Good information
Both snorkeling and diving locations were mapped out and described. Travel tips seemed relevant and useful as did the safety tips.

Don't Leave Home Without It!
I found LP's Diving & Snorkeling Baja California indispensable. By far, it is the most handy guide book offered about scuba diving on the peninsula.The combination of accurate maps, superb photos, and excellent dive site descriptions make this book a winner.What I also particularly enjoyed was the appendix of marine life found in Baja.Although not complete in every detail (this book would be a LOT heavier!) for a dive foray down onto the peninsula it is perfect.This book wasn't written to be a tome; its strength lies in its ability to accurately project experiences a diver may encounter at each of the sites to include marine biology, underwater geology, and level of difficulty.The two sections of the book that I found most valuable were 1) the description of El Bajo, the shallow underwater volcano you can dive on pg. 105 (for a REALLY thorough description read "Diving The Seamount") and the section on the mysterious Islas de Revillagigedo dive sites several hundred miles south of Cabo beginning on pg. 124.As an added bonus, the major dive operators, hotels, recompression chambers (you never know!) are listed in various sections of this guide.Well done!

Good introduction to Baja diving
This book describes many of the major diving areas in Baja.Unfortunately, it really doesn't get specific about many of the dive sites.It's a good introduction, and will help you ask informative questions, but if you are looking at diving sites on your own, this book falls short.The book gives a nice overview of Baja topside and also contains a nice marine life identification section.If you are trying to get an idea of where you'd like to go and what you can expect to see, this book fits the bill....

Great Information on Baja.
I used this book for a trip to baja two summers ago. It was a great reference for finding good dive sites. The pictures are wonderful and the maps are very helpful. If you are planning to go to Baja to dive then be sure to pick up this book and plan to spend some quality time in La Paz!

Misleading names
It is a good overview book, but when we got to Belize realized that a lot of the sites that are listed are not called by the same name at all - so hard to determine what sites we had really dived compared to the book.Also it covers a lot of area in Belize (if you are going to Ambergris Caye then maybe 1/2 or 2/3 of the book is useful).

Not so informative...
This is a fair book, but loads of sites are missing (from this edition at least) and much of the information I expected to find was not in it - particularly the prices and quality of the various diving shops. It is a mere overview of what you find under the sea, with little on how to actually get to that point.

Better than nothing.
While I agree with the previous 2 reviewers.I did find the book helpful as a brief and very general overview of what was available and what there was to see in those dive areas.It put the areas in geographical perspective for me and was a nice addition to the dive briefing.After the dive, the fish ID part was a nice memory jogger for doing my logbook entries.

However, it does not help with planning a dive or a dive trip.You can get more info on that free from websites, magazines and dive tour specialists.

Overall better than nothing if you're into filling out your logbook.

Pointless
This book has no discernible value to anyone planning a dive trip to Belize. First, it does not tell you which dive sites are good and which are worth skipping. This makes it difficult to plan your trip, assuming you have limited time and money to spend. The book does not even contain a list of top 5 or 10 recommended sites in the country.

Second, the book has no information on costs or other logistical aspects of a dive trip. For example, it mentions that Dangriga is the departure point for diving certain reefs, but doesn't tell you that there are no dive shops in Dangriga: to do any diving around there, you have to go thru an out-of-town resort, which is highly inconvenient.

Third, the capsule descriptions of 66 specific dive sites -- the heart of the book -- don't tell you anything meaningful and are irrelevant anyway because dive shops, not customers, choose which sites are visited. (Customers can choose which area they want to go to, but the dive shops select the specific sites within that area.)

Finally, although the book was updated in June 2002, it ignores the fact that in October 2001, Hurricane Iris devastated the sourthern diving hub of Placencia. The reefs in this area are heavily damaged and therefore not worth visiting. The failure to update the book to account for this major development can only be explained by bad faith on the part of Lonely Planet, which should be ashamed to have put such a lousy product on the market.

Save your money
This book is not worth buying.It provides very little information on specific dive sites. I did not use the book once to make a dive choice during two weeks in Southern Belize. A good dive book for Belize is really needed - it was difficult to locate good dive operators for some areas...but this book was of no value.

No Coordinates
I am afraid I was sorely dissapointed by this book. I brought the book hoping for not only a list of dive sites but also the exact latitudes and longitudes of the dive sites. The book only had very vague maps that were lucky to get you within 2 miles of the dive site.

Whats the point of giving you all that information on a dive site except how to get there!!! All the information in the book (except the coordinates of the dive sites) is just as easily obtained from the local dive companies, so I simply dont see the point in purchasing the book.

About the only good thing was it allows you to plan dives before you even get to Fiji. The book only had 3 dive sites listed for the Yasawa Islands - which have lots of good dive sites.

Given the book was published in 2000 and I was in Fiji in 2009 I guess the book is basically getting quite dated now.

Dive sites like Gotham City, which got its name after the Bat fish that live there, no longer seem to have any Bat fish. Sad but possibly a factor of the age of the book and locals who have been eating the bat fish?

Forget Snorkeling Info
I bought this book primarily because I am going to Fiji in two months and wanted info on snorkeling.Boy was I surprised to find only half a page devoted to snorkeling.The rest of the book is a brief description of various dive sites.

The book does have nice pictures and basic information regarding the more popular dive sites in Fiji.But as a snorkeling reference, it is worthless.

For Scuba Divers Only
This is an attractive book which the scuba diver will want to order. It maps and describes 74 of Fiji's top dive sites and the color photography is excellent. Despite the title, however, those interested in beach-based snorkeling will find little of use here as almost all of the sites included are accessible by boat only. Even the new Waitabu Marine Park off Taveuni is mentioned only in passing. There's virtually no practical resort or restaurant information, and the first quarter of the book is devoted to brochure-style hype you can read on almost any Fiji website. Critical reviews of dive facilities are strikingly absent, so this book is of no help in selecting a specific scuba operator. Five pages of listings in the back of the book provide basic contact information, but even this is out of date as all Fiji telephone numbers have increased from six to seven digits since the book was published. Most of the email addresses are also wrong, so substitute @connect.com.fj whenever you see @is.com.fj. Nevertheless, when one considers the cost of a scuba tour to the South Pacific and the lack of any alternative Fiji dive guide, all of the above criticisms are mute and serious divers will click this title straight into their shopping carts.

Lacking basic information
This book is seemingly a compilation of dive locations frequented by dive resorts, with little independent research or reviews of specific dive outfitters.The book lacks basic information on water temperatures, currents, winds and seasonal influences.The independent traveller primarily interested in snorkeling will also be disappointed in the lack of practical information on the best sections of the main islands for shoreline snorkeling.

perfectly targeted
This book delivers what it promises.It offers a complete evaluation of all the dive/snorkel sites in the Bay Islands - what features each site possesses and what fish.As a snorkeler, I appreciated the detail about which areas are ideal for snorkeling and which can be accessed by the shore.The book does not go into detail about the operators, which is fine by me.Also, you still might want to invest in a regular travel guide for the rest of Honduras.But it bears repeating that this book is exceptionally complete in covering all the diving spots off the northern coast of Honduras.If you plan to do any diving at all, I wouldn't be without it.

All the information you need
I live in Utila in the Bay Islands in Honduras and i see many people arriving with this book in their hand and all of them tell me that they use it all of the time and it is an invaluable source of information.

I myself have seen it and read it i would say that it is the best travel guide on Honduras it gives you all the information you will need.

This should be standard equipment to dive NC!
I've had this book since it was released in 1991. I actually met Rod Farb at a NC Diving Event. I live in NC and do a fair amount of diving off the coast and always, always, always take this book with me.

Rod's knowledge and experience is evident in every page. The author gives a brief history of each wreck, exact coordinates to locate the wreck, how the wreck rests at the bottom, and unique facts about the resting site. The book also include dive charters all over the Carolina's and a great resource guide.

When I say brief history, I mean to the point and concise but the author tells you interesting facts, such as, what company built the ship, other names the ship had, how it came to rest in the graveyard of the Atlantic. In some of the shipwrecks he retells accounts of the crew and their rescue or demise.

Each wreck listed has everything you need to know to plan your day of diving and develope a safe fun dive plan. From depth of the water the wreck is resting in, to the artifacts you can discover in the sand, and if you can retrieve anything from the wreck. He even shows diagrams and pictures of the layout of the wreck on the bottom of the ocean.

This is a facinating book if your interested in shipwrecks of all kinds and a must have if you are an avid scuba diver off the coast of NC. All sorts of wrecks are contained in the pages of this book from the purposely sunk for artifical reefs, to the casualties of storms, and the fatalities of War.

Good wreck histories and descriptions
Having lived on the Outer Banks growing up, but not getting into diving until recent years, I was suprised at the extent of the wrecks off the North Carolina Coast, and the WWII historical perspective.On the positive side, this book presents an extensive history of many of the wrecks, depths, temperatures, and dive charters operating to the wrecks.On the negative side, I was expecting more gear and equipment recommendations, and explanation of techniques used on the wrecks, but didn't find it.

"THE" book for the beginning and experienced wreck diver!
Extremely well written and packed with lots of useful information. My only regret is that I did not have this book before I went on my first wreck dive. Book goes into detail on wrecks up and down the NC coast - a must for anyone with an interest in diving the Graveyard of the Atlantic. Not only are wrecks given a full review, but also charter companies with boat specs and strengths and weaknesses of each charter.You cannot call yourself a serious wreck diver without this wreck bible.

One of the best references for the Atlantic diving community
Mr. Farb has imparted an impressive degree of research and personal diving experience in this second edition to his original 1985 work.The reader will find comprehensive histories of each wreck featured, detailed maps ofthe wrecks as they presently exist, and useful advice on how to dive eachwreck.Even sport fishermen will find this work useful, as each wreckdescription contains useful information on what species inhabits the area. Experienced divers and recreational fishermen are yearning for a 3rdedition, however, since time and weather have impacted many of these wrecksand some mysteries have been solved, such as the location of the"Ario" wreck, while new mysteries have been uncovered (are thePapoose and Hutton wrecks reversed?).Additionally, each wreck descriptionshould include precise GPS or Loran coordinates to assist first timevisitors to the wreck sites. Many locations in the 2nd edition, whenprovided, are often inadequate for the reader to find the wrecks.

Rod Farb has long been known as one of the experts on finding and exploring shipwrecks.This book passes some of his knowledge onto the rest of the diving community, as well as to anybody interested in maritime history. Good Book
Bought this book before a first ever dive trip on a first time trip to Cozumel.Loved the breakdowns on all the reefs & they were pretty much spot on.I think that it may be an older book because we stayed at the Iberostar in the Southern part of the island & the book had no mention of this resort but did mention quite a few others.
If you're looking for a first timer's book to the island, this is a fantastic choice.

Good Resource
I like guide books and picked this and picked this one for a trip to Mexico.

Broken down very well by dive site location an general overview (depth, skill level) together with a description of the dive sites in terms of formations and marine life.

It is a very good overall guide that you can skim during a plane flight to see what you might be interested in going to and pretty accurate based on the places I have been to.

A great general resource
This is a great general diving resource.I loved the pictures for each dive site and the descriptions of each.The sites are broken down by diving ability which makes it easy to find exactly the type of dive you're looking for.It supplies a good overview of what can be expected to be seen on each dive.The compactness is a plus as well - it's very easy to throw in a bag.

NOTE: We traveled to Cozemel BEFORE the 2005 hurricane season.I can't vouch for what effect it had on the reef and how it now relates to this book - especially the shallower dives.

Good - but too short
I bought this book for our upcoming trip to Cozumel. The book is good, the information is really good. The book is written in an easy to read and concise language. THe pictures are astonishing.

My main reason for only giving it 3 stars is that it is not nearly comprehensive enough. I really need a much larger book about the different underwater life in Cozumel so I really know what I see when I get there.

I would also love to see further information about favorite snorkel spots on the island. The additional info about the history of the island is nice info to have - but if I were to choose between that and more comprehensive underwater info I would go with the underwater info.

Good guide, but lacking detail
This guide is helpful, but could be more informative.We will be diving from our own boat, and could use more information about the dives themselves, rather than the history of the site or wreck.The guide should also have GPS coordinates, description of the moorings, etc.

This is a great book, and I take it along every time I go diving in the Keys (about once or twice a month).All of the popular dive sites are featured in this book, and there are a lot of pictures that truly represent the diving in the area.I have found the information to be highly accurate when describing the sites, though somewhat vague at times.This book is small in size, so I can even zip it up inside my log book so it stay dry.

Finally a scuba book for the layman!
Though, I've been certified for 10 years, I'm relatively new to diving, as I don't get to dive as often as I'd like to.As a result, I try to read everything I can about it.I borrowed this book from the library and enjoyed it thoroughly. It's a basic, yet somewhat detailed intro into the world of scuba.
It's a book I'd recommend reading to anyone wanting to know more about the sport, but have no interest in the technical aspects of it. There's so much information out there. It makes it hard to find something simple to read all in one place. This book does that.

Too Basic... save yourself the money on this book
The information is very basic... too basic.Though the writer's diving experience is pretty useful, I can get these information when I talk to other divers.If you are going to move into advance diving courses, such as Advance Open Water, forget about this book, the information presented in the Advance OW manual is more detailed.If you want to get other divers' dive experience, get onto the Net (e.g. News groups rec.suba) or just talk to other divers/your instructor.Don't waste your money on this book.

"The Unoffical Primer for Scuba Diving!"
As a novice to the sport of Scuba Diving I attempted to purchase everybook I could find on the subject. Most of the books I read were veryinformative, but a little like reading reference manuals. 'Diving on theEdge' is informative and a very good read. 'Diving on the Edge' is notmeant to be a 'How to Book', it is meant to bring the mystery of ScubaDiving to the real world through humor and information. "...aprerequisite to becoming truly educated about the sport." I wish I hadfound this book first! Not many pictures, but loads of honest insight intothe world of Scuba Diving. I really enjoyed reading it!

Michael Bane is a gifted writer who presents an informed and informative overview of diving. It's an interesting overview of this great activity. It's directed at new divers, but there are tidbits and insights thatexperienced divers will appreciate too.

Good Deal
This little book is great: up to date info, good pics, details, easy to read.

Almost, but not quite so 4/5
Notice how the title of the book is "LP Diving AND SNORKELING Bonaire?"Well, let's just say that Tim needs to: 1) update the book - it's from 2006; and 2) get some additional info in here about the phenomenal snorkeling opportunities (or change the title.)I understand it's primarily a diving guide, and that's fine, but if you add the bit about snorkeling, well, then my expectation is that it will contain plenty of information about snorkeling opportunities.It doesn't.Nevertheless, I give kudos to a well done book because if you combine this info with the tourist guides/maps from Bonaire you'll find everything you need.The reality is that the Bonaire Tourist Center in downtown Kralendijk will have EVERYTHING that you need and it will do a better job of highlighting the snorkeling spots, and you'll save the $16 or whatever I paid for this book.

The bottom line:could be better, but works quite well as a supplemental guide book.Once you're in the water you'll understand why the dive sites are so popular.I happened to be pretty impressed with the snorkeling and IMHO, the book falls a bit short in that department.In case you're wondering, no - I don't dive.But you don't have to dive to appreciate the incredible marine life in the waters of Bonaire - it is an amazing place - and is by far the BEST snorkeling my wife & I have ever encountered.Forget Grand Cayman, or St. John, or Cozumel - I could live out the rest of my life on this underwater paradise.

Recommended, but you don't have to buy it since you can get everything that is inside the book elsewhere, for FREE.

THE PHOTOS ARE NICE - DIVE DESCRIPTIONS COULD BE BETTER
I HAVE BEEN USING THE BONAIRE SHORE DIVING MADE EASY book for several years.I found the overall dive descriptions (shore entries, conditions, etc) to be better in this book than in the diving & snorkeling Bonaire book.

The diving & snorkeling Bonaire book also contains some misleading medical advice.For example - the Sea Urchin paragraph states that you should avoid contact with sea urchins (very true).It then states that you should treat by administering CPR until the pain subsides.Interesting advice!

The photos are the best part of the book.

As a master diver who has dived over 50 years and has visited many of Fiji's dive sites, I would advise any potential diving visitor to save their money here and buy the newer and much more complete Lonely Planet "Diving and Snorkeling Fiji" by renowned dive guides Casey Mahaney and Astrid Witte (also available on Amazon). Just be aware- Fiji has so many and varied dive sites visited by day operations and liveaboards NO book can really do justice comprehensively. Nope, no connections with LP or Mahaney, I just want to save other divers the trouble... and if you love diving, you will LOVE Fiji diving!

Right On Information!
I found this book to be incrediably useful.I purchased the guide book before my trip to North Carolina and found the detail about Nitrox availability, camera friendly dive boats, and dive shops to be right on the mark!I've never seen this kind of detail available in any other diving guide book.
I definatley recommend this book to any diver planning a diving vacation.

SUBJECTIVE VIEWS, INTERESTING CHOICES, GOOD SUGGESTIONS
A diver for just two years, I have already used this Unofficial Guide on at least three occasions.Yes, the choices presented are highly subjective (as most diving guides tend to be), but there are a wide range of locales and choices to get one started.I have begun all of my diving vacations by referring first to this guide...then researching more thoroughly on the internet.Usually, I end up using one of the dive operators and diving resorts which the book has suggested and finish the process by making reservations via the internet or by phone.If you enjoy reading more comprehensively about diving before making your decision, look elsewhere...if you are like me and prefer to glance at something more condensed or capsulized, check out "World's Best Diving Vacations."

Interesting and Informative
This book is a must have for anyone traveling to diving/snorkeling destinations.My husband and I recently used it while traveling to Long Island Bahamas.Information on lodging, restaurants and points of interest were right on the mark.We have recommended this book to friends who found it very useful also.

Divers and non-divers alike would benefit from this guide.The author writes in an informative and interesting style, giving personal and historical information.It is enjoyable and easy to read.I pick it up for pleasure to read about places I want to travel to in the future.

This guide makes it possible to travel with confidence to completely unfamiliar places, knowing what to expect when you get there.Don't go diving without it.

Indispensible for the traveling diver
This Unofficial Guide is a must-have if you like to keep your gear-bag packed for your next adventure. Jean Pierce has been there, done it and dived it.Having dived from Palau to Peurto Rico, myself, I thought I knew all there was to know about getting to the world's best diving, but this book has opened my eyes to even more. Informative, and written from a diver's eyes (as opposed to the travel agent's); it gives you the information you need to know if you want to get maximum bang for your diving dollar and diving time. I believe in traveling light, but I will always find room for this book in my bag -- it's just that necessary.

Extremely limited perspective
An absolute waste of money! As it turns out, I've been diving recently at many of the locations listed plus quite a few others. Given the title, I thought the list would be quite comprehensive. I expect there will always be differences of Opinion on subjects like this, but I can't figure out the logic of the locations chosen. The authors maintain that ease of travel is important to them, then list Heron Island Australia, but leave out locations like Bali. Well Organized info and lots of photos!
There are great photos and the contents are divided up nicely: overview of scotland, diving in scotland, diving along the east coast, scapa flow, shetland islands, outer hebrides, NW coast, etc...and a chapter on scotish marine life. The appendices have valuable info on Dive Centers and Services as well as, Emergency Information. There is specific info on Depth and Visability, required diving experts, bottom terrain, currents, marine life, safety tips, local dive shops and charters, accommodations and transportation. The dive sites and difficulty ratings of the site are shown on convenient color maps. It's a nice guide for anyone considering diving in Scotland or for the diving enthusiast.
