What drives them? Twelve of Ireland's legendary motor-sports stars speak about the highs and lows of their sport, whether scorching up the stages in rallying, the perilous thrills of motorbikes or the glamour and high stakes of circuit racing. Ruthless determination to get in front, and at the same time blocking the driver or rider behind causes bitter rivalries, shocking injuries and sometimes even sabotage. Bravery, teamwork and sheer exhilaration also have their part to play. This title features Derek Daly, Martin Donnelly, Eddie Irvine, Eddie Jordan, Michael Roe, John Watson, Billy Coleman, Paddy Hopkirk, Austin MacHale, Rosemary Smith, The Dunlop Brothers and Jeremy McWilliams. Product Description
For four years in the early 1900s, the Fairmount Park Motor Races were run on an eight-mile course in Philadelphia's West Fairmount Park. They drew half a million spectators the first year but surprisingly have largely been overlooked as part of automobile racing history. There were never any serious injuries and not a single death but after four years the event was banned, with safety concerns cited. Both the on-track action and the off-track events that affected the races are described as are the successful crusade to stop the races and the attempts to revive it in the years following. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Racing History
This is an informative, interesting, often exciting history of a little known series of automobile races. Seneca provides a thought-provoking analysis of the local politics behind the decisions of the Philadelphia elite regarding the holding of automobile races in Fairmount Park in the period 1908 to 1911. Although the races were safe and extremely popular, several members of the city's elite believed they were an inappropriate form of entertainment, and after 1911, the races were never held again. However, the four annual races brought together some of the leading race-drivers of the era, and a surprisingly wide variety of car models. Seneca gives a minute-by minute (and sometimes second-by-second) account of the races, to the point that you can almost hear the tires screech and the crowd shout, and smell the tires burning and the clouds of pungent gasoline exhaust! The book is a really interesting treatment and should appeal to auto enthusiasts, those interested in Philadelphia history, and to a broader audience of readers who would like to know more about popular culture in the early 20th century. ... Product Description
Following his highly acclaimed books on Stirling Moss and Jackie Stewart, Karl Ludvigsen heaps equally lavish treatment on the legendary Argentinian who got his start racing in his home country during the 1930s. Beginning with Fangio's early car-building days with his brothers and friends, Ludvigsen goes on to examine Fangio's Formula 1 stint at Alfa Romeo, where he won his first world championship in 1951 at age 40; his dramatic success with Maserati in 1953, as well as his victory at Carrera Panamericana; his ensuing F1 world championships with Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari, as well as his epic battles with Moss; and his ill-starred appearance in the Indianapolis 500. Also discussed are Fangio's 1958 kidnapping and his legendary appeal to women. Brimming with rare archival photographs, this is the definitive history of the grand master who earned a record five F1 World Championships before his retirement in 1958. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good photographic book
This is a very good book about The Maestro. Because, make no mistake, Fangio was the real deal.

The photos are amazing and includs a color section in the middle. The text is well balanced and resumed, it's not a definitive biography of Fangio, but for starters it will do.

Highly recommended. ... Read more

Setright, who is considered one of the world’s foremost and most forthright writers on the subject, offers fascinating divagations on everything from the origins of the word “dashboard” to the maximum speed of a raindrop.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read
Setright's book is a must read, not only for car enthusiasts, but also for anyone interested in the social history of the last 150 years. It is full of wit and insight, and is vastly entertaining and enlightening. This hardbook version stimulated me to read it all over again. It is every bit as good as I remembered it.

I have only one gripe. It was described as the illustrated edition, but has no more pictures in it than the paper back version I purchased a couple of years ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fresh take on a hot topic
As an automotive journalist, I've read my share of histories of the motorcar, but none captured my interest like Setright's fresh look at the interaction between car and society. Instead of opining on how the car has impacted on society, he writes about how society has transformed automotive technology and styling over the last 100 years. Be prepared for strong opinions and a decidedly Eurocentric point of view, but also enjoy a tale of heroes and charlatans and some of the best writing ever on the subject. It's also beautifully illustrated, and the layout is worthy of the best coffee tables. Give it to someone who thinks he knows the subject and watch how he keeps telling you about interesting stuff he reads in this great book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A car book for the dedicated fan
The good:Setright will teach most people more about cars and technology in this book, than one could learn from reading 100 others. He uses his unique skill to focus on what is truly important technology and to ignore the waste.

Setright's many opinions are worth as much as his technical details are.His impressions of things like all wheel steering and automatic transmissions are a true breath of fresh air.

The bad:Those who have read Setright will know his writing is top notch. This book though is sometimes repetitive and disorganized. It feels like he may have tried to be too broad for once. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Super Book
My only complaint about this book was that it was too short.

I waited too long.Brashler's book sent me back in time to the 1930s and let me enter the world of Negro League baseball, and the atmospheric writing transported me there thoroughly.I'm now going to rent the DVD, and hope it's half as good as the book.

I recommend this book to anyone who's a fan of baseball history.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Soul Of Baseball...
there was never a dull moment reading this. inspired by countless tape recordings brashler made with cool papa bell and satchel paige, this books puts you into the lives of back baseball players in the 1930's as they travel through the midwest, often encountering prejudice, con-men, loneliness and self-doubt but sticking to their guns and rising about the drama. the language brashler uses to tell the tale makes it authentic and warm. a perfect companion to the movie... ... Product Description
Bruce McLaren's performances as a Formula 1, endurance, and Can-Am driver were almost always impressive. But it was the New Zealander's highly successful career as an innovative carbuilder which forever etched the McLaren name in the annals of motorsport. This photohistory examines McLaren's legendary endurance and Can-Am racers beginning with the formation of Bruce McLaren Racing Limited in 1963, continuing through his tragic death at the Goodwood circuit in 1970, and finishing with the completion of the Can-Am series in 1974. Splendid photography from the archives of Dave Friedman give readers views of the cars under construction and in action, and candid glimpses of Bruce McLaren and other personalities associated with the organization, including long-time teammate Denis Hulme. A special epilogue brings the story full circle with coverage of the million-dollar 1998 McLaren F1 "supercar" in both road and race trim. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars McLaren Sports Racing Cars
McLaren is known today for the Formula One championships they have won inthe 1980's and 1990's with drivers like Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, and MikaHakkinnen. But many people don't know who founder Bruce McLaren was orthat the team was selling sportscars and winning sportscarchampionshipsin the 1960s and 1970s.McLaren Sports Racing Cars by Dave Friedman is awonderful photo history of the early Team McLaren.

Starting with a briefsection on Bruce McLaren's early racing career, it moves through theformation of Team McLaren, their Can-Am championships, Bruce's death in atesting accident, and the team finally quitting sportscar racing toconcentrate on F1.There is also a chapter on McLaren's foray into racingat Le Mans in the '90s -- coming back to its heritage.

The book does notgo too deep into facts on the old Can-Am outside of Team McLaren, but as inhis other books, Dave Friedman's photos (both B&W and color) arewonderful.Fabulous action shots, close-ups of the engines and chassis, and candid photos of Bruce and the other drivers of McLaren cars, such asChris Amon, Dennis Hulme, Dan Gurney, and Peter Revson.Included are notonly the race team's cars, but also those of the Can-Am privateers, whobought and raced McLaren customer cars.A beautiful photo history of anage in racing when bigger was better and engineers were only beginning tocome to grips with aerodynamics.A must for every fan of Bruce McLaren,Team McLaren, the old Can-Am series, or vintage sports racers in general. ...
