daemon Knights are highly trained and ride huge horses.Indeed, the success of the Daemon Knights may yet swing the war one way or the other.

What of the sorceress Magdalen? She controls the FireDrakes with a magical amulet and has access to an incredible library of knowledge. The only chance the Daemon Knights have lies with the arrogance of Magdalen and the power and knowledge of Wizard Aldus. The tension rises as Rodney and his men get closer to Drakenmount and Penardun and the confrontation that will decide the fate of the world.

I liked most of this story.Author David Korinetz included creative little touches that I am sure he is going to exploit further in future novels about the Daemon Knights. He has established many characteristics of the FireDrakes. He has explained some things about Magdalen's library.Korinetz has given the Daemon Knights a history, including how they arrived on the island of Balor. There is a lot of material that Korinetz should be able to explore in future stories. These things are some of the many good things about this book. Some things are derivative, but then again, little is not derivative to some extent.

Now, with all the good things I have said about this book, you would think I would give this novel an unequivocal recommendation.I wish I could. The problem is not the story, which I enjoyed. The problem is not Korinetz's writing, which I thought was generally fine. The problem is the atrocious editing.I could provide additional descriptions of the editing, but only at the risk of succumbing to hyperbole.Let me give some examples, instead.

How about "vile" in place of "vial"?Several times Korinetz uses "though" instead of "thought," and vice versa. If those were the only errors, I could forgive them. However, there are many, many more errors.I randomly opened the book to page 163 and started reading. On page 164, I came across the beginning of this sentence:"Closing tired eyes, he wrapping his arms around his legs..."The number of grammatical problems in this book is so significant that my reading was often interrupted by trying to figure out what Korinetz meant, or by laughing.

My recommendation to Korinetz is to hire a good editor and have his editor fix his book before the next printing. My recommendation to a reader?Well, I did enjoy this book.I thought it was creative and interesting, and I think Korinetz has a lot of potential. You may be getting a book from an author who is going to become popular in a few years with his Daemon Knight books. However, you will have to ignore misspelled words, extraneous punctuation, and incorrect verb tenses, among other problems, to get to the end of the book. You will have to decide for yourself whether you want to wade through the problems to enjoy the story or whether you want to wait until the problems are fixed.Either way, good luck!

David Korinetz wrote an interesting fantasy novel that I would rate four stars but for the spelling and punctuation errors.I have to subtract one star because of those problems.I think Korinetz is a great idea man looking for an editor.Given the chance, I think he could create well-written stories that will appeal to fantasy readers looking for a new mythology.I am looking forward to his future success.

This review is based on a copy of the book provided to me by the author.

Good luck!

Excerpt: Jousting in its basic form is a martial contest between two knights mounted on horses and using lances. It can also consist of a series of competitions using a variety of weapons, usually in sets of three per weapon (such as tilting with a lance, blows with the battle axe, strokes with the dagger, or strokes with a sword), often as part of a tournament. Jousting was one of many types of martial games in the Middle Ages. These games, requiring great skill, were referred to generically as hastiludes. Though the first recorded tournament was staged in 1066, jousting itself did not gain in widespread popularity until the 12th century. It maintained its status as a popular European sport until the early 17th century. Jousting was added to tournaments several centuries after their inauguration. The joust permitted a better display of individual skill and, although dangerous, offered large sums of prize money. Many knights made their fortune in these events, whilst many lost their fortune or even life. For example, Henry II of France died when his opponent's lance went through his visor and shattered into fragments, blinding his right eye and penetrating his right orbit and temple. Depiction of a late 13th century joust in the Codex Manesse The skills used in tournaments were a reflection of the martial skills applied to battle where the primary purpose was to try to kill or disable an opponent. The primary purpose of the jousting lance is to unhorse the other by striking them with the end of the lance while riding towards them at high speed. This is known as "tilting". Excerpt: A Renaissance fair, Renaissance faire, or Renaissance festival is an outdoor weekend gathering, usually held in the United States, open to the public and typically commercial in nature, which emulates a historic period for the amusement of its guests. Some are permanent theme parks, others are short-term events in fairgrounds or other large public or private spaces. Renaissance fairs generally include an abundance of costumed entertainers, musical and theatrical acts, art and handicrafts for sale, and festival food. Some even offer camping, for those who wish to stay more than one day. Most Renaissance fairs are set during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I of England. Some are set earlier, during the reign of Henry VIII, or in other countries, such as France, and some include broader definitions of the Renaissance which include earlier periods, such as the Vikings, or later, such as 18th Century pirates, and some engage in deliberate "time travel" by encouraging participants to wear costumes representing several eras in a broad time period. Renaissance fairs encourage visitors to enter into the spirit of things with costumes and audience participation. Most tolerate, and many welcome, fantasy elements such as wizards and elves. Chicago journalist Neil Steinberg said (of the Bristol Renaissance Faire), "If theme parks, with their pasteboard main streets, reek of a bland, safe, homogenized, whitebread America, the Renaissance Faire is at the other end of the social spectrum, a whiff of the occult, a flash of d... From the author: Bruce Davie was the authority on the economics of state and local bonds whose interest income is excluded from federal income taxation (by section 103 of the Internal Revenue Code). Beginning with his dissertation in 1963 and continuing to his untimely death in 2003, he accumulated vast knowledge about tax-exempt bonds. That knowledge was put to excellent use during his time at the House Ways and Means Committee from 1979 through the late 1980s. He played the critical role in writing sections 141 through 150 of the Code, the sections that determine what state and local issuers are permitted to do by section 103. His efforts focused on minimizing the federal subsidy's economic distortions and maximizing its social benefits.

Product Description
Ever need a fact or quotation on "jousting"? Designed for speechwriters, journalists, writers, researchers, students, professors, teachers, historians, academics, scrapbookers, trivia buffs and word lovers, this is the largest book ever created for this word. It represents a compilation of "single sentences" and/or "short paragraphs" from a variety of sources with a linguistic emphasis on anything relating to the term "jousting," including non-conventional usage and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities. This is not an encyclopedic book, but rather a collage of statements made using the word "jousting," or related words (e.g. inflections, synonyms or antonyms). This title is one of a series of books that considers all major vocabulary words. The entries in each book cover all parts of speech (noun, verb, adverb or adjective usage) as well as use in modern slang, pop culture, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This data dump results in many unexpected examples for "jousting," since the editorial decision to include or exclude terms is purely a computer-generated linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under fair use conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Excerpt: The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) is an international living history group with the aim of studying and recreating mainly Medieval European cultures and their histories before the 17th century. A quip often used within the SCA describes it as a group devoted to the Middle Ages "as they ought to have been", choosing to "selectively recreate the culture, choosing elements of the culture that interest and attract us". Founded in 1966, the society had about 32,000 members as of 2008 . The SCA's roots can be traced to a backyard graduation party of a UC Berkeley medieval studies graduate, the author Diana Paxson, in Berkeley, California, on May Day in 1966. The party began with a "Grand Tournament" in which the participants wore motorcycle helmets, fencing masks, and usually some semblance of a costume, and whacked away at each other with weapons including plywood swords, padded maces, and even a fencing foil. It ended with a parade down Telegraph Avenue with everyone singing "Greensleeves". It was styled as a "protest against the 20th century". The SCA still measures dates within the society from the date of that party, calling the system Anno Societatis (La...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=28981 ... Read more
