5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect gift for that hard-to-shop-for NASCAR fan of any age
NASCAR Pop-Up: A Guide to the Sport is illustrated by Doug Chezem and provides over 65 pop-ups and pull tabs and a 12-second sound chip to accompany a vivid history of the race car in general and NASCAR in particular. While unsuitable for a lending library, this is the perfect gift for that hard-to-shop-for NASCAR fan of any age!

5-0 out of 5 stars NASCAR review
I purchsed this for my neice and she loved it!!! She works for a marketing group where NASCAR is her client.

4-0 out of 5 stars Extremely detailed!
Wonderful pop up book - however, this is not a book for young children. The pop ups themselves are complex and fairly fragile.Additionally, there is a substantial amount of very small written text that require the reader to turn the book in several directions to read each. For Nascar fans this is a wonderful book,as the amount of detail is amazing and offers a wide variety of interesting facts about this sport.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sound chip activation in the NASCAR Pop Up Guide to the Sport
Note from the designer--

I have found that the atmosphere from the tropical printing and assembly plant in China is locked inside the shrink wrap. The month on the ocean and the tropical air hold the moisture inside the paper and the electronics. Once the shrink wrap is removed, the book breathes and the released moisture that is trapped inside the paper and electronics will evaporate and clear all the wiring inside the back cover.

When you open your book, let it "air out" as you read it and the sound chip will activate by removing the tab quickly in the light. One of my copies had to air out for a day before the chip triggered. Once the moist air is released all should be fine. Enjoy the book while you wait for the sound to catch up! ... Read more

Product Description

Penske, Shelby, Hall, Gurney, Hill, Ginther, Reventlow, Miles, Cunningham, Krause -- these are the men who dominated sports car racing in North America at the start of the 1958 racing season. They had spent a lot of their own money on the hobby they loved, but now they wanted something back. They wanted to go pro.For the next 16 years, the cars became progressively faster, the competition hotter, and the stakes higher. But what was it really like to thread a factory-sponsored Porsche 917 or Ferrari 512 through the corkscrew at Riverside or to tromp the brake on a factory McLaren at the last possible deep spot of the Canadian Corner at Road America?. Few are fortunate to know first-hand, but for the rest, Dave Friedman's photography straps you in the driver's seat. More than 300 photos, many in color, relive the fastest, hottest, most intense racing in American history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Pictorial of a bygone era in racing.
This is a Really Nice Pictorial.. Of a Bygone era..Many who did not have the pleasure to see these cool cars myself included get a Chance at it.Before Sponsors and Rude People took it over. Not as many Corvette Pics as I would like, but interesting nonetheless. Mr.Friedman, Thank you, And Consider Doing another Corvette Racing book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good...but not great
As others have mentioned, the photos are great. They do a great job of showing the state and conditions of sports car racing at the time. So if the photos are great, why only three stars?

Because the content beyond that is really light. I'm too young to have seen these cars the first time(36 now) but have seen many of them at vintage events. While pictures of a field full of three different types of Lotus are enjoyable to look at, there's no explanation as to what makes them different. The same is true for all the marques. Also missing is much detail from or about the drivers and teams.

Finally, the book has a decided West Coast bias. I've been to Road Atlanta several times and live a short drive from Road America but found few photos from either of these tracks.

It's not bad, but you'll need some other reference material to fill in the dead air around the great images.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pro Sports Car Racing in America 1958-1974
If you like pictures that show everything about the racing scene in the early 60's Dave has captured the scene. Great photography.

2-0 out of 5 stars Pro Sports Car Racing in America, 1958/1974
Some really good photographs and, at times a good account of the object of same. ABSOLUTELY lacking of what races where run at what time and all of the accompaning data that you would, and have come to expect from a book such as as this.

As such, if you try to correlate the data from other books with the non-existant data from this book.............

Really nothing more than a 'magazine article' which had been given limited pages......

A limited volume, which only leads us to wait, and hope for someone else to do a complete job on this subject.

Dennis

5-0 out of 5 stars PRO SPORTS CAR EXTRAVAGANZA!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fifty Years of Ferrari: A Grand Prix and Sports Car Racing
An excellent Ferrari book!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great Job!!!!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Very bad book
This book is of poor quality.... both content wise as well as production wise. It fell apart after reading it two times already. It is just a bunch of old photos that you can easily get in a less expensive book. DO NOT BUYTHIS BOOK!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent Ferrari book
Fifty Years of Ferrari has been written to celebrate Ferrari's long competition history in Grand Prix and Sports Car championships. It is an outstanding book; detailed, interesting, and well presented. The pictures are good quality and relevant. Alan Henry has obviously gone to a lot of trouble to write and organize this book, and the work has paid off with glorious results. I would recommend Fifty Years of Ferrari toall Ferrari enthusiasts who are interested in Ferrari's long and illustrious racing history. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent - BUT BUY British version from amazon.co.uk
Excellent book - unfortunately I didn't buy the british version right away - which comes with an extraodinary CD. So I bought the british version as well and offered the american one to a friend. LONG LIVE OLD EUROPE

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful, humorous, thrilling
Recently I bought the UK-version of this book. It is called 'Into the Red' and comes with a CD with sounds of the sportscars described in the books. I agree with all other reviewers: this CD plus book is a must-have. Thepictures in the book are beautiful, the text by Mason and Hales istechnically, humorously and very interesting to read. Even if you are notfull into racingcars, this is still a very nice book to have in yourbookcase !

5-0 out of 5 stars Get It With The CD!
It can be ordered through Amazon UK; It's called "Into The Red" and the engine sounds on the CD are awesome.

5-0 out of 5 stars A 'must have' BUT ...
This book is outstanding. Nick Mason's brief account of each car's history and how he came to buy it is interesting and often humorous and Mark Hales' account of the driving experience conveys great feeling. The photography isalso of very high quality.BUT you must buy one that comes with the CD,the book is titled 'Into the Red' outside the USA. Listening to the CD(loud!) while reading the book is an awesome experience which should not bemissed.Particularly track 5, the V16 BRM, the sound of which will makethe hairs stand up on the back of your neck!

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb book - but what's this about no CD in the USA?
This is among the best car books I've ever seen. The photography is all new - no recycled press photos you've seen over and over. The writing style is clear and evocative of the best story telling. It could have beenpublished as 21 monthly articles in Road & Track. The tone is friendlywithout being silly. It contains technical information without gettinghopelessly bogged down in minutiae. HOWEVER - as I was reflecting how coolit would be to download audio recordings of these cars in action (imagininga website) I read that the UK version comes with a CD! Why isn't this inthe US version? As the Buddhists say, all suffering stems from desire... Now if I could only buy (and maintain!) my fantasy Chaparral and Ford GT-40and Ferrari Daytona and Mini-Cooper S and Lotus 21 and Jaguar D Type andsupercharged Bugatti and Porsche 911 and Cobra and Buell superbike... ... Product Description
Brooklands, near Weybridge in Surrey, holds a unique and highly important place in the histories of both motoring and aviation. It was the first purpose-built motor racing track in Britain and the first major circuit in the world. From 1907 to the outbreak of the Second World War, the banked circuit was the epicenter of British motor sport, and events at Brooklands - races and speed record attempts - were an important part of the sporting and social calendar.

Motor sport was not the only activity for which Brooklands was famous, however: it became an important center for aviation. The first flight of a British pilot in a British aircraft took place there in 1908, and Britain's first flying school was opened within the circuit in 1910. Several manufacturers began aircraft production at Brooklands, and the most important of these, Vickers, took over large parts of the site when motor racing stopped in 1939. Many aircraft, including the Wellington bomber, were built here in large numbers during the war.

When peace returned in 1945 the race track at Brooklands was in poor condition and built over in places. Racing never resumed, but the aviation history of the site grew ever stronger, with design and production of airliners including the VC-10 and Concorde.Today Brooklands is home to a thriving museum and, as the years pass, more and more of the old track is being restored to its former glory. This book tells the story of this unique and important site, and conjures up the atmosphere of pre-war race meetings, of wartime aircraft production, and the birth of some of the world's most famous aeroplanes. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Motor Cycle Racing History
This book was published in 1982 and covers road racing Gran Prix bikes of the seventies and early eighties. The book covers in detail all the technical aspects of setting up a road racing bike and the various racing engines of that time. The physics discussed still apply today and can help you make mods on your sport bike to handle better. This book will not make you a faster rider;the only one that will is Mike Hailwood's "The Art of Motorcycle Racing" For those of us riding sport bikes during that time it reminds us how special the GP bikes were compared to today's super sport racing in the US.

5-0 out of 5 stars valuable reading
Sure this book was written in the seventies. But a liter of water still weights a kilo and the circumference is still 2 pi R..
Many of the sport bike available to 16 year old's these days could out perform some of the top GP bikes of the seventies. Some folks that own these bikes might even know how to ride them, but do they understand them? This book leads you through the ins and outs of the engineering of the motorcycle. This book is a valuable addition to the gear-head's library, get it while you can.
The internet has a wealth of information but rarely in the form this book takes, or so authoritative.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book About A Great Car
I saw one race when John Mecom brought them back from Nassau in 1965. The car had to run in SCCA's C Modified class. The sight of a car that large accelerating (that) fast left an impression that's still with me today. Local owner/driver Delmo Johnson put on a driving display that none of could ever forget, as he passed the competition on, and at times off, the track.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Cobra Killer-Corvette Grand Sport.Bow Down.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost like they never existed.
Good book, but not great.Unfortunately, it is the only pice of writing on these 5 legendary cars that GM engineers built and raced in "secret".Lots of photos you won't find elsewhere, and it is the only place the incredible story of these cars is recorded. How funny that GM marketing "commemorated" (with the 1996 'vette) these cars, which they did not support, and actually axed when they found out about them. This story just goes to show what a driven group of individuals at GM were able to achieve with passion, means, and hard work - they were able to defeat the Ford racing machine and the legendary Cobras! ... Product Description

The action on the track isn't the only story in NASCAR. In a sport that has trancended its "playing field" to become a cultural phenomenon, NASCAR racing has become as much about the star driver, the grizzled crew chief, the calculating team owner, the hard-working pit crew, the skilled hands back at the race shop, and the die-hard fans as it is about brightly colored cars speeding by at 200 mph. Through evocative candid portrait photography from the lens of Scott Robinson, Faces of NASCAR explores the full spectrum of people involved in the Nextel Cup series, from drivers to officials to spectators. Each subject is photographed in a striking portrait, with incredible detail. Robinson's simple, yet powerful photographic portrayals highlight the passion, intensity, and joy these racing diehards feel when they are spending the weekend at the track. A must-have for any NASCAR fan, Faces of NASCAR speaks to the human side of this exciting and fascinating sport through these portraits as well as commentary from those who love this sport most.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Pictures
Ok, I'm not giving this one 5 stars b/c I'm pictured in the book, but because it is a great visual story of the great sport of NASCAR. Since the fans are heart of NASCAR, it is essential that they have a place in this book. Scott did a fabulous job (aside from spelling my name wrong even after he verified it-typo?)
The crisp, bright pictures pull you in with each viewing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vrroooooommmmmm!!!!
If you love Talladega, Bristol, Lowe's Motor Speedway and all those other haunts where NASCAR is a religious experience, then you will enjoy seeing Scott Robinson's up-close and personal images of the real people who make auto racing an authentic part of life in the United States in the early twenty-first century.

Robinson's camera lens has a point of view that is at once affectionate and straightforward. He neither condescends nor fawns, but he does thoroughly document with the fervor of a true believer in NASCAR.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice gift book for NASCAR fan
I received this book at Christmas and have been pleased to keep it on the coffee table. To me the most interesting sections are not about the cars but the fans.Nice quality printing and binding. Some text but mostly its about the photography, which is very good. This will appeal to racing fans of all ages..

5-0 out of 5 stars A fresh perspective
Scott Robinson's photographs and essays provide a fresh and welcome perspective on the world of NASCAR, one that is more personal and intimate than I'd previously seen.I enjoyed his photographs tremendously, and found the essays insightful and engaging. The pictures are both vivid and warm, and anyone who has even a passing interest in auto racing and NASCAR is going to love this book!

The International Motor Racing Guide is the most ambitious motor racing reference book ever written. With unrivalled breadth and exhaustive detail, it covers all major championships and races throughout the world, beginning with the first automobile competition held over a century ago. When the first edition of The International Motor Racing Guide was published in 1995, it quickly established itself as an indispensable reference for journalists and motorsports enthusiasts alike. 5-0 out of 5 stars As complete as it gets in one volume
This is an indipensible reference work for the motor racing enthusiast. Unfortunately, the web is making books of this type rare. Vital stats for every major series, driver, and circuit are included. The presentation and commentaries are readable and enlightening. Hopefully another volume is forthcoming from Mr. Higham but if not, this book provides a comprehensive overview of automobile racing in the 20th century within the covers of a single volume. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Well Done
This book is very well done and a nice follow up to the prior edition and I would recommend having both since the first volume does feature certain things not covered in the follow up, such as the now defunct IROC series. My understanding is that IROC was continued up past 2002, so why it is not in the follow up is beyond my grasp. I hope a more current edition is published in a year or so, and if it is, I plan on purchasing it as well. The data provided in these books is invaluable. Highly recommended, but this edition I feel is not worthy of 5 stars as it lacks input on the ARCA, NASCAR lower tier series, and IROC, but given that what it does contain dwarfs what it doesn't I'd certainly give it 4 stars.

2-0 out of 5 stars Troubleahead
The trouble with this kind of data book is that it's already dated one minute before it's published. This book covers up until 2002 and, as you know, were already at 2007...

Also, in the Internet age all thsi data can easily be obtained in a lot of web sites. Of course, this kind of book has the advantage of displaying the data in a friendly manner and within only one tome.

Well, anyway, make up your own mind...

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely priceless
It seems that Mr. Higham has spent years searching through dusty basements and smelly photo archives to assemble all of this information. If you're interesed in finding out who won what when, this is the book for you.A bit mind-numbing really, as there is so much information gathered here that it is overwhelming.

For the serious anorak, there is nothing like this volume!

Highly recommended. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I am NOT the editor
I am not sure why my name is associated with this book, which obviously has some reporting issues. Let me be perfectly clear: I had NOTHING to do with this book. Yes, I have edited other books in Rodale's cycling series, but I HAVE NEVER LAID EYES ON THIS BOOK. I have contacted Rodale and they are working to get my name removed from this page.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a surprise! from one of the authors
As I am one of the featured authors in this books ("the sport's leading women writers!") you'd think that the publisher would have bothered to tell me about the publication of this book. No, I discovered it, three years later, accidentally in a web search. I was still more surprised to find in the chapter entitled "Riding with Confidence" that I supposedly changed my first flat tire while riding with a friend named Ann and tried to get someone named Eric to drive out and help us. A nice little tale, and maybe it happened to someone, but not to me. The day that I would have asked someone to help me fix a flat tire, let alone drive to do so - well, I would have had to have had two broken arms. You can ask my mom.
So maybe this book is great. Seeing chapters with my name on them with chunks of stuff I did not write (I did write the stuff after the long intro, for a Bicycling magazine article) makes me wonder how the rest of the book holds together and how many more cute little tales didn't really happen at all. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Ferrari's Sports Prototype and Competition Cars in a Deserved History
For fans of a certain vintage, no period of Ferrari's sports car competition history hasmore fascination than the 60s and 70s, when the transition was made to mid-engined cars and Ferrari faced stout competition from Porsche and Ford. Anthony Pritchard's Scarlet Passion covers the period from 1962 through 1973 and delivers a deserved documentation of the glory cars in their glory years. Ferrari fans will find much here: all significant grand touring and prototype cars, including the 250 LM, the Can-Am cars, the 312P prototypes, the 512S and 512M cars which competed with the legendary Porsche 917, and the 312 PB. Sections on personalities, specifications, championship race results, and detailed histories for specific chassis numbers provide the detail required. The book is also lavishly illustrated with wonderful pictures of each type. Not to be missed. ... Read more
