4-0 out of 5 stars Clear and easy to read
A very interesting book with very clear explanations and a full comprehensible vocabulary. I am not an english speaking man, but I can understand almost the whole of the text withouth effort. And this although it is a technical mate. I recommend it to everybody with interest in rugby.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you want to know Ruby this is the book for you.
This review refers to the 2nd edition (2007).

If you have seen a few games and are lost, this is the book you want to get. It explains everything from the smallest detail to the history of the world cup. If you don't know the difference between a ruck and a maul or you have no idea what a pitch or a try is then buy this book. Everything is explained in a simple and easy to understand manner.

But then isn't that how all "for dummies" books are written? Well this one is written by people who play and know the game and have an idea how hard it can be for an American on the outside looking in to grasp the game.

I highly recommend this book for both those new to the game and those that have been just using Rugby as an excuse to pop down to the pub for a few pints.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rugby for this dummy
The very first time I saw a game rugby I thought "what a cool looking game". I was absolutly though clueless as to what on earth was goin on and why certain things happened, all I knew it was a lot of fun to watch. This was how it was for years until I got a copy of "Rugby for Dummies", I was very lucky to get my copy as I won it on the Fox Sports World short segment on the"Rugby Report" hosted by one of the authors; Brownie himself. Every Thursday he would read and answer a question concerning rugby that one of the viewers had sent in; if he read that persons question you'd get a free copy of the book; which is how I got mine.

This book is very well writen and easy to understand. After years in the fog knowing about this mystery sport, my eyes and understanding of this game have finally been opened and I now understand the hows and whys of this game I have come to love, thanks to this fantastic book! So a big thank you to Brownie, Guthrie and Growden for helping this dummy understand the great sport of Rugby!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative. A great resource book
The book was very informative. The book is great for all people, from those who don't know anything about rugby to those just looking for spare bits of information. The authors did a great job with their style as well, making the reader feel as if they were having a discussion with the authors, and giving the reader confidence in his/her rugby ability. It covers all areas of the game, from the rules, to techniques, to training, to the public world of rugby. I recommend this book to anyone wishing to learn anything about the sport

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for newcomers
I am new to the world of Rugby. This book was great. It really breaks down a sport that, to me, looked like a bunch of men running in to each other.I have a much better idea of the game and it's history because of this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple
this is a real meat and potatoes book, which i think is a good thing.the worst thing about reading books about excersise is hearing about stuff that you dont need to know.this book is for people who have the time and desire to go to the gym at least 4 times a week.no half-hearted efforts here.
if you follow the book's schedule YOU WILL MAKE GAINS.this i think is the key to this books effectiveness.its not the lifts that he chooses or the number of sets/reps persay- if you have been lifting for sometime, most of the concepts will be pretty commen sense.he also leaves things open for you so your lifting sessions dont get stale.
I think one word sums this book up...simplicity.everything is done for you, you just need to have to drive to do it!

5-0 out of 5 stars extremely satisfied! Awesome workouts and advice!!
this book is very useful and is great when needing some extra info or just alternatives. i'm following the workouts in the book and am very pleased with how they translate to the field as well as just my overall health, fitness, and endurance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Program Guide
I have rarely seen such detail in such a small space.Gets right to the point with easy-to-follow concepts, instructions, and pictures.Online resources are also helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Edition is Way Better
I'm a multi sport athlete who trains all year round regardless of what sport I play. I bought a few of these Ultimate Guide to Weight Training books, and they definitely helped me train specifically for the different sports that I play. Then about a year later I received an email from amazon that there was a new edition out. These upgraded editions are even better than the originals, with more articles and a lot more sport-specific information. I would definitely recommend this series to anyone who plays a lot of sports or wants to specifically focus on training for one sport in particular.

4-0 out of 5 stars very informative
The illustrations are excellent. This book offers all the help you need to get started in your training for rugby. It even provides charts so you can keep a record of your progress. ... Read more

Book Description

The rugby union has undergone immense change in the past two decades—introducing a World Cup, accepting professionalism, and creating a global market in players. This resource covers all of the great matches, teams, and players while also placing them in the context of the social, political, and economic changes which have affected the course of rugby's development. International in scope, this history includes not only Britain and France but also the great rugby powers of the southern hemisphere and other successful rugby nations, such as Argentina, Fiji, and Japan. Rich in anecdotes—including the story of why 1895 is the most important date in both the rugby union and rugby league history, allegations of devil worship at a Welsh rugby club, the game's contribution to the Cuban Revolution, and why the most fearsome of all New Zealand forwards was also a proficient knitter—this reference is a must-read for any fan of the oval ball.

5-0 out of 5 stars Phenomenon book
So far i have found all the little details i needed to know about the game. Easy to follow presentation too, two thumbs way up.

2-0 out of 5 stars pretty book, but...
lots of nice colour pictures, but a little basic for all but the absolute beginner.

4-0 out of 5 stars great introduction for beginners
I play Rugby and this is a good book for someone ne to the game. It explains quite clearly the different tactics for different positions and has good photographs to show you It's really helpful for beginners of any age.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to player skills and roles
This book is a good introduction to the roles of the players and the skills they have to learn. It would be suitable for someone new to playing rugby and wanting an overview, or a spectator wanting to learn more about what they are watching. There probably isn't enough detail in the descriptions for players wanting to improve their technique.

The book is loaded full of colour photographs of rugby players in action, mostly from New Zealand domestic matches and international matches. One thing I would have liked is more diagrams supporting the text (even in exchange for some of the photos). There are hardly diagrams at all.

The text is well-written and easy to understand.

3-0 out of 5 stars A nice start for novices
The book is very handy and actually has nice photographs, but it is targeted to a novice or a "fresh start" rugby enthusiast. Keeping this point in mind, it is a remarkable work, both in style and guise, because skills, tactics and rules are clearly explained.

The text is simple but quite serious, hence being rugby an "informal" sport, a better explanation should be devised for some particular events during the match. The lineout is a typical example: in fact the rule, which permit an aided 6-foot plus gentleman to hover in the air waiting for the oval, must have been thought up by a three-quarter who flew Harriers (the famous vertical landing fighter airplane!). This strange engagement is characterized by a devastatingly human exertion, that is the pathological damage this may cause the unsuspecting jumper's groin when his shorts is pulled sharply upwards by two herculean "thrusters"! So far for the tactics!!

Another amusing rule too seriously explained is when the front rows collapse during a set scrum. The refree (the usual scapegoat for italian fans!!!) gives a penalty against the prop that goes down first. He may be the less potent of the two, the more tired or simply could quite easily have slipped, but no!, the sanction is quick, steadfast and irrevocable: he did on purpose, shame on him! Since the international refrees are not robust specimen of human race, with large diameter trunks and necks, they wrongfully suppose that above huge necks there is little capacity for gray matter. So the modern prop will use this misconception to his advantage when there is a scrum nearby the Opposition try line. Thus, by all means, usually illegal, he will check the opposite prop's thrust while collapsing, therefore automatically gaining a penalty kick from the best position ever. That's what we call a teamwork!!

That said, I will recommend this volume to anyone interested in this wonderful game, but getting in touch with its rules for the first time. ... Read more

This is a great book. It's has tons of valuable information. Not for the guy who loves pictures.Your coaches and captains should have this book.It will make you a better coach, and improve the quality of your club's play.If you want to keep losing, but have the best parties, get some other book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book out there
Great, great book. Both for the new rugby player and the old hand.Only criticism I have is that more illustrations and diagrams would be helpful for the total newbie. However, since that wasn't the intended audience it only becomes a problem because there's nothing else comparable out there.Like the Bible, everytime you read it, you learn something new every time.Or something that you weren't ready to understand before becomes suddenly clear.A must-have for the rugby obsessed.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE Rugby primer
"Total Rugby" is essential reading for players and coaches - and useful for fans. The book covers the essentials of play, from novice to advanced. "Total Rugby" plus a rulebook will take you a long way in the sport. It's not just for 'students of the game'! Leave behind the 'it's just smear the queer' and 'if I hit 'em hard enough we'll win' attitudes and learn something about your sport. You'll never win against skilled teams until you ingrain the information encompassed by "Total Rugby". If you're ready for advance tactics and strategy, check out "Think Rugby" by the same author.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book
I've been playing rugby for almost 6 years, and I wish I read this book earlier. While I think this book is a lot more useful for coaches than for players, it is still a great reference- for example, diagrams outlining the best way to drive in a scrum, explanations of drift defense- all important stuff, and he also goes into detail about what each position should do- which is great for beginners, who are often out there not understanding their roles. Being a passionate rugger, I finished this book in one day!

4-0 out of 5 stars A great reference book for all ruggers
Mr. Greenwood has all the basics in here, and it serves as a useful reference beginners wanting to get the basics of the game down, to more experienced ruggers who want to read up on strategy and training tactics. ... Read more

Nearly 300 remarkable black-and-white photographs present the early days of the sport as most have never seen it. 5-0 out of 5 stars Black and white glory
Classic rugby in black and white, large format filmglory!

This is a great photo book. It's interesting to see how the game used to look: twentysomething men in tweed suits, often smoking pipes, with hair styles that suggest one's grandfather. They hold huge rugby balls, wear huge shorts and long socks. They don't appear anywhere as fit and muscular as today's pros, but they were stroppy, tough and admirable men... rugby just doesn't look like this anymore.

You also get images of some of the greats: Napier, Wakefield, Prince Obolensky, etc. I once wrote an article about some of the old school ruggers depicted in this excellent coffee table book - [...] - read it and you'll get a taste for the content in this book.

Tennant mentions that in the photographic era before modern digital photography the game was depicted differently than today; you can certainly see this in the photos in this book, and it's fascinating.

Qualified recommendation: my wife only paid $[...] for it, not the $[...] plus I see right now. Not sure it's worth more than $[...]...

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic rugby pics
What a better gift to offer in Rugby World Cup Year? Great pics that take you back to the days of the glorious amateur sport of rugby football. The communal baths were all the players would bathe after the game, the muddy pitches with any signs of grass, etc. etc. This is the sole high level sport that resisted the calls of professionalism into the last decade of the 20th century. Enjoy the Rugby World Cup, the world's third biggest sporting event!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book
If you love rugby you will love this book.It is a coffee table tome full of fantastic photos from the 1800s to the 1980's.These are not mainly photos of match action, but cover the ethos and spirit of the sport with sensitivity, artistic value, and imagination. For its size and content, this book is a great value.A must!

Book Description
This remarkable collection of candid nude photos of France’s national rugby team goes beneath the uniform to reveal what real jocks look like underneath it all. Each image taken by leading French photographer François Rousseau depicts the rugby player―alone or with teammates―undressing, lounging on the bench, showering.Locker Room Men is at once a celebration of athletes and the beauty of the male form as well as the fulfillment of the fantasy of going behind the scenes in a winning team’s locker room.
Sure to appeal to both gay men and straight women, these photos are unusual because the men are not models. They don’t work out just to look good―and look good they do―their bodies are sculpted by winning victories on the field. They aren’t made up, shaved, or prettified in any way. These are some of the world’s best rugby players―brawny, tough, competitive.
Since 1999, the French national rugby team has posed nude or semi-nude for an annual calendar. The purpose behind the calendar was to get wider “exposure” for rugby and the team. In 2004, François Rousseau was selected as photographer, and he successfully brought out the sensual beauty and sexiness inherent in the rugby players’ rough and tumble exterior. The calendar became a cult hit, and thus the book was born so that even more of these unparalleled images could be savored.
Whether or not rugby will become more popular in this country remains to be seen, but this book will certainly raise the game’s profile… ... Read more

There really isn't much to say but GO RUGBY!!! This book has some of the most gorgeous bodies in it!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sizzling photography
The pictures are terrific and capture the beauty of men in their element.I enjoy introducing the book to girlfriends of mine who appreciate men.I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow.
I gave this to my partner for Christmas and of all of the presents that I gave him, many much much more expensive, this was his favorite. It is truly a hot hot book. It's a must by if you are into "sporn".

5-0 out of 5 stars Unforgettable beauty
This collection of pictures taken by Fancois Rousseau of athletic men is a wonderful presentation of his eye for beauty. The photos presented herein are the culmination of his captivating photo shoots documented in the making of the 2004 Dieux du Stade calendar DVD. Many shots from that film are handsomely displayed within the grand pages of this quality pressed book. The men are richly captured within black and white photography that gives them artistic beauty, with shadows that reflect off them offering some intriguing mystery. From the dreamy close-up facial pictures, to the wondrous nude forms, to even the shots of the bare locker room with muddy footprints and a barren field of play, Fancois Rousseau gives us a look through his keen eyes to what all the athletes have to offer, especially a love for their form. These athletic men are gorgeously photographed and are meant to be admired for their overall form; their faces and bodies are meant to steal your eyes, and not be given the same kind of treatment as an erotically charged photoshoot. Oh, there are scenes of eroticism, but it's a testament to Fancois Rousseau's talent that he can always pull it off with taste. There are very few instances ofphotography to match the class given to these men of sport. If you keep this in mind, and admire the photography for its beauty and not for its lack of frontal shots, you will come to see the men, and the book, as a great assemblage of male beauty. I simply cannot recommend this book enough, especially if you enjoyed the 2004-2005 making of the Dieux du Stade calendar DVDs, as there is no reason you should put off getting this as an accompaniment to those two great features.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Avid Eye of a Gifted Photographer....
As well as a vivid pictorial of antomical perfection of the French National Rugby League, this stunning expose lends the gifted eye of this photograher's protrayal of natural lockeroom brawn, and has captured as noted, raw and natual splendor in the male physique. And of course a dream book, of sorts, for a many fan's of the sport and male physique in perfection. In itself, this worthy publicaton proves that the athletic male form, in it's unwavering splendor, can make a marvelous subject matter for a serious collector as well as your coffee table collection, as it throws eye candy to the needy masses of skin in it's ultimate form. Possible' to pull out at your latest soire as it is a Splendidly Bound and Jacketed Publication worthy of a Collector's Shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rugby as chess
With 38 years of rugby experience & a fairly extensive print reference collection, I rate this insightful work from Jim Greenwood as tops. Anyone who can view the strategic considerations in a rugby match as similar to the thought processes needed in a chess match will find delight here, Greenwood's earlier work Total Rugby is likewise, though more in a technical skills manner. Think Rugby brings the mental aspects of the game to the forefront. Physical prowess is valuable, but experience & conscious decision making can make all the difference. Opportunities are limited in any match and knowing how to capture the most & waste the least is what you want for your side. This book can take you there!

5-0 out of 5 stars THINK Rugby
I'm only part way through this book, but so far it's been great.I have a hard time slowing the game down in my head during play and analyzing what's going on.This book has helped me to relax a bit, take my time, and think about what the other team is doing and what I should be doing to beat them.Overall, great book. Can't wait to finish it now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awsome Resource
Thing Rugby is am amazing book for any coach, player or even fan of rugby. It will help you develop as a player or coach. This is a resource no team should be without. One of it's primary focus's is to help you learn to think and play as a team, from the coach down to the reserves. Definitely a must read for any Rugby Enthusiast.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very deep- expands your mental strength of the game.
Mr. Greenwood went into great detail about the Tactical Decision Making that goes on during a match. Not only does this book expand a players thinking capability on the pitch, but many of the methods of thinking canbe used off the pitch. Do not buy to help out your physical game, but yourmental game. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not enough Drills
Its a very basic book. Not so much focused on drills but more so on stretching and the difference between the guys game and the girls game. It was more of an autobiography of the author than a coaching tutorial.I would have liked something that had more drills and game tactics

5-0 out of 5 stars A little gem.
What a little gem of a book! The writing is clear and clever, and a perfect synopsis of women's rugby. For anyone interested in women's sports or who is interested in coaching rugby, this is a must read. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Rugby Laws- plain and simple
I really enjoyed this book.Although only current through 1995, many of the laws are still applicable. What the book does best, is explain WHY the law exists and explain them in the context of the game in very simpleterms.Diagrams illustrate certain points very well.Understanding whythe law is there makes it so much easier to enforce and play(yes, I'm areferee).Experienced players, new players and definitely referees shouldbe able to learn a great deal from this book.4 stars of 5, only becauseit's current through 1995. ... Product Description
When the sample arrived from Australia, we couldnt believe our eyes and began calling everyone we knew! ANOTHER exquisitely photographed and produced calendar of rugby players in the buff! We're also the US importer/distributor of the "Dieux du Stade 2008 Calendar" and were delighted to discover a similar-but-unique, collectible-quality calendar this season. These are "calendars" in name only; the days of the month are narrow horizontal strips at the top of page -- not to distract from the stunning photographs of the gorgeous, humpy footballers. AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALLERS NAKED FOR A CAUSE is the creation of Sydney-based photographer, Pedro Virgil and the 28 NRL and AFL players who got naked (or close to it) for this project, a fundraiser for a breast health charity. Virgil, a commercial and fine art photographer, is a master of the conceptual -- every image is a scene, a tableau, perfectly framed, beautifully lit, crackling with energy and sexual possibility. Many of the athletes (average age 22) are glistening with sweat, smudged with dirt, or sport mad/gorgeous ink. Our favorite is 22 year-old Heath L'Estrange, captured, as if by surprise, in a steamy white-tiled shower room. Steamy indeed! The footie players naughty bits are hidden by his pose, from the side, accentuating his massive thighs and tight butt. 19-month calendar, 30 pages, full-color, oversize (18" x 14" and 1/4" thick). Printed on heavy glossy stock with wire binding. Made in Australia. This calendar is the first project of NAKED FOR A CAUSE, an ongoing enterprise that will produce "products and campaigns to raise money for great causes." Very limited supply. Next business day shipping guaranteed. US addresses only ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!!!
I recently bought a copy of the calendar and OMG, the guys are HOT and the images were simply stunning! What a great job done by the photographer, Pedro Virgil! Compared to other calendars I have seen or bought, this one really is a top of the range, premium quality product. The high gloss images seem to make the guys leap of my wall! (I wish!). I love the way the photographer has captured these real sportsmen in a way which is so sexy without looking contrived. Far sexier and more real than the French rugby calendar which I also bought. I hadn't heard of the photographer before but I'll be watching out for more of his work now if it's like this. The Naked for a Cause calendar just oozes sexy, sultry, straight-guy masculinity. An awesome buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Australian Footballers Naked for a Cause!
Like the "Dieux du Stade" series of calendars, AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALLERS NAKED FOR A CAUSE 2008 Calendar is an oversize, brilliantly photographed, high-quality collection of poster-sized pictures of nude and semi-nude athletes. Is it something in the water?Without exception, each man (average age 22) is stunning!Australian Photographer PEDRO VIRGIL's choice for the cover, 21 year-old WILLIAM ZILLMAN, reminds us of Matt Damon.Jordan Bannister, player for the Carleton Blues, is a young Bruce Springsteen.Chris Knights, stares at us in a way that recalls Keanu circa "River's Edge".Six packs, square jaws, ample butts (all that running and kicking) abound in the provocative, ethnically-diverse collection. The calendar DRIPS WITH TESTOSTERONE!Women (and men) who appreciate the male nude, especially when they're masculine movie-star material, will love AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALLERS NAKED FOR A CAUSE.The calendar benefits the McGrath Foundation, an Australian breast health charity. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars dispels many myths
The deep set alignment so commom in U.S. rugby is the primary reason our offensive attacks fail!

Fast aggressive defenses drift along and contain and stop movements without being challenged!

This book is a must read forany rugby coach. I've implemented the tactics described within andcompletely refocused the team on applying pressure on the defense ratherthan vice versa.

The secret is the flat line offense which encouragesstraight ahead running, easier decision making, preserves space, and makesit much easier for forwards to maintain support.

One of the biggestchallenges faced by U.S. rugby is decision making! The deep alignment makesthis more difficult by giving the illusion of both time and space. The netresult is generally a stoppage ofmovement 5-10 meters behind the gainline and 30 or more meters away from forward support. Backs must engagequickly and close to support.

We Americans love the big play and allhands to the winger is an axiom, with "get it out" as thefamiliar battle cry. Unfortunately, what appeared like exploitable spacedisappears quickly in a sea of defenders, lost territory, and tenuouspossesion!

This books helps! Expect resistance if your backs have"always" aligned deep! The American rugby mind does not acceptchange well and this more than anything contributes to our currentcondition!
