Excerpt: The Holmenkollen ski jump, located in Holmenkollen, Oslo, Norway, is host to the world's oldest notable ski jump competition still in existence. Since then the capacity of the stands has been increased to over 50,000 people and the jump has been extended 18 times, last time in 1982. Today's tower extends 60 meters above ground, and 417 metres above sea level. The current record of 139.5 meters was achieved by Andreas Kofler of Austria on 14 March 2010. Crown Prince Olav participated in 1922 and 1923. Every year, more than a million tourists visit the ski arena. The tower offers a panoramic view of Oslo and the Oslofjord. The hill that was demolished in 2008.The precursor to the Holmenkollen competitions was the Husebyrennene, held slightly closer to the town centre, that spanned from 1879 to 1891. The first competition in Holmenkollen proper was on 31 January 1892. Watched by a crowd of 10,000, the length achieved by the winner, Svein Sollid from Morgedal in Telemark, was 21.5 meters (Sollid was also the first festival winner in the nordic combined event.). Additional events were added as shown in the Winners over the years section below. In 1923, the Holmenkollen Ski Museum, located at the base of the ski jumping tower, opened; hence it is the oldest ski museum in the world. This book will appeal to people that know and love Alta, Utah or are interested in the history of skiing in the Western US.It primarily chronicles the life of Alf Engen, and therefore, chronicles the history ofAlta and and an important part of skiing in the west.Engen was theinventor of modern powder skiing and richly deserves the honor of thisbook.

Neat pictures, but kind of a muddled presentation. This is not really a general history of skiing, but a biography of Alf Engen who was a local hero in Salt Lake City, Utah and ran the Ski School at Alta for years andyears. There's too much about ski jumping and not enough about other kindsof skiing.The author, Alf's son Alan, seems like a spokesman for the skiindustry more than a historian. ... Read more

Excerpt: The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2009 (Czech: ) took place 18 February 1 March 2009 in Liberec, Czech Republic. This was the fourth time these championships were hosted either in the Czech Republic or in Czechoslovakia, having done so at Janské Lázn (1925) and Vysoké Tatry (both in 1935 and 1970). The biggest sports event in the country's history, it hosted 589 athletes from 61 countries. Women's ski jumping and Nordic combined 10 km mass start events debuted at theses championships, both won by Americans Lindsey Van and Todd Lodwick, respectively. Norway won the most medals with twelve and most golds with five, all in the men's cross-country skiing events, including three from Petter Northug. Germany finished second in the total medal count with nine though none of them were gold (eight silver and one bronze). Finland finished third in the medal count with eight with three golds, all from Aino-Kaisa Saarinen in women's cross-country skiing. Fourth in total medal count, but second in gold medal count was the United States with six, including four golds, who prior to these championships, had won only three medals in all of the previous championships combined, including four medals in Nordic combined (Lodwick: two golds, Bill Demong: one gold and one bronze).
