5-0 out of 5 stars super fantastic book - must have for paragliders
This is a must have for any new or experienced paraglider pilot.
The illustrations are clear and accurate and easy to understand.
The included DVD has some great video instruction.

4-0 out of 5 stars Much better than I thought after a few months experience
I bought this book before taking lessons, I read a few chapters and then my instructors recommended Pagen's "The Art of Paragliding".As a brand new beginner I found Pagen's book more approachable and ended up using it as my main reference while learning. However several months after getting my P2 Novice qualification and finding myself looking for more advanced information I dug out my copy of "Paragliding: A Pilot's Training Manual".I was actually pleasently surprised and found that it covers in lots of detail all the advanced topics I wanted to know about, in particular soaring, advanced landing and launching skills, collapse and incident recovery, etc. etc.

On reflection I can see now that when you're just learning about paragliding and flight in general there is so much information to take in.In that respect the gentler pace of Pagen's book makes it easier to read, it also presents paragliding from a beginners perspective whereas this book, although it has introductory information, really is aimed at a complete manual - it has no "refere to my book on advanced paragliding" comments.Everything you need is here.

So, if I were to buy just one paragliding book this would be it.What it lacks in information for complete beginners you should get from your instructor. When you've got your P2 and have a few hours under your wing be sure to read or re-read all the advanced chapters of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent combination of manual and DVD
Paragliding, A Pilot's Training Manual is a comprehensive, well-written manual that takes beginners through early training to advanced paragliding techniques. Easy-to-read and understand, the book details concepts and techniques, reinforced with graphic illustrations and chapter quizzes. The highlight of the manual, though, is the accompanying DVD which uses relevant video footage to clearly demonstrate concepts from launches to advanced flying skills and paragliding safety. The DVD alone is an exceptional teaching tool, and the combination of the manual and DVD together make this a winning package.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference for All Pilots
This is the most complete, up to date paragliding book out there. It covers all of the basics in depth, but also has a lot of tips that will be of interest to more advanced pilots. Topics covered include kiting, launching, landing, aerodynamics, meteorology, thermals and cross country flight. In the accompanying DVD, the author, a U.S. Air Force test pilot, demonstrates maneuvers such as stalls, spins, and collapses as well as launching, landing and thermalling. Altogether a great value and excellent reference for pilots of all levels.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for any paragliding pilot, at any level.
I am an experienced paragliding pilot of 6 years. Although the book is theoretically aimed at novice pilots, I was impressed to find out that there was a wealth of information of interest to me also.

This book is very well written, complete, and easy to read by anyone.

The accompanying DVD was also really well composed, with all the right topics, and a friend of mine who is learning paragliding has already seen it 4 times and cant stop watching it :)

A must have for anyone interested in paragliding, novice or experienced.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Bible" an unfortunate nod to that ugly book of violence and sex
I really appreciate owning this book.It has proven to be truely valuable for my son and I to progress in the sport of Power Paragliding. It is a valuable written reference to the lessons we learned from our flight instructor, plus so very much more.I recommend it to anyone in or entering the sport.I just wish it weren't called the "Bible", because unlike the original, this one really is useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the Gold Standard
As a GA pilot just beginning to get involved with Powered Paragliding, I was very impressed with this book. The author, a well known personality in the PPG world, also, I believe, holds CFI and ATP ratings (and, last I heard, was a pilot for one of the major airlines). He brings his knowledge, experience, and sense of humor to bear to provide an informative and entertaining comprehensive textbook for PPG flying.

I expected the book to be informative and thorough (it is called the "Bible" after all...) but the pleasant surprise was the layout and graphic design. The text is broken up by numerous full-color illustrations and photographs; the sidebars alone are worth the price of the volume.

My instructor recommended this as a primary source of PPG information, and I can't thank him enough.

Standard Disclaimer:
As good as this book is, it is no substitute for proper flight training. If you are that confident, go teach yourself to SCUBA dive or operate heavy machinery without an instructor; don't give our sport a bad reputation by busting yourself up in a Powered Paraglider.

5-0 out of 5 stars Up to date information.
It is a lot of stuff in this book, and most of the time it looks like it is right on the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This is a very well written book that covers all of the topics of interest to beginner and intermediate pilots. The pick of the books on the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best intro and reference on paragliding
I have read all the books available here on Amazon on that were published in the last ten years (and a few older ones) and this is clearly the best. If I could own only one book this is the one. It clearly explains the nuts and bolts of paragliding with excellent text and illustrations. All the details are covered. These are typically glossed over by most of the other authors. A good example of this is the explanation on how to attach the risers to the harness for a reverse launch. I have never seen a clearer explanation.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only book you need on paragliding
In short:Dennis Pagen has written THE book on paragliding for beginners to intermediate pilots. This book covers it all.Clearly illustrated, easy to read.I use this book as a 'refresher' each season before I begin flying. He covers all the nuts and bolts of the various topics that make up paragliding, from how to hook your risers to your harness to how to ridge soar.I have read most of the books out there on paragliding, and this one covers more than all the others combined. If you are a serious paraglider pilot who wants a good manual for refreshing, or prospective pilot who wants to learn all you can before you begin lessons, this is THE book to buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE book on Paragliding
By far the best book covering beginning and intermediate paragliding on the market today. An execelent reference and review of what your instructor covered(or should have covered).

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelente
This is the book we have been waiting for. It takes you step by step from the ground up to the sky and back safely. No questions remain unanswered and most important of it all, it builds up your confidence by letting you know what to expect from that magnificent mixture of wing, wind and will. With his outstanding illustrations, Dennis Pagen makes the language barrier disappear instantly. Muchas Gracias. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding, well-illustrated primer
This was exactly what I was looking for, a detailed, well-illustrated introduction to the sport of paragliding to help me assess the safety and decide whether or not this is something I want to pursue. I particularly liked the photos of common dangers and the detailed explanations on how to avoid such mishaps. While some of the advice crosses the line of too obvious to mention, such as not flying while drunk or high, or avoiding restricted airspace such as military firing ranges and nuclear power plants, there was plenty of new information for me, even as an experienced hang gliding pilot. This is somewhat dated (revised in 1995,) although most of the recent equipment and technical information is best learned from a certified instructor, not an intro book such as this one. I took one star off for the date and for the international focus (heavy on Japan). While most of the flying basics are universal, I would like to see a stronger emphasis on USA sites and community in the next edition.

2-0 out of 5 stars No real detail
Try to cover too much, without much substance.I might help you get an overall idea of the sport, but not much more than common sense.

I am a beginner, but not a starter and was looking for a book of which I can learn and apply from.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exciting book!
Very good introduction to Paragliding. Nice writing style, great pictures, and very informative. Focus in on UK standards, but most of it holds for North America! Higly recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars a good book which is now probably better.
I had to buy this book as part of the paragliding training course I did last year.the book prepared me well, and I still find myself thumbing through itevery now and again. the sport of paragliding is moving forward technology-wise and my only criticism would be that the book is dating quickly but I have just noticed that Noel Whittal has released an updated version of the book..it would be a good idea to get the latest version.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE FOR BEGINNERS
All I can say is that this book is a must have for anyone planning to take up this incredible sport. Its full of great pictures and ilustrations that help you with all the basic procedures of paragliding. Not to mention its excellent quality, picture ilustrations, and binding. Have Fun!... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A technical masterpiece
As with hang gliding, Dennis Pagen is the pantheon of written technical instruction for paragliding. Be forewarned that this is not a touchy feely "Fly Like A Bird" piece with lots of lofty prose and exciting color photos.

As a former hang gliding pilot, I recognized Pagen's byline and bought the book hoping it would give me a good understanding of how and why a paraglider flies, and help me to evaluate the safety, technical requirements and limitations of the sport. I bought it as a primer and expect to use it as a reference book for many years to come.

It is slightly dated with a 1990 copyright, although most of the principles are the same. The most recent advances in equipment and technique are something that should be learned from a live, certified instructor on a training hill, anyway.

3-0 out of 5 stars This book is outdated
Dennis Pagen is a great writer of flying books but this book - published in 1990 - is now - in 1998 - outdated. The drawings are not good and reminiscent more of a parachute manual than of a paragliding manual.I would hope Dennis Pagen would update his book. Paragliding techniques and hardware have considerably evolved in eight years.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best "how-to" book on an obscure sport
Dennis Pagen's been writing about foot launched flying (hang gliding and paragliding) for over 20 years.I used this book as a student 7 years ago and have found nothing better since.I still refer to it from time to time to answer questions.Well illustrated with drawings, it is a good theortical discussion as well as practical guide to flying a paraglider. The alternative books I've read since are somewhat more current on the rapidly evolving equipment, but they are no better on principles of ultralight flight and usually lack Pagen's valuable illustrations. His companion books on micro-meteorology and advanced flying topics are a good follow-on as the student pilot progresses to more advanced levels.WARNING - You can't safely learn to fly a paraglider from this or any other book. Please get professional training from a certified instructor

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent intro & technical description of paragliding
Pagen is the top writer for hang-gliding and para-gliding and this book is totally dedicated to para-gliding technique, including equipment and safety rules ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent!
Well spent money. Good (very good) introduction to powered paragliding. Not perfect, but a good handle on what you are dealing with. Canadian author, and theyn have more regs. than we (U.S.) do,soa little warning.Very Good Book.Very highly recomended by me. I*ll keep this one for reference. still have not found a good technical book. But this is a VERY good starting pont(teaches some of the questions)

3-0 out of 5 stars Powered Paragliders Take Note!
This training manual is a good source of information about learning to flyPPGs, some of which I haven't seen anywhere else. This isn't a book ABOUTparagliding, but a training manual on how to learn to fly and fly safely. There are sections on technical topics, such as wing dynamics, 2-cycleengines, and propeller torque effect; as well as sections on pre-flightchecks, take-off techniques, landing, regulations and rules of the air, and emergency procedures, to name a few. All in all, the manual contains agreat deal of useful information to complement flight instruction (but byno means should be used as a substitute for professional flightinstruction). Many typos and a few drawings that look like they were madewith an etch-a-sketch detract from the overall quality. Nevertheless, thereis lots of good information here. The section on Emergency Procedures isthorough and excellent. ... Read more
