3-0 out of 5 stars Wierd, Unexpected, and Old Bowling Stories
Copyright 1994, 94 pages.Cross "Ripley's Believe Or Not..." with a trip to the National Bowling Hall of Fame and Museum and you get this book.Lightly illustrated by Paul Coker. This book is the same size as "101 Uses For A Dead Cat", 5.5 inches tall and 8.25 inches long.Like Ripley's, some stories are gems but many are not. Most stories are several paragraphs long.Chapter 1 tales include hitting the 7-10 pins only on the 1st ball (1945); and 7,8,9,10 (1972) and 1,2,5,9 only on the 1st ball (1960).Other highlights are; don't slam your ball on the sidewalk because it can bounce back up and hit you in the chin,(1962) and if your principal reads the newspaper, you shouldn't win $1000 bowling a 300 during morning school hours (1993).The best story is "Mr. 900" which gives some detail to Glen Allison's July 1, 1982, 3 game 900 series which I knew little about apart from the fact he did it.I didn't know that when Pete Weber 1991 crystal trophy crashed to the floor, it was supposed to be glued to the wooden base which Pete still had in his hand.Bowling Hustlers, (M/F); doctored balls, (several soaker ball stories); and doctored lanes are covered. Near 300 games are covered. On your last ball, knocking down 9 pins and the top half of the 10th pin does not get you an ABC sanctioned 300 game, (1905).If you find Brunswick's (1915) missing Mineralite ball No. 391914, you've probably hit the jackpot... ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Earl Anthony's Bowling Book
Old book written by Champion Earl Anthony covers the bowling "how to's".A little outdated but very informative.Throughout the book Earl gives very specific advice and details for throwing a great ball with the proper form. But in the end, he says however unconventional your style is, if it works then stick with it.So I am.

5-0 out of 5 stars Earl the Pearl gave great advice
Earl Anthony was the greatest bowler of all time, in my opinion. He won 41 P.B.A. titles, 2 A.B.C. Masters titles, and 7 Senior Tour titles.Ranking second is Walter Ray Williams, Jr.So let Anthony teach you how to bowl. This book was written by a lefthander, but a lot of the negatives of the pictures were flipped so it appears that Anthony is bowling right-handed.

I received Earl Anthony's Championship Bowling for Christmas in 1984.Great book. With co-author Dawson Taylor, Anthony teaches the basics - footwork, timing, armswing, release, follow-through, and the mental game.He also teaches spare shooting, including split making.Specifically, Anthony talks about The Seven Fundamentals of Championship Bowling - relaxation, rhythm and timing, squareness to the line and ability to hit the target, correct ball fit and ball balance, application of squeeze action, consistent wrist action and full follow-through, and speed control.I learned a lot by reading this book. The secret to bowling well is fundamentals, believe me.Not some fancy bowling ball with a half ounce of side weight or some fancy wrist device.FUNDAMENTALS.He also talks about how to correct faults in your game, how to practice, and one of my favorite topics of all - THE ETIQUETTE OF BOWLING.Yes, that's right - PROPER ETIQUETTE.How many of you serious bowlers out there have been DISTRACTED by people who don't know proper bowling etiquette? You know what I mean - you're practicing and you're on the approach ready to take your first step and some idiot on the lane next to you runs up there with total disregard for you and distracts you, forcing you to step off the approach and start your routine all over again. And the saddest thing of all is that this idiot doesn't even know that they distracted you. They're totally oblivious to it.It happens to every bowler. When this happens to me, I almost turn into Marshall Holman. It drives me NUTS.Holman is one of the greatest bowlers of all time and a fierce competitor and I don't blame him one bit for all the times he got distracted on television.I can relate to it.

So there.....this chapter makes Earl Anthony's Championship Bowling a COMPLETE book that really is all you need to learn how to bowl and improve your game.Myself, I'm a self-taught bowler with an unorthodox style (almost a carbon copy of Holman's game), but I periodically refer back to this book whenever I'm in a little slump or just need a refresher course.I highly recommend this great book. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars This Secret is Out of the Bag
As the bowling host at BellaOnline.com, I read everything I can about the game. This book is as basic as they come. It includes a lot of photos that help give understanding, although they are a bit dated.

If you have never bowled before, are using a ball without a special composition, drilled normally, you can learn the basics from this little book. Dawson Taylor bowled 194 average om the 50's when that meant something. With today's lane and ball composition, many of the techniques he employs will suffice, but won't really put you in the game. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A brief history of bowling.
I never thought in a million years that I would end up an avid bowler; but that all changed when my younger brother began participating in Special Olympics bowling. I try to show up as often as possible to his games to cheer him on and a couple of times after his practice I played a few additional practice games with him for fun. Wouldn't you know it, I eventually caught the bug and I have been bowling ever since.

I saw this miniature book at the book store and decided to buy it in order to learn a little more about the game. Although the book is a short read, it is a well informed and interesting look at the history of bowling, complete with some really cool retro art work and pictures. It includes sections on `Innovations,' `Bowling Around the World,' `The Greats,' `Bowling Culture,' etc. This would make the perfect small gift - especially as a stocking stuffer - for anyone who loves the sport. ...
