4-0 out of 5 stars Good but not as thourough as could be...
This book covers most of the popular trails in my area (panhandle) with detailed information about each. I especially like the authors descpritions on his personal rides. I do have one complaint however. The author gives general info about rescue and local services, but leaves out specifics like local bike shops, hotels, maybe even restaraunts. It would be nice to have this type of info if you are planning on traveling some distance to one of the listed trails so that you could plan accordingly. Otherwise a great book and an interesting read for early evenings when you can't actually be out on a trail tearing across a single-track.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book on trails in Florida
This book is a good beginners guide to mountain biking in Florida. The book is divided into sections of the state which make it easy if you are just looking for a place to ride close to home. Also included is a map of the state with ride location marked on it. There is also another helpful section which lists the trails according to type, for example, beginners, advanced, family, scenic, etc. Each trail has a sketched map layout of the trail along with information on the general location, elevation change, aerobic and technical difficulty, scenery, hazards, services along the way, rescue index, and how to find them.

If you live in Florida, it isn't difficult to find the trails. If you are not a resident, a regular map of Florida and the author's directions should point you in the right direction. To find the trails in the parks, most state parks and trails have maps of the park at the ranger stations. Since the book is about the trails themselves, you will not find information about hotels in the area or where the local bike shop is. However, if the trail is in a park and camping is allowed or, as in the case of the Pinellas Trail, the trail has places to eat, shop, and stay over night along it, the author has noted this.

The only thing we noticed was that the author didn't seem to be from Florida. For example, in a park in our area, he talked about how he biked late at night and regretted doing so. Every Floridian knows better than to brave the bugs & the wildlife at night in a state park on a bike so to us this information was more humorous than helpful:) Otherwise, a good book if you are looking for some ideas on where to ride.

3-0 out of 5 stars more on the trails, not the writers view.
not to bad. directions could be better. missing a lot trails. where is the nearest bike shop, store, lodging? maybe I should write a book? .... I am.

5-0 out of 5 stars makes you want to ride
As he does in the pages of bike magazine, Rob writes to those that really ride. This book could be a vacation planner for the adventurous. If you own a mountain bike and love to take it places...this book is a must have. I can't finish a chapter without wanting to get out and ride.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring
As an avid mountain biker, I found this book to be inspiring and motivating, even if I will probably never ride half of the featured destinations (although I'm determined to try!). The writing is excellent, blending vivid descriptions of the terrain with a little history and geography, giving the reader a complete and appealing picture of each region. The pictures are beautiful and plentiful, and there are many resources listed for each trip including prices, difficulty ratings, bike shops, lodging, and additional information. Overall, an awesome book I'll probably read and refer to many, many times in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Soul of Mountain Biking
Now I know what happened to BIKE magazine's soul. It has been reincarnated into something Da Vinci would be proud of. Okay, maybe I'm getting a little carried away with the hyperbole, but calling this a guide book certainly doesn't do it justice. In fact, if you are looking for just a guide book don't waste your money. Everybody and his brother makes a guide book, but no one has ever come closer to expressing what it means to ride than Rob Story has within these pages. Like the early years of BIKE magazine, this just makes you want to go out and explore the unpaved world.

While not a guide book, it has everything else to get you started on your own epic adventure. It lists the "must do" rides in any given area. In addition to rating the physical difficulties of the rides, a clever addition is rating the mental stress factors involved with the trips. Also appreciated is the non-bike related recommended reading of the area, along with trail guide books, and outfitting services. Again like the magazine, the photos are some of the best you'll see anywhere, regardless of the subject matter.

One of the great features is the diversity of the ride locations. There are a life times worth within, and they make you dream, drool, and connive of the ultimate exotic mountain biking vacation. While this may put some people off, the best part is that the majority of the rides are totally doable by anyone with a serious mountain biking habit.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bikes and good beer; a natural combination
The book was extremely useful to introduce me to the world of high quality beer and hidden trails to ride free of traffic.
Mr. Mercer explains everything very clearly and gives you an honest opinion about good places to ride and to enjoy a beverage, including directions, prices and ambiance.
I have been riding road bikes for many years, but Bike and Brew America has inspired me to try to go back to nature and explore hidden trails.
An extra good feature is all the possible updates available through the website that Mr. Mercer gives you in his book.
A very good book. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great idea!
Todd has done it! Here is one of those rare gems that just makes you sit up and say "Why didn't I think of that?". As an avid rider and beer drinker in the Rockies, I can tell you that Todd's descriptions, both of the trails and the breweries, are right on! Reading throught the Boulder section had me re-living glorious afternoons of winding singletrack up on Walker (featured in the book) followed by perfect pints of Mountain Sun beer. There's a group of us from all over the country that gets together three or four times a year to go explore a new place in search of sweet singletrack and hoppy pints. We've found our new bible! I can't wait for the others to come out! I even had a chance to meet Todd at the 2001 Oregon Brewers' Festival. On top of being a first rate author, he's a super nice guy. This book is a great companion for anyone who enjoys craft-brewed beer and wants to find the best of the local trails. Ride on!

5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate guide book!
This book is excellent and is ideal for the mountain biker who is searching for vacation destinations. The maps, camping information and trail descriptions make it easy to find your way around foreign territory and guarantee a worthwhile experience. I was especially impressed by the accuracy of the trail reviews. The anticipation of riding the trail after reading the review is matched by the saddle experience itself. The author is right on with his duration and technical difficulty ratings. Todd Mercer also seems to have a pretty good taste for beer. After being directed to and visiting the Mountain Sun in Boulder, Colorado, I didn't want to come back to work. I can't wait for my next vacation so that I can check out some more of the Rocky Mountains using this book as my guide. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have!
I've owned and utlized this 'guide' for approximatly two years. We reside in the Atlanta area and are avid mountain bikers and cyclists. This guide is essential for trail markers, ride routes and cool treks off the beaten path. The book is small enough to tuck away in your camelback and use while riding! FANTASTIC! I would highly recommend if you are looking for trails in Georgia...

An absolute must for any level mountain biker. Trail reveiws are very accurate, maps well marked and easy to read and elevation profiles are helpful in gauging the trail's difficulty level. North Carolina FalconGuide book is also worth checking out. Buy 2, one for your bookshelf and one to keep with your bike eqipment or give to a friend. One complaint - not enough trails in Metro Atlanta area. ...

5-0 out of 5 stars A Unique, Concise, Thorough, endlessly Readable Guidebook.
I just returned from a mountain biking vacation to Joshua Tree National Park, Mojave National Preserve, and Santa Monica Mountains National Recreational Area and this guidebook proved indespensible. It contains almost all information necessary to plan your trip and somehow manages to be both concise, thorough and readable.

Story introduces each chapter with a brief description of the geography and history of the park. Then Story lists several rides within the park, each accompanied by detailed descriptions (including technical and aerobic difficulty, best time of year to ride, overall length of trail, etc.) and maps. Though some road bike routes are included, most trails are for mountain bikes. Each trail I rode was accurately described. Each chapter also contains boxes describing the fauna (animals) and flora (plants) you'll likely encounter within each park.

This book isn't just a cycling guide, it contains virtually all the information you'll need to plan your trip. Story concludes each chapter with information about local lodging, camping, bike shops, grocery stores, and restaurants (his recommendations are first rate). He also provides helpful contacts (park visitors centers, etc.) which should be able to provide any other information you might need. Story has also eliminated the extraneous elements so many other cycling guidebooks seem to contain (elevation maps might be visually enticing, but let's face it, they aren't necessary).

What is really remarkable about this book is Story's terse, engaging writing. The abundance of information this book contains is presented in readable, often witty language. He doesn't just describe, he gives the reader a feel for each park and the surrounding communities (when applicable). Unlike most guidebooks I've read (which usually contain flat, predictable humor), Story's humor actually works; it isn't "laugh-out-loud" funny, but wry, witty humor that always relates to and never detracts from the subject matter.

The only improvement I would suggest for future editions is to provide a general map of each National Park. The trail maps only feature a small segment of the park where the trail is located. It is sometimes impossible to decipher where each trail is located within the entire park itself. This is particularly difficult for visitors not familiar with the area (like me). It was sometimes impossible to tell from the maps where the most convenient place to stay (closest lodging to the trails) is. The next edition should provide a map showing where each trail is located relative to the entire park. Before visiting a park, you should obtain a complete map from the National Park Service (Story does tell where to obtain these).

Story has set high standards with this guidebook, the first in the "Bicycling America's National Parks" series. It's the kind of book you'll enjoy reading even if you don't plan to hit the trails anytime soon. Story's writing is so engaging that finishing the 300-pages is effortless (300 pages may sound long, but it really isn't). This book is a must read for any cyclists interested in visiting the National Parks of California. I can't wait to read the subsequent guidebooks for other states.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great guide and an even better read!
This book must be the first of its kind--a guidebook about bicycling in the national parks. The author shows that the common misperception that bicycling is not allowed off-road in national parks is just that-- a misperception. This book features some outstanding road rides as well as mountain bike rides. I think the descriptions of the parks themselves and the rides therein are well-written and clear. The author gives the kind of information you'd want to know before setting off on a ride, and does it in a colorful, sometimes very deadpan funny way. There's also some cool trivia about the parks and good, useful information about where to buy supplies, repair your bike, do laundry, take showers, camp, and other stuff like that. I think this is a book that shows you how to take part in the most fun sport in the world (bicycling) and do it in some of the most spectacular places in the world (the national parks of California). A must for any travelers to the national parks who want to get out of their cars and explore. (By the way: it's not just for hardcore bicyclists--there are numerous family and beginner-level rides as well.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Bicycling National Parks is fun!
What a great book! It helps you to explore American National Parks in every detail. Wonderfull guide to american natural wonders, which you can discover on your bicycle every day. By the way, I have never been in the US, but who knows...? The book is so tempting that one day I will certainly make a bicycle trip through the US. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome trail guide for Oklahoma and Texas
Since I am the author I think this is the best trail guide book on the market for my two favorite states, Oklahoma and Texas. I worked my ...off on this project, it is the second guide book I have done about mountain biking in these two states, actually the second edition of the same book.

I had such a blast working on this project but was quite glad to see it finished. Now I have a blast going back and rereading it and remembering what fun I had while out on research trips. Most were a pleasure, I got to meet some great folks and do some very excellent riding, though there were a few trips that bordered on miserable due to bad weather or general fatigue on my part as I neared the end of traveling for research.

My hat is off to the many bike clubs and excellent shops I encountered along the way, and all the super people who helped me complete this project.

Thanx to you all, hope to see you and ride again soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mountain Bike America -New Hampshire
Excellent! Great selection of trails with a variety of terrain. This guide book provides more pertinent trail information than any other I've read. Particularly helpful is the trail contour plots as well as overlaying trail lines onto accurate topo-maps. The authors writing style is unique causing me to actually read the book cover to cover.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Rides
This book has a lot of great info for both seasoned riders and the beginner. The maps, trail directions and descriptions of the rides are just the start. I have rolled over the MT. Agamenticus (Mount A) Pg. 236 trails for years and the author really hits the mark. I can't wait to hit the rest of the trails.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Mountain Bike America, New Hampshire/Maine
This is the finest mountain biking guide I've ever read. It gives great information about trails of all abilities, plus tips on local attractions. This type of information is good to all types of mountain bikers, from rabid racers to families on day trips. Along with some of the premier trails in Maine and New Hampshire, such as in Acadia National Park, it gives descriptions of trails off the beaten path, such as that through Jefferson Notch in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Mr. Fitzhenry also provides local histories of the areas visited (which could be a book in itself) as well as great directions and trail descriptions. This book is good for local New Englanders and those from "away", because Bob did such a good job of finding trails throughout the two states. I highly recommend it. ... Read more

Editorial Review

For an exceptional fat-tire roundup of the Evergreen State, follow the highly informative tread of John Zilly. The author of Kissing the Trail: Greater Seattle Mountain Bike Adventures widens his scope with two volumes detailing some of the best trails in Western Washington. Mountain Bike! Northwest Washington, and its companion, Mountain Bike! Southwest Washington are the definitions of good guidebooks: they boast serious research, sensible organization, and a battery of useful trail maps and directions. What's more, Zilly possesses a flair for the written word not often found in such practical guides; he steers the hungry cyclist through a variety of trail conditions and skill levels in style, highlighting particularly gnarly terrain and displaying an infectious enthusiasm for the thrill of a widowmaker descent. Serious knobby-heads will also thank the author (and, later on the trail, curse him) for the inclusion of 30-mile "epics," all-day single-track journeys that combine awesome views, technical riding, and all-out endurance tests. Every mountain-biking hotspot should be so lucky to have a Zilly as tour guide. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great NW Washington State Guide Book
I wish all guide books were as well researched as this one. Each hand drawn map has GPS waypoints on it plus all the major features and a reference to the USGS/Green Trails Map. Locations of nearby campgrounds and supplies. Plus a very nice rating system so you don't get in over your head. There are 2 maybe 3 overlapping trails with the "Kissing the Trail" book but that's ok. Wish I had thought of having a career of riding my bike and writing a book about it. Way to go John.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible
These two books are the bomb(S). The directions and the descriptions of the rides are spot on and most importantly the selection of the rides (if you like truly remote, tough, and stunningly beautiful adventures) is tremendous. My copies of these books are dog eared with love and mud. Trust me you cannot go wrong with these books - and I've biked all over the country - or biking in the Pacific Northwest July - Sept - Amazing! Too good! Be prepared for some long drives from Seattle (2hrs each way) but the memories will last much longer. Enjoy! I hope Zilly goes on to write books for the rest of the country... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pavement not dirt
Finally- a bike guide focused on the pavement not the dirt. Nothing against off road riding, just all the Colorado guides are focussed on trails and dirt even though most riders ride on paved surfaces. Thorough and detailed, I cannot think of a paved ride that isn't included.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Colorado Road Bike Guide Book
Michael Seeberg has written an excellent road biking book for all the passes here in Colorado. And the hundreds of color photos are such an excellent source. I have read the book and fully recommend it whether you are a cyclist or not. The infomation and the super pictures are well worth the price. Finally a book with it all! And what a great gift as well. ... Read more
