5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
An excellent publication. Diagrams are well thought out, giving all the steps required to complete a move along a timeline. The writing style and use of humour in the text and illustrations makes reading and learning fun, and the author really captures the inner thoughts of a beginning skater as he prepares to execute a move, making the reader feel comfortable with trying them. I keep the book with me and review a page or two now before I skate to hone my skills. Thanks for an excellent publication!

4-0 out of 5 stars William Nealy's cartoon style makes In-Line skating fun.
This hilarious, way of teaching rollerblading makes skating fun.The cartoons are very explicit and cover every conceivable way of skating, safety, skate maintenance and techniques.Even though the language may be a little vulgar it is by all means a comprehensive and detailed way on learning and improving your In-line skating.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good investmentfora beginner
This book can't be read and understood at one sitting. If you do try to read at one sitting as beginner or low intermediate skater you will certainly miss many subtle points.

I have read this book about 4 times, nearly cover-to-cover as I needed to be reminded of different points or I didn't fully read the points indicated. Of course if I were a good skater I wouldn't be doing this. There are moves I still don't understand but that's ok as I am a long way from that level at the moment
The lack of photos instead of diagrams was disappointing, but now I think diagrams are better as, there are so many and the labeling is extensive.
This book wont makes you a great skater. You need an instructor for that, but as a guide it is excellent.
I would have preferred a more-structured layout in terms of points to remember and perhaps a greater depth of explanation of subtle points.Having said that I doubt you will go wrong buying this bookgiven the audience it targets.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Graphic Novel and Inline Primer
Sorry earlier reviewers, but I totally and unequivocally disagree that the handwriting makes this book hard to read.In my opinion, the handwriting makes it more fun and more flexible to read when the author wants to stress something textually. The whole book reads like a graphic novel and Nealy does a decent job drawing and explaining the basics of edges and glides, which I think are often illustrated poorly in other books. He also thoroughly explains and illustrates more advanced stops, turning, spins, backwards skating, and cooler, potentially-aggressive moves. There's also a cute, informative skate maintenance section at the back.Honestly, people, most skate books only cover the basics or do some overview of the skating world in general.I think this one's a winner - it goes over a great selection of topics. Based on the opening humor in the cartoons on pages roman numeral five and eleven, it is apparent that the book is not meant for innocent young minds to ponder. But give the author a break - plenty of books go over the basics in an easy-for-kids format. This one is for teens/adults who want to really know a lot of information about technique and don't just want to roll.

2-0 out of 5 stars Contains Unnecessarily Vulgar Language
The book uses plenty of detailed sketches to provide all of the techniques you'll need to know, and then some. The content of the book is more than sufficient to enable someone to become a proficient inline skater, and is easily understandable.Unfortunately, the book is equally thorough in its use of profanity, making it unsuitable for my kids to see.A book about skating that is too profane for kids to see? Give me a break . . . ... Read more

Product Description
On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on ice skates, roller skates, and skating boots with attached skates in Australia face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying ice skates, roller skates, and skating boots with attached skates to Australia? How important is Australia compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of ice skates, roller skates, and skating boots with attached skates vary from one country of origin to another in Australia? On the supply side, Australia also exports ice skates, roller skates, and skating boots with attached skates. Which countries receive the most exports from Australia? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for ice skates, roller skates, and skating boots with attached skates in Australia. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for ice skates, roller skates, and skating boots with attached skates for those countries serving Australia via exports, or supplying from Australia via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where Australia fits into the world market for imported and exported ice skates, roller skates, and skating boots with attached skates. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for Australia in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that Australia is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize Australia compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not deep; doesn't always flow through concepts
I'm new to inline skating and I'm looking for a book to get me started. Myexperience with ice skating and skiing is helping me. I'm looking for abook to, "take me to the next level."

This is a good book, butit isn't that.

There are some good pictures that show how to do certainmaneuvers in time lapse. That helps. However, sometimes illustrationsrather than pictures are the most effective means to get a concept acrossto the reader.

The written descriptions on how to do certain things, suchas a Y-stop, are good, but not always thorough enough. It would help if theauthor would build up to certain tasks.

For example, the author mightteach certain points about turning, which could then be used to form thefoundation of a Y-stop.

Learning is about developing a foundation andbuilding on that foundation. Too much in this book was independent ofeverything else I need to learn. I just didn't come away feeling that I hadmoved to the next level because of this book.

Don't get me wrong, Ilearned quite a bit. However, this book wasn't as thorough as I had hoped.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for beginner skaters
If you are enthusiastic about inline skating, you probably want to read everything about it you can get your hands on.I have read 3 or 4 books so far.I have learned at least something good-to-know from each one -- this one included. It's cheap enough -- order it and read it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good look at a time past.
This is an absorbing story for young people....with much for a grownup to find important. Not a new book, but fresh.Lucinda learns some hard truths, grows a great deal in her special year.

3-0 out of 5 stars Boring, not exciting
Roller Skates is very boring. I didn't have any interest in it at all. I didn't really want to finish the book, but I had to. I wouldn't suggest this book for kids, but adults might enjoy it more. If you have to read this book, like me, then try to make it more interesting. It takes place in the 1800's, so I think that could be part of the problem. Don't get this book if you're under 13.

3-0 out of 5 stars Boring
I think this is not a good book for kids. It is so boring. I've been reading the reviews that are posted and most kids say it is boring and adults (or at least above 13) say it is okay-good. I say if you are a kid never read this book unless you have to.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful, sensitive - a true classic
I've never been to the Big Apple, but I wish I could visit the Old New York explored by gallant Lucinda in her magical "orphan" year, rather than the modern one. It is sad to think that the statue of Diana that Lucinda loved, proudly standing watch over Madison Square Garden, is now gathering dust in a museum...
And I must say I am baffled by reviewers who feel that Lucinda is not touched or affected by the two tragedies that darken her life during the course of the narrative. This is one of the most realistic and moving accounts of a child's reaction to death - frightened, confused yet bravely hopeful - that I have read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting View of 1890's New York City
I just finished listening to the recorded version of this book with Kate Forbes as narrator--she did a great job.Overall, I liked this book.I admit that some of the depictions of people are not exactly politically correct in the 21st century, but you have to remember that this was a book written in 1936 about the 1890's, and that's the way people thought back then. The bigger picture is that in most ways, the main character, Lucinda, transcends these barriers of class and befriends people that her snobby family wouldn't approve of.Also, there's a very touching part at the end of the book that explains how Lucinda was an unwanted fifth child in her family, that her family considered her homely and unladylike; yet she managed to rise above these hurtful attitudes and become herself--not what other people wanted or expected her to be.I think this is a great message for children, or for adults for that matter.I don't know why the murder part was included in the story--it did seem somewhat out of place. This book would probably be read by an 11 or 12 year old; and in this day and age, the murder will seem very tame. ... Book Description
Sebastian didn't talk very much, even though he had a lot to say. He wanted to tell the barber not to make his head look like a billiard ball. He wanted to tell his neighbors that he hadn't grown all that much. And he wanted to ask Ester, the little girl who sat in front of him at school, if she wanted to be friends. But he couldn't. He couldn't say any of those things. Sebastian was shy. He was very shy.

And then one day he finds an old pair of roller skates in the park. Roller skating is hard to learn, but if you practice, and practice, and practice, and then if you forget about worrying, and forget about falling and just skate, well, everything changes.

And sometimes if you forget about worrying and forget about blushing and just talk, well, everything changes again. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "...You Got A Brand New Key"
Sebasstian is a "tweener."He's way past elementary school age (especially in his own mind), but not yet a real teen either. People don;t know what to make of him, and he doesn't always know what to make of himself. Saying what he really feel doesn't come easy: The neighbors tell him how tall he's become, "and Sebastian would look at the floor, nod his head, and blush. (Really, what is one SUPPOSED to say to such self-evident remarks?) THe barber asks him if he likes his haircut.Sebastain whispers, "fine," but he really think his head looks like a bolwing ball, and that the barber better not to THAT again. At school, Sebastian knows the capitals of Burundi, Iceland, and Mongolia, but he doesn't answer the teacher's questions. Perhaps Sebastian's disconnect between thought and expression concerns his feelings for Ester--curly-haired, honey-eyed.He'd never even spoken to her.

One day, while walking home through the park, Sebastian finds some abandoned roller skates. He tries, he immediately falls, and he concludes, "Skating is not for me." However, the next day can stand on them before falling. At this point, author Joan de Deu Prats could have gone onward and upward, tracing Sebastian's slow but sure development into a sure-footed skater. Fortunately, she's more talented than that: Yes, Sebastian slowly improves, but when he sees skaters better than him, he's stops and goes home.

They say that necessity is one Mother of Invention (Frank Zappa is another), but here it's a runaway dog who inspires Sebastian. Grabbing the running dog's leash, he's in the zone, bounding across a bridge and jumping a ditch, Before he realizes it, Sebastian has "skated through the whole park!" Without even trying, almost Zen-like, Sebastian has mastered something without trying to master it.Sebastian's formerly grey mood bursts into a collage, they fill the lobby of his apartment complex, and pour out of his mouth as he speaks. Even though he's still a tweener, smaller--smaller than grown-ups, maybe not even noticed by him, Sebastian's confidence and perseverence have grown immeasurably.

Things come full circle at the conclusion:He TELLS the barber that he "doesn't want his head to look like a billiard ball," he answers tough geography questions, and, in his most important step, he asks Ester to go skating with him. Their eyes meet, she shyly agrees, and the page spills with orange, red, and purple hearts, light and free.'SEbastian' tackles a difficult age with skill and aplomb. Not only does De Deu Prats understand the tweener psyche, but she respects it without over-dramatizing.Of course, skating doesn't melt all tweener anxiety--no one thing could--but Sebastian's path implies that it's possible.SHe seems to suggest that adults shouldn't judge kids by their "cover,"--there's much more going on--and that adolescents shouldn't label themselves either...a change is gonna come. The drawings are open, colorful, and match the emotional content: Rovira superbly depicts thoughts and settings--the inside and the outside. This superb book will appeal to kids both younger and older than the pre-teen Sebastian.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adorable!
I have a shy little guy.An adorable story!!!!I thought it might be a little long for a 3 year old, but he sat through it and enjoyed it.Still, probably the right length for children ages 5 and up.

5-0 out of 5 stars A bright and hopeful book.
Young Sebastian is so shy that he barely speaks aloud, even though he has a lot to say. When he finds a pair of roller skates on a park bench, he practices with them for days. As his skating slowly improves, he also finds confidence to share his knowledge and feelings. The illustrations capture Sebastian's joy as his face and world brighten. Part of the book's charm is that change doesn't come immediately for Sebastian. He builds on small successes, and can hardly believe the wonderful changes in himself.

5-0 out of 5 stars An entertaining story about growth and self-discovery through applying oneself to a new talent
Sebastian's Roller Skates is an award-winning picturebook by Joan de Deu Prats about a very shy young boy who has a lot to say but can't bring himself to talk much. One day he finds a pair of old roller skates in the park - and as he tries them on and practices, he learns not only how to skate, but also much more! The whimsical color illustrations by Francese Rovira are the perfect complement to the entertaining story about growth and self-discovery through applying oneself to a new talent. Highly recommended.

On the supply side, Russia also exports ice skates, roller skates, and skating boots with attached skates. Which countries receive the most exports from Russia? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for ice skates, roller skates, and skating boots with attached skates in Russia. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for ice skates, roller skates, and skating boots with attached skates for those countries serving Russia via exports, or supplying from Russia via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where Russia fits into the world market for imported and exported ice skates, roller skates, and skating boots with attached skates. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for Russia in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that Russia is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize Russia compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes. ... Read more
