Product Description
One of the best tie-down calf ropers ever to come out of South Texas, Juan Salinas grew up on a 15,000-acre ranch near Laredo. He roped in Texas rodeos large and small from the mid-1920s to 1935. From 1936 to 1946, he followed the national rodeo circuit and competed from Texas to New York's Madison Square Garden. At the time, few if any other Mexican Americans competed in rodeo, and Salinas drew a lot of attention.

Salinas also operated his family's Texas ranch, where he ran cattle and raised prize roping quarter horses. Author Ricardo D. Palacios, Salinas's nephew, recounts the many tales his uncle told him--tales of life on the range and friendship with Gene Autry, going to Sally Rand's wedding reception, riding on the Rodeo Train, and sponsoring seven-time world champion tie-down calf roper Toots Mansfield.

The story of Juan Salinas is also the story of the people of Mexican origin who live on the ranches of the South Texas brush country. Strong, rugged, independent, and hard-working, their social and economic success has all too seldom been chronicled. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Read On an Interesting Cowboy
Juan Salinas is not one of the better known cowboys in the history of rodeo, but he should be. He was and is a legend in South Texas. His great-nephew, Ricardo Palacios, does a good job of telling the Salinas story, although at times he races through his uncle's life. But it is also hard to cram 90 years of living into 200 pages.

The book offers a good overview of the world of rodeo back in the 1930s, but the book would be a better read for rodeo fans if more detail could have been given to the stories regarding Salinas' exploits in the rodeo arena. Salinas was one of the greats during his era, but was best known as a horseman and roping horse trainer. This would have been an interesting area to explore. Also Toots Mansfield was one of the all-time great calf ropers and was a close friend and traveling partner with Salinas. I would have enjoyed more information about this relationship.

The book also offers a glimpse into the Hispanic culture on the Texas border and these stories play a bigger part in the book that Salinas' exploits in rodeo. At time it seems there is too much effort to include every name that Salinas ever encountered or dealt with, but still some interesting tidbits.

Palacios deserves credit for making the effort to preserve his uncle's legacy and stories. Salinas was a great role model and hopefully readers will find inspiration in his story. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
I have read both the 2 other books in the series and they are all wonderful in their own respects. Each very different but very grabbing, I have about 30 more pages left but I LOVE how it ends. Kinda tear jerking :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars What a series!
You know, it is not often that I read a series of books that draws my interest like this one has. Mike Flanagan brings a fresh, clean aspect to both the world of writing and of rodeos. The story line throughout the entire series is superbly written. Mike Flanagan brings out the personalities and emotions so well and you read each book as if you were there or wanted to be. The ending to this book is wonderful. I highly recommend it to everyone, regardless of what type book you enjoy. You will find it a rewarding experience. Congratulations, Mike, for another great book! I hope you continue the excellence.

5-0 out of 5 stars keep the the books comming
Good rodeo books are hard to find. I have had a hard time putting this book down as I did with the first two in this series. Each book starts where the last one left off and I like that and I hope it means there will be many more books to come in this series. 5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful series by Mike Flanagan
When I started reading "Cowboy Up!", the first in a Rodeo Riders series by Mike Flanagan, it was the first I had been exposed to his writings. I read the book and was amazed at his style of writing and smoothflow. I am now a fan of Mike Flanagan's books. His understanding of humannature is expressed in a great way in the way that he writes and hischaracters come alive and you wish that you were there, living it alongwith them. In "Rigged to Ride", his next installment, it evengets better. Mike continues with his principal characters, Jack and Clay, but now adds Tamara. He uses no curse words, uses no foul behaviorassociated with drinking or carousing, and just does a splendid job! Iwould say that he has my interest and I will purchase all of his books. Inthis story, there is a gambling syndicate involved with rodeoing and itintensifies as the book goes on. But also, in the midst of all thetroubles, Jack and Clay and Tamara, and a host of other noteablecharacters, do not respond with violence or hatred, but rather withcomposure. This is what really marks the book and Mike Flanagan's writingstyle. He has not bowed to the typical 90's style of writing, whichincludes cursing, violence and hatred, but rather a smooth flow of humanlove of the characters involved. Justice still gets served, but in a wholenew way, which may be unfamiliar to us today. You will absolutely love thisbook. Well done, Mike Flanagan!

4-0 out of 5 stars Another great rodeo adventure!
Clay Tory has turned pro in the rodeo circuit, riding saddle bronc, bareback and bull.He is working his way up the PRCA standings, traveling with good friend and surrogate father, Jack Lomas.Clay even has agirlfriend, barrel racer Tamara Allen.Everything should be perfect, butthe top rodeo contenders are suddenly the victims of pranks, keeping themfrom competing.Clay and Jack are suspicious, but it isn't until Clay isviciously attacked, his riding hand mangled, that serious investigationsbegin. The trail leads to a group of wealthy gamblers betting on thestandings, but which of them is organizing the escalating attacks?

Wow,Flanagan's done it again. This is number 2 in the Rodeo Riders series, onethat I hope has a long and healthy life.I was instantly drawn into Jackand Clay's lives, on and off the rodeo circuit. And Tamara is a fineaddition to the growing family of friends and associates.Cowboy up andget this book. You won't regret it! ... ...this is ok for a general overview but not worth getting for any in depth work...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Condition
I have to say that this is the best place to buy used books, I give them a 5 Star. Thanks again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy, reliable Isuzu repair manual
I recently bought an Isuzu, but found out later that Haynes had stopped publishing repair manuals for Isuzu years ago. Like many, I have been using Haynes as my preferred manuals for car repairs. Haynes' simple, easy to read, and picture-laden books are popular with many because they help make sometimes difficult repairs manageable.

I was surprised when I found Amazon carried a manual for my Isuzu. Apprehensive, too, however, about buying a Chilton's book: My experiences with Chilton books were terse and sometimes convoluted steps of repair. I had difficulty understanding and, thus, getting my repair completed. Professional mechanics swear to Chilton's, I swore at them.

Desperate, I bought the Chilton's Isuzu manual and, to my surprise, found it refreshingly easy to read. I later found out the book is indeed printed by Chilton/Haynes. So I know I was in for familiar reading. Once opened, the book's chapters are easy reference and the many photos and graphics make it a sure bet for shade tree mechanics and weekend do-it-yourselfers alike.

The manual covers Isuzu:

AMIGO
Pick Up (P'uP)
RODEO
TROOPER (BIG HORN)

All Isuzu/GM motors used during these years, including 1.8, 2.0, 2.2, 2.3, 2.6, 2.8, 3.1, and 3.2 liter motors to include diesel variants. (The 3.5L motor and Hombre models are not covered in this book)

Here is a breakdown of this book's Chapters:

1. General Info and Maintenance
2. Engine Electric
3. Engine and Engine Overhaul
4. Drivability and Emissions Control
5. Fuel System
6. Chassis Electrical
7. Drive Train
8. Suspension and Steering
9. Brakes
10. Body and Trim

I recommend this book this book to those who are both familiar or would like to save some money repairing their cars themselves. The Chilton's 1981-1996 Isuzu Repair Manual is worth every cent!

4-0 out of 5 stars Item was as described.
The seller gave an accurate assesment of the condition of the book. Also the seller mailed out the package very quickly. Thanks.

1-0 out of 5 stars Excercise In Frustration
I agree with the other reviewers, which makes it unanimous so far. This book is useless. Here is a good example, I only bought this book so I could locate my "engine Coolant Sensor" on my 1994 3.2L Isuzu Rodeo. I found two brief spots in the book that mention this sensor. The two pictures of the sensor were blurry, B&W, dark pictures of a mystery 2.8L engine, which of course is nothing like mine. The instructions are even worse.

"Step 1: Remove the coolant sensor"

Wow that helps.

From what I hear, you are better off spending three times as much for the Helm OEM service manual which will at least only cover two years of the same models this one does. I've heard the Helm version has way more pictures and is more complete as well. Just stay away from this thing and you'll be doing yourself a favor. ... Read more

Product Description

William Kittredge's relationship to the spare, often unforgiving Western landscape is fraught with contradictions. Having grown up on a cattle ranch in Oregon, he has an intimate connection to the vast landscape that was once vital to his family's trade. He has also witnessed, over many decades, the depletion of the West's natural resources due to overuse. These luminous essays move effortlessly from the personal to the political. With grace and integrity, Kittredge directly confronts the myths that lie at the heart of the Western experience: male freedom and female domesticity, the wild and the tame, self-interest and the love of the land.

On the heels of Kittredge's first novel, The Willow Field, published to wide critical acclaim in 2006, we are pleased to offer the best of his nonfiction writings.

4-0 out of 5 stars Living in the Past and Embracing the Future
Who better to describe the Westerner condition than William Kittredge. Not only is he one of the West's most celebrated writers but is the son of a rancher from southeastern Oregon. Kittredge inherited his father's ranch and stuck it out until he hit 33 when headed off to study and teach creative writing first in Iowa and then Montana.

Kittredge's homeland is not the kind of place where most family car loads whizzing through the vast expanses stop to take in the scenery. Such perspectives make it difficult to garner public sentiment in favor of, not only protecting desert ecosystems, but also convincing the public that such places are an important part of our western tradition.

A good writer, however, has the ability to consistently re-evaluate his circumstances. Kittredge makes no bones about what's been lost, in part, due to his own father who "got his hands on a paradise of waterbirds and fertility, and ... remade it into what he understood as useful, a sprawling system of irrigation and drainage canals and agribusiness fields." While he is driving along the Salmon River on a cold solitary night thinking about the paradigm between the loss of salmon and grizzly bears and our inertia to do anything about it he says: "[i]n wintertime moonlight, the icy Sawtooth Range was aglow under a swirling sky. I contemplated the serious, classical, fool-making mysteries. How to proceed? Can it be true we suffer from a nostalgia for which there is no remedy on earth?"

Kittredge's genius lies in his ability, in a few short sentences, to, not only put you right inside of the writer's mind when they reflect on their experience, but allow you to visualize just what he is seeing, almost as if you where there. Most of all, he brings home the inherent conflict experienced by all of us who are deciding whether to hang on to the past or to embrace the new west.

Product Description

The most famous rodeo champion of all time tells his amazing true story -- and opens a fascinating window into the world of the professional cowboy.

Ty Murray was born to be a rodeo star -- in fact, his first words were "I'm a bull rider." Before he was even out of diapers, he was climbing atop his mother's Singer sewing machine case, which just so happened to be the perfect mechanical bull for a 13-month-old. Before long, Ty was winning peewee events by the hatful, and his special talent was obvious...obvious even to a man called Larry Mahan. At the time the greatest living rodeo legend, six-time champion Mahan invited a teenaged Ty Murray to spend a summer on his ranch learning not just rodeoing but also some life lessons. Those lessons prepared Ty for a career that eventually surpassed even Mahan's own -- Ty's seven All-Around Championships.

In King of the Cowboys, Ty Murray invites us into the daredevil world of rodeo and the life of the cowboy. Along the way, he details a life spent constantly on the road, heading to the next event; the tragic death of his friend and fellow rodeo star Lane Frost; and the years of debilitating injuries that led some to say Ty Murray was finished.

He wasn't. In fact, Ty Murray has brought the world of rodeo into the twenty-first century, through his unparalleled achievements in the ring, through advancing the case for the sport as a television color-commentator, and through the Professional Bull Riders, an organization he helped to build.

In the end, though, Ty Murray is first and foremost a cowboy, and now that he's retired from competition, he takes this chance to reflect on his remarkable life and career. In King of the Cowboys, Ty Murray opens up his world as never before. ... Read more
