Product Description
Wisconsin Where They Row is the definitive history of rowing at the University of Wisconsin. Although this oldest of intercollegiate sports had its American beginnings in 1852 as a contest among Ivy League men, it would soon have to make room for the stubborn steadfastness of Wisconsin's athletes. Author Brad Taylor captures the unique character of Wisconsin crew and its athletes in this meticulously researched and abundantly illustrated book.Taylor recounts rowing's beginnings as the first UW intramural sport in 1874, the long and rich history of the men's crew, the establishment of the women's team in 1972, and the presence of Wisconsin rowers on every U.S. Olympic rowing squad since1968. Taylor tells of the UW men's victory in 1892 at Oconomowoc against the "Chicago Navy," their first competition against an outside club; the story of the famed Berry-Crate Crew; and the Badger crews' participation in the early intercollegiate regattas on the Hudson River. Taylor depicts how boats were shipped east by train; how one coach sacrificed most of his salary during the threadbare 1930s to keep the sport alive; and how thousands of spectators watched races from railroad flatcars and yachts.Taylor spent four years interviewing key figures, visiting race venues, and delving into the archives of college libraries, historical societies, and newspapers. The result is not only this book, but also a trove of information, rowing memorabilia, and some two thousand images of Wisconsin crew history that Taylor will donate to the University of Wisconsin archives and the new crew boathouse. Wisconsin Where They Row documents in detail an exciting story important to sports history, to Wisconsin's heritage, and to alums and fans of the Badger crew teams. It will appeal to anyone who thrills at the sight of oars flashing and shells skimming across blue water. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars History of the University of Wisconsin's sport of rowing
Wisconsin Where They Row: A History Of Varsity Rowing At The University Of Wisconsin by Bradley F. Taylor is an informed and informative history of the University of Wisconsin's intercollegiate sport of rowing that began in 1892 with their first non-intramural race and continued to a 113-year tradition. Wisconsin Where They Row fully captures the very spirit and richness of the Badger crews while recounting milestones in Wisconsin's rowing tradition, from their financial troubles and six-year suspension for health reasons, to their participation in the early intercollegiate regattas on the Hudson River, to the establishment of the women's team in 1972. Replete with anecdotes, vintage photos, and historical "infobits" (there has been a Badger on each Olympic crew team since 1968), Wisconsin Where They Row is "must" reading for Wisconsin history buffs, Wisconsin alums, and collegiate rowing fans.

Editorial Review

Product Description
ROWING IN EDENSam is not the only tormented soul in the tiny upstate village of Old Wickham. There's also Peter Quinn, a brilliant, troubled fourteen-year-old with quick fists, no past, and a truckload of attitude. Although a judge found him innocent, Peter knows better. Some things, he figures, "it don't matter why you did 'em, only that you did 'em."

On its surface, Old Wickham, New York, is a Norman Rockwell montage of red-cheeked youngsters skating on ponds, dogs frolicking in the snow, and villagers huddled around wood-burning stoves. Yet someone in this idyllic community has been setting fires. Suspicions divide the village along the usual fault lines. Scapegoats are sought, outsiders shunned. The back room of the country store gives rise to a Greek chorus of collective rage. In this crucible of distrust, unlooked for alliances are forged, old alliances are tested, and no one emerges unchanged.

Alice Hoffman hails Barbara Rogan as a "masterful story teller." The New York Times praises her as a passionate writer whose prose is "as vivid as lightning bolts." Now, with Rowing in Eden, a morally complex story about friendship, love, marriage, and family -- in other words, all the things that matter most -- Barbara Rogan not only fulfills but generously exceeds the expectations of fans and reviewers alike. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Moving Tale
Barbara Rogan paints an incisive portrait of life in small-town America, definitely not Norman Rockwell. Here are murderers, bigots, small-minded busybodies. Jane Goncalves and her foster children left the big city to escape these things, but find themselves embroiled in controversy and strife. Sam Rockwell exists in a shadowy purgatory of grief after losing his beloved wife to cancer. Sam and Jane come together in the face of adversity and form a deep bond, showing that the best families aren't necessarily related by blood.

4-0 out of 5 stars A moving story of unlikely bonds formed by tragic events.
Rowing in Eden is an insightful look at small town americana in the 1990's and of the darkness that lurks beneath the the post card exterior of the seemingly ideal town of Old Wickham. While parts of the story are predictable and the villains are, at times, somewhat one dimensional, what separates this story from others of its type are Rogan's rich drawings of the three main characters and the separate tragedies that unite them. Rowing in Eden is solemn, haunting, and yet a strangely uplifting story about love and hate, death and living, fear of the unknown, and bonds that form in adversity.Rowing in Eden is not a triumph of the human spirit spirit, but rather a testament to its perseverance. I strongly recommend this book to fans of slice-of-life fiction. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Rowing Calendar
I was DISAPPOINTED THAT IT DID NOT ARRIVE.YOU NEVER SENT IT

5-0 out of 5 stars 2002 better than 2001!
The 2002 edition is even better than last year's.Great photography and a knack for capturing the essence of our sport.I particularly liked the shot of the Marin D 8+ as I row in a D8+ myself.I'll be ordering 2003's FOR SURE!

4-0 out of 5 stars More excellent photography by Joel Rogers
Almost all rowers and their families know how difficult it is to take a great rowing photograph. Most professional photographers also fail as well (unless they take the cliche'd "sculler at dawn" or "sculler through the mist").

Joel Rogers has a gift for taking photographs that even the most experienced rower can admire and has once again put together a rowing calendar.

The photograph for June is alone worth the price of the calendar: it shows Bob Cummins leaning back at the finish of a stroke.Likewise the pictures of Jamie Koven in a single (September) and the Dutch double scull (February) which contrast the triangular geometry of the rigging with the random patterns in the water and the dynamism of their craft.

The August picture of a couple of amateur mixed crews is a disappointment for a rower like me, but may well have a wider appeal than the more technically interesting shots.

I'm already looking forward to the 2002 calendar, hoping that it contains pictures from the 2000 Olympics. On the basis of Joel's past work, I'll be ordering a few of his 2002 calendars when the time comes. ... Read more

Product Description
This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and export managers whose primary concern is the world market for yachts and other vessels for pleasure or sports including rowing boats and canoes. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics that appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for yachts and other vessels for pleasure or sports including rowing boats and canoes for those firms serving the world via exports and foreign direct investment. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models.

In what follows, this report begins by summarizing the world market for yachts and other vessels for pleasure or sports including rowing boats and canoes exports. The total level of exports on a worldwide basis is based on a model that aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market. These shares lead to a volume of export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each supplier and the destinations (countries served by the supplier country). From these figures, world rankings are calculated. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information for strategic planning purposes. ... Read more

I do so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners approaching the world market face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying inflatable vessels, inflatable rowing boats, and inflatable canoes? What is the dollar value of these imports? How much do the imports of inflatable vessels, inflatable rowing boats, and inflatable canoes vary from one country to another? Do exporters serving the world market have similar market shares across the importing countries? Which countries supply the most exports of inflatable vessels, inflatable rowing boats, and inflatable canoes? Which countries are buying their exports? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Rowing down two rivers
Poems are artistic artifacts of a poet at a moment of time, which also gives colour and slant to it.A poet writing in two languages is still a single poet. However he has two rivers flowing within him.If he feels that he should take out a boat and row down one of them, the poems may be in Malay but if he choose the other, then it would be in English. The person is the same and so are the experiences and the cumulative life.Yet language does not merely colour the expression of the poems but lends its special nature and character, though not totally excluding the influences of the other.Malay is a musical language, in which the meaning is traditionally spun by the metaphors and the alliteration. The great play of poetry is in timbre of the sounds and the subtle meaning they evoke. In comparison English is more direct and practical, but lends itself to so many styles and experiments.Rowing Down Two Rivers is a collection of Muhammad Hj Salleh's original English poems, which first appeared in Times and its People, and a translation of selected works from his eight Malay books
