From the supplier: Standard methods of teaching physical education (PE) in secondary schools should be modified to accomodate pedagogical strategies aimed at developing students' critical thinking skills. Basically, remodeled lesson plans should help students justify their decision to become physically fit. They should also help students examine their beliefs about PE, apply new PE information to their lives, develop solutions to health risks and develop an interest in various fitness activities.

Book Description
Books that deliver sound advice and encouragement to high schoolcoaches--and written by qualified and experienced people-are rare ornonexistent. Here's one.

We all want to win, and COACHING 101--featuring a foreword by NFL Hall of FamerOtto Graham--shows how. But this "Bible of Basics" is also designed to helpcultivate a more positive learning atmosphere and to enrich staff rapport. Itwill help all coaches become better at what they do.

Coaching has always been hard work. Today, it's staggering. Where can youngcoaches turn for practical and proven guidelines to build solid programs, moldcrucial relationships, and do things "the right way?"

Where can experienced coaches turn for reinforcement of their beliefs about "howit should be done" in high school sports?

College textbooks and methods courses lack practical instruction on how to leadhigh-schoolers through positive athletic experiences.

One good new idea is worth far more than the price of a book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Systematic, But Quite Helpful
Because of the title, I was expecting a more methodical treatment of coaching: job descriptions, basic expectations, evaluations, etc.But what it lacked in organization, the author made up for in his "homespun" wisdom.He obviously has a lot of insights into coaching from years of experience.Using broad brush strokes about strategy, motivation, relationships, and philosophy, I think the author captures the heart of coaching.Excellent book for coaches with various years of experience.I would've rated the book five stars if he was more methodical. ... Editorial Review

Book Description
Teaching Team Sports isn't just another sport skills book. It's a how-to manual that shows teachers how to analyze and present sport skills by breaking them down into fundamental body movements. Once students master the fundamental movement skills--such as running, jumping, and throwing--they can use those skills to perform all sports.

This text also presents complete information on how to effectively teach seven team sports in coeducational settings.

Teaching Team Sports helps methods class instructors

* organize course material,

* develop a curriculum,

* plan teaching sequences, and

* learn to analyze sport skills.

Teaching Team Sports is also a valuable reference for secondary physical educators in middle and high school settings and for recreation leaders. It will help them

* understand basic movement patterns,

* organize groups into learning units,

* include all students or group members in the learning experience,

* avoid discipline problems caused by disorganized practice time,

* develop teaching strategies to maximize participation, and

* meet the special demands of teaching coeducational classes.

The text is divided into two parts. The first part explains coed sports along with the principles of movement and observation to help teachers more skillfully recognize movement variations and give positive feedback to improve their player's movement patterns. You'll also learn about fundamental movement skills and how some are related to others. Similarities and differences between the movement skills are outlined so teachers can plan effective learning experiences.

Part Two addresses specific sports: basketball, field hockey, flag/touch football, soccer, softball, speedball, and volleyball. Each chapter contains

* a brief history of the sport,

* purpose and values of the sport,

* a description and basic rules,

* suggestions for playing the sport coeducationally,

* a teaching progression,

* a description of techniques,

* practice activities,

* offensive and defensive strategies,

* common errors and corrections,

* terminology, and

* selected readings.

You'll find 185 drawings showing correct performance techniques and team formations as well as error and correction charts for the sports' skills. You'll also find numerous coeducational drills to help you practice each skill and plan more effective classes. Use them daily in your practice sessions to develop progressive skill patterns and build team effort.

No one knows the importance of team sports better than Joan Philipp (veteran schoolteacher) and Jerry Wilkerson (specialist on sport technique and fundamental movement). Their combined years of experience and knowledge make Teaching Team Sports the most comprehensive text available for teaching coed classes.

Whether you're teaching beginning or intermediate skills or coaching young players, you need Teaching Team Sports--a fresh approach for today's physical education classes. ... Read more

Book Description
Do your high school students get excited when it's time for physical education class? Do they cooperate … participate … perform with little direction? You can stop laughing, because now there's help for you to develop individualized physical education programs so motivating, every student will get hooked on exercise—even the couch potatoes.

In Learning by Choice in Secondary Physical Education: Creating a Goal-Directed Program, Kevin Kaardal describes an innovative, step-by-step program that he developed and perfected while teaching physical education for many years at the middle and high school levels. Teachers love it because it reduces downtime, increases involvement, and makes teaching more enjoyable. Kids love it, too—90 percent of those surveyed anonymously gave it their overwhelming approval.

Imagine classes where students select their activities, organize themselves, plan personal objectives, follow through, and stay on course—with little direction from the teacher. The author shows you how "facilitating" rather than "teaching" classes will help you achieve better results. Your job will be easier and students will learn important lessons in goal setting and responsibility. In this practitioner's guide, you'll also find valuable information on building individualized programs that ensure students learn appropriate skills, progress at their own rate—and succeed.

Part One explains in simple terms how the program works, and details curriculum, teaching, and assessment techniques.Part Two provides the materials to develop your own program, including ready-to-use units that contain master curriculum sheets, contracts or student progress record sheets, student planning sheets, suggested modified games, and assessment tools.

The book also features the following items:

· A complete set of 84 reproducibles for creating and running a basketball unit, including 54 task card posters

· 19 reproducibles for soccer, including 16 task card posters

· 14 reproducible general planning and assessment forms

· 36 reproducibles for six other sports

· How-tos for creating a complete curriculum for any sport, including unit overviews, handouts, task card posters, and assessment forms

This book should be in the library of every physical education teacher—whether you're just starting out or you're experienced and feeling a little frustrated and burned out. It's a wellspring of sure-fire ideas and techniques to make physical education so fun and rewarding for students, they'll enjoy exercise for the rest of their lives. ... Read more
