4-0 out of 5 stars Them's fighting words
This book recognises the need for the professional to understand the dynamics that opperate when communicating in challenging situations.
This book provides practical advice as well as insights into the mental state required to achieve optimum outcomes. Anyone that must engage with potentially difficult people on a daily basis will appreciate the information in this book but it also has broader appeal such that the knowledge wouldhave benefits for
anyone wishing to improve their communication skills.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST-READ!
Verbal Judo is not only a MUST for anyone in Law Enforcement, Public Safety or Security, but a potential life saver for just about anyone. It has been a favorite of mine for a while now.Written in very plain understandable language, the tactics are laid out in a very easy to follow manner. The "do's and don't's" of Verbal Judo are VERY easy to remember, and after you read this book (or, better yet, take a course), the right words will magically pop out of your mouth at the proper time.I have personally found this method to be the fastest method of de-escalating conflict and gaining control over situations without the use of physical force. The book is easy to read and the simple logic behind the principles makes perfect sense.Subject matter is broken down in a way that makes it easy to follow, and even if you are not a "reader", you will enjoy this.

5-0 out of 5 stars a must read for every law enforcement officer & anyone else
book provides outstanding methods of how to deal with difficult people in stressful situations. I've used the techniques as a law enforcement supervisor and the officers were quite impressed that I was able to talk an erratic behaving person into compliance without ever using physical force. The guidelines in the book apply to anyone that has ever been exposed to a difficult and dangerous confrontation with other people. You just follow the guidelines and make them apply to your specific situation.
sgt t. short

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
An all around entretaining book. I just did not like the law enforcement example

5-0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING AND EFFECTIVE!
The book is very good however, if you have a chance to take the course, don't miss it!I have been a certified Verbal Judo instructor for over 9 years and it has literally changed my life for the better in every area... and I mean that! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not earth-shaking . . .
This is a 46-page introductory book for kids. There is nothing earth-shaking in it.This might still be a good book to show children who are curious about judo.

For young students, I recommend the Janicot book (See my other reviews, or just search "Janicot Judo.")

5-0 out of 5 stars Breakout of the judo mental box
This was the start of NEW THINKING about how AMERICANS should be learning judo.We don`t have adopt SHINTO rituals to learn a simple wrestling sport. When AMERICAN judo athletes come to understand this maybe than the USA judo will go from LAST PLACE to FIRST PLACE in WORLD ratings.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lifetime of experience put into a practical book.
My three boys were in judo for three years, learning unsafe and impractical skills under three different instructors. One of my boys lost every match he was in and both my parents and my in-laws were telling me to get him out of judo to save his self-esteem.

Then, about three years ago, I met Coach John Holm, the author of this book.My boys started training with him at the U.S. Judo Training Center in Renton, Washington, and now they are all current Washington State champions.I encourage any parent of a student of judo to check out this simple book.Note not only the skills that are taught, but what is omitted: Shinto rituals of bowing to mats, altars, and pictures of the dead founder of judo, and unsafe or impractical skills common to almost all judo instruction across the country.

Coach Holm has put years of practical instruction into this book, suitable for American students who want to learn judo, but not the Shinto religion. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Gets you thinking . . .
I have to give it four stars for getting my judo-related brain cells going. His book "Judo Games" has had more direct impact on my teaching, though.

The teaching approach he advocates/advocated in this book is/was to teach entry-level students generic throws to begin with, to get them used to relevant movement & principles. For example, the first throw looks something like a tai-otoshi/uki-goshi hybrid. The basic foot throws he shows are more recognizable as specific throws.

As a kid, I started with the usual: Ogoshi, Osoto-gari,& Seoinage, and it's hard to "change my spots." But Gleeson's approach is logical. Definitely worth a read.

(PS: In newaza, I started with kesa; Gleeson doesn't like kesa.) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Judo's 2nd Best Known Technique
Due to it's use in movies, television and comic books(Captain America succesfully used it against the incredible Hulk in their first meeting)the tome-nage is after the ippon seo-nage probally judo's best known technique. This sacrifice throw also perfectly illustrates judo's principle of using an opponent's own strength against them.Like most of the books from the Masterclass series this one concentrates on a single technique and teaches you all you would need to know about this maneuver to master it if you're already practicing judo.Because you can't learn judo from a book no matter how well written and illustrated it is.You have to practice randori.Like all the books from the Masterclass series this one written by Katsuhiko Kashiwazaki is highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best judo book money can buy.
great master, great book , i have a lots of judo ,bjj books but this one is diferent not only for techniques self defence and tips for competition . This book talk about most important component of any martial art the way of life a very few books write about that. all colour, beatiful pictures, all the techniques complete, amazing book.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a good book for people new to Judo
I found this book to be a good introduction to Judo.It touches on a lot of topics like the history of Judo, what Judo is, how it works, self defense, sport, personal development, theory, and techniques. That's a lot to try to pack into one book but Mr. Ohlenkamp did a good job and has put together a book that he can be proud of.

Pros: The book is very well laid out in a neat, organized manner. It's printed on high quality paper which makes the book easy to read and visually appealing. It goes over the official 67 throws that are recognized by the Kodokan and some of the moves have variations to help you out when you can't get a technique to work in the traditional way.Along with each move there is a little diagram that shows the ending position for your feet which helps in the understanding how to perform each technique. The part I found the most valuable is the Appendices. This section does many things; it translates the Japanese words for easier understanding. It goes over and explains sport rules and scoring. The appendix tells you which moves are recognized by the Kodokan and Judo Federation.Last but not least is my favorite part.It has a chart that tells you which moves are good to set up other moves and a follow up attack in case you miss the technique you were going for along with the most used counters to each move.As a beginner Judoka, I'm finding the appendix section of the book very helpful.

Cons: Often the moves are described in about 3 pictures with a paragraph explaining the whole move.I felt this made it hard to tell when to apply the details within the move and sometimes it was hard to tell what was going on in the pictures. The Grappling section I found very weak. The book only had one picture per move and that was the ending position without any explanation of how to set it up or the mechanics of the move.I felt this section could have been skipped and I wouldn't have missed anything. The only other thing that I didn't care for in this book was that at times Neil gets a little long winded but that can also be a good thing depending on who's reading it.

I'm keeping this book around as I found it to be a good reference book for my Judo needs.Overall, I felt this was a good book with a lot to offer people that are new to intermediate in Judo but it might be just the same old stuff or people that have been in the sport for a long time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for starting out.
Unleashed is an overrated word, nothing too technically difficult. I'm new in Judo, but not to martial arts and grappling. I found the breakdown of the basics very helpful and the fundamentals are well explained also, coupled with the excellent pictures the book is a must have for any martial artist. So even though its not "unleashed" I still give it a full 5 stars for its content.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Judo techniques out there!
What a fantastic introduction to Judo. I have been doing jiu jitsu for 3 years now and I was hoping to increase my throwing knowledge, oh boy is this book a gold mine!!! I highly recommend this book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as billed...
This is simply not a book for advanced judoka, and likely will be old hat to the intermediates. While this text is probably one of the most visually appealing in terms of photos and layouts, many of the photos are simply fluff (tomoe-nage in the surf?Seriously?)The treatment of the various techniques is no more advanced than good ol' Kodokan Judo, and sometimes less so.I guess from the title (and the reputation of the author) I was expecting something more along the lines of the Masterclass series, not another rehash of the basics. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
Throughout the long history of Japan's martial traditions, judo has evolved into one of the nation's richest and most revered cultural legacies. The vast array of judo techniques has branched out into three distinct categories: throwing techniques, grappling techniques, and striking techniques. Of these, throwing techniques (nage-waza) represent some of the most dynamic and compelling aspects of this world-famous martial art.

Recent developments in competition (shiai) and free practice (randori) have seen an increase in the number of forms of nage-waza, leading to often confusing interpretations of the techniques' names. The purpose of this book, therefore, is to provide a comprehensive and correct classification of nage-waza terminology as used in both competition and practice. All the sixty-seven official Kodokan throwing techniques and their various forms are explained thoroughly and concisely, and over 1,800 photographs accompany the text to provide the reader with the most comprehensive guide to judo's throwing forms to date.

For many years author Toshiro Daigo has held the prestigious position of chief instructor at the Kodokan, regarded as the mecca for all judo enthusiasts, and this book is the result of painstaking research into the constantly changing forms of judo's nage-waza. It will be an invaluable resource for practitioners everywhere. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Judo Techniques
Very good technical book on Judo and it's practice.Beginners and Instructors can learn from this book.Very well written with good photos.

4-0 out of 5 stars Kodokan Judo Throwing Techniques...
This book is probably the most detailed I've read on Nage-Waza. As with all of the Kodansha publications, the quality is top notch also. Now, I'm not a judoka, I actually train in the Bujinkan and submission wrestling. I wanted a concise volume of throws as a go-to for minute details. Judo throws are applicable to many arts as theyrely on principles instead of style... by that, I mean a hip throw will generally be similar from style to style, with variations being gi, no gi, weapons etc. This book addresses each throw from multiple set ups and includes all variations as accepted by the Kodokan, and importantly (I believe) covers the 'lineage' of most of the techniques from koryu budo, to Kodokan Judo.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, not for beginners
I find this book incredibly accurate. I've never seen such a deep technique analysis. I'm not a beginner, and I think this book aim to experienced people in Judo issues. Each technique is shown in several different angles and opportunities with very clear pictures. A must have item for Judokas!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!!
The book is a grea resource for any wanting help with this form of Judo. This book came exactly as they said it would.

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolutely essential reference
Of all the books available on Judo today, this book is the most up-to-date and more complete reference work on Judo throwing techniques. Not only does it cover all the throws, but it covers the modern variations of the throws.

The book is clearly written and provides more than enough pictures to show what it is the authors are talking about. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars MEIJN JUDO - My Judo! The future of Matwork in Judo.
In his first of three books, the 135 page MY CHAMPIONSHIP JUDO (c. 1966) by Antonius Johannes Geesink, 7th Dan (now 10th dan) gave a brief biography of how the left-handed fourteen year old stepped on the Judo mat for the first time prior to becoming the Dutch champion twenty-one times; European champion twenty-times; the 1961 World Champion in Paris and the 1965 World Champion in Sao Paulo; and the 1964 Olympic gold medal Judo champion. The author also described sagaciously how he learned to suffer defeats - and in learning from those defeats how to win.

The book: MY CHAMPIONSHIP JUDO (actually MEIJN JUDO 'My Judo') marked the conclusion of Anton Geesink's illustrious competitive career and the first to espouse the importance of Ne-waza (matwork) in competition Judo, and to render thanks to his great Judo teacher Matsumoto Sensei.

MY CHAMPIONSHIP JUDO presented Anton Geesink's Tokui-waza, or "the techniques which I thought the most important for the building up of my contest arsenal; from 'Tsuri-Komi-Goshi, ... to Sankaku-waza, the triangle techniques, which occupy such an important place in my ground work (p.9).And with this book Anton Geesink became 7th Dan.

The left-handed, 6'1" 260 lb Judo champion Anton Geesink made several trips to Tenri University to perfect his Tokui-waza: Osoto-Gari; Sasae Tsuri Komi Ashi; Uchi-Mata; Mune-Gatame; Kesa-Gatame; Sankaku Tate Shiho Gatame; Sankaku-Ude-Kansetsu-Waza; and Ude-Hishigi (a straight arm ude garami). He used Osoto Gari against the Frenchman Courtine in the 1956 World Championships; he used the renraku waza Sasaei Tsuri Komi Ashi to Mune Gatam against the Japanese Sone to win the 1961 World Championships then Uchimata to beat Koga in the same championship; and Kesa-Gatame against Kaminaga to win the gold in the '64 Olympics.

Anton Geesink noted in this 1964 work that "Every Judoka begins by practicing Tachi-Waza, standing techniques, but he should know that the training of the contest Judoka who wishes to be successful must be 60 per cent Ne-waza, and only 40 per cent Tachi-waza (p.62) and started the mat-work 'grappling' craze which dominated Judo competition in the 1970s and beyond."For myself" revealed the Sensei Geesink, "I preferably start my ground techniques with Kesa-gatame (scarf holding), because from this basic technique many strangulations, arm-locks, or immobilising holds may logically ensue" (p.63).

MY CHAMPIONSHIP JUDO is an important 1964 work which initiated the 'grappling craze' of newaza Judo through the 1970s, 1980s, and into the 21st century. Please read this book along with NEWAZA and GO-KYO by Anton Geesink. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Combat Judo oriented Modern Judo -- or Vice Versa +++
This work was first printed by "The Military Service Publishing Company" [later "The Stackpole Company"] via three book hardcover [like mine] or softcover series. "Modern Judo" remained in print for quite a number of years -- as "Modern Judo" has been quietly valued by folks with a Combat Judo approach to survival self-defense Jiu Jitsu. It shows just how earlier Classic Judo [also adapted by Krav Maga] can be a primary basis for PROVEN survival self-defense. There are other Arts blended-in -- Combat Savate, Boxing and some RARE [Savate] Vigny-influenced Canework [all also adapted by Krav Maga] -- as well as some general Hand-to-Hand Combatives. The whole series does have large sections on Classic Judo -- but at least the real self-defense pros and cons of such Classic Judo ARE carefully explained by the Combat Judo oriented author -- Charles Yerkow -- who presents Combat Judo oriented Modern Judo via intensely systematic and clearly illustrated methodical explanation. So it is great that Kessinger Publications has rescued this Gem via their one book hardcover and softcover reprints. As an example of the orientation of this work -- I quote from the start of Volumn 1 "Basic", Chapter 7 "Science of Self-Defense" +++

"THE MOVES THAT FOLLOW are the same ones used by law officers and government agents throughout the world. These moves have proved to be simple and scientific, enabling anyone to free himself from the grips and holds of the most powerful person. It is a matter of simple logic that you cannot be defeated if you have a perfect defense.

Some of the moves to be explained here aim at a direct ESCAPE OR BREAK-AWAY, while other moves reverse the tables against your antagonist and END IN A COUNTERATTACK."
