3-0 out of 5 stars A reasonable attempt at explaining the complexities of Kendo
I pestered my local library to replace its lost copy of this book, therebydoubling its library of kendo books to two. However, I cannot get enthusedabout this work and it does not compete well with, or complement the textof, 'This is Kendo' for example. Ok, it is a reasonable overview of thesport but I find its layout, grammar, method and diagrams confusing. Isincerely doubt the ability of any reader to pick up this book and to beable to go off and 'do' kendo. Perhaps kendo, like many martial arts andsports, defies the printed word the ability to adequately convey itsessence, speed, vitality and books like this one make it all look so verydull. Kendo is an exciting, vibrant sport and this book does little to passthat on to the reader. If you want to learn or sample kendo, go to yournearest dojo! I have been a kendoka for twenty years, my daughter less than6 months- neither of us were inspired (although the epilogue does providethe best part of the book!). ... Read more

Excerpt: Kendo kend), meaning "Way of the Sword", is a modern Japanese martial art of sword-fighting based on traditional Japanese swordsmanship, or Kenjutsu. Kendo is a physically and mentally challenging activity that combines strong martial arts values with sport-like physical elements. Practitioners of kendo are called kendka ), meaning "one who practices kendo", or occasionally kenshi ), meaning "swordsman". There are estimates that about six million people world-wide practice Kendo, with approximately four million in Japan, one million in Korea, and more in Europe, North America, South America and other countries of Asia. The "Kodansha Meibo" (a register of dan graded members of the All Japan Kendo Federation) shows that as of September 2007, there were 1.48 million registered dan graded kendoka in Japan. Product Description
Kenjutsu, meaning "the art of the sword": is a term for classical Japanese sword arts (or kory?), in particular those which predate the Meiji Restoration. It is sometimes used more generally to describe any martial art which makes use of the Japanese sword. The exact activities undertaken when practising kenjutsu vary with school, but commonly include practice of basic techniques (kihon) without opponent and techniques where two persons paired kata (featuring full contact strikes in some styles). Historically schools incorporated sparring under a variety of conditions, from using solid wooden bokut? to use of bamboo sword (shinai) and armor (bogu). In modern times sparring in Japanese swordsmanship is more strongly associated with Kendo. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars NBA basketball basics by mark vancil
Wonderful book for youngsters and coachs. Clear list of basketball practice principles, drills and plays with color pictures. It also appeals to youngsters by knowing the superstars of NBA, but this book is way too old 1995. Look forward to having a new revision.

Dear reader,
I a read a book called Basketball Basics by Mark Vancil. I liked this book because it gives the steps on how to shout, dribble, and pass. It also gives some drills to practise at home. I give this book 4 stars because it's a good learner book, but it only has 124 pages. So if you are a beginner, this is the book for you! ... Read more
