this book is a beautiful book. Gary Benson captures the beauty of Show Jumping, Dressage, and Endurance riding. This is a must for any horse lover! He also gives usefull information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Handsome coffee-table picture book
This is a beautiful book. The author is a photographer, and it consists almost entirely of large photos from competitions all over the United States. What is most unusual about the photos is that many of them are of ordinary riders, not just the frequently photographed superstars, and that his work frequently includes the rider within the entire setting - so rather than just a horse and rider, you get some context, both for the scene and for what competing is all about. ... Book Description
Here is a beautiful coffee-table book celebrating the sport of competitive show jumping.

A show jumping arena is a a place of color, atmosphere, and spectacle, where competition between the world's top horse and rider partnerships is tough and only the very best reap the rewards. Elizabeth Furth has selected a dramatic collection of images that reflect the mood, the athleticism, and the ceremony in show jumping today, with a unique look at the often-neglected subject of course design.

Featuring a wealth of action photography from every internation show ground that has hosted championship and Olympic events, VISIONS OF SHOW JUMPING captures the sport from every angle, from preparation to presentation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely book capturing the essence of show jumping
Big, excellent quality photographs capture the spirit and beauty of showjumping. I also enjoyed what Elithabeth Furth, the photographer, had to say about them, as well as the comments from the top notch riders pictured.Contrary to what you might imagine, it is a very interesting book, not onlyto look at, but also to read. I find it a very motivating and inspiringbook, I am in love with show jumping, and its wonderful to see the emotionof the sports captured so well (not an easy task!), and to know the rider'sfeelings towards the moments, the competitions, their horses. As ElithabethFurth puts it: photographs capture spectacular moments of competition andimmortalize them on film. ... Read more

Product Description
Everyone is looking for that somewhat elusive special mount that will bring them fame and fortune in the Grand Prix ring . . . a horse for Sunday afternoon , a horse that can be found at the bargain rate of $1500 or more than $1 million. Following the US national horse show and Grand Prix jumping circuit, Vicky Moon starts in Palm Beach with the Wellington Winter Equestrian Festival, moves on to America’s oldest shows in Upperville, Virginia, and Devon, Pennsylvania, then to the Indio Circuit in California, to Long Island for the classy Hampton Classic, down to the prestigious Washington Horse Show, and finishing at the National Horse Show. Just like "Best in Show," you’ll meet the riders, trainers, owners, judges, and the personalities such as "The Carrot Man," "The Masseuse," and the other fascinating characters who follow the horse show circuit. Big names and big money are all part of this intriguing world. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars sure could've used a red pen
A Sunday Horse suffers from a lack of editing. The first chapter is terrible and the second is boring. Vicky Moon is a charming writer but somebody should've convinced her to either cut these two chapters or combine them into one. The book doesn't get fun until chapter three when she tells the story of a bizarre horse kidnapping. After that the book takes off with stories of grooms, writers, vets, carrot sellers, braiders, riders, and all the people who make the grand prix circuit run. One thing I really liked about the book is how Moon makes it clear that a person may not be a great rider and may never win the big shows but with talent, detrmination and flexibility they can still have a career that keeps them "in" horses.

I almost gave up during the first chapter but decided to keep reading because hey, I'd already spent my money, and I'm glad I kept going. Hopefully Vicky Moon will come out with a new edition that is packaged better..

4-0 out of 5 stars A Sunday Rider
The book gave a lot of inside information on riders and owners and would be good for someone just getting involved in showing because it gave data on average prices, etc.Good insight into the showjumping world.

4-0 out of 5 stars Finally a good book on an often overlooked sport which
Finally a good book on an often overlooked sports which deserves to be written about with the care that Vicky Moon has provided in these pages. The book has covered not just the riders and the trainers, but the grooms who work so hard. I loved the stories about the carrot man. It brings together the glamor, the glitz and yes, also the darker side. The first book to really tell it like it really is.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not many horses, Sunday or otherwise...
For a book entitled "The Sunday Horse", one would expect it to have at least SOME horses discussed in the text; "The Sunday Horse OWNER" would really be a more apropos title for this lightweight tome. When I picked this book up, I was hoping that it would follow one particular rider or trainer or barn for their entire Grand Prix campaign. How interesting this could have been, getting to know one or two people in depth, learning about the horses they work with, the strengths & weaknesses, caring about their wins, losses, injuries...instead, I found 200 pages of 3 paragraph profiles of people who are either super-rich, or super-marginal.

The author, Vicky Moon, lists "People" magazine amongst her credits. It shows. Her writing is very much in "People"'s style, being rather breathless puff-pieces that spend considerable time dwelling on the "Lifestyles of the Rich & Horsey" aspects of her subjects. At each horse show covered in her book, the list of local socials & celebrities attending is given more attention than the International caliber horses competing!

Each chapter of this book covers one particular horse show & it's habitues, from the chairperson through the lady running a sweater shop. She opens at "Welly World" (Wellington FL, near Palm Beach) & closes at the Washington DC horse show. You may find out about the guy who directs traffic for the event, but you definitely won't know much about the Grand Prix competition itself!

As a long-time horsey person who has always dreamed of competing at Grand Prix level, I found one aspect of her book continually frustrating: she does not identify the horses in her photographs! You'll see pictures of great riders past (Rodney Jenkins, Anthony d'Ambrosio) & present (Marjorie Goldstein-Engle) but if you want to know the name of their mount, you won't find it either in either the text or the photo caption. With all the discussion of multi-million dollar equine talent in the book, one would think the horses would get an acknowledgement too; after all, these are HORSE shows, not RIDER shows!

Another annoying lack is one of either index or sources. Ms. Moon must have consulted literature other than show press releases; why not list them? Why make a reader page through the book looking for a mention of their particular favorites, when an index could make it so easy?

Typos, mis-spellings, and confusing sentences abound as well; this is a book in need of a good proof-reader!

If the only thing you know about Grand Prix show jumping is having seen it once or twice on television, you may enjoy "The Sunday Horse". If, however, you are a horse-lover who has stood at the In-Gate yourself, you won't find much here that you couldn't read in a People magazine article. What a shame.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful, Fun Look at the World of Horses
Vicky Moon brings out her stinging but fun writing style again in "A Sunday Horse," a behind-the-scenes look at the world of the Grand Prix Circuit. With the Olympics coming up, this book was an especially interesting read, and I look forward to watching the Olympic Equestrian events with Vicky Moon's book next to me.Her writing style combines the humor of "Best in Show" with a genuine love and appreciation of horses and the horse world. ... Young equestrians dream of galloping toward a fence on their favorite horse and sailing over it in one long, smooth leap. Jumping is one of the most thrilling things a young rider can accomplish on horseback and the ultimate goal of countless horse-crazy kids.

Lesley Ward, editor of Young Rider magazine, interacts with young people and horses every day. She has witnessed the youngsters' enthusiasm for jumping, their courage in the saddle, and their thirst for more knowledge and reliable advice. Responding to hundreds of readers' letters asking for help with jumping problems, Ward covers all the fundamentals of jumping safely and correctly in Jumping for Kids, a guide for children eight and older. Full-color photographs, line illustrations, jumping diagrams, charts, informative sidebars, and a calm, encouraging voice fully engage the child every step of the way — from building strength and confidence riding on the flat to jumping at a show.

5-0 out of 5 stars 101 Jumping Exercises
The best how to book on ground poles and jumping that I have experienced. It's a great tool by an expert to keep your horses (young and old) interested as well as the rider thinking. Linda laid out the book very well. Good illustrations and great explanations accompany each exercise. The ground pole exercises are very helpful to use between jumping lessons. This one is a book to keep and give as a gift to a riding friend!

5-0 out of 5 stars great jumping ideas
This book has so much info on different exercises and each exercises has little hits about when to use this exercise and what to watch out for while riding it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Evolution of jumping skills.
This book breaks the demands or jumping down into a logical progression of skills until it takes the insecure beginning rider into a confident partner to the jumping horse. If these lessons are followed correctly, it can also take a training level horse into a skilled show jumper. This book is a must for anyone interested int he discipline of jumping.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Jumping book for beginners
This book creates a great foundation to train yourself and your horse to excell in jumping no matter what your intentions may be. I personally would recomend this book for all ages and engligh riders even the one's with no intention on jumping.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book To Keep In Your Tack Room!

I have been doing these exercises with him, and it really worked! He is now on his way to being a confident jumper. It was pretty easy, too. We set up the cavaletti and cross-rail grids, and followed the patterns described. I am now proud to say I have a hunter in training. This book is highly reccomended to everyone; whether your horse is a confident jumper, or just learning, 101 Jumping Exercises For Horse And Rider isa great source to jumping exercises! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The de Nemethy Method
Bertalan de Nemethy was coach of the US Equestrian Show Jumping Team for 25 years. His approaches work. This book is an invaluable guide for anyone who wants to know how to start a horse in jumping training and get good results. But it is far more than that.In less than 170 pages de Nemethy explains how to sit a horse correctly - and why - how to work the horse in the various gaits, how to start a young horse so that he will be supple and balanced, how to do ground work, and how to start and work successfully with a young or a more experienced horse over jumps. Many more pages have been written on all of these subjects, but de Nemethy manages to say it all clearly and briefly. The key to ones success in using this book is that it contains numerous wonderful photographs as well as diagrams and exact information on what exercises to use, what distances and heights to work with, and how the horse is likely to react to each phase of the schooling.Every element in the experience of the horse and rider is detailed and explained. It is a shame, for both riders and horses, that this book is not available at a reasonable price; in the last month I have advised three people to buy it, and I can think of several more whom I would give it to, if the base price were not upwards of $300!Thank goodness I had the sense to buy it when I did!

5-0 out of 5 stars This provides a wonderful method for riding and jumping.
If you want to do it right and classically, de Nemethy's methods are the way to go.Try to get your hands on this book - it helps you correctly teach the horse to jump and sets him up for success.

De Nemethy emphasizes the basics and has a systematic approach to training the horse to jump reliably and confidently. The book is not complex and not filled with lots of esoteric stuff. It is clear, practical and sound.Do it right so you won't have to do it over ... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Magnificent Book
A Magnificent Book that has everything going for it.
In & Out: Year One in the Jumping for Gold Series by Barbara Moss
is a knowledgable and exciting look at the world of show jumping,
but also is about honor and growth.

3-0 out of 5 stars entertaining, for horse people
I agree with the reviewer who said the redeeming value of the book is the depiction of the horses and the horse world, and also agree that even that is stereotypical. The main character has to be one of the most one-dimensional, obnoxious protagonatists I've come across in a long time, or ever! The writing is really bad.So why do I give it 3 stars?Somehow the writer pulls it off. She's a great story teller, who knows exactly where to put the twists and turns in the plot to keep you going just when you think you've had enough of angry Jericho and really bad prose.Kudos to Barbara Moss for that. And, amazingly, I've decided I'll buy her next book. But she's no Jilly Cooper, and this is not Riders (which is not exactly great literatute either but still the best of the genre).

5-0 out of 5 stars Mercedes Raye
This is one of my favorite books. Yes it certainly is an adults book but it has a great story line. I only hope that Barbara Moss write a sequel. Great book!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars In and Out
This is a wonderful book esp. if you are a educated jumper rider. I can't even put it down and have recommended it to many of my other horse friends. The story line and details are right on... it sounds like it is written by someone who has "been there and done that" in Wellington and on the nitty gritty jumper circuit as well as climbing to the top in the horse competition world.I can't wait for another book written by Barbara Moss regarding any story line on the competitive horse world with its background in Wellington and Europe.

3-0 out of 5 stars Loved the horsey talk, hated the characters
Jerico Brandeis is a Grand Prix level rider who has set his sights on quaifying for the Olympic team and running his training/showing business. He is a cocky, and arrogant personality who has loads of psychoanalyisis to get through. He also has some serious difficulties with women and definitely waffles between viewing them as objects to falling desperately head over heals in love with them. While I agree that this is very stereotypical of trainers in this industry, that's just it... it's a stereotype.
Of course such a self involved individual needs a roommate; welcome Starbucks; this is a character that I think is supposed to be a foil/comedic relief for the story.I hate this guy; he is a former Starbucks employee/ photographer who has the brain of a pea and the looks of a male model.Come on!
Now we get to the conflict.Much of the drama in this book arises from him crossing over professional lines; as in having an affair with his main patron's wife, oh, and getting caught at it, then doing it again and getting her pregnant when the spouse is STERILE (DUH!).This book was pure soap opera drama in the human relations department with a little porn thrown in for flavoring.
The only redeeming value in this book is the depiction of the horses, the jumping and the actual mechanics of the show jumping industry (which was still a bit stereotypical) In terms of the descriptions of the riding and show jumping component, I felt that the book did a good job in giving us a glimpse into that world.Jericho's career was sped up a bit for the sake of the plot line, but you do get a good idea of how hard it is to make it in that world.

So this book would be fine if you are going to do a horseless horse project for 4h or something like that, but if you are interested in trying to determine a carrier path for your western prospects like I was, don't waste your money.I was hoping they would talk about what qualities it takes to compete so I could figure out if my colts would fit that market, not just what they do at shows.
