5-0 out of 5 stars TIME TO PLAN A ROAD TRIP
I read this book with interest....I like to ride, and who doesn't like to drink beer? This book is nicely written and an easy read. I've riden many of the trails in Michigan, and some in the surrounding states, plus I've eaten in some of the brew pubs also, so, as I review this, I believe I am qualified to give FIVE STARS *****. Mercer hits the "nail on the head" with his description of the rides, and the food/beer appears to be on track also....but I think I have a passion for a pale ale rather than a porter. I've started traveling more for work, I'll pack my bike and this book......every work trip will become a road trip. Buy it!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The one that stayed
When I started mountain biking, I bought a few books for helping me figuring it all out. This one was amongst them.

Unfortunatelly, mountain biking books start by telling you that instead of reading books you should get on your bike and ride. An invaluable $15 tip, but why don't they put it on the back cover? :)

So, 3 years later, I have a nice shelf with a few rarely touched mountain biking books. It's only this specific book that I find myself returning to every now and then. Why? for 2 reasons I could think of:

1. It has a good spirit. It motivates me. I'm a jogger / recreational rider, doing it for the quality of life. I sometimes need a little push for the next day's training, and Howard is a great motivator. I remember a few times when a phrase in this book made me set an alarm for 5:30 the next day. Isn't that what sport books are for?

2. I use it as a reference for... running. It has valuable sections about stretching exercises and breathing. The mountain biking techniques are also explained thoroughly, although not very well illustrated. Howard explains technical stuff very well.

If you are looking for a well illustrated book, or a biking dictinoary / bible then this might not be your best bet. But, as I said, my shelf has many of these while this one is still in use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Howard does for mountain biking what Fixx did for running
John Howard has done for mountain biking what Jim Fixx did forrunning: written a single-volume point of departure that, in one fast, easy read, provides an overview of a nascent sport brimming not only with information but inspiration. Dare to open Dirt! to the first page and you'll be hard pressed to resist hitting the trails the same day.

There are few sports experiencing the explosive growth of mountain biking, and few as misunderstood by the non-participating public. While it is true that some mountain bikers missing the self-preservation gene monopolize television time by indulging their psychoses in stunts of escalating danger, the real truth is that mountain biking is an activity that, like skiing, swimming or volleyball, can be enjoyed on virtually any level by everyone from the most committed sofa spud to the highest-ranked elite athlete. And you don't need a"mountain" to do it, either, as Dirt! clearly demonstrates.

The sport couldn't have picked a better spokesman: Howard (The Incredible Human Machine) is one of the most accomplished and versatile cyclists in the world. Three-time Olympian and an Ironman champion, he held the world record for speed on a bicycle (an astonishing 152 miles per hour) for years before he helped someone else to break it. That kind of gracious sportsmanship comes through in Dirt! It's a clarion call to others to discover the exhilaration of leaving asphalt behind, and if there's one overarching theme that runs throughout, it's Howard's fervent desire to draw others into a sport he knows will bring immense personal rewards.

This well-illustrated book is full of wonderful advice for everyone from the rank beginner (practice your technical skills before a ride, when you're fresh, not afterwards, when you're tired) to the experienced competitor (spray Pam all over your bike before a muddy ride and you'll avoid pounds of clinging mud weighing you down). There is also a good deal of attention paid to the mental aspects of riding, which thankfully avoids the "be one with your derailleurs" school of spiritual hokum and presents instead Howard's hard-won wisdom concerning mindset and attitude.

There are chapters covering such topics as maintenance, stretching, weight training and jumping technique, but one of the most fascinating is "Surviving the Crash." Howard is the man who first uttered one of cycling's most basic axioms, that there are two kinds of cyclists: those who have crashed, and those who will. This chapter is one that should be read by anyone who ever mounts any kind of bike, and alone is worth the price of the book.

While Dirt! could benefit from some tighter proofing and a few additional definitions for pure neophytes - terms such as scrub, drifting and "foot dab" are largely understandable from context, but a bit more depth might aid in really comprehending their significance - these are minor carps and undoubtedly will be attended to in the many future editions that are sure to come. The book is short at 180 pages but that's because Howard cuts to the chase without wasting a lot of your time with superfluous verbiage.

Now that I think about it, he seems to be saying, "Enough reading...get out and ride!&quot ... Read more

Editorial Review

Moab is a mecca for mountain bikers, who come from around the world to ride its challenging trails. Whether you're a newcomer to the area or a frequent fat-tire flier, Mountain Bike America: Moab is a great addition to your fanny pack. Local cyclist Lee Bridgers blends his passion for mountain biking with his obvious love of Moab, describing 49 rides ranging from easy (Old Moab Highway, Dalton Wells) to "very difficult to abusive" (Porcupine Rim). Each starts with an overview--where to start, how far the ride is, how long you can expect it to take, warnings, environmental concerns, and how to get there--before launching into a detailed description of what you'll experience along the way, be it slick rock, deep sand, dinosaur tracks, or rusted mining equipment. Bridgers is careful to point out places where cyclists should use caution, encouraging less experienced riders to dismount--"if you are pushing a mountain bike, you are still mountain biking. Live to ride tomorrow." Detailed maps will help you plan your days--especially the cross-sections of each ride's ups and downs. Throughout the book, Bridgers emphasizes the need to protect the environment--"as mountain bikers we had better learn to co-exist with nature or else we'll lose the privileges to enjoy it from the saddle"--and offers up stories from his experiences as one of Moab's leading bike tour guides. Special sections on safety (carry more water than you think you'll need), bike selection and repair, Moab-necessary techniques (sand riding, dealing with flies), and area food, lodging, and services make this a useful all-around resource. --Sunny Delaney ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This book IS Awsome
Want to ride Moab, never been there? This is your guide. 379 pages of well written straight forward usefull information about the Mecca of Mountain Biking.

I got my copy two weeks ago and have literally read it front to back. It has made me laugh and cringe, but most of all it has made me ride! Lee Bridges has put together an outstanding compilation of the best rides in the area. The detailed maps, trail difficulty ratings along with the mile by mile ride descriptions will help you select a ride that is suitable for your riding ability.

Along the ride you'll also find entertaining and shocking anecdotes about Moab and it's people. I commend Lee Bridges for putting together an no-holds barred honest account of the area.

If your thinking of riding Moab or just want a book about the area this is it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Buy the best; learn the rides, the place, and the people.
My wife and I have mountain biked in Moab on two separate, week long trips. From this limited experience, I thought I had a pretty good grasp of the best local rides. On our last trip to Moab, we purchased (really on a whim, because we have 5-6 other Moab guide books) the Mountain Bike America "Moab" book by Lee Bridgers. WHAT A GREAT BOOK ! I read it like a novel, from cover to cover. This book has it all. It includes more rides than other guide books, and describes many rides which are in no other books. The ride descriptions are well done, and very complete. Lee Bridgers goes to great lengths to point out interesting history, geology, and excellent "dinosaur details" for each ride. Why does this place (which looks like it could easily be on another planet) look the way it does? What further separates this book from other guide books is the attention to the local color of the area. The author introduces you to the colorful people of the Moab area.

Having read this book, I know I must return to Moab. I discovered I had not even scratched the surface of the rides in the Moab area. I discovered 3-4 new rides in the "Gemini Bridges" area alone, where most guide books describe only one option.

If you go to Moab, be careful. This area should be treated with utmost respect. I suggest you should consider hiring a guide for this area for part of your trip.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even if you have other guidebooks, get this one.
I have gone to Moab a couple times with my hard core mountain bikers friends. They have several guidebooks, but always checked out this one before starting on a ride. It is a little big to tuck into a small camel-back, but is great fun to read. I read the entire thing and tabbed the rides I wanted to do before we left home. This guy is clearly a true mountain biker, not a writer. It was more like he was just talking to you, telling you humorous stories and about his favorite places. Very folksy. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Get out and ride, and take this book with you.
This is a great book to get out and around if you don't have "inside" information on where to bike. I can only comment on the Central Ontario section, which is fairly complete, although it does leave out a few county forests that are excellent rides. One weakness of the book is that the trail maps are not very accurate, especially in large, relatively unmarked areas like Durham Forest, where a compass is usefull. I highly recommend this book. Added bonus is that a lot of these trails make great cross country skiing in the winter. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for Seattle Area Mt Biking.
Good driving directions, good riding directions, good guide to what is actually at the trail. All around a great addition for anyone just getting going in Mt. Biking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even in the dark, this book got me out of the woods!
As a visitor to Seattle, I used this book to find some good local mtn. bike trails. The author of the book has detailed every aspect of these trails to the mile. If you use the information and follow your bike computer, you will find your way around some awesome trails. I would suggest photocopying the pages and carrying them with you as the book is too bulky unless you have a big backpack. Luckily, when we rode the Middlefork trail at Snoqualmie we were smart enough to tear the pages out of the book. We misjudged our timing especially due to some of the obstacles we faced on the trail i.e. water crossings, fallen trees, etc. With one light (one burned out in 2 hours) and three people, we followed the book to the "t" and hiked approx. 6 miles of this trail in the dark. Without those torn out pages, we'd have spent the night in Snoqualmie! Great book. Buy it if you want to ride the trails in Seattle!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Seattle Area Mountain Bike Trail Resource
If you're new to mountain biking or new to the area this book is a "must have." The book is filled with rides within 90 minutes drive of Seattle. Directions to trailheads are excellent, routes provide a good overview of each area, and route maps provide adequate diection. This is THE guide for Seattle-area mountain biking. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Take the journey!
If you are looking for some didactic manual on how to ride a mountain bike, then, well, you've come to the wrong place. If you are, however, searching for a good book that both inspires and illuminates the mind while chronicling both enthralling and humorous mountain biking anecdotes, then, without doubt, you have come to the right place. Wayne Lankford, not unlike most of us, was a working stiff who spent most of his free time doing seemingly important stuff and on the couch watching TV. Then, much to his credit, the author began to think, in more ways than one, outside of the box.

Mountain biking, in all of its beautiful simplicity, takes one away from the box and the all-too-familiar surroundings of your plush sofa and gigantic TV and deluxe surround sound setup of one's TV room into a far more rewarding and fulfilling milieu called The Bike Path. One may find The Bike Path, as in all new endeavors, an unfamiliar and, due to lack of use, unworn path, yet one that ultimately, if given the opportunity, will lead to an extraordinary destination.

For someone like me who is not an avid mountain biker, I can attest to the fact that this is a journey that anyone can enjoy -- regardless of your love for mountain biking. Once you've begun the journey, you all but envelop yourself in the book and are transported to a place of introspection that you are sure to find both transcendentally cathartic as well as indelibly rewarding.

"We are, you and I, at some sort of intersection right now. This one's called the Bike Path. You are invited to follow. Who knows what you'll find just up the trail from here."
-Wayne Lankford

5-0 out of 5 stars A great ride, a great read
Librarians will have a tough time trying to categorize The BikePath because it could easily fit on several different shelves, though not for long. Yeah, it's about self-discovery, but it's not a self-help book. It's about mountain biking, but not how-to. It's about spirituality, but not religious. It's funny, but not .... well, you get the picture. The BikePath deserves its own kiosk, because it is, simply, like nothing you've read before. The BikePath is about the metamorphosis of a man, a soul, a writer. The author begins as a two pack smoker, 6 pack drinker - out of shape, out of control. In fact, the author's writing style very closely parallels his mountain biking skills. Awkward and slow at first, but by mid-book, the biker is becoming a master of the trail, while the writer is becoming gifted artist. It's really fun to watch the evolution of both. Whether or not you are motivated to try mountain biking isn't the point. Doing SOMETHING is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely unique
Is The Bike Path about mountain biking? Yeah, and Moby Dick is about sailing.
Imagine if you would: In a last ditch effort to save their sanity, Jack Kerouac and Deepak Chopra take up mountain biking, then inexplicably decide to collaborate on a book abou the experience. It may be redundant to call something absolutely unique, but The Bike Path by Wayne Eliot Lankford falls squarely in that category. We are along for the ride as Lankford jumps from the corporate treadmill onto a mountain bike and begins to see life not as a continuing series of problems, but as a continuing adventure. Soul searching on a 17-mile loop around Oak Mountain, Lankford explores where he is in his life and how he got there. This book combines the lyrical rhythm of a songwriter with insights and wisdom that come only after serious reflection. Highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Stellar Guidebook!
An Unbelievable book! Having biked parts of this trail myself, The attention to detail that Ms. Lankford has supplied is astouding! I have read many guidebooks covering many topics, and this is one of the best, from the mileage markers, to the detailed maps, to the great photos. Additionally, the book doubles as a great adventure story of two slightly crazy, but totally ambitious girls! I reccomend this book without hesitation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it and bike it.
I just got Andrea Lankford's guide and getting my hands on it is bittersweet: I love the book... but really could have used this guide a couple of months ago. In November and December of 2002 I became the first solo thru biker of the Arizona Trail (AZT) and the third thru biker ever. During my journey I relied on photocopied maps, second hand advice, and a crumpled road map-certainly not the thorough guidebook that is available today. Lankford supplies us long distance adventurers with a guide complete with accurate trail descriptions, exact mileage, humor, an easily readable text, maps, and photos. Lankford is truly adept at writing a guide after thru biking the AZT, thru hiking the 2160-mile Appalachian National Scenic Trail, and serving as a National Park Service EMT/Forest Ranger. They said Andrea Lankford and her partner Beth Overton could'nt hack this 800-mile mountain, canyon, plateau, and desert route, but they were wrong. And if anyone ever said that a great guide could not come out of their expedition, they were clearly incorrect as well. As being the only other person to bike this gorgeous and challenging trail besides Andrea Lankford's friend Beth, I can tell ya one thing for sure: this baby gets 5 stars. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent vistor's guide to the Flagstaff area
I've visited the Flagstaff area on a regular basis since 1980. We planned a 4-day, late-November vacation around several books ordered from Amazon.com. Only the Grubbs book arrived by the time we left Southern California. Off my 16-year-old son and I headed for Arizona with the book and our matching Specialized Stumpjumpers. We did 3 of the author's rides rides and found the book accurate as to location, distance, and intensity of the rides. For me, a roadie with limited mt. biking skills the book was outstanding. My son, a good racer, enjoyed the time also. We will be back to do more rides from Grubb's book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Where's the single track?
This is a collection of mostly oddball rides done by the author of several of Falcon Press' hiking guides. He seems to prefer too many long rides through the trees on washboardy forest service dirt roads without much of a mountain bike feel to them. You can do most of the rides in a car. There needs to be more attention to what mountain bikers really like . . . carving single track trail with varied surface over interesting terrain (i.e. some rough, some rocky, some steep, some smooth and some easy), views, cool destinations and more loop rides. Nice try for a first edition. However, the author is not really a mountain biker, just a hiker taking a stab at what he thinks mountain bikers would like. Ho-hum. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best thing for PA Mtn. Bikers
The book provides a well-written, comprehensive, guide to the entire state. It is apparent that the author has logged countless hours in providing riders with a complete guidebook to many rides throughout the state. Although this book does not cover any specific region in depth, it gives riders a taste of all areas. Riders of all skill levels will appreciate the format. There is a colorful and informative commentary for each ride, providing the "icing on the cake." This is one of my favorite books in my collection but one that never stays on the shelf.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive & interesting
I have been searching for a good guidebook on PA mountainbiking for over a year. Ginieczki's effort here appears to be very well done. I have ridden at least 5 of his reviewed trails in the Eastern & Northcentral parts of the state, most before the book was ever published. I found his reviews of these particular trails very detailed, accurate, interesting & w/ crisp & clear directions. He sprinkles interesting bits of geography, history, humor & trail tips that make reading most enjoyable. I like the way the book is laid out & written, with good up to date markers & maps. Most measured trail distances matched my bike's computer - a good sign. My only gripe is that, unfortunately, it's not the kind of book that is easy to pack or refer to during rides. Otherwise, the most up to date, informative & best of its kind for PA that I've come across.

1-0 out of 5 stars Please avoid the South Mountain Emmaus Trails
The South Mountain, Emmaus, PA trails, as described in "Mountain Biking in PA" by Rob Ginieczki, are located on PRIVATE PROPERTY clearly marked by NO TRESPASSING signs. The gentlemen who owns this property is VERY ANTI-MOUNTAIN BIKE and these trails should be avoided. Numerous conversations took place between myself and the author of this book, before the book was published, informing him of the access problems associated with this area. Since he chose to disregard these conversations and send his readers to areas which are ILLEGAL to ride in, I would suggest that all readers be wary of the trail directions provided in this book. Please feel free to e-mail me for other, legal areas to ride in this area. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A great guide to riding some of the best Terrain our there.
As a 27 year resident of Northern California, I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by some of the trails I found in this book. The trail coverage is broad as Northern California is not a small place. This book outlines some of the best trails throughout Santa Cruz, San Jose, San Franciso, and all the way up to the California-Oregon border. I look forward to riding some of the far Northern California trails that are outlined in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent trail guide!
This book covers Northern California trails in pretty good detail. The book does a good job of covering the famous trails and covering some less well known backcountry trails that even locals may not know about. The directions to the trail heads are usually pretty good. The trail directions are sometimes out of date and a little vague, but usually good enough to keep from getting lost. Overall, I definitely recommed it! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Hiking, biking, paddling, and skiing share a few common traits when it comes time to make camp. But they also have a number of unique concerns that need to be addressed. The authors of Making Camp--four field experts from Backpacker magazine--have done just that by dedicating a chapter to each pursuit. Steve Howe's backpacking chapter discusses the basics of trip planning with tips on food shopping, acquiring maps, pack essentials, and what items should remain at home. Alan Kesselheim's paddling chapter addresses water-travel specifics such as loading a boat and waterproofing bags. Dennis Coello equips your bike for heavy loads and suggests how to combine the proper saddle, shorts, and personalized seat angle for a comfortable in-saddle experience. Finally, John Harlin tackles the world of snow camping with tips on how to adjust to a world where everything is cold and inhospitable. He teaches you how to survive the elements with a variety of shelters, including a high-wind-proof tent, and how to delicately dig your first snow cave. --Benjamin Tiffany ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Will Make All the Difference!
There is no other book like this on mountain biking - FOR WOMEN! It is so well written, in a warm, friendly, but practical tone. Any and all topics relating to women and riding are covered. If there's something you've been wanting to know and couldn't bring yourself to ask a guy, it's in this book! If you enjoy riding but want to enjoy it more, or if you want to ride, but aren't sure, this book will make the difference for you. It gives you confidence enough to get out there and gain more confidence! It's well designed, rugged, and has enough photos and good layout to make it an easy, enjoyable read. Plus, the back is filled with great references and resources. Thanks Jennifer for a great book! Is there a Mountain Biking for Women II in the works?

5-0 out of 5 stars Fitting In finally.
I've been riding for years and couldn't figure out why I always seemed to be behind the pack, always the slowest and hurt more at the end.

I picked up this book and began to get the picture. My bike didn't fit me at all. I'd been given it by my boyfriend at the time and it was heavy and oversized and caused me to ache. All the extra weight of it made me the slowest of the pack, and the wrong fit - made it impossible for me to jump or descend comfortably.

I found this book to answer alot of the questions that the "Guys" never seemed to mention.

If you're thinking of getting into riding or are thinking of getting out of it because your not having fun. Try this first. The tips, ideas and techniques can make all the difference.

It's well written. Great layout and design. Very imformative and helpful. Whether its single track or road riding - this the information you can use.

The trails are beckoning and I'm now leading the pack on occasion. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The MTB history book I've been waiting for!
I read a Berto story in Mountain Bike magazine regarding the history of the mountain bike, so when I saw this book, I had to pick it up. It's a great read with all the usual suspects (Breeze, Fisher, Ritchey, Sinyard...), and as an avid mountain biker, factoid freak, and history buff, this book answered a lot of questions about the origins of the mountain bike. Living in Mountain View, CA, it's great to be able to ride the trails (at least the one's still open) where the mountain bike was born.

4-0 out of 5 stars A story that needs to be told.
The article I read about the book is from the local county paper, The Independent Journal dated feb 6,1999. The author is interviewed and the conclusions are discussed openly. It is a great format for the book because each of the men going for the inventor of the mountain title are interviewed and quoted. I went to high school with the real inventor and hung with them. Read the book to see who it was. ... Read more
