Book Description

The story of the invincible Silver Arrows is an enduring legend, but who remembers that in the 1930s the cars racing under this famous name were massively promoted by the Nazis?

Radio and TV journalist Eberhard Reuss paints a unique and richly illustrated portrait of the beginnings of German motor racing. Stripping away the myths that surround Hitlers race-track battles, he reveals the deep involvement of the motor industry and its top sportsmen with the Nazi regime.

Book Description

It took one visit as a tyke in the '20s to the Brooklands Motor Course for William Boddy to get hooked. It had been built in 1907 by a wealthy landowner and featured motor racing and motor-industry testing through to 1939, when World War II interrupted its glorious history and brought the sport - and the course - to a halt. For over 50 years, Boddy would edit the magazine Motor Sport, forever keeping Brooklands and racing in his heart. So moved by the motor course, Boddy wrote its definitive history that had been long out of print, until now.

Book Description

Re-issue of an award-winning book which has been described as the most comprehensively researched and written history ever produced of a Formula 1 racing team. Doug Nye is the world's most respected author and researcher on the historic racing scene and Tony Rudd's distinguished motor industry career included many years as BRM designer and chief engineer. Little wonder, then, that their first volume of BRM v the Saga of British Racing Motors was hailed as the most detailed and authoritative history of a grand prix team ever published. It covers the tortured birth of BRM, and takes readers through the years of the troublesome V16 cars and the 4-cylinder 2.5-litre models of the 1950s. Having unique access to the BRM company files, the authors have delved deeply into the emotion-charged background to the BRM team's creation, its near-collapse and then its troubled survival prior to its final emergence as a front-running Grand Prix team. The team's creator Raymond Mays and its great benefactor Sir Alfred Owen, as well as drivers like Stirling Moss, Juan Manuel Fangio, Froilan Gonzales, Tony Brooks, Jo Bonnier and many other stars of the past all figure prominently in this remarkable motor racing saga.

5-0 out of 5 stars The long-awaited early history of BRM Racing Cars.
From the pre-WWII beginnings with ERA cars, Doug Nye traces the development of the enigmatic and sometimes successful BRM racing cars.Starting with the incredible 1.5 liter V-16 of the early 50's to the 2.5 liter 4 cylinder cars that followed, Mr. Nye produces an accurate and well refrenced account of the behind-the-scenes effort along with a detailed run-down of each competitive event that BRM entered during the "front-engine" period. We are treated to many first-hand accounts from Mr. Tony Rudd who joined the team during the early days as a develoment engineer.Of special interest are his descriptions of the many technical investigations into the failures of the early V-16 engine, and the theoritical and experimental efforts to understand handling and braking problems during a period when much of the engineering was "seat-of-the-pants". This book is very worthwhile for the avid BRM watcher, and I eagerly await the second volume. In fact, if anyone knows the publication date of the next volume, please let me know ... Read more

Book Description
Penske, Shelby, Hall, Gurney, Hill, Ginther, Reventlow, Miles, Cunningham, Krause-these are the men who dominated sports car racing in North America at the start of the 1958 racing season. For the next 16 years, the cars became progressively faster, the competition hotter, and the stakes higher. But what was it really like to thread a factory-sponsored Porsche 917 or Ferrari 512 through the corkscrew at Riverside or to tromp the brake on a factory McLaren at the last possible deep spot of the Canadian Corner at Road America? Few are fortunate to know first-hand, but for the rest, Dave Friedman's photography straps you in the driver's seat. More than 300 photos, many in color, relive the fastest, hottest, most intense racing in American history. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good...but not great
As others have mentioned, the photos are great. They do a great job of showing the state and conditions of sports car racing at the time. So if the photos are great, why only three stars?

Because the content beyond that is really light. I'm too young to have seen these cars the first time(36 now) but have seen many of them at vintage events. While pictures of a field full of three different types of Lotus are enjoyable to look at, there's no explanation as to what makes them different. The same is true for all the marques. Also missing is much detail from or about the drivers and teams.

Finally, the book has a decided West Coast bias. I've been to Road Atlanta several times and live a short drive from Road America but found few photos from either of these tracks.

It's not bad, but you'll need some other reference material to fill in the dead air around the great images.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pro Sports Car Racing in America 1958-1974
If you like pictures that show everything about the racing scene in the early 60's Dave has captured the scene. Great photography.

2-0 out of 5 stars Pro Sports Car Racing in America, 1958/1974
Some really good photographs and, at times a good account of the object of same. ABSOLUTELY lacking of what races where run at what time and all of the accompaning data that you would, and have come to expect from a book such as as this.

As such, if you try to correlate the data from other books with the non-existant data from this book.............

Really nothing more than a 'magazine article' which had been given limited pages......

A limited volume, which only leads us to wait, and hope for someone else to do a complete job on this subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dennis Jenkinson - Premier Motor Sports Journalist
This book was not really written by S. Moss (he did the forward) but is a compilation of articles by Jenkinson who was England's foremost racing journalist from the sport's post-war revival until ill health forced his semi-retirement in the mid-1990's. During this era he reported on racing and cars for the British monthly Motor Sport. "Jenks" raced motorcycles in his youth and was Moss' co-pilot when they won the Mille Migila for Mercedes in 1955 so he wrote from the perspective of a participant and competitor. Pithy and opinionated, yes, but his writing remains the best record of the sport from his time. He always managed to get to the bottom of the story and had the respect of the most important drivers and team owners. A great book for the F1 enthusiast and fan of racing from the 50's through the 80's. ... Read more

This report examines the market for motor sports in the UK from the point of view of consumers, in terms of their spend on visiting motor sports events. The market has recovered from a disappointing year in 2000 caused by a combination of declining attendances at some of the big meetings and the British Grand Prix - traditionally the biggest revenue-earner of the year - being ruined by bad weather. This is the fourth time Mintel has reported on this sector and, as with previous editions, the aim of this report is to assess the annual level of expenditure by consumers and to identify important sectors of the market and the leading circuit operators. Exclusive consumer research has also been conducted in order to determine interest in the different types of motor sports, and also to establish attitudes towards aspects of the sport. 5-0 out of 5 stars What a gem!
This has to be a one of a kind book! This book to takes you to various race circuits around the world.Although there are several obvious omissions the book is still superb.Colour photos, factual information, diagrams, etc ,make this book a great value and a bargain.

Most motor racing fans will enjoy this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars So where's the Glen?
This is a fabulous book. I wanted to say that so my only nit-pik can be taken in proper context. How, I repeat HOW, can the Watkins Glen circuit in upstate New York have possibly been left out of this book? It's probably because I attended the Grand Prix several times in the late 60's, that I am flabbergasted by this omission. Other than that glaring omission, I loved the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is One Book to Keep on the Coffee Table!
This one is a "no-brainer," for me. If you love auto racing, this book is a MUST HAVE! It doesn't matter what kind of racing circuit you enjoy: NASCAR, Formula One, IRL, CART, it doesn't matter. This book shows the tracks, detailed descriptions of each turn, including highlights of famous races on each course. For circuits that have changed over the years, it even shows the evolution of the changes. With stunning color photos of famous drivers, famous racing moments, and several track perspectives, and even the famous 14 mile Nurburgring circuit from days gone by. This is a book all racing fans should have sitting close by to refer to at a moment's notice.

NOTE: (added 5/19/02) The book only goes up to the 1999 season, so it will not reflect the changes made to Hockenheim, Germany's circuit in the 2002 season. This is a MUST HAVE book if you have an interest in remembering the older, longer Hockenheimring that is now a thing of the past.

5-0 out of 5 stars World Motor Racing Circuits
Excellent Book.As well as giving in depth, but easy to read descriptionsof each Grand Prix circuit, many tracks from around the world are includedsuch as Indianapolis, Surfers Paradise and many more. All circuits havethe track layout with the speed, G-force and the gear selected on eachcorner and straight. On some of the tracks there are driver profiles and adescription of a great race on the circuit. There are rally good picturestoo.A lot of great information and pictures are packed into this book. Great for a novice but it also offers something for the expert. ... Read more

Book Description
"The Speed Merchants" tells the story of veteran racer Michael Keyser's racing & film experience, across the U.S. and Europe, from 1969 through 1972.He relives what it was like to watch the great Ferrari 512s and Porsche 917s that dominated the world manufacturer's series in 1970; to follow Mark Donohue and Roger Penske as they shook up the Trans-Am through Canada and the United States; to see McLaren's hold on the Can-Am finally ended. The Speed Merchants details the successes and failures of such drivers as Vic Elford, Brian Redman, Jo Siffert, Pedro Rodriguez, and Jackie Stewart; and racing at such tracks as Daytona, Sebring, Indianapolis, the Targa Florio, the Nurburgring, Monaco, and LeMans.

When first published in 1973, "The Speed Merchants" was hailed among other books on racing as "the standard by which other works should be judged." Now, the author has totally revised the book, more than doubling the number of photographs and adding a personal dimension that could only be brought by someone in his unique position as driver, photographer, and filmmaker.

With brilliant full color photography and evocative prose, The Speed Merchants brings to vivid life the sights and sounds of a lost era. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitive Account of Racing by a True Racer
After 35 years of reading and collecting sports car related titles (160 books and counting, with many long out of print and quite rare), Keyser's "The Speed Merchants," as well as his companion "A French Kiss With Death," remains among the top 10 I've ever had the pleasure of reading. The unique photography is alone worth the price.Unlike countless other sports car racing titles that are churned out with great fanfare (2005 has been a banner year), "The Speed Merchants" features page after page of photos that won't be seen anywhere else; they're alone worth the price of the book. The text is "fresh", not a rehash of some previous article or book by the same author as is more often than not the case in this field of writing. The original edition of "The Speed Merchants" was a milestone in sports car racing literature, but the revised edition is a welcome improvement on an already superb book. The text is clear, consise and tremendously informative- and that is what true followers of the wonderful racing seasons of the late 60s-early 70s are looking for.I've lost count of how many times I've picked this book up for a quick read, never failing to find some small bit of information that I'd missed before. While Keyser is an obviously talented writer and photographer with a sincere passion about the sport, he also brings to his work the added benefit of being a racer himself, and an extremely good one at that. That must certainly explain, at least to a degree, the overall quality of "The Speed Merchants".Here's hoping Keyser will attempt a detailed history of the entire 1970-71 sports car seasons- something long overdue.

4-0 out of 5 stars fascinating story
A personal journal of motor racing in the late 60's and early 70's - Michael Keyser writes from the perspective of car owner, driver, and photographer. The contrast of that era with today's racing environmentcouldn't be more drastic: where today's races are computerized andclinical, the sport back then had a very personal touch ... and wasdangerously cavalier. The book is let down only by the averagephotography.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for fans of Sports Cars golden years
Porsche 917, Ferrari 512, Ferrari 312P, Matra 670, Porsche 908, Alfa Romeo33, Lola T280, and their gentlemen drivers; It was just a superb era forMotor Racing. Finaly I see a book that covers it all. ... Read more

Wonderful. That's the only word I can find to describe this book. Senna's true fans do have to read this book. Read it. It's the best book written about Senna.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book shows the reader a completely new side of Senna
The book is written by a close friend of Ayrton and gives a great view at the racing driver Ayrton Senna, but it tells about another side which isn`t known by most people as well. I loved this book because it doesn`t write alot about his death but about his life, his religion and his thoughts.Iread many books on Ayrton Senna, but this is the best one and everybodywho is really interested in him has to read it!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars very good

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for F1 fans
This is a good book on F1 history, with plenty of detailed technical and apisodic information concerning teams, drivers and cars. The author shows a profound knowledge on the subject of F1 grand prix racing, and the book is a very good source of season by season information, from 1950 to 1996. It will please all fans of this most important category of car racing, although an updated edition is now needed.

It was time for something completely different. It was time for the Type 917. Mid-engined like so many earlier Porsches, it had a 12-cylinder air-cooled boxer engine that produced 580 bhp from 4.5 liters when first announced in 1969. By 1972 the 917 was enjoying success in the hugely popular Can-Am series in America with a turbocharged 5.0 liter engine of 950 bhp and later a 5.4 liter unit that produced over 1,000 bhp! The hero driver was usually the late Mark Donohue. Later came the 935, 956, and the evergreen 962 that enjoyed a race-winning life of many years, way beyond the normal two or three years.
