Excerpt: The Cowal Highland Gathering is an annual Highland games event held in the Scottish town of Dunoon, Argyll, over the final weekend in August. Also known as the Cowal Games, it is the largest Highland Gathering in the world. The first Cowal Games was held in Dunoon in 1894, and attracted fewer than 2,000 spectators. By 1901, attendances reached 5,000, and the first overseas competitor, an American athlete, took part. 1906 saw the introduction of a pipe band competition. In 1929, the first approaches from Scottish societies overseas were received, and this has continued as exiles the world over have turned to Dunoon for advice and practical assistance in setting up their own Gatherings. Pipe bands filing into the stadium for the salute to the chieftain and the award announcements. After a break during the years of World War II, the first post-war Gathering, in 1946, attracted attendances of 28,000. However, the record attendance, to date at least, was in 1950 when 30,000 visitors attended,. one of whom was then-Prime Minister Clement Attlee. In 2000, changes to the Highland dancing format resulted in the Friday becoming a high-profile day, with the top dancers out to qualify for Saturday's finals. The Solo Bagpipe competition introduced a graded system. Shinty was reintroduced, attracting high-calibre competitions. 2003 saw Cowal extended to a three-day event with the introduction of the Scottish National Highland Dancing Championships and the five-kilometre Cowal ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=8757487 ... Excerpt: Shinty (Scottish Gaelic: ) is a team sport played with sticks and a ball. Shinty is now played mainly in the Highlands of Scotland, and amongst Highland migrants to the big cities of Scotland, but it was formerly more widespread, being once competitively played on a widespread basis in England and other areas in the world where Scottish Highlanders migrated. Whilst comparisons are often made with field hockey, the two sports have several important differences. In shinty, a player is allowed to play the ball in the air and is allowed to use both sides of the stick. The stick may also be used to block and to tackle, although a player may not come down on an opponent's stick, a practice called hacking. A player may tackle using the body as long as this is shoulder-to-shoulder as in football. The sport was derived from the same root as the Irish game of hurling but has developed different rules and features. These rules are governed by the Camanachd Association. Shinty is also one of the forebears o...http://booksllc.net/?id=73107 ... Read more

For much of the 20th century the name became Rhum, a spelling invented by the former owner, Sir George Bullough, because he did not relish the idea of having the title "Laird of Rum". Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Sale Sharks are a professional rugby union club who play in England in the Guinness Premiership. The club is an offshoot of Sale F.C., which is based in Sale, Greater Manchester, but Sharks currently play in Stockport at Edgeley Park, ground sharing with Stockport County F.C. Part of the process of creating a rugby union team to represent the North West region has been in the development of a strong academy. Through their junior team The Jets (presumably named to go alongside The Sharks as a reference to West Side Story) , the club has developed many talented home-grown players, including; Steve Hanley, Mark Cueto, Dean Schofield, Chris Jones, Andy Titterrell and Charlie Hodgson as well as taking on Jason Robinson when he converted codes after leaving Wigan Rugby League Club. After the success of the 2005/06 season many at the club had hoped for a repeat and with a strong squad boosted by several quality players including England Saxons centre Chris Bell, Former Wales prop Ben Evans and Argentina flanker Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe it seemed likely. However over the autumn months an injury crisis began with the loss of Scotland capain Jason White to a knee injury whilst playing against Romania. More bad news followed with England fly half Charlie Hodgson and England prop Andrew Sheridan falling to knee and ankle injuries respectively. More and more injuries were picked up over the following months until Sale were left with only 17 of a 38 man squad fit to play in their final Heineken cup match against the Ospreys. (Source: Sale sharks website) In 2007-8, it was World Cup year so the club was without some of out big name...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=21392239 ... Read more

Excerpt: Inverness Shinty Club is a shinty club from Inverness, Scotland. The first team competes in North Division One and the second team in North Division Three. Founded in 1887 as Inverness Town and County Shinty Club to distinguish from other clubs in Inverness such as Clachnacuddin, Inverness moved to the Bught Park in 1934. Inverness won the Camanachd Cup in 1952. The club struggles to compete for players with the wide proliferation of football clubs in Inverness, in particular Inverness Caledonian Thistle but still manages to put out two teams. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Premier Division is a league for shinty teams. It is the primary league competition in shinty and top tier of the Shinty league system. The Premier Division was formed in 1996 in order to create a Scotland-wide league set-up for the first time. It is one of the five trophies considered to be part of the Grand Slam in the sport of shinty. As of 2009, the league is known for sponsorship reasons as the Scottish Hydro Electric Premier Division, although it is sometimes referred to as the Scottish Hydro Premier League. In 2010, the following teams will make up the Premier Division. Previously, the winners of North Division One and South Division One would play off in a National Final. The league was initially played through the winter but with the change of the shinty season to summer in 2004, the Premier Division followed suit. In the transition between the two seasons, there was an interim season played, Kingussie were champions. ... Read more

Excerpt:Alain Baxter (born December 26, 1973) is a professional skier from Scotland . He specialises in the slalom discipline. Background He is the son of Iain and Sue Baxter, who were both British Ski Team members, and was born in Edinburgh . He is named after the 70s French skiing star Alain Penz. At 16 years of age, he was selected to the British Alpine Ski Team in 1991, and he steadily worked his way through the world rankings, making the top 100 in time for the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics. Salt Lake City Olympics In the Salt Lake City Olympics of 2002 , Baxter made British Olympic history by becoming the first Briton to win a medal (Bronze) in alpine skiing. He sparked controversy at the time, by dying his hair with the Saltire cross of St Andrew : the flag of Scotland . The British Olympic Association ordered him to remove this symbol of his nationality, because they wanted to project an image of "Britishness ", but the blue dye he used to try to obliterate the white saltire was a different shade, and the saltire pattern could still clearly be seen when he won his medal. Alain returned home to Aviemore to a hero's welcome and a parade around the town in an open top bus. Medal controversy A few days after his return home, Alain discovered that he had failed a drug test. His sample contained a trace amount of methamphetamine - albeit the inactive levorotary isomer of methamphetamine - levomethamphetamine (aka levMethamphetamine), an isomer with no significant stimulant properties. After an appeal, the IOC declared that Baxter was disqualifie... ... Read more
