5-0 out of 5 stars The only guide worth having
I started mountain biking in the last couple of years and I have to say that my horizons were definitely broadened with this book. i've been to about one fifth of the featured trails and looking to get about halfway through by the end of the year.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
This book has simply changed my life. After reading it, I now eat better, sleep better and make more money. I have also heard that I'm now more attractive, but that remains to be seen. Strazz is a master with the written word, his tales will titilate for hours on end. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best N.C. mountain bike book I own.
If you're going to mountain bike N.C. you need to own this book. It's easily the best one I own. The maps, directions, and charts are great and easy to follow. The rides are varied with all skill levels included. And this guy Muth has a great writing style, loaded with pesonality. My only suggestion is that he includes Dupont when he revises. Thanks Timm!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great trail guide. Great stories.
This is a biased review: I rode some of these trails with Timm while he was putting together the book. The book does a great job of communicating the care and enthusiasm he brought to the project (well, care in trail mapping - there were some impressive biffs). This book not only has a great selection of trails, but it's a fun read. By far the best guide to trails in North Carolina.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have guide
If you are going mountain biking in NC, you need this book. The information is excellent, with a lot of the book devoted to the awesome Pisgah National Forest. But almost as important, it is written with a passion for the ride like no other guide I've seen. This isn't a dry list of turns & mileage, but a colorful and helpful description of the entire trail. It's the kind of book that makes you want to ride. ... Read more

Finally someone has done a through guide book of ohio. The information in this book could be a little more up to date, but that is a little hard to due with trail expansions and closures. I'm extremely happy to see the book because I met the author while riding at mickeys mountain, in norteast ohio, with two friends. Although the author put some of the pictures with different trails . I'm on page 137, in the front. Needless to say I was stoked to see my photo in print. ... Read more

Editorial Review

For an exceptional fat-tire roundup of the Evergreen State, follow the highly informative tread of John Zilly. The author of Kissing the Trail: Greater Seattle Mountain Bike Adventures widens his scope with two volumes detailing some of the best trails in Western Washington. Mountain Bike! Southwest Washington, and its companion, Mountain Bike! Northwest Washington are the definitions of good guidebooks: they boast serious research, sensible organization, and a battery of useful trail maps and directions. What's more, Zilly possesses a flair for the written word not often found in such practical guides; he steers the hungry cyclist through a variety of trail conditions and skill levels in style, highlighting particularly gnarly terrain and displaying an infectious enthusiasm for the thrill of a squirrelly widowmaker descent. Serious knobby-heads will also thank Zilly (and, later on the trail, curse him) for the inclusion of 30-mile "epics," all-day single-track journeys that combine awesome views, technical riding, and all-out endurance tests. Every mountain-biking hotspot should be so lucky to have a Zilly as tour guide. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book on the Great Divide
Michael McCoy's Cycling the Great Divide: From Canada to Mexico on America's Premier Long Distance Mountain Bike Route is an essential item for those who are planning to bicycle or hike all of the Adventure Cycling route.

As McCoy notes in his well-written and informative introduction, this isn't an easy trek. Uneven terrain, adverse weather conditions, and a lack of water and essential services are often the norm.

As I found, having the book on hand better enabled me to plan ahead. For instance, my discovering that the climb over Indiana Pass would be long and difficult prompted me to begin my cycling day early, which in retrospect was fortuitious in that had I dilly-dallied, I would would have been caught in a late-afternoon snow-storm.

One the book's many strengths is that it includes a much-needed daily route synopsis. Though I am directionally challenged, I did not miss a single turn, not even in New Mexico, where many of the roads and trail heads are unmarked.

Sightseeing, points-of-interest, and photos have been included. I was often glad of this -- as I remarked to some onlookers, if McCoy hadn't pointed these things out to me, my trip would have been more of a slog than it was. For instance, if he hadn't mentioned that the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad passes through southern New Mexico, I would have missed it.

The historical information is also a plus in that it will appeal to both tenters and armchair readers. There was many an evening when (because the sun set early) I was glad I had this book on hand.

The material in this book also complements the Adventure Cycling maps. In retrospect, my trip was without incident, in part because I had both on hand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good luck figuring out where to go without this book
If you are riding the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route, you MUST have this book. This is an awesome route - Mike McCoy and the gang did a great job of researching it. One comment on the writing though -- when he uses the word 'steep', he means 'extremely steep', and when he says 'extremely steep', he means 'don't even try to ride your bike up this with a fully loaded bike'. A 'respectable climb' is really a lung-buster. Just expect everything to be a little harder than he makes it sound, and then you wont feel angry because it is not as easy as he makes it out to be. I think he must have either rode it without being fully loaded, or he is a very strong man! Anyhow, if you ride the Great Divide, you will have fun.. I guarantee it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for riding the Great Divide
Whether you're planning on riding the whole thing at once or just just doing a section of it, I'd strongly recommend getting this book. My wife and I rode entire length in the summer of 2000, and we carried this book on the outside of our packs in a plastic bag at all times. We referred to it at least once every day. Like in any guide-book, there are a few confusing spots, but on the whole, the author (one of the original trail planners) has done a great job. He not only keeps you on the right path, he also points out various places you should visit, gives some historic perspective, and more. The book will surely make your experience more enjoyable. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I thought!
I went looking for the well-known book that got a good review in Mountain Biking Magazine a while back.. it was called Mountain Biking Moab... but it was by David Crowell.. it has (I found it in Moab!) maps and profiles and such in a carry-along format..

This book is a good read.. but buy the other book if you go. It is now called Mountain Biking Moab 2nd Edition Pocket Edition or something like that...

I don't know what's going on with this publisher.. This book that I'm reviewing used to be called something else too.. but it looks like the publishers of the good book (the pocket edition) bought this one too... whatever.. but get the pocket edition if you're riding the trails!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Gift Idea!
Especially if you are new to mountain biking and live in the SE USA, this book is just fantastic! It pointed me to places and experiences that I will never forget. I kept it in my car as I traveled around the Southeast. Maybe I couldn't go ride some days but I discovered places that intrested me for future riding opportunities. This book was given to me as a Christmas present. It makes a great one!

4-0 out of 5 stars MT Bike! The deep south
Great book for info on trails in LA, MS, AL, GA. I am familiar with the trails in LA and MS and the author's interpretation of the trails is very accurate from difficulty of the trail to trail condition. He did miss a couple of trails in LA. One is relatively new and located at Bodacau Park (army corps of engineers). Good technical trail. Off I-20. The Kisatchie National forest trails (caroline dorman and one other) are probably not good to ride right now as there are forest fires flaring in that area 7/00. Those trails are rather rocky to ride too. Cheers. This is a great book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You, too, can do it! (be sure to get this book first)
Andrea's been there and done that and tells all about it (and how you can do it too) in this snappily written, info-packed guidebook for biking the Grand Canyon. Though Andrea's a long-distance cyclist at heart, she's written this book for us regular folk. An intro includes tons of advice on biking in general and biking the Grand Canyon specifically, even including a history of biking in the area which is fascinating! Rides range from 1.2 miles on up and are rated for technical difficulty and family friendliness. She includes info for each ride on the type of terrain, the availability of water, elevation profiles, necc. permits, and the best season to bike it. The book is well illustrated with photos and maps and also includes anecdotes and local lore cyclists can enjoy over a campfire or when they're taking a breather. Andrea was a Grand Canyon National Park ranger for many years and her depth and bredth of knowledge about the place is incredible. For any level of mountain biker heading to the Grand Canyon, this book is as essential as your water bottle and a set of properly inflated tires.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great guide!!
What a great biking guide for the Grand Canyon!! The book is well written, organized and laid out clearly. The book has great photographs and information about places seldom seen by many. If you like to bike and see awesome places and views at the Grand Canyon this is the book for you!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Biking the Grand Canyon Area
Biking the Grand Canyon Area is more than a travel book. It is immediately apparent that Andrea Lankford knows what she is talking about with regards to great trails. This is the second book of hers that I have read. Her first book scored 5 on my list as well and is called Biking the Arizona Trail. Andrea was one of the best Park Rangers the National Park Service had. She passes on her knowledge of an area she called home for many years. You won't find a more detailed book! Go out and buy it and ride like the wind! ... Read more
