Product Description
The quoit brooch style, a decorative style of animal and geometric motifs, is unique to southern England in the fifth century AD, with the greatest concentration of such items occurring in Kent. Suzuki defines the style through an analysis of its design organisation, and, by comparing it with near-contemporary styles in England and on the continent, he identifies those features which make it unique. He argues that the quoit brooch style was made and remade as part of the process of construction of new group identities during the political uncertainties of the time, and sets the development of the style in the context of the socio-cultural dynamics of an emergent post-Roman society. The rigorous archaeological analysis of the style and the study of its historical implications in the light of written sources illuminate the wider issues of social interaction in a period of change, and the formation of cultural identity.SEIICHI SUZUKI did his Ph D in linguistics at the University of Texas at Austin, his MA in medieval studies at the University of York, and he is currently Professor of English and Germanic Studies at Kansai Gaidai University, Japan. ... Product Description
Report on three seasons of excavation conducted in advance of gravel extraction in 1972, 1973 and 1988 at the Devil's Quoits circle-henge monument near Stanton Harcourt in Oxfordshire. While the stones have gone, evidence has been uncovered for the complete plan. The stratigraphy of the henge ditch (including analysis of sediments and soils) is described. Investigations in the interior uncovered very little pottery but struck flint and animal bone was found. The construction and significance of the monument is discussed. A gazetteer and review of local pre-Iron Age sites places it in its ancient context, while proposals for its preservation and partial reconstruction as a cultural amenity look to its future. ... Carn Brea Castle and Monument are visible at the top of the hill.Carn Brea (Cornish: ) is a civil parish and hilltop site in Cornwall, United Kingdom. The hilltop site is situated approximately one mile (1.6 km) southwest of Redruth. The earliest Neolithic settlement at Carn Brea was a tor enclosure occupied between around 3700 and 3400 BC. A two acre (8,000 m²) inner enclosure was surrounded by a larger eleven acre (45,000 m²) one. The ramparts consisted of stone walls with an earth bank and ditch. Traces of fourteen platforms on which would have stood Neolithic long houses have been found by archaeologists within its ramparts along with pottery and flint artifacts. The site was excavated between 1970 and 1973 by Roger Mercer. A population of 100 to 150 people has been suggested. There is evidence that the occupants cleared the surroundings by burning away the undergrowth and removing stones to use the land for farming. The acid soils of the area precluded the preservation of any environmental evidence which would have provided more information on this aspect. Nearby outcrops of rock suitable for manufacture as axes would have contributed to the village's economy. Edge grinding stones, blanks and incomplete and finished axes found on the site indicate that the inhabitants were accomplished stoneworkers and traded their products to others. That the pottery found on the site appears to have come from a production centre almost 20 miles (30 km) to south in the present day parish of St Keverne further supports a complex economic network in the area.
