5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginner or seasoned kayaker
This is one of my first expedition kayaking books, bought back in '93. Many of the facts presented there still stick with me. The newest edition is the best yet. Dowd's writing is accurate, interesting, and necessary for a sport that is so much fun but has a dearth of writers able to translate that fun into print. Really makes one want to go kayak! Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Any level kayaker will learn something here
This is a great book! I read it as a beginner, and will hold onto it as a reference. Anyone who kayaks should know the info in this book. Written with enthusiasm for the sport, it is not at all a dry read.(Pun intended.)

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books on Sea Kayaking that I have ever read!
I am not an avid reader, and I usually lose interest in a book and place it on the shelf mid way through if the author doesn't keep my interest. John Dowd had not only captivated my interest, but made it hard for me to put it down. Some of the best and informative information about Sea Kayaking that I have read yet. It should be a "Must Read" for any person involved in the sport of Sea Kayaking, beginner to novice. 5 Star Rating above all others!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
Dowd has a way of sounding like your dad and the tone of the book is very relaxed and easy to follow. It claims to be pitched at intermediate kayakers starting out on expeditions yet basic skills like bracing, sculling and rolling are included. Even the most basic things that are left out are assumed by their absence and that keeps the book from being patronising in an overly wordy `beginners guide' type way.

He gives a very informative overview of the sport and its locations from polar kayaking to the tropics. He also gives a reassuring overview of a sea kayak's `sea worthiness' (dependent on the paddler) explaining some hurricane force winds he has personally endured in a kayak. He also discusses at length the issue of kayaking alone and concludes that one can kayak safely alone, in fact he even suggests kayaking in numbers can give a false sense of security.

Dowd discusses buying a kayak and refreshingly advises `keep in my mind your original image - how you saw yourself with your boat' which I found to be excellent advice.

This book is a very good introduction to sea kayaking and an interesting read. It is also a bible-like source of information. As Paul Theroux said on the jacket "quiet simply the best book available on this wonderful sport"

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential kayaking book
This is a fabulous book on sea kayaking.I loved reading it because of the very useful information and mix of serious and humorous writing styles.A must read - and you'll want to read it several times to soak up all the great information.Highly recommended for any kayaker. His exploits are impressive and inspiring. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference
As a dedicated sea kayaker, I found this book to be an excellent addition to my library on sea kayaking. It's beautifully illustrated with numerous high-quality photographs.I wouldn't characterize it as an instructional book but more of a celebration and introduction to kayaking in challenging "big water" conditions. There's enough information to get one's appetite engaged and probably enough to get one started in learning the techniques needed to manage those conditions. However, it shouldn't be regarded as a substitute for formal instruction and practice. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Funny and informative
This book has a lot of GREAT information in it.It gets the points across by funny but sometimes very serious cartoons and illustrations. There is a lot of emphasis on safety which is very important to learn up front.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This book is fantastic. The pictures combine humor with instruction, and the book itself covers a lot of basics for those just learning about sea kayaking. I've been very happy with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, Funny and Informative!
This is a great books. You almost have to see it to really appreciate it. There are thousands of hand-drawn images which makes everything very, very easy to understand. They make the book fun and you'll even get a giggle out of a few of them. It's definitely worth the money!

5-0 out of 5 stars the complete package: informative and entertaining
This book is a superb resource for all sea kayakers, from aspiring novices to adrenaline-seeking rock garden explorers.Better than probably any other instructional book on sea kayaking does, Robison provides something for everyone. He thoroughly presents a comprehensive range of basic paddling skills and sprinkles among them subtle insights, tricks and tips derived from his impressive paddling career. As a former professional sea kayaking guide, I would recommend this resource to all sea kayakers. You are bound to learn from it and you will smile and giggle as you do.The illustrations bring the concepts to life and make the information quite accessible. An essential book for any sea kayaking library.

5-0 out of 5 stars You will enjoy this book!
Sea Kayaking Illustrated is simply an outstanding guide for anybody who wants to immerse themselves in the marvelous world of sea kayaking.Although I might be considered an expert level sea kayaker, this book can serve as an excellent introductory level primer, yet has plenty to offer the more advanced practitioners of the craft. As a seasoned veteran of the wind and waves, I was pleasantly surprised to find lots of information in the book that was new to me, and presented in ways I hadn't before considered. There's everything from nuts and bolts basics to more advanced tricks of the trade.Everything from common sense kayak-carrying techniques to tips on how to deal with the various wildlife you'll encounter.

As you can tell, I love this book. For the coup-de-grace, it's entertainingly illustrated and humorous, so you don't feel like you're reading a textbook. This is the first work i've read by Robison, but this is atalented author/illustrator, heck i'd probably read a book about druid preening osprey if he wrote it.I strongly recommend it for anyone who's into sea kayaking (or who wants to get into it).And then you look at the price of the book and realize it's really a no-brainer to buy it!Shred on!!! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars A Confused Laundry List
Derek Hutchinson has led kayaking expeditions around the world and teacheshighly regarded seminars on the sport. However, he seems unable to clearlytranslate this teaching ability to print. This book reads like a laundrylist of things to do in a kayak: equipment choices, paddle strokes, rescuetechniques, rolling, surfing maneuvers, etc.; without rhyme or reason as totheir purpose or when they should be executed. The book does cover acomplete range of topics relevant to the sea kayaker: all topics justmentioned plus weather, tides, navigation, wind, etc. Unfortunately, manysections are out-of-date, such as the equipment section; a lot ofinformation, such as that on nautical charts and on weather, is specific tokayaking in Britain; and some information, such as that on tidal currents,is just plain wrong.I did learn quite a lot from the sections on turningstrokes and eskimo rolling, but not as much as I feel I should have and notenough to know where or when to use a particular technique.Overall, I wasdisappointed with the quality of instruction presented in this book.

Novice paddlers and seasoned veterans alike will find this a highly readable and eminently sensible guidebook to the essentials of safe and enjoyable sea kayaking. Forget the macho approach--this is an instructional for women, written by a woman. Basing her instructive technique on the premise that women hail from the "talk it over and think it through first" school of outdoor learning, author Shelley Johnson's tone is friendly and conversational. Whether discussing useful ways to carry and transport a kayak, getting in and out of it, or staying afloat, she is quick to offer supportive, practical advice. Yes, for instance, proper paddling techniques are difficult to master; but with the easy-to-follow captioned photographs provided, forward, backward, turning, and support strokes are a whole lot easier to understand and ultimately execute. If your greatest fears are the "wet exit" (capsizing) and hypothermia, you'll be pleased to learn there are myriad ways to prepare for and/or prevent such safety hazards. In addition to lending her own expertise, Johnson also includes comments, stories, and instruction from veteran water women of all ages. Chapters on weather/tidal conditions, equipment, and heading out with children all brim with excellent tips and straightforward advice. A resource listing is also included. So if you want the lowdown on how to be well prepared, properly geared, and safety conscious in a sea kayak, this edition of the Ragged Mountain Press Woman's Guide series points the way. --Martha SilanoBook Description

The authorhas clearly done her research in planning each trip, incorporating her ownknowledge and experience with that of local paddlers who have done thesetrips for years. Venn's style is easy to read and follow, and if you have anavigational chart of the area it is very easy to map her suggested routeusing her text descriptions and the maps provided. The introductioncontains very brief overviews of such general topics as equipment, navigation, and rescues, but because of the limited space delegated them, these topics are best covered elsewhere. 5-0 out of 5 stars Read this book before purchasing a kayak
I like to browse the boating sections of outdoor stores and listen to the staff recommend equipment to people just getting started in kayaking. It can be a terrific learning experience and the best stores will always recommend good instructional manuals and the importance of taking lessons. The one book they always seem to suggest is Shelley Johnson's Sea Kayaker's Handbook. It covers all the basics but goes one step further. For instance; it is commonly explained that "the longer a boat is the faster it will go and the better it will track". There is a sidebar entitled "It isn't so simple" which carries the explanation a little further. Another section covers how to handle wind. Reading this section would be very helpful to a new paddler purchasing their first boat because one of the basic decisions is whether to have a rudder or skeg. A little knowledge here could save a lot of money and make the sport much more enjoyable. Read this book, ask questions of a knowledgeable salesman, buy a boat, take a lesson or two, have fun, see you on the water!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great comprehensive reference for new sea kayaker
Prior to getting this book I had one lesson and had paddled five or six times mostly in ocean harbors and estuaries. I have paddled several times since. I have done a fair amount of small boat sailing and canoeing before taking up kayaking.

The Complete Sea Kayaker's Handbook did a great job helping to fill in my knowledge of kayaking in general and to help "remind" me of some of what I learned in my lesson. It is well put together and has a nice mix of anecdote and information, with more of the latter. The book is specific to sea kayaking which I also appreciated. I am not terribly interested in white water kayaking and didnt want a book that wasted my time with more then casual information on the subject.

Hightlights for me:
- Detailed and well presented information on kayak design and construction.
- Nice explanations of paddle technique I was actually able to apply after I read the book (as a supplement to my lesson).
- Informative chapters on navigation and logistics without belaboring the subjects.
- Interesting side-bars going into more detail on one point or another throughout the book.

I think the best thing about the book is Shelley's easy going yet informative writing style. The illustrations and photos were clear and useful. The tone of the book was that of a very well informed friend rather then some kind of uber-kayaker. This book worked for me. Good luck in your paddles!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for planning your eco-trip
Thank you Nigel Foster for such a complete and wonderful guide! I have been to a few areas in Florida, and can not wait to go this February and "try" out a few more of the recommended trips.A friend and I are going to go to Ding Darling Refuge and the Black Island (Lover's Key) trip at the very least. The trip descriptions have me longing for my vacation to get here. Very good maps, and I appreciate the section on places to stay and camp!

5-0 out of 5 stars Keys section very good
Very good advice in the Keys section. Did several of the trips recently. Always "as advertised" in the book.
Worth the $$$.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of trips to keep one busy kayaking South Florida
Nigel Foster has finally turned his excellent writing skills to South Florida.Having kayaked in South Florida for the past 6 years, I have personally done most of the trips described in the book.Mr. Foster'sdescriptions are brief, but his attention to detail, and excellent on-waterguides make the book very useful.Short accounts of the history of someareas (i.e., "The Watson Mystery") enliven the book.It iswritten in the style of a travel guide - a bit unusual for a guide to kayaktouring, but it lends itself to the area. His "Caution" tips,e.g., "Watch out for racoons at your picnic site." arewell-chosen.Trip ratings are very reasoned and appropriate, e.g.,"Paddling the outer coast is committing, with exposure to theGulf...Waves across Whitewater Bay generally produce a short chop...No onelives in this area, and there's no way out of it except at the campingsites...." A concisely written book.Well done! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Guide for Independent Kayakers
This book contains everything that an experienced kayaker needs to know to plan a trip to Alaska's Inside Passage. For those who already know where they want to paddle, the first chapter and apendices still provide great local information and advice on gear, clothing, and techniques that are most appropriate for this area. Anyone who will be paddling in these waters should read these sections of the book not only because they will answer many of the difficult logistical questions but because they will make your trip safer and more enjoyable while helping reduce your impact on the area. For those seeking ideas on where to paddle, the rest of the book offers a wealth of suggested routes without getting so specific that you lose all sense of personal discovery.

As a sea kayak guide based in Gustavus I have paddled most of the northern routes described in Jim Howard's book over the past 20 years and I can report that his descriptions and advice are current and accurate.

Something that really bothers me about some guidebooks I have seen is that they name specific campsites and suggest day-by-day itineraries for a few selected routes; they are like a journal of the author's trip. This approach leads to over-use of a few areas and sites and diminishes the sense of discovery that is one of this wild area's greatest attractions; following one of those guidebooks is more like taking someone else's trip than one's own. Not only that, but many of the best sites along a route are (thankfully) NOT named in those guidebooks, so kayakers can have a better trip by ignoring those authors' detailed suggestions.

Jim Howard took a different approach. His routes cover most of the region and for each he gives a description of the area and an assessment of the difficulty of the trip. He names the hazards and gives helpful logistical advice and a general description of the route. This is just what I look for when visiting a new area. I want to know whether I am getting in over my head and how to get to the area. I don't want to know exactly where someone else paddled and camped and what they saw. Finding my own campsites, wildlife viewing areas, and special places is what sea kayaking in a wild place is all about.

Because Southeast Alaska is a wild place with plenty of hazards far from help, it's wise to have solid sea kayaking skills if you are alone or leading less experienced paddlers here. Therefore, this book doesn't cover basic sea kayaking and navigation. Beginners will need to find this information in one of the many other general sea kayaking books and by going with experienced paddlers.

Jim Howard does an excellent job of giving helpful area-specific information while preserving opportunities for wilderness self-discovery. I can tell he's explored the area thoroughly and talked to lots of local folks. Get this book if you're coming here. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars missing critical information
I used this book to plan a trip to Lake Mattamuskeet in January but the author fails to note that the lake is actually closed to kayakers every year until March 1st.Makes me wonder what else is wrong in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Guide to Sea Kayaking in North Carolina
A wonderful timesaver for the kayaker on the Outer Banks. This well organized guide provides concise information of all the day trips in the area including launch directions.I've been on 6 of her trips already and find the information to be accurate and informative.I'd have to spend significant time gathering all this information from the locals myself.A must have book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book! Perfect for OBX Paddlers!
I have been going to the Outer Banks for over 20 years now but am new to kayaking. I was looking for a book about kayaking trips all along the Outer Banks. I found this one and bought it. I read through it and now I have a second copy of it so I can pull the maps out to take on my trips without destroying the original.

Pam Malec knows the area really well and has plotted some excellent trips to take. She also gives some great advice on things to watch out for (bugs in Ocracoke, tidal influences, high boat traffic areas, etc) and places to stay and eat in the area of the trips. The book also gives a few history lessons on the area and other interesting facts (Ever wonder about the origin of the marshmellow? Get this book and find out!)

With her book, I have planned three different trips for my next vacation to the area.

This is a fantastic book and I highly recommend it for anyone planning to kayak along the North Carolina coast.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Regional Paddling Guidebook
If you are acoastal paddler who plans to visit the area near the Outer Banks of North Carolina, you will not want to be without this guide.

Pam Malec has compiled an excellent trip planning guide with over 30 day trip paddle plans. Each listing has a general map of the route and describes the required skill level for the trip, wildlife & landmarks of the area, launching and landing sites, safety issues, navigational aids, and camping, lodging & restaurant options. Each trip description also includes a pageof local lore (including one about an attack swan!) which really adds to the depth of the guide and to each individual trip.

A chapter on the best kayak surfing spots in the area, safety and surf etiquette and appendices listing local events & paddling clubs, recommended reading, paddlesport rental/ instruction/outfitters, National& State Parks, reserves and refuges really make this an excellent and comprehensive regional paddling guide. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reference for Seakayakers
As a kayak instructor, I highly recommend you purchase this book and keep it handy to read and review on a regular basis. It is not only great for beginners but also seasoned paddlers. One of the most overwhelming aspects of this sport is figuring out what gear you really need - especially when you see the price tags in all the "gucci" paddling stores these days.Doug Alderson brings kayaking back to basics by giving you hints on how you can enhance your kayaking kit with things from around the house or the dollar store. His tips are usually so simple they're ingenious.(Did you know that when Doug isn't paddling he's a high school industrial arts teacher?).Moreover, his advice on how to plan a trip, stay safe, and have a hassle free camping experience are by far the best I've seen, a testament to Doug's vast seakaying experience.I use this book as one of my main instructing references since students often ask me questions that are well covered in this book. The more I read it, the more I appreciate how much thought went into each paragraph and illustration.

2-0 out of 5 stars random observations about kayaking
This is a collection of suggestions rather than a systematic discussion, not worth the money or time.

5-0 out of 5 stars confidence and knowledge for even the newest paddlers
I started paddling just 2 months ago and bought this book before my first venture on the water. After reading it I felt like I had a basic idea of the kinds of things that could happen to me and what I could do about them. It contains advice from many experienced paddlers who want to help you avoid their mistakes and have a great time paddling. Being new to the sport I didn't even know what questions to ask - this book covers topics I hadn't even thought about. It gives advice on the best fabric choices in clothes for the weather, what to pack on the boat, what to have waiting for you at the end of your trip (hot cocoa among other things), how to tie some basic knots, how to scare bears away, how to pee without leaving the kayak (valuable information for women - like me). It's interesting, fun to read and not at all didactic. It includes many tips for more experienced paddlers and I will reread it often as I advance in the sport. The tips are offered by paddlers who obviously love their sport and want to share their great time with everyone else.

5-0 out of 5 stars Author review
Seakayaker's Savvy Paddler condenses many years of sea kayak paddling into a concise manual of how to make your paddling, easier, safer, cheaper and more enjoyable. You can read it from the inside out or from cover to cover. Either way, you will find succinct advice and short-snappy TIPS ready to put to good use in a brief paddle around the lake or an extended trip along the open coast. This book will help you do more with less and extend your enjoyment, safety and adventure while exploring in your seakayak. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A solid start that doesn't oversimplify the sport.
Actually, it's two sports -- depending on who you ask.Ford does a great job of acknowledging and exploring the similarities and common concerns of sea and whitewater kayaking. The simple and straightforward advice on instruction and gear selection makes this a great book to read before you ever get in a kayak. It provides you with the knowledge to ask good questions and make reasonable decisions when you go to purchase gear. The book splits later into sea and whitewater sections, so if you are already sold on one and don't want to know about the other, you might shy away from this title -- don't.Expert paddlers agree that all types of paddling have something to teach all types of paddlers.Taking a few minutes to become more familiar with the other side of kayaking will benefit you, and the getting started angle of this book is too good to miss. For the undecided, or for future whitewater paddlers, this is an easy to read overview of strokes, river reading, vocabulary, and other concerns with good photos to help explain major points.Simple advice on rolling, manuvering, playing, and safety will give you plenty of things to learn as you begin to explore the awesome fun of kayaking., ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource
I really liked this book. Not only were there a large number of well-researched trips, but there were lots of extras that made the book a great resource.

The first section of the book is a review of basic kayaking information.Having read this type of information before, I nonetheless found Ms. Evans' text easy to read and helpful.I particularly liked her treatment of hypothermia, one of the main hazards of sea kayaking.

The main section of this book consists of 42 of carefully detailed trips. Each one begins with a overview of important information about tides, local hazards, and NOAA charts. One of the things I liked about the text is that Ms. Evans wasn't afraid to include a few subjective statements such as: "Nauset Marsh is one of the most beautiful places in Massachusetts for paddling serene, unspoiled, and protected water."I found these comments helpful in making trip choices.

In addition to trip details, Ms. Evans includes quite a bit of information about local access, conservation and environmental issues.Information such as why horseshoe crabs are important, why over-development harms local waters (nitrogen overloading causes oxygen depletion), and why the preservation of salt marshes is so important (they give food and shelter to 2/3rds of all commercially valuable fish and shellfish). It makes sense that Ms. Evans knows about these issues since she practices environmental law in Boston.

All in all a valuable resource for Massachusetts paddlers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brings back the memeories!
My brother and I went on an expedition ship along the Antarctic Peninsula last year. We brought back some great images, but 8 days in the area wasn't nearly enough. The images in this book are magic, especially so when you remember everything was carried in and done from 3 kayaks. The typical Kiwi understatement may hide the true passion that must be there to undertake such an unearthly challenge. I can understand the immense effort involved, and also the absolute fascination of this unique environment. So much so, that we're going back next January for a 21 day trip. Can't wait.

Thanks guy's for an un-put-downable read and set of images!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Frozen Coast
Very well written.Read from cover to cover without stopping. A tribute to the vision, research and sheer determination to succeed and overcome awesome conditions at times.Very philosophical in attitude to overcome daunting prevailing circumstances.

3-0 out of 5 stars Chilling Out
One day New Zealander Graham Charles realizes that no one else has kayaked the Artarctic Peninsula, and so he rounds up two similarly experienced Kiwi paddle pals to join him on a 528-mile voyage that is so well-planned it's almost dusty. (The fourth author, Sarah Moodie, is a journalist involved only in the writing end.) The three men write a little about each other and a little more about the trip per se (this is not a text-heavy production), each taking for himself one section of the journey. All in all there's more hard work than drama here, at least partly because their planning (exemplified by an excellent chapter on equipment) precluded the endless death-defying adventures, mishaps and show-off machismo that are all too commonly the stock of books of the into-the-void variety. In short there are some thrills--but no <cheap> thrills. The gang's greatest drama, in fact, comes when they're in someone else's hands, being ferried back to Argentina.

The prose is workmanlike and in all there's a rather muted emotional tone here: The paddlers seem to think the voyage is a bit of all right as a fairly extreme male-bonding experience, but clearly no one's actually obsessed with it. To pump the emotional temperature up a bit, Mme. Moodie is dragooned to staple on some sonorous and high-flown prose about the idealism of adventure: how man must needs go a-questing, a-daring the unknown, and how the race needs people test themselves. Jeez: There's even a Mission Statement! Adding this claptrap to a lot of sudden realizations of man's wee-tiny place in the vast universe occasionally made me long for George Mallory's empty-headed (but brief!) explanation of why he wan ted to climb Everest: "Because it's there."

But then there are the photos. Many of them are so perfectly exposed and beautifully composed that they look like studio shots or Sierra Club posters. They make you wonder who carried the 8X10 view cameras--and who lugged Ansel Adams. I'd like to see these shots three times as big and three times as many. They're perfect for winter dreaming by the fire with your feet up and some wine at your elbow. You can stare at them until you fall right into the frame.--Bill Marsano is an award-winning editor and writer whose own kayaking voyages fill only pages, not books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Antarctic adventure journal with spellbinding photos
The trio of authors are New Zealanders, with Charles the photographer. With the journalist Moodie, they do a journal of their incredible kayak trip around the Antarctic Peninsula jutting out toward South America. Charles's dramatic photos shift back and forth between shots of the kayaking and camping, and the forbidding, rugged, yet entrancing Antarctic landscape. The journal records the hardships and satisfactions on the challenging trip. The section "Equipment" following the text and photos lists the varied gear and supplies needed for the trip--which list in itself testifies to the uniqueness of the physical challenge and the hardships the kayakers had to overcome by careful preparation, ingenuity, and determination.
