The writers are counting on the fact that they stuck "New Zealand" in the title to sell this book. There is practically nothing of substance or merit. If you feel the need to learn some regional phrases such as "players should not "spit the dummy"", then it would be worth a buck or two.Otherwise, don't bother.nothing technical or advanced. Product Description
It's in the early morning, usually on dry, icy cold, thorn-strewn fields, that rugby legends are created. The boys are kaalvoet, the linesmen are spectators, sometimes unwillingly plucked from the makeshift stands, and the aroma of boerewors on hot coals drifts across the field. It is here that the love for the game of rugby is born, where passion is first ignited. "Between the Lines" is a journey to the heart of South Africa's rugby spirit. Join Matthew Knight as he travels from Bishops in Cape Town - the birthplace of rugby in South Africa - to the hallowed corridors of Hilton College and Michaelhouse in KwaZulu-Natal, to Adelaide Gymnasium in the Eastern Cape, where the legendary Os du Randt played for the First XV, and Grey College in Bloemfontein, the undisputed nursery for future Springboks. Knight meticulously mines South Africa's rich rugby heritage and interviews some of the former and current greats of the game.Schalk Burger Snr and son, Skonk Nicholson (South Africa's longest-serving coach), Mark Andrews and Nick Mallett, among many others, share their memories of the game that has left an indelible impression on their lives, as well as the lives of those who cheered them on from the stands. This is Matthew Knight's quest to discover the foundation of Springbok success: schools' rugby. ... Read more

Product Description

Beginning with England's triumphant World Cup win in November 2003 and culminating with the Lions Tour of New Zealand, Todd R. Nicholls examines rugby at each level in the major countries in which it is played. The author covers the origins, aims, and achievements of both the Super 12 and the Tri-Nations; assesses the background of the Zurich Premiership and how this competition fits into the world rugby calendar; interviews members of the 2005 Six Nations squads to ask their opinions on rugby's current burning issues; reviews the state of the game in post-Apartheid South Africa; and concludes by examining whether or not rugby is in a healthier position now than it was when it was an amateur sport. Meticulously researched and breathtaking in scope, The Winter Game takes the reader on an exhilarating journey around the world of rugby over the past 18 months, and predicts what direction the game will take from here on in.

Product Description
The Rugby colony opened amid great fanfare in 1880 on East Tennessee's sparsely settled and rugged Cumberland Plateau. Famous British author and social reformer Thomas Hughes was the most involved and dedicated of Rugby's Anglo-American founders. He intended Rugby to be a class-free, agrarian community based on cooperative enterprise, culture, and religious freedom. During its first decade, hundreds immigrated to Rugby from the British Isles; hundreds more came from other parts of America. Some stayed briefly, some for years, some for life. More than 60 cottages, villas, and commercial and institutional buildings of distinctive Victorian styles were built during Rugby's early years. Though Rugby was briefly the most thriving community on the northern plateau, many factors prevented realization of Hughes's utopian goals. Rugby today is a rare surviving example of 19th-century utopian community building. The historic town plan, surrounding woodland and rivers, and key original buildings survive, unspoiled by modern development, through committed restoration and preservation. Heritage tourism is bringing new life. ... Read more

Product Description

Alun Carter experienced the highs and lows of working with the Wales national rugby squad throughout his 12 years as the team’s head analyst. During this time, he saw a number of high-profile coaches come and go, and here he delivers a brutally honest account of what it was like to work with each of them. From the inspirational successes of the Graham Henry and Mike Ruddock eras to the disappointments and failures of the Steve Hansen and Gareth Jenkins regimes, the reader is given an insider’s version of what really went on. Carter does not shy away from controversy, and he pulls no punches in his assessment of the infamous rift between Graham Henry and Sir Clive Woodward that threatened to destroy the current head coach of the All Blacks, the underhand machinations that led to Mike Ruddock losing his job, and the negative impact of the Welsh Rugby Union principals on the running of the national squad. The former analyst also provides an informed appraisal of the remarkable 2005 and 2008 Grand Slam victories. This warts-and-all account of more than a decade of Welsh rugby is packed with revelations, exclusive contributions, and untold stories that will intrigue and delight all fans of the sport.

Editorial Review

Product Description
In 1995 rugby union became the last significant international sport to sanction professionalism. To some this represented an undesirable challenge to the traditions of the game. To others the change was inevitable and overduean acknowledgment of both the realty of modern sport and the extent to which money had already permeated the game. While there are some commonalities in the response to professional rugby, the contributions to this book, representing almost all of the significant rugby playing countries, reveal much more that was shaped by particular local contexts both within rugby and in terms of its place within the economic, political, class and social structures of the surrounding society. The authors assess the contrasting ways in which rugby administrators at local, regional and national level grappled with the changes that were required and the demands of the corporate backers who funded the transition to professionalism. But the more contentious relationships considered are those involving the many amateur rugby players and committed fans who found that significant community and historical reference points were subtly altered or simply obliterated in the face of new commercial imperativesand especially new competitions that separated elite players from the grassroots of the game. Some have adapted to the replacement product with relish, others have not. Some have genuine and well articulated grievances against the processes of changes. Others have fallen victim to a nostalgia which appropriates very selective memories of the amateur past to highlight apparent problems with the professional present. Above all, these contributions provide a range of perspectives that enable the reader to take stock at a particular point in what is still a rapidly evolving game. Read in ten or twenty years, this book may confirm that many of the right paths have been takenor it may provide pointers to crisis as yet unimagined. ... Read more

72. The Kiwis: 100 Years of International Rugby League
by John (John Oliver) Coffey
Hardcover: 440 Pages (2007-04-01)

Isbn: 1869710908

Editorial Review

Product Description
In 1907 a New Zealand team launched international rugby league by touring Australia, Britain, and Australia (again) against a backdrop of life bans from an outraged rugby union and the tragic death of its young organiser. Since then the Kiwis have played more than 100 test matches each against traditional rivals Australia and Great Britain, have had a 50-year rivalry with France, and competed in World Cup tournaments since 1954. There have been disastrous tours, such as that in 1926-27 when seven forwards went on strike in England and were banned for life, and triumphant ones, such as when the 1971 Grand Slam Kiwis beat Australia, Britain, and France all in one year. Similarly, there have been many momentous matches at home against the Kangaroos, Lions, and French touring teams. Most of the stories have never been told before. For example, the 1912 New Zealand team refused to come home from Australia until it was given time for an end-of-tour party! For 90 of those years the Kiwis were amateurs battling against overseas professionals. The book being prepared to coincide with the centenary in 2007 will include an introduction, 10 sections covering each of the 10 decades, extensive statistics, and many illustrations. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best sports book I've ever read
You couldn't ask for more from a book. Was easy to read and was a tremendous insight to an old established game turning professional. Was a facinating insight into how the old guard had to surrender to the money of Rupert Murdock. There is detailed accounts of players meeting and the power struggle that followed. A truly facinating book and would be of interest to any sports fan wanting to no more about what goes on behind closed doors. A five star rating without a doubt. ... Read more

Product Description
John Daniell is a rubgy mercenary. A brutal word for an often brutal game. In 1996, when Rugby Union turned professional, John emigrated to France where he played for a decade in top competitions. His team ricocheted between fear and ecstasy, as they battled to save the club from relegation and their careers from the scrap heap. Now he lifts the lid on the dark world of the journeyman player, where losing a home game is considered a crime, coaches and club owners will do anything to win, and agents ruthlessly manipulate players. His compelling confessions are both shocking and funny, taking you behind the scenes, onto the field and into the very heart of the scrum. ... Read more

Product Description
Thwarted in his ambitions to play football for Arsenal, or become the new Bob Dylan, Stuart Barnes took up rugby. His path led him to desert first Wales, then Bristol and eventually England, whilst he found solace in Bath. He maintained a high profile as one of rugby's few anti-establishment characters. He was critical of the Conservative Party, Twickenham's amateur ethos and "Swing Low Sweet Chariot", and retained a loyal following of rugby supporters. This autobiography chronicles his behind the scenes in the England camp and his frequent hangovers and depressions induced by too much Joseph Conrad and Thomas Hardy. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Wordy, overly complex prose wrecks a good story.
Stuart Barnes tries too hard to use every word in the English language inhis book on a life in rugby.

After reading the first third I had to takethe book back to the library. It was a bit like wading through treacleafter a while, what's the point? who's he trying to impress? i sure hope hedoesn't speak the way he writes.

On the flip side Barnes' views of rugby,in particular English rugby are refreshing and informative.

Inconclusion; if you like your prose plain and to the point you will findthis book hard going. If you are a big Stuart Barnes or Bath RFC fan thenthis is probably the best way for an outsider to get an inside view. ... Read more
