4-0 out of 5 stars Worth getting
I purchased this book because I was about to do my first triathlon ever, and I had no idea how to swim properly.I also purchased a total immersion dvd, and although I think you can get by with just the dvd, I recommend getting the book as well. The book offers a lot of insight into why the author wants you to do specific exercises, and it's definitely worth reading.Between the book and dvd, I was able to get through an olympic and half-ironman distance triathlon. The only shortcomings of these products is that they offer almost no instruction on proper breathing and kicking your legs, two things that I ironed out in a swim lesson.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth the read
I bought this guys other book and DVD and invested a lot of time doing exactly what they said to do.I went from struggling to total comfort in open water swimming. I am not real fast yet but I can swim all day in rough open water.I went ahead and bought this triathlon swimming because the other was pretty basic and I was curious what this one had that the other didn't.If you are gonna swim in tri's then I would say this book is worth the time and money.

3-0 out of 5 stars Total Immersion swimming
The book overall is well written. The drills are very hard to understand and perform. It seems that to get a better idea of how to perform them you need to buy the DVD.

Not an out of the box self help book. It will require the purchase of the DVD or hire a coach to help with the drills.

I would recommemd purchasing the book but do not pay new price; pick up a used copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars From a Triathlon Coach and Race Director
This book is an essential for any coach wanting to assist individuals with open water swimming.Individuals will benefit greatly from the use of this book but will find greater value when complimented by an experienced coach.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not so great without the DVD
I've been a triathlete for a few years now, and I was looking to improve my weakness--the swim. I had read the original TI book a few years ago, and garnered a few great tips from the general concepts he discusses that helped me improve my swim times dramatically. I purchased this book hoping to refine my technique a little more, and hoping to use the drills more extensively.

The concepts in this book are very clear and easy to grasp, so if you haven't read a TI book before and want to become a better freestyle swimmer, you'll definitely get something out of it.

The trouble I had was with the drill descriptions. I think the book could have used more or better illustrations. Basically, I couldn't really grasp the specifics of the drills without purchasing the TI freestyle swimming DVD. The videos on the DVD are, in my opinion, essential to really understanding the specifics of the drills.

So, I would recommend this book, but only WITH the DVD. Also, I should mention that the DVD is newer than the book, and some of the drills are drastically refined--and therefore, easier to utilize--than what is described in the book. However, the DVD doesn't spend much time at all on the conceptual stuff, so if you're interested in learning WHY you should do all these drills, the book is good at that.

Basically, if you've read any of the TI books in the past, save yourself the time/money and just buy the DVD instead. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars very good book
very good book, written by one of the most famous open water swimmers. she explains everything.
i would like a more detailed chapter about nutrition.
I am very satisfied.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book
An excellent book either for beginner or advanced open water swimmers. This book cover all itens since preparation, trainning up to the day of competition. The book presents trainning for short and long distance for your better preparation. Easy and funny to read, this book still describes real stories (some of them motivational) of long distance competitions, like English Channel.

3-0 out of 5 stars Open-Water Swimming for Dummies
Good book for beginners and newbies.More of a technical manual, than a story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Open water coach
I used the book to prepare for my first open water 2,000 metre race off the beach last year. Its well written, interesting, full of tips and easy to read - it certainly helped me become a better and more confident open water swimming and would recommend it to all us amateur open water enthusiasts!

2-0 out of 5 stars Useful for the beginner open water swimmer
I started Open Water Swimming two years and quickly came across this book in my hunt for more information. At the time I found this to be helpful in some areas, given the almost complete lack of information on Open Water.
It may be more helpful to Tri-athletes but in retrospect with a few years long distance swimming behind me, but I think that it is somewhat shallow, no pun intended.
At the time of reading, I was starting swimming and training by myself (and still am mostly),and many of my questions were about how to move up from 1/2 mile to mile pool swims to longer sea distances. I did not find this particularly useful in this regard and I thought it's section on training was too brief, with too much emphasis on stroke.
For the specifics of Open Water swimming it meeds more emphasis on training plans & recovery, acclimatisation and habituation, goal-setting, and more specific information on some of the features of river and open sea, (jellies, flora & fauna, currents, surface topography, weather, course setting, etc). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, The Best Book On Swimming For Triathletes I have Read
Like many people, I was skeptical about this book. How could I truly learn to swim better from reading a book. But after reading this and practising the techniques I am a believer. I am a triathlete, albeit a 50 year old slow triathlete. But I began as a swimmer, so I am very comfortable there. I am not fast, but love the water. But this book has made me a better swimmer. It's in the economy of stroke. This book will teach you a way of swimming that's more like yoga or TM than those swimmers you see flailing their arms and being out of breath. This won't happen overnight, but as the author says, if you practise at this long enough you will get better.

5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive book on triathlon swimming
This is the best book you can buy on swimming. Period. In fact, most triathlon training books refer the reader to Terry Laughlins Total Immersion (TI) program, which is explained most clearly in this book. (Don't buy the out-dated book entitled "Total Immersion." I've read it; it's good; but it doesn't fully reflect the author's most recent ideas on swimming drills.)

When you buy the book, you should also order the video "Fishlike Freestyle," which shows all the drills beautifully executed by top-notch swimmers. (In fact, the "models" in the video make the drills look TOO easy.)

If you read the book, follow the program, and execute the drills according to the video, you'll become an excellent swimmer. It might take you several months or even a year or two, but eventually you'll do it. Personally, I'm still working at it--slowly--but a friend of mine went from being a terrible swimmer to being a beautiful, smooth, fast fishlike triathlete in the water by following the Total Immersion program. Several other of my triathlete friends have used the Total Immersion program with excellent success. You can spot these swimmers for the grace and fluidity as they glide effortlessly through the water.

If you're serious about swimming or triathlon, this book is a must buy. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars History of Open Water Marathon Swimming
As a book covering the facts of Marathon Swimming history, it is quite okay. But tye layout is terrible. The book is printed on the worst recycled paper you can think of and the photos are extremely bad. I am disappointed tho have paid to much for such a lousy quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Work in progress
Several editions and revisions of this book are in print, which might not mean much to the general public. However, if you are an open water swimmer and the published rosters of successful swims mean anything to you, the various editions WILL make a difference.

A friend of mine has the 2004 edition, and I just received the 2005 edition. It would seem that, in more recent printings, the history of Catalina Channel swims has been reduced to one page...almost a mere footnote.

Over 100 pages of this 400-page book focus on the partly-current-assisted Manhattan Island swim, and reflect the author's bias, which further adds to my disappointment in this otherwise well-written history.

A more equitable history of open water swims and treatment of the sport, although sadly outdated, is given in Conrad Wennenberg's "Wind, Waves & Sunburn".

Interestingly, the list of customer reviews for this book is beginning to read like a "Who's Who" of long-distance swimmers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of History of Open Water Mar Swimming
Has good background of open water swimming from antiquity to the present.Book is mostly about east coast and Europe with focus on New England and NY, since this is where author lived and swam.Amazing details in the stories, requiring much time for research by the author. No wonder it's taken over 20 years for author to write the book!By Carl Kawauchi.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book on an ultra-extreme sport loaded with details
This is a fantastic book on an ultra-extreme sport loaded with details.Captain Johnson has obviously done much research on this excellent book.I highly recommend this book as it offers rare insights into the beginnings of this ultra-extreme sport. You do not have to be a swimmer to appreciate this fascinating book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome history for an awesome sport!!!
Captain Johnson has obviously put in a ton of time researching an awesome ultra-extreme sport. His ambition may be his undoing however, because I believe the more he researches, the more he'll find that he can add to this already hefty project. I can't wait to see how this book grows over the years as he adds yearly results and unearths other "lost" swims.I am also proud that he has decided to leave out the dubious efforts of "cage swimmers" and other kooks who claim to be swimming with other aids such as fins and wetsuits.I higly recommend this book to swimmers and non-swimmers who enjoy reading about lofty human endeavors! ... Excerpt: The Men's 10 km Open Water event at the 2000 World Open Water Swimming Championships was held on November 2, 2000 in the waters off Waikiki Beach in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA. David Meca from Spain continued his good fortune and the Italian team continued its misfortune at today's 10-kilometer race of the FINA World Open Water Swimming Championships in Honolulu, Hawaii. Italian frustration continued at the World Long Distance Swimming Championships on Waikiki Beach in Hawaii today when Samuele Pampana was disqualified after finishing second behind Meca. Pampana's disqualification meant Petar Stoychev from Bulgaria was elevated to the silver medal and Tuesday's 5km champion, Yevgeny Bezruchenko from Russia, won the bronze medal. Pampana was disqualified by judges for swimming on the wrong side of a turn marker in the final few hundred meters of the men's race. Earlier in the World Championships, the Italians were unsuccessful in their protest over Meca's silver medal performance in the 5km. Meca was crowned the champion in today's 10K race. Most spectators agreed that Meca's swam the smartest race of the field and swam the straightest line in a 13-man sprint to the finish. 5-0 out of 5 stars The United States Lifesaving Association Manual of Open Wate
The United States Manual of Open Water Lifesaving is a required text for training all of our seasonal ocean lifeguards. As an Operations Lieutenant for the City of Newport Beach the book has been an invaluable referencewith general information, concepts and specific procedural techniques. There are photographs that depict various aspects of modern lifesaving andexample report forms. A lifeguard agency or public safety agency thatengages in open water rescue is remiss in not having this book for theirstudents and as a reference. Renowned lifeguard experts from around theUnited States contributed to this excellent book. The book could also havesignificant impact internationally if a beach had to start a lifguardagency where one does not exist today. If one wants to become a lifeguard, this is a must have text.I am glad that this book exists and am hopingfor a new edition that will be even better. Buy it today, you can't gowrong.

5-0 out of 5 stars great open water text book; facts, not hype
this book saves the student from the hype and promo that the PADI books now have, and is actually a very good basic text for open water.Jeppesen, the original publisher, publishes all the texts that airplane pilots use and carry in those black bags, called 'jep kits'.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad book.
Lots of good general information but I found it required more depth in many areas. ... Read more

Product Description
In Liquid Assets journalist Janet Smith, author of a history of Tooting Bec Lido and herself a keen swimmer, traces the development of Britain's surprisingly rich stock of lidos, starting with their muddy beginnings in London's parks, through their fashionable heyday in the 1930s, to their battle for survival today. Lavishly illustrated with both archive and contemporary photographs, Liquid Assets highlights some of the nation's outstanding architectural examples. But if lidos were once to be found in virtually every town and city, since 1945 many have been closed, often despite the efforts of thousands of vociferous campaigners. Liquid Assets charts the best of these lost lidos, including one in Purley where the towering concrete and steel diving board now form the curious centrepiece of a garden centre. The book also provides a unique listing of all lidos still open in Britain, with detailed case studies of the most impressive. ... Read more
