Product Description
How would the legendary figures in the Bible advise us today? We're running the race of our lives and it's a long one. We need encouragement along the way-a cheering grandstand or a personal trainer or two. John Maxwell reminds us that even in a modern world, the greatest inspiration is still found within the pages of the Old Testament. In RUNNING WITH THE GIANTS, Maxwell brings those great personalities to life. David would remind us how to overcome adversity.Noah would tell us not to fear doing the impossible. And Rebekah would urge us to give and serve generously. Each of these and the many other biblical figures Maxwell examines can motivate believers toward their personal best in the marathon of life.Amazon.com Review
Himself an inspiration to millions through his motivational speeches and bestselling books, John C. Maxwell reaches out to the leading icons of the Old Testament for the life and leadership lessons conveyed in his thought-provoking albeit slim Running with the Giants. Maxwell, author of The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership and a half-dozen other books on the topic, writes here that biblical personalities like Abraham, Joseph, and Moses can provide us with the real "inspiration, wisdom, and empowerment" we need to lead. For example, Maxwell explains, Noah's actions teach us that "one person can make a difference"; he then fleshes out relevant maxims like "Don't be afraid to stand out in a crowd" and "Don't be afraid to do something for the first time" to bring this concept into the 21st century. Likewise, the servant girl from the book of Kings shows us how "one small act can make a big difference," but for it to happen today one must be confident and credible and "speak to people's needs." Those committed to the sources from which Maxwell draws will particularly appreciate his take on the lessons they impart, as well as his athletically inspired theme and contemporary presentation. --Howard Rothman ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Shallow and short
Not very valuable. Each chapter is very short and very shallow. Not much to this book at all. I would not recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sound bites from the Old Testment
Wonderful easy to understand and to remember key ideas from Old Testament characters that apply in the 21st century.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what expected from John - SMPsolutions.com
I am a big fan of John C Maxwell so I was disappointed with this book. My expectations was of powerful leadership lessons and a relation to the bible. The was mainly like reading the bible which I already have one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Running with the Giants: What the Old Testament Heroes Want You to Know About Life and Leadership
This book was used as a team building tool for our group during our annual training. Each lady was given the book "Running with the Giants: What the Old Testament Heroes Want You to Know About Life and Leadership" by John C. Maxwell, two characters were randomly assigned to each board member and then they were asked to do a small presentation about the characters.I highly recommend this training to Christian centered organizations as it not only teached the board members certain lessons from the Old Testament Giants but it also helped the board to bond as they shared experiences from their own lives. This is the type of training that groups need to be able to team build as an organization.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tidbits of Giants
I like that I was able to read this book fairly quickly, though it does have a bunch of powerful things that spoke to me.

The giants in the Bible John C Maxwell talks about are:
Noah
Esther
Joseph (he's my favorite)
Moses
Rebekah
Abraham
Nehemiah
The Servant Girl
David
Jonathan

There are more giants than this in the Bible, but I like how they each contributed something different to God's kingdom.

At the end of each section there is a time for reflecting upon your own life with regards to the passage read and to the Bible giant's life.

The book is written in such a way that it's like it's talking to YOU.Very personal.

Product Description
In 1869, John Wesley Powell led a small party down the Green and Colorado Rivers in a bold attempt to explore the Grand Canyon for the first time. After their monumental expedition, they told of raging rapids, constant danger, and breathtaking natural beauty of the American landscape at its most pristine.

Jon Waterman combines sheer adventure and environmental calamity in this trailblazing cautionary account of his 2008 trip down the overtaxed, drying Colorado. Dammed and tunneled, forced into countless canals, trapped in reservoirs and harnessed for electricity, what once was untamed and free is now humbled, parched, and so yoked to human purposes that in most years it trickles away 100 miles from its oceanic destination.

Waterman writes with informal immediacy in this eye-witness account of the many demands on the Colorado, from irrigating 3.5 million acres of farmland to watering the lawns of Los Angeles. He shows how our profligacy and inexorable climate change spark political conflict, and how we can avert this onrushing ecological crisis. As he follows Powell afloat and afoot, Waterman reaches out both to adventure travelers and to scientists, conservationists, environmentalists, and anyone interested in the fragile interplay between nature and humans. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great read for those interested in water management in the west
This is one of the best recently written books to help folks understand water management issues in the Colorado River Basin. I read it immediately prior to reading "Dead Pool", an outstanding follow-on to "Running Dry" for those folks who really want to understand the history and current issues of water management in the arid American Southest.

1-0 out of 5 stars Another parents perspective
It appears you put your child at risk taking him through Westwater canyon and blaming a guide who only offered to protect him.Why would a parent not have their child respect authority "spraying water when asked not to" and then blame authority when authority is following up on another harmless water activity.I stopped reading after this.Your derogatory description of a guide who works for little money and tips, who also protects natural resources is beneath a National Geographic Writer.Shame you on!

5-0 out of 5 stars An eloquent and impassioned call to action.
Jonathan Waterman's new book, "Running Dry", published by the National Geographic Society, is an incredibly timely and important work.I have been down the Grand Canyon twice and feel that I am relatively well informed on environmental issues, but this work has really shocked and challenged me to think about what we are doing in America to our rivers, waterways, and lakes. We take for granted that our conservation corp and federal resource management groups know what they are doing and are committed to the long term preservation of our wilderness. It is clear however that this is not always the case. There are many powerful, vested interests involved that make the politics of water rights & water quality an issue in which all of us need to participate.

In my own community, the University of Minnesota recently tried to censor a film "Troubled Waters: A Mississippi River Story", presumably under pressure from the agricultural industry worried about public relations.Truth has many faces, and we need to be vigilant and involved if we are not be misled and hornswoggled in the issue of environmental water conservation.

Jon has been an environmental steward his entire life.He has now written 10 books; virtually all engage the reader to value and protect our wilderness areas. His early service as a Denali park ranger led to his writing "Surviving Denali".His more recent books reach from the Sea of Cortez ("Kayaking the Vermillion Sea") to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and Northwest Passage ("Where Mountains are Nameless").The National Geographic has a pretty good track record of supporting the best and the brightest scientists and journalists to present valuable information to their readership. Jon's research expedition for this book traverses the entire length of the Colorado River from its origins in the Rockies to the sea. "Running Dry" offers a valuable picture of an amazing and vital waterway in crisis. It is an impassioned and eloquent call to action that hopefully we will heed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A remarkable journey
Excellent source of information on the current state of the beleaguered Colorado River watershed. A well written and interesting read. A must-have book for anyone concerned about the vast changes sweeping this arid region of the American Southwest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes my Top Ten list of books I've read in the last decade
I've read the first 18% of this book on my Kindle and I can't say enough positive things about the book.I expected the book to be a simple recounting of a paddle down the Colorado River and instead I'm getting a fascinating history lesson on Western states water law and an abreviated bio on the author's paddle mates and interviewees.Having spent a relished year in Breckenridge as a fifth grader in 1979, I have a romanticized view of Colorado that is being brought fast forward to the modern and unsustainable Colorado of 2009.Having spent a week touring from Denver to Lake Powell last summer, I have seen in person the bathtub ring of lowered water levels. This book is helping me understand that they might be permanent.

I'll give an update when I finish the book.

Oh, and I do wish there were pictures.I don't know if there are pictures somewhere in the book because I can't fan the pages of a Kindle book looking for them, but there ought to be a picture on every page.I have seen none yet.I am using Microsoft Streets and Trips and Google Earth on my laptop to see where the author is at any point in the book.Street View is very helpful to get an idea of the topography.

I think this book would be great for parents to share with their kids while using mapping software and following along on the authors travels.

UPDATE:I've now finished reading the book.I still highly recommend the book.I found a few pictures at the absolute end of my Kindle edition.I highly prefer photos be embedded at the relevant portion of the book. Also, a few places seem to be truncated w/o the end of sentences.Don't know why that happened.I recall only one spelling error where a "there" should have been a "their."

My only complaint with the book is substantive in that the further you get into the book the more obviously one-sided it reads without any effort applied to seeing the other side of the story. It is impossible for me to clarify this statement without spoiling the story for potential readers so I will just say that the author seems to find no value in motorized pleasure boating and misses the point completely that most of the problems with the Colorado running dry are caused by exponential population growth rather than some arbitrarily inappropriate use of water for recreation like building dams.

Simply stunning work product otherwise.Thank you for a great education about the river and water rights.See authors web site for a detailed map not included in Kindle edition and to my recollection not mentioned either until end of book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fill 'er up
It's amazing just how consciously stupid our politicians can be -- especially with a book like this available for them to read.Of course, I'm assuming that they take the time to read.

3-0 out of 5 stars A few good ideas, but a lot of stale thinking
Peter G. Peterson, former member of Nixon's cabinet, ex-head of Lehman Brothers, and billionaire co-founder of Blackstone Group, provides a stern warning that the United States will end up bankrupt if it doesn't enact major reforms in entitlement spending. One suggestion is to benchmark Social Security spending with the consumer price index and not wage inflation, which tends to outpace prices. Other than that, his ideas are so politically unpalatable as to be worthless. He comes off as one of these stodgy Northeast Republicans who want the government to do everything free-spending liberal Democrats want it to do, but for 15 to 20 percent less. He describes the Reagan Revolution as a failure because it lowered taxes and increased federal deficitis, as if the country's economic pie is completely static and the Cold War never existed. He seems to think the federal government is entitled to raise taxes without any regard for greater gains in efficiency and effectiveness. He gives the impression that he was irked that no one in the Bush Administration offered him a job. Guess he'll just have to settle for writing thinkpieces and being a blowhard.

5-0 out of 5 stars Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid, Then ACT!
Ten Tremendous chapters:

Chapter 1. Bankrupt Parties, Bankrupt Nation. "Steered by bankrupt parties, in short, we will soon become a bankrupt nation. That is what this book is about" (p. 5). Gives a broad brush overview of the rest of the book and interesting statement of how the Republicans veered away from Thomas Jefferson's intent to include President Bush's fiscally irresponsible Medicare Prescription Drug Act.

Chapter 2. Why Deficits Matter to you and your Future. "Keeping crooked books ... is a felony offense. Thus, if Congress had to abide by its own rules, it would have to throw itself in jail for fraudulent accounting" (p. 30).The chapter explains how deficit spending drains national savings; the debt; and the massive problem with unfunded social security, Medicare and Medicaid.

Chapter 3. The Challenge at Home: The Aging of America."Just to pay for (Medicare and Social Security) we would have to tax away 56.7% of worker's taxable payroll" (p. 67).Discusses the rapid aging of the baby boom and impact upon Government payouts; disputes the "Grow the economy fantasy" and the "Cut Health Care Waste Fantasy."

Chapter 4. The Challenge Abroad: A Dangerous World.Discusses Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) and the War on Terror (WOT) plus the areas of new spending: First Responders, Health Care System, Cargo Containers, Immigration Control, and Critical Infrastructure. Points out that "security" needs to be balanced against cost.

Chapter 5. How the Democrats Got Us into This Mess (with Republican Help).Starting with the New Deal, the "it was mainly the Democrats who set the fiscal agenda and took us down the road to unsustainable promises. Their strategy: persuade voters there is no limit to how much they can take from government" (p. 108).Also discussed President Johnson's Great Society and the Contract with America. Concludes that the Kerrey-Danforth Commission, Breaux Commission, and Commission on Social Security Reform warnings have been ignored by Clinton and Bush alike.

Chapter 6. How the Republican Got Us Much Deeper (with Democrats Help).Discusses the tax cuts, and increased spending during the Reagan and Bush years, resulting in massive debt.

Chapter 7. Ten Partisan Myths. Shatters five Democratic Myths about Entitlements and Five Republican Myths about Tax Cuts.

Chapter 8. Why America is Choosing the Wrong Future.Discusses our Founders opposition to deficit spending and debt; and how the politicians of the 1960s placed us on a path of destruction.

Chapter 9. How We Can Rebuild Our Future - And Our Politics. Provides some great suggestions such as indexing new benefits to rise in prices rather than rise in wages; mandated savings; use of index funds; reforming Medicare; reforming the budget process; and reforming political parties.

Chapter 10. A Letter to The Rising Generation. Provides advice to Gen X and beyond.

This is one of the best books written on the fiscal mess in Washington DC. Written in 2004, the same messages of fiscal irresponsibility are true today and totally dispel the absurd notion that continued deficit spending will help "save" the economy. If I were King for a day, I would make every elected official read this book!

After reading this book, you may want to research a new organization called the Peter G. Peterson Foundation ([...]) that is dedicated to increasing public awareness of the nature and urgency of fiscal challenges threatening America's future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chicken Little (2004) has proven to be Nostradamus (2009)
Buy this book and share with your friends! This book, which was recommended to me in the Fall of 2008, just as the world financial system began to collapse, is absolutely prescient of the collapse which has now been called the greatest economic crisis since the Great Depression.Peterson's book is extremely well written, and relatively devoid of the economic jargon which has made macroeconomics previously unintellible to most Americans.

Now if only we can get the fractious, petty politicians who still are in power, and responsible for much of this disaster, to similarly step up to the plate and do what they are supposed to do...that is, lead and inspire this country to a new maturity and sense of community and pulling together to get out of this mess.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful Expose that Seeks to Empower
This is a book about the culture of Washington that has developed over the course of the past 20 years which has resulted in an inability for those active in governance to serve the common good. Increased partisanship, a preoccupation with fundraising and an increasingly cozy relationship with special interests lead Democrats to create new social programs at any cost and Republicans to cut taxes at any cost.Instead of increasing taxes or cutting programs to make up the balance, members of both parties increasingly rely on deficit spending to dole out goodies today with very little thought to the consequences tomorrow. As political careers depend on each respective member's capacity to "deliver," there is little incentive for politicians to break step with the status quo.Consequently, rather than doing the hard work of addressing politically difficult problems as they arise today, they are instead passed on to become the problems future leaders will be forced to address tomorrow. The point of the book is that problems cannot be passed on indefinitely and must eventually be addressed. However, the longer leadership puts off addressing them, the worse the problems become. He focuses specifically on Social Security and gets into the nuts and bolts of the economics involved offering some potential solutions that, as a layperson, I am in no position to judge the efficacy of.

For me, the best part of the book is Peterson's account of the current culture in Washington and how it became this way.He recounts times in the not-so-distant past where leadership was less partisan, more moderate, more accountable to a perceived common good and less inclined to squander it.Or, more simply, a time when people in positions of responsibility behaved more responsibly. In order to address the problems at hand he sees a time of considerable sacrifice ahead, most of which will be shouldered by young people.Through his account, he reaches out to this younger generation to present to them the problems that they will likely encounter and how this came to be.In a very touching letter at the book's close, he urges them to become politically aware and engaged that they might have some ability to influence how these problems are addressed as proposed solutions could fundamentally shape a future that they have a great stake in.Aside from the economic nitty-gritty, this book is a pretty easy read and provides a good orientation to young people and the layperson on sources of the current malaise with Washington. For this purpose, I'd recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Go-To Guide For Creatives Everywhere!
I'm so proud of Joy and Meg because this book turned out to be an absolute go-to guide for creatives and one that I know I'll share with those who want to jump into creative fields. If you are looking for guidance as you launch your creative business or if you are a seasoned pro who could still stand to learn a few new tricks, Creative, Inc. is an excellent guide that you'll want to refer to time and time again.

I personally found it helpful -- I recommend it to beginners out there looking to launch but also to those who have been working independently for some time because the world of freelancing can be quite confusing with tons of gray areas no matter how long you've been freelancing. I jumped out of a corporate career in 2005 to pursue a freelance profession and I'm still learning how to navigate the waters as things change so quickly due to the rather unstructured nature of it all.

Out here, there is no rule book, no HR group or legal team to tap into when you need help. All of the decision-making and ultimately the entire business and what you do with it falls on Y-O-U which can be tricky, scary, exciting, motivating, whatever you make of it really. That is also why creatives need some support and guidance from those who get it, who have had to navigate this ever-changing environment through trial and error. Thankfully with a guide like this one, which is filled with excellent suggestions by two ladies who have "been there", the heartache and headache that can come from not knowing how to handle certain things (or handling them incorrectly!) can be significantly reduced or avoided altogether if one follows this handy how-to.

I also must add how much I appreciate the friendly delivery -- all too often books concerning business can read as preachy or blah but this one is professional yet approachable, witty at times, and altogether a good "yawn free" read (which I can't say about most of the business titles out there!). The interviews in the book are excellent as well -- Meg and Joy chat with a diverse crowd of creative freelancers which reinforces their words throughout the book and helps the reader to feel more supported while also seeing the way out.

Great work Joy and Meg!

5-0 out of 5 stars Meg Does it Again!
Easy to understand guide to the freelance world. This book covers everything in a detailed, informative yet simplistic way. From the business end to scheduling time to relax and give attention to your personal needs this book is awesome! I have read other books by Meg and she doesn't disappoint. her experience and research in the field are refreshing compared to other books I have read. If you are starting out or a seasoned veteran...I bet this book would be helpful at any stage of your freelance career!

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and concise, but full of information
Freelancing, whether you are a photographer or illustrator can be an extremely daunting task. How do you find clients? How much should you charge them? How do you balance your schedule so you aren't always working? All this and more are covered in Creative, Inc.The Ultimate Guide to Running a Successful Freelance Business.Meg Mateo Ilasco & Joy Deangdeelert Cho, have written a clear concise guide full of practical information, interspersed with anecdotes of those who have turned their artistic talent into a thriving freelance career. The book begins with the basics of how to decide if freelancing is a good fit, and then goes into detail building your business from the ground up.

Ilasco and Cho are great authorities on this subject because they themselves have turned their own talents into extremely flourishing careers. Ilasco runs a studioby her own name which produces stationery and home products. She has written a few other books and serves as the creative director of Anthology, a new home and lifestyle magazine. Cho not only runs her own successful stationery business, and writes two blogs [...]), but also has a consulting business for new small business owners and freelancers.

Creative Inc book fills the void of information for artists wanting to turn their vision to a full time business. The book is written in a casual and straightforward manner, making it a must read for anyone trying to make the jump to freelance or starting a small business.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative and great for any design profession
I always read the Oh Joy! blog and bought the book almost immediately. Right from the beginning, the content was informative and the real life stories were easy to relate to. Different professionals offer their life stories throughout the book and how they are forever evolving their work and business. There are helpful suggestions for the growing business as a freelancer or as a brand/company. I just started reading so I'm sure there will be much more helpful guides ahead. I already gained more inspiration and knowledge from the small part that I have read. GREAT GUIDE!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Read
Running Loose was an interesting, yet incredibly realistic book. I have to admit I was not planning on choosing this book as an assignment, but I had been referred to it by another student and was told that it was a decent read. I believed her and halfway through this choice I had decided it was worth my time. Although it is not the most exciting book I've ever read I can relate to it and took notice to Chris Crutcher's writing ability.

I really enjoy the way Crutcher portrayed Louie Banks's (the main character) life. He is a young teenage boy who has everything he wants. As a football player in high school, he has athleticism, good friends, and the girl of everyone's dreams. He's got it made.
But things all of the sudden get bad and Louie struggles to keep it all together.

I cannot comment on whether this is one of Crutcher's best works because I have never read anything else that he is written. Based on this book, however, I could imagine he writes other decent pieces that I would be willing to read. I could very well recommend this book to someone else if they needed something to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars two words FREAKIN AWESOME
This book is about a high school kid who has it all a starting spot on his football team, a beutiful girlfriend and good friends, till one day
one of his teammates got into trouble and louie stook up for the other
kid. by doing that he got kicked out the football team, almost a month later his girlfriend dies in a car accident leaving him with nothing except his friends. during her funeral louie can't take anymore of the priest's talking and makes an outburst.
the school plants a tree in her memory.

sorry if this isn't helpful but u need to read it to beleive

1-0 out of 5 stars I didn't really care about this book!
This book was horrible! I hated Running Loose so much. It had no plot at all. It jumped around so much you can't even tell what is going. It is full of bullies, football, and there is one death. I won't tell you who but the book revolves around her. I would defiantly never recommend this book to anybody. If you want to waste your time read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Football Morality
Louis Banks is a football player who doesn't like his coach. His coach is really nasty and seems to take pleasure in verbally abusing his players.Louis is willing to deal with the abuse, though, in order to get to play. Then one day the coach tells him and the rest of the team to do something unsportsmanlike--to physically hurt a member of another team in order to keep him out of the rest of the game and the rest of the seasn, if possible.Louis doesn't like that idea at all, and he ends up off of the football team, choosing to do the moral thing rather than what the coach wanted.

Louis is okay being off of the team. His family is very supportive and so is his girlfriend, Becky. But then tragedy strikes Louis' life and he has to learn to deal with loss and pain and anger, without football as an outlet.

I liked Louis' parents. It was easy to see where a character like Louis wouls get his strength.

Product Description
This book is the story of a personal spiritual journey that happens to be anchored in running. While running is a great way of life, there are deeper issues that affect us all. The metaphor of running creates a great tool to help us understand how to better appreciate our family, and grow in our faith.
"I first started running in the summer of 1978 to win the heart of a girl, but instead, I found God. He chose running to be one of the the places he revealed himself to me. Through my time alone, on my feet, the God of my parents and my grandparents became my God. It was on the road and on the trail that my relationship with God became personal. We developed a friendship which grew bigger than church and became deeper than rules of behavior." (Berry Simpson) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book is very interesting. A non chronological book of the author's runs and what/who he encounters and how God is involved in all his life.

Entertaining and enlightening-good easy read that doesn't have to be done all at once.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book for runners
Berry captures the joy of running, the inspiration of family, and the empowerment of Christ in this book. Running is such a personal journey, but it brings you into a larger community.I love how he anchors his love for running into greater issues of life, like family and faith. While running is a great way of life, there are deeper issues that affect us all.The metaphor of running creates a great tool to help us understand how to better appreciate our family, and grow in our faith.Berry's humorous and insightful chapters captures this thought wonderfully.

5-0 out of 5 stars Running With God is a breathe of fresh air
I would recommend this book to anyone who runs, especially those of us "back of the packers"!
I enjoyed reading about a hobby, or should I say way of life that someone else enjoys as much as I do and then adds the perspective of faith.Berry is a very talented writer that will provoke you to look inside your own heart and to listen to the voice of God that runs with you every mile. It's a good easy read. But, be forewarned that even though the title may be serious, Berry has a knack at getting to your deepest funny bone! I loved this book and am putting it on my Christmas gifting list for sure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Runner or not ... this book is on the top of the pile!
I'm not a runner. Wouldn't pound my joints like that for money or for free. But this series of introspective essays reaches heart and soul and goes much deeper than whether or not you're going to hit the pavement (or the trail). In a few short pages, Berry Simpson made me laugh, and cry, and sigh, and smile. He paints a vivid picture of an "ordinary" human being with an "ordinary" family, who just happens to be following a clear and lifelong and extraordinary path toward God. And God speaks -- to Berry and to all of us -- in the simple, ordinary activity of running from here to there, day in and day out, year in and year out.A journey not to be missed! Read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars RUNNING WITH GOD
If you are a runner and a Christian this is a must read.In this series of inspirational and thought provoking essays, Berry Simpson takes the reader along on his spiritual journey of growth in God and faith in Christ.Simpson catches the essence of the solitude of running with the realization that one never runs alone but always has God at his side. The reader feels the road under his feet, experiencesthe pain of struggling to finish and the exhilaration of crossing the line victorious. All of this is written in a serious but light hearted manner that expresses the author's love of life, love of his family and friends and, most importantly his love for God.

Product Description

A romance novel by an Amish writer, based on true experiences!

It isn't that Lizzie doesn't want to stay Amish. It's just that there is so much to figure out.

Like why can't she let her hair a little looser on top?

And why can't she wear shoes with a little bit more of a heel?

And will she ever really just know for a fact who she is going to marry like her next-older sister, Emma, does?

And how does it happen that her just-younger sister, Mandy, is going on a date before Lizzie ever has a real one?

So does it matter at all if she eats one more whoopie pie? Amos seems to like her a lot when she pounds out the ping-pong games. He even asks her to be his partner in doubles. But then he asks Ruthie if he can take her home!

It has been this way Lizzie's whole life.

She has too hot a temper. She hates housework and dislikes babies. She loves driving fast horses but is petrified of going away from home for a week to work as a maud (maid).

Now that Lizzie is running around, will she scare off the Amish boys with her hi-jinks manners?

She has certainly attracted the attention of the egg-truck driver. A scary thrill runs through her every time the worldly man comes to pick up an order, each time extending his stay a little longer. How long will she keep this a secret from Emma-and from Mamm and Datt?

What will become of Lizzie? Is she too spirited, too innocent, and almost too uninhibited for a young Amish woman?

Told with disarming humor!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amish Fiction | [...]
I'm becoming a fan of Amish books.I always pictured the Amish as being perfect people. The main character in this book is far from perfect. She's a rebel, resisting the normal lifestyle for an Amish girl. She has a lot of growing up to do, should she ever take the initiative.Reading this book, I see that my presumptions are wrong! This book is a fiction book, yet it is based on true experiences of the author!Lizzie's story continues in When Strawberries Bloom, book two of the Lizzie Searches for Love Series.

Also included in the book are eight of Lizzie's recipes.Yum, homemade baked beans and whoopie pie!

Thanks to FSB Media for providing me a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review and for the copy that the winner will be receiving.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Amish girl's coming of age story
This was the first time I've read an Amish book and I wasn't sure what to expect. I was surprised to find that except for scattered cultural references the story follows much the same path as any other book of its genre - that being a coming of age story of an adolescent girl.

Lizzie is fifteen and filled with all the same sorts of feelings any teenager would have, but added to that she's rebellious and willful - something that by definition goes against the Amish belief system. She runs into trouble with family and friends and it's usually of her own (however unintended) making. Some of the situations she gets into are funny and some not so much. But it is usually caused by Lizzie's belief that she is somehow not as loved as her older sister. I found the feeling expressed by this character to be pretty honest and insightful. What I didn't expect was this girl's food issues. Her mother was always making something sweet and rich and while her sisters showed constraint, Lizzie was usually eating too much of it. Food disorders are a serious problem and I don't feel I know enough about them to give an educated opinion about the presentation of this characters problems with food, but I had a gut reaction that her mother did not deal with it in the best possible way. Not sure though. Lizzie's self-image is that she is overweight and not very pretty. I thought it a bit odd that on the cover of the book there is a picture of a very pretty and slim-looking girl with a wide smile. I'm assuming that's Lizzie at a happy and self-confident moment!

Linda Byler has a simple, to-the-point writing style. In each chapter there is a flashback to a related current and in this way the reader is taken through the character's growing pains. I found the Amish lifestyle interesting (so very far removed from my own) and found the glossary at the back of the book useful. I think this would be a good book for any one who enjoys the coming-of-age genre and is tired of those that are the profane, serious mental health issue type books.

3-0 out of 5 stars A little young for my tastes
Running Around was an...interesting glimpse of Amish life. This definitely wasn't your typical Amish story. Lizzie is a stubborn, rebellious girl; her family talks about reading their Bible and having their sins forgiven (not your typical Amish faith) and you don't venture much past Lizzie's families farm. It was less about rules and friendships and more about a young teen trying to find her place in her world. My first thought was that the author hadn't a clue what Amish life was like and was just taking advantage of the Amish fiction boom, but the back of the book states that Linda Byler is actually Amish herself. I'm still not sure what I think of the book; it took such a detour from the normal storyline that I felt a little lost through the whole thing. Will I continue with the series? Probably not. It's a little too immature for my tastes. I have a feeling though that my sisters (who are in their teens) may snatch it from my bookshelf and not give it back!

***I was offered a free copy of the book (from the publisher) in exchange for a review on my blog***

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for teens
I haven't really read alot of books about the Amish, but have truly enjoyed the ones I have read so far! This particular book is written by an Author who is Amish herself! Isn't that awesome!! Running Around (and such) is really a young teen or pre-teen range of book. Lizzie is a bit too whiny & selfish but I know some teens go through this phase in their lives. She is so upset when her FAther sells their family business and takes them to a new home on a farm in a whole new county! She is distraught thinking she & her sister won't find any boys if they move! She struggles with many things and I was glad to see the Amish families written so "real." I look forward to seeing if she matures in the next book for sure!

This is the first book in this Series and I will look forward to reading the 2nd book in the "Lizzie searches for Love" Series!

Thank you FSB Associates for the complimentary issue of Running Around (and Such) in exchange for my honest review.

3-0 out of 5 stars Teen/Young Adult (10-16)
For Lizzie Glick life is not planned or on a path like her sisters, Emma and Mandy are ready to be married, keep house and have children. They are sure about their beliefs and faith in God.Lizzie's is not sure of her beliefs and faith, nor does she understand what God's will means or how praying will help her. When Lizzie's family moves to a new county Lizzie is faced with the process of growing up.In a year she will be sixteen and her "running around" years will begin.Lizzie's hot temper, stubborn will and doubtful nature will make this time in her life a little harder, but more worthwhile to Lizzie in the end.
Running Around is an Amish coming of age novel that was written based on true experiences from the author. The novel is the first book of it's' series and currently there are two more books ready for publication in 2010 and 2011.The novel was one of the best Amish novels I have read in regards to the language use.The author gives a glossary of Amish terms in the back of the novel that I would highly suggest reading before you start. Each term is used constantly throughout the book when it is needed. The reader is not overwhelmed by the language. It is enough to be authentic but not overbearing.Along with the authentic feel of the book due to the language, the reader is enabled to understand the Amish terms without any confusion or frustrations.I have read Amish related novels that switched back and forth between English and Amish terms for the same word, this novel did not do that and I was very glad.Running Around was a quick and easy novel to read and was a wonderful coming of age story.Lizzie is in that awkward stage of life and trying so hard to fit into her family and community. It brought back memories of that time in my life and had me rooting for Lizzie.
I really enjoyed this novel. It was well written and easy to read.I would highly suggest this book to readers ages ten to fifteen. It is definitely a young adult novel. There were a few parts of the book that felt repetitive in nature. The author frequently explained some of Lizzie's doubts and disbeliefs. After a couple of these I was ready to not read it again, because I knew how Lizzie felt seeing nothing had changed the facts. The novel left me interested in what would happen next for Lizzie as not all questions are answered in this book and there is more of the plot to be decided. The books to come will be fun to read as Lizzie's story continues. I would like to read more from Linda Byler, possibly an adult genre.

4-0 out of 5 stars Zen and the Art of Running: The Path to Making Peace with Your Pace
//Zen and the Art of Running// is for new and veteran runners who embrace running as more than a hobby or fitness mechanism. Shapiro focuses on gradual changes in thinking rather than reliance on willpower alone. He encourages the identification of attachments people often apply to their beliefs and desires. For instance, rain and cold are not bad or evil, yet many runners attach the idea that rain and cold are bad and should always be avoided. Attachments should not run your life, pardon the pun. Shapiro applies Zen philosophy to help us see negative emotions we tend to blame on external events. The stress that running can place on relationships is examined with balanced perspectives. This reviewer found the most beneficial teaching to be that of finding the Middle Way, which is avoiding extremes because the mind and body do not perform at their best in extremes. Shapiro applies Zen to the various training regimens runners use to prepare for races. His expertise in running culture is evident. Shapiro does not claim that Zen offers miracles and he approaches injuries and aging from a pragmatic perspective. A little dry at times, but a worthy read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Run Out and Grab a Copy!
The author's discussion of mindfulness is one of the clearest explanations I've ever seen in any yoga or philosophy book I've encountered. I am not actually a runner, but his thoughts on dealing with adverse conditions such as rain apply to any adversity in life (try the new approach that rain is just rain, not good, not bad, just rain). Runners, of course, will find this book most useful, but readers who practice any sport or hobby will benefit greatly from the author's well written, clearcut advice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful and fun to read
If you are contemplating adding running to your life or if you are an experienced runner, this book has a lot to offer to provide motivation and enrich the experience. The insights and suggested activities apply directly to running and carry over to life. This isn't a book about "easy" paths to running or ways to make life less complicated, rather it explains the value of training and discipline from a refreshing Zen perspective.Larry Shapiro's writing style is light, humorous and direct. The examples are practical and easy to follow.Your approach to running will likely change after reading this book. It's a great gift for runners of all levels, and those that meditate or practice yoga and have an interest in running. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars great information, little outdated
Used this as required reading when teaching a class on "small property management". Gives a great overview and a realistic view of running a b&b (have run one for 6 years). Some of info is outdated - can't address current trends since it's a book - but does a great job on the financial side of it.There are lots of b&b books out there and I would definitely recommend this one for anyone thinking about opening up a b&b. Fair warning if you want to run a b&b - really think about the lifestyle aspect that they talk about in the book. It is definitely a lifestyle! It really is a 24x7 job.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
My wife and I recently purchased a B&B in California. Before making the leap, we researched the industry as best as we could, and we bought every book on the subject from Amazon. I can say that this book was extremely informative and helpful. Nice job. Another book that I feel is a must read before anyone goes into this business is Michele Cozzens' I'm Living Your Dream Life: The Story of a Northwoods Resort Owner

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
Before I went into the business, I read this one and "I'm Living Your Dream Life" by Michele Cozzens. Both are very valuable tools.

5-0 out of 5 stars Totally Hits
This book totally hits it down. From the perspective of someone who loves to look at B&Bs but doesn't often follow the latest trends of demographics and whatnot in an industry laden with stealth, mystery, and cloak & dagger tactics I found out that it is much more of a business to unravel and spend time juxtaposing with other work rather than just a casual fling of an investment like what would result if one were, for instance, to open a stock account and buy a specific amount of random (or highly recommended) equities. The author is very well known in his subject matters and thus procreats an authenticity of vernacular style of someone who would run a typical B&B but who would author books and articles on the side kinda like Robin Masters from that excellent television programme Magnum PI - how he would just like let that dude stay in his house all the time and dog out his Ferrari but wouldn't barely even charge him very much because all in all they were the best of friends AND because Higgins, despite all of his worldliness just was not up to par in keeping up with a crafty and backstabbing individual like Thomas Magnum.

3-0 out of 5 stars Complete Idiot's Guide to Running a Bed and Breakfast
Although this book has a lot of good advice, it's not my favorite book I've read on the subject. It seemed rather drawn out and some of the advice was rather vague. It's the fourth book I've read on the subject, since I am planning on opening a B&B soon.I still would recommend reading it, but read others as well. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Running Injury Free
Good book that discusses a number of common runner's ailments and prevention methods.A good read even if you're not suffering from any of the problems within.

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish I had come across this book years ago
Joe Henderson & Joe Ellis do a fine job of covering just about every running injury humanly possible. Strengthening, stretching, proper technique, cautions, encouragement, this book includes it all. As a gravity-challenged strider, I personally consider this a valuable resource, and recommend it to anyone who walks, hikes, or runs.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book for any runner
If you are a runner for nontrivial amount of time, you are very likely to experience some sort of injury already. I did. And I hope I could have bought and read this book before I started running.

The book covers many common forms of injuries experienced by runners, and gives several treatments you can practice in home. Even if you do see a doctor later, the book is an excellent introduction to what happens to your injury so you can coordinate with your doctor in a more helpful way.

The book is written in a very plain and easy to follow way which is a big plus for non-medical background person like me.

I recommend this book to any runner. If you just start running or plan to run, buy and read this book. You won't regret it and could avoid many possible painful results.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite "Injury" book todate!
Not only did this book manage to supply the info I needed in enough detail to be meaningful, particularly with the case studies, it was actually an entertaining page-turner.The author had such a human voice and managed to entirely avoid the tone of smarmy condescension that seems to be rampant in books of this sort.I was particularly won over by his willingness to even poke fun at himself as a case study.I certainly came away with a new respect for thefield of podiatry in sports medicine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
I find that this book has been very helpful in my running and triathlon training. The first few chapters are very good, replete with some basic theory about running and remaining injury free.
The second third of the book is very informative regarding injuries and their treatment.
The last part of the book has great stretching exercises, and good information about how to stay injury free.
My only criticism of the book is based on a comment that my physical therapist had. I've recently had big problems with sprained ankles in both feet and receive physical therapy from a PT specializing in runners. I discussed the book and the chapter on ankles with her and she mentioned that the chapter only describes the author's success and that for every successful treatment outcome, there are lots of not-so-total successes. It would be helpful to understand both.
But overall, a worthy book to buy and read and re-read as the need arises. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Beyond Words
The format of this novel and the cyclical oral tradition/literary mashup that King presents us with is fantastic, interesting, and satirical of canon, as well as Western & Native cultures. The three levels of narration are intriguing and although they may complicate the story at times, they provide a certain amusement and insight that would not otherwise be possible. The characters are believable and lovable and when the novel is finished you will feel as if you have lost a close friend. The part that I most enjoyed, however, was King's humour. Witty and satirical and just out-right funny, it was a great. I highly recommend this book to all adult readers!

You can read my full review of this book here: [...].

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my all time favorite books
I read Green Grass Running Water almost 15 years ago and, though I'm an avid reader, it remains one of my favorite books. I love the mix of real with surreal, dominant culture meets Native culture, play on words, and the characters rock!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing piece of Native literature.
This book is intelligent, satirical, and very thoughtfully written. It weaves the stories of multiple characters from a Blackfoot Indian reserve, but if you look deeper it offers comments on life as a Native American in Canada and the US while playfully comparing native religion to Christianity.Almost every character in the book (even the most minor ones) are named after literary and historical figures, giving the reader plenty to think about.King is a very talented writer, and this book offers a lot to people who are willing to commit to his style of writing.King is a Native American storyteller, so he's not going to give you a "Once upon a time..." straight forward novel with the formula you were taught in grade school (i.e. rising action, climax, falling action, resolution).I'm guessing the bad reviews are coming from people that have never read outside the cannon!I would recommend reading "The Truth About Stories," another King novel, before this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars What is forever - Green Grass, Running Water
Thomas King captures Native Humor as an excellent tool for teaching, for sharing wisdom and as a means to cope when others cannot grasp the meaning of what Natives have to say. The humor of the book and its cyclic rather than linear paterns may be new to Non-Native readers. But, this is the richness and beauty of Native storytelling and liturature at its best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Window on the Indian mind
This is an inventive, magical book for anyone who knows, or wishes to know, American Indian ways of seeing the world.Rather than ponderously attempting to explain the Indian mind, King simply puts it on display:storytelling, puckish humor, memory, quiet persistence and all.Through that Indian lens, the book examines the interactions of men and women, white and Indian attitudes, modern and traditional ways, Hollywood and real history.

It is understandable that those not familiar with Indians might find the book disjointed or hard to follow or less laugh-out-loud hilarious than it is.Much of my enjoyment came from seeing all my Mohican aunts, uncles and cousins -- and the Blackfeet who is married to one of them -- reflected in King's Blackfeet characters.

Nonetheless, for those who know -- or take the time to understand -- Indian ways of thinking, this is a simply wonderful book, a more polished companion to the delightful movie "Smoke Signals" and the Sherman Alexie short stories in "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven" from which that film is drawn. ... Purchased this for my daughter as it is part of a series.
Item arrived on time and in perfect condition.Thank you!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not her best work--not her worst
I just completed the Rarities Unlimited series. I thought this book was better than the first: 'Moving Target' but not as good as the final: Die In Plain Sight'. I think it had to do with the subject matter. I'm not an 'artsy' kind of gal so the setting wasn't that interesting. The suspense plot wasn't super intriguing so I wasn't driven to read through quickly. I like the way Ms. Lowell writes and her dialogue is natural. I will continue to read her books but this was not her best series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good!
I won't review the plot as others already have done so. I'm not sure why this book got such bad reviews because I really liked it. I picked this one up by mistake and was glad I did.Yes, there were a lot of secondary characters but I found them by and large interesting.I liked the fact that the book wasn't all about one hero and one heroine but a variety of others and opens up the possibility of more books in the series.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not so good

As good a primer as Running is, it takes a few momentsto turn the sense of loss attending author Flo-Jo's premature deathinto one of celebration of her accomplishments. Running'striumphant cover and 16-page full-color photographic homage to one oftrack and field's most spectacular presences serve as bridges overthis emotional gap, but, ultimately, it's Flo-Jo's own contagiouspassion and eagerness to share what she knows that kick thiscomprehensive, energetic, and entertaining guide into a truly fittingtribute.

Like a good coach, Flo-Jo works to inspire and nevercondescends; she helps you get started, spurs you on, and then sends youhuffing and puffing on your way. She explains running's physiologicaland emotional benefits in detail (and those of walking, too, if you'reso disposed); introduces you to shoes and equipment; and stresses theimportance of safety and road etiquette, good nutrition, stretching, warming up and cooling down, and, most of all, making sure thatregardless of your health or age to check first with a doctor beforebeginning any serious running program. With the basics in step, sheshoots you into the fast lane with advanced training tips, injurymaintenance and prevention advice, and racing suggestions (how tofind, prepare for, and run them), from local 5Ks on flat courses todemanding international-scale marathons.

In the For Dummiestradition, she ends with a series of top 10 lists. Two of them, takentogether, nicely capture the essence of Flo-Jo as hard-nosedcompetitor and elegant personality: More Than Ten Ways to Sharpen YourMental Edge and Ten Beautiful Races. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good info
I bought the gift for my sister-in-law for xmas. She is becoming a track coach in the spring time, but has never coached before, so i thought it would be funny to get for her.I looked the book over and it does have a lot of good information.Being a runner and a cross country coach I thought it had really good info for a beginner.

5-0 out of 5 stars An informative find
Back when I was in high school, Florence Griffith-Joyner was a huge inspiration for me.Since I was also a sprinter on the track team, that makes sense. After high school, I fell out of the habits I had followed and eventually abandoned them. Now I am older, and wiser, and I would like to get back into the walking/jogging routine. This is an EXCELLENT book to use as a refresher or as a starter.Flo-Jo has really wonderful tips and leads you every step of the way.No matter what fitness level you are at, this is a must if you are considering walking/jogging and/or running.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Basic Running Book
At first I bought this book for my research project for my English class. I chose running as my topic and eventually this book helped me much.
I am personally a noob at running but just think to start it. After reading this book, I know many things i didn't.
I also read many other running book. They are somewhat not easy to be understood, unlike this book. Though running for dummies gives just general explanation, it's simple and easy to understand, especially for the amateur runners.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book if you never ran
I found this book extremely helpful when I first started exercising. If you have never run before, I believe you will find it helpful. It is a novice book, but we all have to start somewhere!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good overall, especially for Flo-Jo fans
This is a great buy if you are a Flo Jo fan.

For everybody else, this is a typical dummies book, it covers all the major areas of a subject, but it by no means comprehensive or in-depth. As with most dummies book, I recommend them for those looking for a quick introduction/reference to a topic. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Cute illustrations and phrasing.
I thought this book was very cute; however, my two children did not pick it up on their own.Only were interested when I offered to read it to them.My boys are 7 and 8.One reads all the time. The book did offer some cute ideas for children to fit running/fitness into their everyday life. Also, like the idea of encouraging kids to participate in organized race events and how to get started in this process.

5-0 out of 5 stars KIds' Book
The children found this book to be very entertaining. They went through it rather quickly.

5-0 out of 5 stars An open door to an unselfish sport
The rap on kids sports today seems to be about too much, too soon, too much specificity, too much competitiveness, too much pressure, too much incentive to specialize early and practice one sport.

And then there's Carol Goodrow's vision of Kids' Running, which is the the reverse of every reason parents might be afraid of getting their kids involved in sports. Want to run? Great, here's some ways to have fun doing it. Want to ride your bike today instead? Jump rope, play some kickball, play a game with your teammates? No problem, go ahead, you won't even notice you're still running. Want to do a race or two? Nothing but good news.

This book is a reassuring reference for parents, but it's also an empowering menu of fun stuff for kids, too, enough to make their parents wish they were kids again and could be out running the butterfly loops with their friends, too. For more advanced readers, there are characters who can be followed through the book as they figure out this sport for themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful style
Carol has been able to carry forward the delightful style of the "Kids Running" web-site into this equally delightful book. With so many pictures of kids (and their ever-present pet dogs) enjoying the many running activities, and with so many cute rhymes about running and healthy eating, it's hard to imagine any child NOT getting caught up in the fun and excitement!

As "Professor Shoelace", I was also pleased to see that Carol promotes the virtues of good fitting running shoes or sneakers, securely tied with shoelaces. This comes by way of advice on the very first page of the book, as well as by example in the countless pictures of kids wearing colorful running shoes, all neatly tied with colorful shoelaces.

5-0 out of 5 stars Turn off the TV and channel your energy: RUN and get this book!
Carol Goodrow breaks through the finish line with a gold medal finish again!

Recommended for grades 1 to 6, this 82-page gem has content stimulating enough for adult readers, yet colorful, clever and charming enough to read to toddlers.

The information is rock-solid, perfect for a lifelong foundation in health.

This book is a cheerful antedote to wearisome complaints of youth with too much screen time and too little nutritious food. It is not preachy, and has enough informative tidbits and silly riddles to keep readers returning again and again.

Librarians, teachers, parents and grandparents will want to get this mighty treasure. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Getting bored here...!
Enjoyed 'Burning Alive', liked 'Finding the Lost'.But three books in a row with the same plot line is a little much. All three heroines share an overabundance of self-doubt, while their men might as well have been born triplets.Boy Meets Girl, Boy Needs Girl, Girl Runs, Boy Pursues, Girl Capitulates And Is Glad She Did.Ho-hum.

That said, I'm sure I'll buy #4, if only to find out what happens to Nika/Madoc and Grace/Torr, even though I suspect that either Nika or Torr (or both) will be miraculously healed and perform the same boring dance(s) as their predecessors. At least Nika needs Madoc, while he isn't sure what his feelings mean yet.

I really think Shannon Butcher has a lot of potential. So far she hasn't fallen into the trap of filling every single page with spine-tingling action. Her ability to slow down occasionally, gives the reader a chance to get to know her characters and actually come to care what happens to them.I hope things get more interesting in the Sentinels' world.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Best One Yet
Book Three in the "Sentinel Wars Series" is so far the best book in the series. Everything has improved exponentially since book one; writing, character development, dialogue, pace and setting, everything. I am now officially a fan of this series, and in truth, have been since book two, "Finding the Lost."

"Running Scared" focuses on the relationship between Lexi and Zach while the overall storyline progresses and past characters make their appearances, propelling into the first chapter next book, (a much welcomed bonus).

Book four will be entitled "Living Nightmare," and as the title implies looks like it will center around Nika and my favorite Sentinel, Madoc if the fist chapter is any indication.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sentinel wars series
The whole sentinel series is a great read. This was up to the rest of the series.

2-0 out of 5 stars ok, barely
It started off somewhat strong, but I got bored, fast. This third book is basically the same story as the previous two.The sentinals must have a mate to live (already been done, twice).Did I say that already?See how boring that is?

I would have given this story three stars, but I found Lexi soooo annoying. The entire premise of the book surrounds how she believes the sentinals to be evil and brainwashing everyone. Then she sticks to this throughout the entire book and despite everyone she meets and everyone she enounters.Again...boring.What was there to love about her?Yet, Zach follows her around like a lovesick puppy dog and forgives everything she does. Why?If this is all he knows about her can you love someone on the sole bases that you need them to live?Perhaps, but it sounds a whole like it would be a hollow kind of love.

Half way through the book I begin skimming and looking for the very LITTLE tidbits on the vampires and what they were planning.Plus, Madoc and Torr and how they were doing, but those parts of the story were so very minimal.I'll read the next for the simple fact that it is Madoc's story, but I hope Butcher works more on her plot and less on her romance. I don't think romance is her strong point.

5-0 out of 5 stars loved this book!!!!
I love Shannon K.Butcher!!! she has it all her story is so good I'm always waiting for the next one to come out and their not coming out as fast as I would like lol!!This book was wonderful and the sex was hot!!!!but not to much the story was great with or without the sex but I'm sooo glad she put the sex!!! lol!! ... Product Description
Start and run your business with this all-in-one book.

Small business owners are regularly confronted by a bewildering array of legal questions and problems. Ignoring them can lead to disaster -- but with lawyers typically charging $200-$300 an hour, calling one to answer routine legal questions can be a fast track to the poorhouse.

Fortunately, you have a better alternative. Legal Guide for Starting & Running a Small Business clearly explains the practical and legal information you need to:

  • raise start-up money
  • choose between a sole proprietorship, partnership or LLC
  • get licenses and permits
  • buy or sell a business or franchise
  • negotiate a favorable lease
  • insure your business
  • hire independent contractors safely
  • understand small business tax rules
  • pick and protect a good name
  • resolve legal disputes
  • adopt the best customer policies
  • enter into strong contracts
  • cope with financial problems

The 11th edition is revised to provide the latest regulations, tax numbers and business realities in a changing economy. It also provides a start-up checklist, an expanded discussion about choosing a business structure, updates to bankruptcy law -- and much more. (20080502) ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Information Teaser, leaves you feeling empty.
I am slightly disappointed in this book. First off the information presented is fairly helpful if you have absolutely no clue what a LCC or INC is or what it means. Basically each thing is explained in brief detail That info is basically a 3 star rating. Where the product really hits the skids is when they; at the end of the chapter, say "If you would like the forms to file for an LLC please go to NOLO website. Once there you are greeted with a helpful person just looking to remove several hundreds of dollars off of you for the privilege of downloading the forms.

Example of what I am referring to:
    Page 77:
Paperwork for setting up an LLC:
"Setting up an LLC is simple. Typically you must complete 2 basic forms..."
    (Later on the page)
"Form your LLC online. If you're ready to form your LLC you may be able to do much of your work online- including..." "... to get started go to [Nolo Website]."

So its states how easy it is and you can do it all online (for a fee). Instead of offering a PDF to download or use, they want you to pay. This is not the only example of this sort of thing. At the end of most chapters they offer advice on the same website, instead of putting that advice in this book.

They do have some gems in here so it is not 100% junk, its just that to dangle the pay aspect is what brings this book down from a solid 4 star to a 2 star.Front cover says " Legal Guide for Starting and Running a Small Business: The all-in-one business law book" This is where I disagree. If it were ALL-IN-ONE then it would include basic forms for you to emulate and a guide on where to file these at the local, state and federal level.

This book fails in its basic premise that all information for "starting and running" of a business can be found inside. Instead, it is brief in many areas, offers only a few boilerplate letters to emulate, and points you to other books for more details. It seems that it is more of an index book referring to other more detailed guides or sites.

    Pros:
    >> Basic information on business models and levels of business formation.
    >> Good basics for what to look out for legally
    >> Some pretty good tips in later chapters

    Cons:
<< Obvious tie-in to the pay NOLO website makes this a must avoid product.

    Summary:
You can find out more information on the web that is just as accurate as what is in this book. This tome is nothing more than an ad to sell products on a website. While I admit there are some very good tips and information in this book for the novice or beginner, the obtuse way it figures that you will just jump in and use their services to start your corporation leaves me feeling empty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Advice from Nolo Press
I am a big fan of the Nolo Press legal guides, and this one is no exception.

This guide is an invaluable reference for anyone who is starting a business, or who is already in business. It takes you though the steps of deciding what form your business should take and establishing it through raising capital, negotiating leases, working with employers and contractors, legal aspects of client relationships and more.

Although a book is no substitute for professional advice, having access to the information in this book will help you to better understand your options and work more effectively (and inexpensively) with your professional advisors.

5-0 out of 5 stars must-have resource when starting one's own business
This is a fantastic resource for anyone thinking about starting his or her own business -- it covers many of the legal issues that ndsmall business owners will face during the start-up period. It's also a good eye-opener for anyone thinking about starting a business -- making you aware of all of the issues you might not have considered.Although the book won't eliminate the need for a lawyer, it will answer many legal questions and allow the small business owner to mminimize and make the most of those necessary visits with the lawyer.

Topics include choice of legal form (sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation, LLC), structuring agreements, naming the business, licenses & permits, tax basics, raising money, insuring the business, negotiating leases. For those without a concrete plan for a business, there is also information on purchasing an existing business and franchising.Additional topics include employees, with a basic overview of employment laws, credit, contracts, and legal disputes.

At over 450 pages, this book is jam-packed with plenty of useful information.NOLO guides are, in general, very good -- and this is one of the most comprehensive NOLO guides I've seen.It doesn't contain a CD-ROM, as do many of the NOLO guides, but it provides guidance on where to get additional information or forms, starting with the NOLO web site.Overall, this is a worthwhile investment for anyone considering or in the process of starting a new business enterprise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Done!
This guide is perfect for starting a new business. I compared it to the Nolo guide I used when I started my business 5 years ago, and noted some helpful improvements that I had to research independently at the time. This guide had them all lined up, and you could use it as a one-stop shop for most basic questions.

A terrific guide, and must-have for the aspiring owner.

4-0 out of 5 stars Broad Legal Starting Point for Most Small Businesses
I've used Nolo books in the past, in part because we're from the same town (Berkeley) but also because they come highly recommended from my friends and colleagues. So far, I've only utilized the more general coverage Nolo Guides such as [[1413304036:How to Buy a House in California]], and just like the last book, this Small Business guide doesn't try to give an exact step-by-step methodology to accomplishing a particular goal. Instead of giving specific advice, this book tries to explain common pitfalls of Small Business ownership and tries to help you avoid making common mistakes while helping you decide on a direction.

I believe that this book is suitable for a broad spectrum of people considering to start their own small businesses. From initially choosing the best legal form for your business to investigating the required licenses and permits to raising money and dealing with insurance, the book tries to be relevant to most people. At the very least, it will be helpful as a broad overview for the topics that are covered. (There isn't much explicit coverage for internet-based business such as eBay, etc but much of the advice is applicable)

The main value of this book is that it doesn't just say what you should do, rather, it explains the pros and cons of each step in a very approachable manner. It really is a guide for "Starting and Running" a small business! The book gives you what you need to know and empowers you to either get additional information elsewhere or points you in a general direction of where to look.

I don't have my own small business but it was always something I've thought about, so I can't say anything about how effective the book has been for me. However, after reading through the sections that interested me, I feel confident enough to say that I know a lot more than when I started! I will certainly be keeping this book handy for when the time comes! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book but too much alike Running and Fatburning for Women
I liked reading this book. it gave alot of good information. the only down side was that i bought it with Running and Fatburning for Women and the two books had many identical pages. and by many i'd say atleast 30 pages were identical between the two. once i read the first i blew through the second because so many pages were the same. so my advice would be to only get one or the other not both.

I got this book today, Christmas, from my husband. I couldn't put it down and read the entire book. It was great to get some more information on running and how it relates to me as a woman. I ran in high school, but never did any long distances. I completed my first half marathon in June and LOVED it so much. I've been trying to figure out how to incorporate running into my lifestyle. This was a great book. I hope to be a runner for life and feel like this book gave me some new information and insight into how to do that!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting thriller.
This book is a very credible debut novel. I enjoyed the action immensely, as well as the remote setting in the jungles of Columbia. The author has an easy writing style, that is not complicated or pretentious. If you are looking for a light, uncomplicated read which will hold your interest, look no further.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for first novel
Jamie Freveletti did a fine job writing her first novel, "Running from the Devil."The book had plenty of exciting and tense moments that kept me turning the pages. At times, her writing style was distracting. For instance, she often used "many people" or "some people" when more descriptive phrases would have helped the reader become more involved with the scene.Perhaps, "Two young women huddled together, weeping" or "One elderly man was ashen...etc."More foreshadowing would have prepared the reader for motives by the characters that at times seemed to "drop" out of the sky later in the book. The book was complex with many different characters and events happening throughout. The development of main characters would facilitate a more intimate connection to the story.I would like to know more about those characters and what prompted certain actions.I was cheering for Emma and Sumner, but didn't feel like I really knew them.
I feel that Ms. Freveletti has a promising career as a writer and improvement will come with experience and a good editor.I recommend this book because the good points far outweigh the weaker elements.

I was given a free copy of this book to read and review.

4-0 out of 5 stars Running From The Devil
If you want a fast-paced, action thriller filled with surprises, then Running From The Devil by Jamie Freveletti is the book to read. Emma Caldridge (a chemist) is on her way to Columbia when her plane crashes. But this was no accident, and when she escapes and sees the other survivors being taking away by guerillas, she has to make a decision to follow or get lost in the jungle herself. With the help of Cameron Summer , a government agent that was also on the plane, they wreak havoc on the bad guys! I found this book to be a highly exciting thriller!

4-0 out of 5 stars Recommended
Publishers Weekly, etc., were rather hard on this novel, I think. It's a very effective thriller with an engaging main character. It recently won Best First Novel by the International Thriller Writers, Inc., and although literary awards of any type should be viewed with skepticism, it does at least suggest this novel is worth reading. And it is. I enjoyed it quite a bit--as both a member of ITW and as a thriller novelist myself--and would recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars This book could have been so much better
if only a little editorial discipline were applied. The chapters are indeed short and choppy. The chapters with the DOD are so cliched you feel like you've read them a hundred times before. Emma Caldridge is a somewhat interesting character, if a little bit unbelievable. (lots of Mary Sue) A lot more could have been done with Cameron Sumner, who is a fascinating character. The scenes in the jungle with the incredible brutality of the Columbian rebels (terrorists is a better word) are intense and volatile. I just wish the rest of the book would have been that way. Also, it would have helped if the author was a bit more subtle on some things; letting the reader figure out who are the good guys and the bad would have been more challenging other than bascially being told. As it is, we know the bad guys all watch Fox News and the good guys watch MSNBC. For those who care, the author drops several ham handed clues to her own political leanings. Frankly, that should have been left out. Just tell your story; leave off the political posturing. Although the plot was intriguing and different on this book, I doubt that I'll be back for a second one. ... Read more

    Product Description

NFL running back Warrick Dunn is truly one of the good guys in the world of sports. And in this revealing autobiography, written with New York Times bestselling author Don Yaeger, Dunn tells his incredibly moving, inspirational story of courage and determination in the face of devastating loss, a story that makes his achievements on the football field that much more amazing.

Warrick Dunn and his five brothers and sisters all idolized their mother, Baton Rouge police officer Betty Smothers. As the oldest, Dunn was the closest to her, and the man of the house. On January 7, 1993, while the single mother worked a second job as a supermarket security guard, Betty Smothers was ambushed, shot, and killed while making a bank deposit. Dunn—then a high school senior just weeks away from choosing among his college football scholarship offers—was devastated.

Dunn was only eighteen when circumstances changed and he had to look after his five siblings, but somehow he managed to enroll at Florida State and, in only his freshman year, help their team quarterback, Heisman Trophy winner and roommate Charlie Ward, win the National Championship for the 1993–94 season. And this was just the beginning of Dunn's successful career as a student athlete, which resulted in his selection to the FSU Hall of Fame.

Despite his modest size, Dunn's athleticism, incomparable drive, and personality convinced Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Tony Dungy to select Dunn in the first round of the 1997 draft with the twelth overall pick. During his career with the Bucs and, subsequently, the Atlanta Falcons, Dunn amassed five 1,000-yard rushing seasons, was selected to the NFL Pro Bowl three times, and became one of only twenty-three running backs to exceed the 10,000-yard career rushing mark. In 2008, he returned to the Bucs seeking to continue his success. But perhaps his greatest achievement during his time as an NFL player came off the field when he started a foundation called Homes for the Holidays, a charity that helps single parents become homeowners. To date, he has placed 74 single parents and their 192 dependents in fully furnished and outfitted homes in Tampa, Tallahassee, Baton Rouge, and Atlanta.

But there was one person Dunn neglected in his drive to help others—himself. He spent all of his emotional energy on his siblings and their pain, and never focused on his own. His only solace was the football field, where he truly was running for his life. It wasn't until a Falcons teammate suggested psychological counseling that Dunn began to battle the demons still haunting him from his mother's death.

Uplifting and thought-provoking, Running for My Life is the story of an athlete's drive to help his family and ensure that his mother's legacy and values continue—the story of what it really takes to be a man.

5-0 out of 5 stars Running for my life
This book I will say has been one of the best I have read for a long time. Mr Dunn has been a hero of mine on and off the field for a long time too. The book was well written, for it repeating itself, I do not agree with that. I call it refreshing everyones memory. It was a very emotional book to read, I was crying and cheering as I read it. Even if you are not a NFL fan, it is a great book on life and makes you think why things happen for a reason. Before i read this book I knew Dunn on the field more then off. Now I can say one of the best running backs is also a genuine down to earth person. The one quote by Frederick Douglass, that was included in this book made me really think that was "It is easier to build strong children then to repair broken men. That is what America needs now a days and Warrick Dunn has proved that it can be done in this book and he has done it in his life. I will be buying many copies for gifts.

5-0 out of 5 stars I learned quite a bit about a personal hero of mine.
I enjoyed this book and learned quite a bit about a guy I always admired. When you watch football games you don't know all this kind of detail about a player.I never knew how much the death of Warrick Dunn's mom affected him and his family. My favorite two players in the NFL are Warrick and Brett Farvre. Now it looks like they are both out of the NFL.
Anyway, if you are a fan of Warrick or a fan of FSU football, you have to read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Story, Good Book
Warrick Dunn is an amazing human being as well as one of the best running backs of all time.He is my favorite player in the NFL.The flow of the story is a little back and forth at times, but is a very good read and an amazing and inspiring story!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a must read....
for the coaches that devote and dedicate their time and talents to our children. Warrick Dunn repeatedly gives his successes to the coaches that helped him to become who he is today. His dedication to his family, before and after the tragedy, are not only inspirational, but make him a hero among heroes. I read, I cried, I read some more, I cried some more.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a 'feel good' story, I bought this book for my son who is a middle and high school coach to see how inspiring he may be to his athletes. A true role model not only as a son, but as a sibling, a team player and as a community advocate.
