Chapters: Iran Air Flight 655, 1988 Executions of Iranian Political Prisoners, Iran at the 1988 Summer Paralympics, Iran at the 1988 Summer Olympics, United Nations Security Council Resolution 620, United Nations Security Council Resolution 616, United Nations Security Council Resolution 612, United Nations Security Council Resolution 619. Excerpt:1988 executions of political prisoners in Iran (Persian : ) refers to the systematic execution of "thousands" of political prisoners across Iran by the government of Iran, starting on 19 July 1988 and lasting about five months. The majority of the prisoners killed were supporters of the People's Mujahedin of Iran , although thousands of supporters of other groups, including the Fedaian and the Tudeh Party of Iran (Communist Party), were also executed. The killings have been called "an act of violence unprecedented in Iranian history unprecedented in form, content, and intensity." The exact number of prisoners executed remains unclear. Amnesty International recorded the names of over 2,000 political prisoners reportedly killed during this time, but Iranian opposition groups suggest that the number of prisoners executed was far higher, and as many as 30,000 prisoners may have been executed. Great care was taken to keep the killings secret, and the government of Iran denies their having taken place, but with the large scale of the operation word leaked out from survivors. Explanations offered for why the prisoners were killed vary. Perhaps the most common is that it was in retaliation for the 1988 attack on the western borders of Iran by the PMOI Mujahedin, although this happened months after the executions had begun and does not explain the executions of members of other leftists groups who opposed the Mujahedin invasion. The executions Khomeini... ... Read more

Competing again at the 2004 Paralympics, he won four gold medals. He is representing China again at the 2008 Summer Paralympics. In his favorite event, the 50 m backstroke, he earned a silver, "outtouched" 0.15 seconds by Brazilian Daniel Dias. He's first gold came in 4X50m freestyle where China set a world record with a time of 2 mins 18.15 secs. A second world record and gold followed in the Men's 4 x 50m Medley 20pts. He Junquan has no arms. He has stated that, having to hit the edge of the pool with his head to stop the chronometre, he frequently scratches his scalp and hurts his back and neck. Reporting on the competition at the 2008 Games, Will Swanton of the Sydney Morning Herald wrote: "The Water Cube has been a sight for sore eyes. China's He Junquan, with no arms, was leading the 50m backstroke final. He approached the wall with a narrow lead. Every person in the stadium who had feet was on them. There was an almighty din, red Chinese flags everywhere. He came to the finish - and had to crash into the wall with his head. Excerpt: 200 m: 1st (2008) 400 m: 1st (2008)Oscar Leonard Carl Pistorius (born 22 November 1986) is a South African Paralympic runner. Known as the "Blade Runner" and "the fastest man on no legs", Pistorius is the double amputee world record holder in the 100, 200 and 400 metres (sport class T44) events and runs with the aid of Cheetah Flex-Foot carbon fibre transtibial artificial limbs by Ossur. In 2007 Pistorius took part in his first international able-bodied competitions. However, his artificial lower legs, while enabling him to compete, generated claims that he has an unfair advantage over able-bodied runners. The same year, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) amended its competition rules to ban the use of "any technical device that incorporates springs, wheels or any other element that provides a user with an advantage over another athlete not using such a device". It claimed that the amendment was not specifically aimed at Pistorius. After monitoring his track performances and carrying out tests, scientists took the view that Pistorius enjoyed considerable advantages over athletes without prosthetic limbs. On the strength of these findings, on 14 January 2008 the IAAF ruled him ineligible for competitions conducted under its rules, including the 2008 Summer Olympics. This decision was reversed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on 16 May 2008, the Court ruling that the IAAF had not provided sufficient evidence to prove that Pistorius's prostheses give him an advantage over able-bodied athletes. Although eligible to compete in the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, Pistorius did not qualify for the South African team. Despite achieving third place and a personal best time of 46.25 seconds in the 400 metres in Lu... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=5729054 ... Read more

Product Description
The purpose of this book is to use sport as a vehicle to show the achievements of individuals with disabilities. With more than 600 colour photographs and 258 pages, this book shows the tremendous impact that a largely-volunteer group, the Paralympic movement, can have on society.

Gary McPherson, Chair of the Alberta Premier's Council on the Status of Persons With Disabilities, says, "The ripple of the disabled sports movement is immense. So many people have gained from it in the areas of rehabilitation, competitive sport, and better social conditions. If you are going to bring about social change, you need to do it in a positive way rather than in a negative way. Sport is a positive vehicle to show what can be done, and how it can be done."

The people profiled in the book are not only successful in the world of disabled sport -- many are elite athletes at the pinnacle of their careers -- they are successful in mainstream society as well. The strong message that comes through from those profiled is that those with disabilities can overcome the barriers they face. Dr. Steadward says of the special people he worked with, "They never thought that their disabilities would in any way limit their ambition, or their ability to participate in anything they wanted to do." Repeatedly the message is, "I can do so much more than I thought I could. The secret is to try."

The story of the Paralympic Games, second in size only to the Olympic Games, is the story of volunteers, thousands and thousands of volunteers, who over the years have made tremendous sacrifices to improve the lives of those with disabilities. It is the story of skilled professionals, whose research and commitment benefit not only athletes, but all people with disabilities. The development of specialized racing wheelchairs, for example, led to the improvement of design in regular wheelchairs. It is the story of people who are role models for those in every walk of life.As one of the slogans developed by Joey Reiman (Brighthouse Ad Agency) for the Atlanta Games says, "The Olympic Games are where heroes are made. The Paralympic Games are where heroes come."

This book is written to inspire. One reader may be a sports fan looking for photographs of elite athletic performances. Other readers might be those who find themselves suddenly disabled, or families looking for reassurance that their efforts can make a difference in the life of a loved one with a disability, or discouraged volunteers who need to see that they can make a difference. This book helps all its readers see their own potential with new clarity.

Profits from the book will be used to further spinal cord research, rehabilitation, awareness, and education through the Rick Hansen Centre at the University of Alberta. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring & Awesome
For anyone who was born with a disability, this book will inspire you to never give up on your dreams. For anyone else, this book reminds you that those of us with physical limitations do not always live up to lowered expectations. It is truly amazing what the people in this book have accomplished, especially considering the physical problems they have overcome. My favorite section was the personal profiles of the athletes with their photos and accomplishments. The people in this book are truly leaders in paving the way in changing what makes someone successful - persistence and determination.
