3-0 out of 5 stars Little Black Sambo
This is a book that I read when I was younger and I now read today. I feel that this is a good story to read to children because it teaches you about patience with animals and courage.I know I can't wait to read an updated version so it is not racist. I am not racist myself but I feel that the book is kind of racist. ... Read more

Product Description
... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars It is a good thing that the advance of sensibility has passed two of these stories by
While I remember reading these three stories in elementary school classes, my recollection does not extend to whether it was from our class reader or from supplemental books. After completing "Black Sambo" my friends and I talked about Little Black Sambo eating one hundred and sixty-nine pancakes that were made from the butter of the tigers. If it were not for the blatantly racist aspects of the story, "Black Sambo" would be a very good tale; the concept of the danger from the tigers and how he tricks them into sparing his life is a good story for children.
"The Little Red Hen" is a story about the value of work and those that do not share in the work are not allowed to reap the rewards. This is a lesson that children must learn at an early age and farm animals are good teachers. "Peter Rabbit" is less suitable as a story for children, children have a natural affinity for rabbits and the threat of a misbehaving rabbit being put in a pie can be unsettling to children.
Political correctness is a force that at times takes the world down paths to absurdity. However, in the case of "Black Sambo" and "Peter Rabbit", the changes in children's stories forced by political correctness are proper and beneficial.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better Homes and Gardens Story Book
I purchased this book for my children almost 40 years ago.During that time the binding has come loose and is not good enough to pass down to my Great Grandchildren. I was so surprised and delighted to find not only one but two copies of this book. The prices were very reasonable and the books were in brand new condition. Now both of my great grandchildren will each have a copy of this family treasured book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better Homes & Garden Story book
Old collectible book with older stories.I remember as a child and wanted a copy since my grandma read the stories to me.Stories are a little old for today in my opinion.I also wanted the old copy that had the now presumptively banned Little Black Sambo story.Recommended as a collectible.

3-0 out of 5 stars Better Homes and Gardens Storybook
This was not the book I thought I ordered.I wanted the first Better Homes and Gardens Storybook. This one does not have either familiar or particularly interesting stories.I do not know how I would have known that this would be the book I would receive and not the one I believed I had ordered.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fondest memories from childhood reading
This was my favorite story book as a child. It made such an impression on me that even after 40+ years, I still remember exactly the title and how it looked. Now I have found it again, and I just know my son is going to love the pictures & interactive stories just as much as I did.I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes (or doesn't!) to read to their kids - "The Little Red Hen" has little tiny pictures in place of some of the words, which is such great fun for the little ones who can't read yet. I remember going from blur of letters to actually being able to read this myself, with how many times I made my dad read it to me!Wonderful book, I can't praise it enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC OF MY CHILDHOOD
My grandmother gave me this book for Christmas in 1952.My favorite story was the The Story of the Live Dolls.I made my mother read it to me over and over. When my granddaughter was three, I searched the internet for this book...so I could read that story to her. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
"The jolly and exciting tale of the little boy who lost his red coat and his blue trousers and his purple shoes but who was saved from the tigers to eat 169 pancakes for his supper, has been universally loved by generations of children. First written in 1899, the story has become a childhood classic and the authorized American edition with the original drawings by the author has sold hundreds of thousands of copies.

Little Black Sambo is a book that speaks the common language of all nations, and has added more to the joy of little children than perhaps any other story. They love to hear it again and again; to read it to themselves; to act it out in their play. "
