Excerpt: Roller derby is an American-invented contact sport and historically, a form of sports entertainment based on formation roller skating around an oval track, with points scored as two individual players (designated as "jammers") lap members of their opposing teams whilst both teams play offense and defense simultaneously. In past decades, roller derby had primarily been a professional or paid sport for both women and men. Contemporary roller derby is international and predominantly female with over 500 women's leagues in 16 countries, typically operates on an amateur (or unpaid) circuit, and has a strong do it yourself ethic which often features both athleticism and a punk third-wave feminism aesthetic. The term roller derby dates at least as far back as 1922, when the Chicago Tribune used it to describe multi-day, flat-track roller skating races, similar to banked-track marathons reported on by The New York Times in 1885 (a six-day race) and 1914 (a 24-hour championship), among others. Product Description
The 1950s phenomenon of Roller Derby is back in full force, and it's definitely not your grandma's game anymore. With leagues in more than one hundred cities across the country, a national tournament, and major sponsors, the new wave of the sport has gone mainstream. No one is better qualified to tell the story of Flat Track Derby's astronomic rise than Melissa "Melicious" Joulwan. As a founding member of the Texas Rollergirls -- the league that launched the sport and the reigning national champions -- she has helped redefine what it means to be stylish, sporty, and sexy.

With her mouthy, tough-as-nails style, Melicious recounts her best tales from the track: her fierce rivalries with The Wrench and Ivanna S. Pankin, the scene at the annual national tournament, the thrill of a bout, and the infractions that so often bring her to the penalty box. From the minute she first laced up her skates and wrapped herself in her alter ego, Roller Derby has given her a confidence boost, and she shares the positive impact the sport has also had on girls -- young and not-so-young -- who tack posters of her on their bedroom walls and lace up their own skates.

Complete with photos and suggestions on how to develop a Rollergirl name and persona, this unprecedented tell-all comes from the woman who's watched the sport evolve from an underground Friday-night event to a bona fide national phenomenon. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun Informative Read
I bought this book just before buying a pair of beginner skates and deciding that roller derby might be just what I want to do.

I wanted a firsthand account of starting derby out of nowhere from newbie to veteran.

More or less, this is what I got.The fresh meat part wasn't as thorough as I'd hoped, but it was still nice to get some insight.

The writing is fun and light, and its an easy read to just keep turning the page, turning the page.Melicious has a great sense of humor and really adds personality to the book (as if it could possibly be lacking when its about derby girls!!)

I totally reccomend the book, and as a plus it comes with a lot of pics and some background on how the flat track derby league was started.

I also reccomend watching "Hell on Wheels" to understand the work and trials that the original derby gal's overcame in order for the sport to bew what it is today.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of very few books I've finished lately... period.
Loved it. Read it. If you don't skate it will make you want to start, if you do it will make you want to skate better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cute, interesting book.
Nice book on history of present wave of roller derby. Cute memoir. Good for anyone having interest in subject matter, probably not so much for you if you don't like roller derby or memoirs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Academic Use
Rollergirl: Totally True Tales from the Track is a wonderful supplementary text for a course in Sociology or Psychology of Sport. It is a well-written narrative of one woman's experience with flat-track roller derby. This experience is framed within the history of the sport and laced with details of the sport's re-emergence.Insights are provided into the role of the skater's persona, team identity, and the relationships between the fans and the skaters. While this book is an interesting work in and of itself, it provides a unique learning experience for students of sociology, psychology, and kinisiology. It may also have some interest to students in women's studies.

4-0 out of 5 stars Totally awesome tales from the track ....
Any roller derby gal starting a league or joining a league should get ahold of this book - and roller derby enthusiasts should be just as intrigued. Melicious from the Texas Rollergirls (flat track association) tells her roller derby saga - from watching her first bout, to joining the Bad Girls Good Woman league to the split in factions and subsequent formation of the Texas Rollergirls and Texas Lonestar Roller Derby Girls. Anyone interested in the Woman's Flat Track Roller Derby Association (WFTDA) could also benefit from this book, as it tells the tale of how the whole dang flat track revolution started. An easy read from front to back, Rollergirl Totally True Tales From the Track, was worth every penny. ... Read more

Product Description
Charlotte Goodman has had enough surprises.

In fact, she reached her life’s quotient when her husband of five months walked out on her, only to abruptly change his mind a few weeks later and move back in. Stung by a whiplash of grief, resentment, and confusion, Charlotte calls a time-out, taking a small apartment where she can figure out what she wants. Instead, the thought of making even the simplest choices triggers an anxiety attack. In order to get out of bed in the morning, she must concoct a to-do list for each day, The Plan, one with absolutely no surprises.

“Without The Plan, horrible things can happen. I’m likely to end up sitting on a curb beside a taco truck on Sunset Boulevard, crying over a carne asada burrito, wondering where my marriage went. I can’t handle being the Weeping Burrito Girl.”

Charlotte knows all this self-absorbed introspection isn’t good for her, but she’s running out of people to turn to, as seemingly everyone in her life is pressuring her to make an immediate decision about her future. Then her new friend Francesca—an impulsive, smartass co-worker—offers Charlotte salvation in the unlikeliest of places: the fast-paced, super-tough, bump-and-bruise-filled world of roller derby.

Sure, it’s dangerous. Yeah, she could get hurt. But what’s a little physical pain when healing your soul is at stake? The question is: whether she’s on or off the track, will Charlotte be strong enough to stand on her own two feet?

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved this book!!!!
I really enjoyed this one. It's touching and funny and I just couldn't put it down. Now I'm sad I finished it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Cute chicklit
I don't usually read chicklit, but I read Pamela Ribon because I enjoy her blog and her sense of humor.

This book didn't charm me as much as "Why Girls are Weird" did. Granted, the subject matter is a little dark -- the protagonist, Charlotte, is in limbo as she decides whether to try to reconcile with her estranged husband. She gets pretty depressed, and eventually reveals the what the low point of the marriage was.

Unfortunately, none of it seems horrible enough, and Charlotte comes across as whiny and needing to just snap out of it and get on with her life. The secondary characters (Charlotte's coworkers, one of whom has a Skype boyfriend & drafts Charlotte into a roller derby team, the other of whom has unexpectedly impregnated his wife and is dealing with imminent & possibly unwanted fatherhood) are more interesting and well-rounded than Charlotte.

Ultimately, the book is not terribly nuanced, but it's a fun read for anybody who likes chickbooks or Pamie's online writing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal!
I stumbled onto this book out of place on the bookshelf in WalMart(ugh-i know)
But it was karma. I am at the beginning of a divorce myself and how she describes being overwhelmed by confusion and indecision and not trusting one's self, etc. It just really rang true for me. (I even met a derby girl recently.) I am a complete klutz but would be willing to risk broken tailbone and trade a (please it can't be soon enough) EX husband for a derby wife anyday- esp if she is like Francesca! Even calling off the jam was the same. Thank you Pamela Ribon for writing such an amusing read about something that can be so painful. Great characters, action, storyline, etc., humor and flow. I have not read your other books but look forward to doing so in future!

3-0 out of 5 stars Quick, unsatisfying read.
I was excited to discover a book about roller derby, I thought it would offer a peek into an interesting subculture.

But, I found the first half of the book was about a woman who whined incessantly about her ex-husband.I couldn't wait to get to the part when the character would predictably discover roller derby and become transformed.

When we finally get there, we endure page after page of the same character whining about all the bruises she got from skating. She simply substituted emotional pain with physical pain, and one bad relationship with another.

The book kept me entertained for a weekend, but it lacked substance, interest, and was mostly just depressing. The book would have been better if it had more deeply explored the skating culture, and/or we saw greater character transformation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your next favorite book
Pam Ribon is a great writer.Reading her book is like hanging out with your best friend over coffee at your favorite cafe.In this, her third novel, she goes deeper than ever before. While chick-lit has a reputation of being on the vapid, predictable side, this story takes us into a real breakdown and a real putting back together of a very real-feeling life. It's sweet and inspiring. It's grown-up and funny simultaneously.Refreshing. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Semka:the Sammy Skobel Story written by Sammy
I would reccommend this book to ANYONE but especially to parents and their children. This is truly a book for young and old.

I have the privledge of having known Sammy since I was a kid in Mount Prospect, Ill and I have never met a more determined, hard working and dedicated man in my life.I remember the first time I walked into his little hot dog shop across from the middle school that I went to and ordered one of his great tasting dogs and saw him at the grill with his face only inches from the hot surface and I did'nt know untill later that he was legally blind. This book is a story of courage and determination beyond belief and I would recommend buying several and giving them as gifts to family and friends.I talked with Sammy and his wonderful wife about a year ago as he still lives in Mount Prospect and even then I learned things about this wonderful man that was not in his book. This is one of the top 3 books I have ever read and I am 59 and love to read.

You won't believe what this man has accomplished in his life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blind Ambition
This is an incredible story of love and determination.Sammy Skobel lost most of his vision at the age of four due to Scarlet Fever. He went on to be a star skater in the Roller Derby during its peak on prime-time television in the late 40's and 50's, until retiring in 1965.Legally blind, Sammy fooled many of his colleagues for years.A great story about overcoming a disability. ...
