5-0 out of 5 stars Next best thing to a personal coach
The Complete Guide to Racewalking covers the whole gamut of racewalking from how to do it, to how to train, what to eat, how to compete and even discusses the physiology and psychology of walking.Racewalking differs from athletic walking, power walking or fitness walking. These are fast ways of walking for recreation or fitness.Racewalkingis an Olympic sport and has an official definition and rules by the USATF.Good racewalkers achieve amazing speed and endurance.

The author is a former cross country runner and has been a world class racewalker and coach for over 25 years. This book is the straight scoop.I got interested in racewalking because after years of running I developed knee and hip problems.Racewalking was reputed to be injury free and excellent exercise.I had attended a couple of racewalking clinics but still hadn't got the hang of it.I wanted a detailed description of racewalking technique and found it in this book. While there's no substitute for having an experienced racewalker show you in person how it's done, this book is the next best thing

5-0 out of 5 stars Dave's a Great Motivator
I bought this book based on the Amazon.com reviews and I was NOT disappointed. I wanted to learn how to walk faster and have been able to achieve my initial goals in the few months I have been following Dave's training and technique advice. The book is well written, has many amusing bits, so is a good read as well as being of immense practical value. I keep referring back to it over and over.

4-0 out of 5 stars for serious walkers
If you care about walking fast, and especially if you care about your place in walking races (judged racewalks or otherwise) then this book is for you.

This book isn't designed to sell anyone on walking as a sport; this is written for readers who already know that they want to spend time and effort into learning to walk fast.

There are sections on many of the aspects of walking; e. g. technique, drills to perfect technique, common racewalking errors, and a few workout schedules. The book is written in a conversational style. He also includes interviews with elite racewalkers.

There is also a handy chart which outlines:"if you have problem X, correct it with Y" which is VERY helpful; this helped me in getting zero cautions or redcards in my last 4 judged walks.

If there is a downside it is that some of the photos are a bit small; I'd also recommend that he upgrade his "poor technique" example photo to look a bit worse; perhaps he could use a photo of a thick-skinned novice walker.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book for beginners and elite
This book is chock full of information on how to racewalk. I have racewalked for 6 years, but found the information to be outstanding from training tips to stretching and flexibility drills. Walkerswho don'tactually compete in events would benefit from the information provided andwould become better, more efficient walkers. Runners would also benefitfrom learning the how to racwalk and use it as a cross-trainer. A highlyenjoyable read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great overview of Racewalking in the US
I've been to Dave's clinics, I've spoken with him personally, and reading "The Complete Guide to Racewalking Technique and Training" is just like having him right next to you, cracking jokes and commenting oneverything. If you do not have the option of working out with otherracewalkers regularly, definately pick up this book and re-read it a fewtimes. You'll always pick up something new. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars From a phantom to a race walker
I found the book, Racewalking, to be a wonderful introduction to the pulse quickening world of racewalking.

To be honest, besides wanting to get into shape through racewalking, I bought the book because of William Finley, the co-author.Why?Go rent Brian DePalma's 1975 movie, The Phantom of the Paradise, which Mr. Finley starred in.He was fantastic in that movie as the Phantom, and equally as wonderful as an author that introduced me to the sport of racewalking. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Boomerwalk
Good book that provides encouragement for anyone interested in staying fit and healthy but also likes the competition of other walkers. Good references to other racewlking websites and tips for stretching, walking techniques and short section on choosing shoes.

Competitive racewalking improved my life greatly as I could not play more rigorous sports anymore due to neck problems. The Racewalker Profiles should be helpful for people new to racewalking and give them encouragement. I usually finish in the top 3 of my age group every race I enter but as I tell others, win or lose my greatest enjoyment comes from racing against that little voice inside that says "quit". "Boomerwalk" helps give you the confidence to keep walking and enjoy the benefits you receive. You really feel good.

5-0 out of 5 stars good book...good info!
having racewalked in the past, I was encouraged by this book to get a jumpstart on beginning again...the author and publisher both took care of a printing error as soon as I emailed them. and Amazon came through beautifully as well...
if you are interested in racewalking ...and you should be....get this book!

2-0 out of 5 stars a little short on information and inspiration
At 101 pages, including the appendix, a little short on information. Best for someone without access to the internet, as the information in the book is easily found with a simple search. I also bought RACE WALK LIKE A CHAMPION by Jeff Savage along with the DVD and highly recommend those. Racewalking is difficult to learn from a simple description and the DVD is very helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
I have just finished reading BoomerWalk by Brent Bohlen and I highly recommend it to those who are thinking about or have just started to racewalk. This book is an easy to understand must read with a lot of great information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Miss the adrenaline rush of competition?Bohlen gives it back...
At 50 years old with aching knees due to years of tennis, running, racquetball, and basketball, I needed an alternative to fuel my competitive instincts, and keep my aging body in shape.Brent Bohlen's BoomerWalk gave me just what I needed on both fronts...racewalking.Bohlen clearly explains why boomers like me should take up racewalking. He breaks down the fundamentals of the art using excellent illustrations, offers training tips, then mixes in profiles of newbie and experienced competitive racewalkers, and their strategies for success. The book reminds me of Dave Pelz' Putting Bible.Everything you need to get off the couch and back in competition is in this book. If you're like me, your copy of Bohlen's book will never be far away.Save your knees!Try racewalking and get back in the game! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Racewalking, or race walking, is a long-distance athletic event. Although it is a foot race, it is different from running in that one foot must appear to be in contact with the ground at all times. Stride length is reduced, so to achieve competitive speeds, racewalkers must attain cadence rates comparable to those achieved by Olympic 400-meter runners-and they must do so for hours at a time since the Olympic events are the 20 kilometer race walk and 50-kilometer (31 mi) race walk. There are two rules that govern racewalking.[1][2] The first dictates that the athlete's back toe cannot leave the ground until the heel of the front foot has touched. Violation of this rule is known as loss of contact. The second rule requires that the supporting leg must straighten from the point of contact with the ground and remain straightened until the body passes over it. These rules are judged by the human eye, which creates controversy at today's high speeds. Athletes may sometimes lose contact for a few milliseconds per stride which can be caught on high-speed film, but such a short flight phase is undetectable to the human eye. ... Read more
