Product Description

This colorful and lively story centers on preparing a sled-dog team ready for a race. Children count paws, ears, and noses as the dogs eagerly await the starting gun. A sled-dog glossary and more help little ones learn mushing terminology, the parts of the rigging, and sled-dog facts. The cheerful text is excellent for reading aloud and makes for a wonderful way to get children excited about counting. Michael Bania's charming illustrations exude the happy canine enthusiasm for which Alaskan Huskies are known.

5-0 out of 5 stars the winter of the three dogs
The Three Dogs were big and muscular, there was Bruno, Kalia but that they look and sound cool. The book gets more better towards the end when the three dogs won the sledding contest at Colorada. Kalia is a husky, which is a type of a wolf. Bruno looks like a black lab mixed with husky. I wish I could have these dogs from The Three Dog Winter. This is a good book.I will rate it a five.

For decades, Attla, the ""Huslia Hustler,"" reined as Alaska's most winning sprint champion, having overcome crippling TB as a child. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Legend in Mid-Life
George Attla was no more than a name to me before I picked up SPIRIT IN THE WIND: THE STORY OF GEORGE ATTLA.The cover said he was Alaska's legendary sled dog sprint champ.Whuh?I scoffed, thinking "legendary" was a word that is overused nowadays and should be reserved for people like Helen of Troy or George Washington. However, one quick peek through the contents of this book made me think that for once, Lew Freedman is not overstating things, for George Attla has indeed all the attributes of a legendary figure.Did you ever read Joseph Campbell's HERO OF A THOUSAND FACES?That will come to mind when you sit down with a hot cup of cocoa and a copy of SPIRIT OF THE WIND.For Attla is to ordinary mushers what Margot Fonteyn is to ballerinas--the gold standard to which all others have to kneel down.

He is good with dogs, and Freedman spends a lot of time detailing the extraordinary bonds set up by a trainer like Attla with some very special beasts.Freedman ascribes some of his magic to his First Peoples ancestry, for he is an Alaskan Indian with a kind of "horse whispering" background and a crippling childhood disease, one that would bring tears to your eyes, and when he conquers it the Northern Lights seem to glow a little brighter. You'll be wiping away the tears with a chamois.

He has achieved too many feats to mention, and nine gold medals. When he left school, it was with a first grade education--no, I guess he made it into second grade. At the end of our lives when we approach the Pearly Gates, St Peter will ask us what we did for other people while we were alive, and George Attla will shake his noble head and say, "I did it for the dogs."

1-0 out of 5 stars A legendary man, but a trivial book
Without a doubt one of the most poorly written books that I have every read. The author normally writes newspaper articles and it's obvious. Each chapter is written like a short article off the main page which results in a shallow read. There is no transition between chapters and much of the information in one chapter is repeated in subsequent chapters. It takes talent to make such a fascinating life such an incredible bore.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and "friendly" biography of a great Alaskan
This biography on George Attla proves to be interesting and well written. The book tells the story of this great Alaskan musher in an easy to read and entertaining prose.

However, as information goes, the book suffered because while the author tells us so much about Attla's accomplishments, the book doesn't go into the man itself. Its a very friendly biography written by the author who does his best not to paint any negative aspects of George Attla. A good example would the short time Mr. Attla spent in jail up in Fairbanks for reason Mr. Freedman should have known but did not go into.

Biography is a two edge sword. If you are going to write about a man, his greatness and his flaws must be presented. So far, the author seem to be high with praises only. How will we supposed to know who George Attla is without his weaknesses as well. Because of this, I can only considered this book as "half biography" of George Attla, entertaining reading but pretty lightweight material.

5-0 out of 5 stars The inspiring biography of an unusual man
It was 1958 when a twenty-four-year-old George Attla limped to the staring line of the Fur Rendezvous World Championships sled dog race in Anchorage, Alaska with a team of dogs borrowed from family and friends in his hometown of Huslia, Alaska. Three days later he won with a record-setting victory -- the first of many championships won by the man who would become the greatest spring dog "musher" of all time. An athabascan Indian from a tiny Koyukuk River village, Attla was diagnosed with crippling bone tuberculosis as a child, a disability that resulted in a permanently fused knee. Unable to work with his father on the family trap line (as Attla boys were expected to do), George began work training the family pups as a young boy. The dogs became his life, and "mushing" his life's work. Spirit Of The Wind: The Story Of Alaska's George Attla, Legendary Sled Dog Spring Champ is the inspiring biography of an unusual man who overcame all manner of obstacles and impediments to fulfill his life's dream, and in doing so, became a true and authentic champion! ... In this redesigned edition of Scott O'Dell's classic novel, a young Eskimo girl encounters frightening obstacles when she takes her father's place in the Iditarod, the annual 1,172-mile dogsled race in Alaska.
Amazon.com Review
Most young girls' experiences never involve hunting beardedseals on the ice, even within the Alaskan Eskimo culture. In ScottO'Dell's gripping novel, Bright Dawn is an exception. In her father'seyes, she became his son's replacement ever since her brotherdrowned. When Bright Dawn is 18 years old, her father, recentlyinjured, insists that she take his place in the Iditarod, the famousAlaskan dogsled race covering more than a thousand miles betweenAnchorage and Nome. Unflinching, yet trembling in her mukluks, shefaces her challenge head-on.

Bright Dawn proves herself to be astrong, courageous heroine--crossing rivers, mountain ranges, and vaststretches of frozen tundra--with her team of dogs, including the leadBlack Star. While the rush of wind and relentless, blinding stretchesof ice are exhilarating, the dangers involved make Bright Dawn realizethat it's not only the race, but her life that she's entrusting to herteam of dogs. O'Dell, author of the Newbery Award-winning Island of the BlueDolphins, has created an intense, suspenseful, clearly writtenadventure story that's sure to capture the imagination of youngreaders and take them for a blustery ride. 4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Dog Sledding Adventure
I picked this up from the freebie shelf in the library.I must confess I was attracted to the cover.I love reading about women and their dogs.If there was an adult novel out there along these lines, I would pick it up.Nevertheless, this was a decent read and I learned a lot about the Iditarod race and dog sledding in general in the hour it took me to read it.

The novel is about Bright Dawn, a young Eskimo woman who has just graduated high school. The year I am uncertain of.Her dad has plans to race the famous Iditarod but hurts himself just weeks before the race.Bright Dawn takes over. She spends days racing with her favorite dog, Black Star in the lead. There are tons of problems, ranging from moose chasing them, blizzards, white outs, injured dogs, and floating pieces of ice.

Bright Dawn may not win the race, but she is in for a some life lessons and experiences she will never forget.Four stars because of the lack of emotion on the heroine's part.Book never gets "into" her head. Also, the character, Oteg was a bit annoying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scott O'Dell books
Wonderful author for children.I found his books helping Hispanic children, esp. girls to become excited about books.I also think he helps young girls see the power within themselves through his female charactrers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bright Dawn, Black Star *****
The best book ever! Scott O'Dell really can take you on avenue and make you feel like you are the in the cold and winds up to 50 miles an hour. Scott O'Dell can really write a truly amzing book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scott O'Dell Novel

Scott O'Dell's novel, Black Star, Bright Dawn, arrived quickly and in excellent condition. The book is about the Alaskan Iditarod and is exciting and fast-paced.Anyone interested in survival stories will enjoy this novel.

1-0 out of 5 stars A traditional Eskimo girl runs the Iditarod
The father of the Bright Dawn, the heroine of this story, is stranded on an ice floe while seal hunting. The sea becomes a terror to him, and they move from the Alaskan coast. He is asked to represent their new village in the Iditarod, and trains for it until an accident prevents his racing. Then Bright Dawn takes his place, with Black Star, her favorite dog, as her leader. No one from their town had ever finished the race.Bright Dawn runs into many hardships and dangers, but races well. She was the first to enter Iditarod, and also wins an award for taking care of other racers in trouble, even though it slowed her down. When she and her dogs are stranded on an ice floe, her father comes to the rescue. She finishes the race, becoming the first one from her village to do so.

Bright Star and her family are traditional Eskimos. There is plenty of Eskimo mythology and superstition throughout the book; Bright Dawn is portrayed as being true to her people when she relinquishes her skepticism (created by English influences) and decides to trust the old Eskimo gods, traditions, and talismans.

I thought the book was not one of O'Dell's better works.I was disappointed in the way he presented the Eskimos' beliefs, although I admire the way he portrayed their resourcefulness.I also thought the storyline was rather boring. ... Read more

Over beer and hamburgers at the Two Rivers Lodge near Fairbanks, Alaska, a small group of mushers conceived a gutsy idea for a new sled dog race that would be more challenging than any other marathon race in the Far North. In 1984, mushers organized the Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race between Fairbanks and Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. Soon, mushers adopted an unofficial race motto, 'Survive first, race second.'The Quest trail boasts fewer checkpoints, longer wilderness runs, and more campouts. The trail crosses three mountain passes, including the dreaded 3,685-foot Eagle Summit, a killer of mushers' dreams. Outdoor survival skills and self-reliance are on a par with commercial sponsorships and high-tech sleds and mushing gear.YUKON QUEST is an exciting, inspirational story full of bigger-than-life characters told by Lew Freedman, best-selling author of eight books about sled-dog racing. ... In this series for younger boys and girls, each book features cartoon-style illustrations superimposed on vivid full-color photos that show different people in different cultures using different means of travel. The cartoons complementing each photo depict kids with their parents. Each parent is a vehicle driver of one kind or another—but the vehicle type depends entirely on where the story takes place! For instance, Maria is a little girl whose mother is a taxi driver in bustling New York City. Other kids and their parents live in Alaska, and travel by dog sled . . . or in a tropical rain forest, where touring visitors are taken on a safari . . . or in the bush country of Australia's Outback, where the most common way for people to go places is to fly around in light aircraft. The photos on every page capture the contrasting scenic backgrounds and highly individual atmospheres of each book's place. Meanwhile, boys and girls will identify with the cartoon illustrations of kids and parents, as they learn a little bit about how people live and travel in different places. Early-grade teachers will value these wonderfully illustrated books as fine introductions to social studies. ... Read more

Product Description
Polly Evans had a mission: to learn everything possible about the howling, tail-wagging world of sled dogs. Fool’s errand? Or the adventure of a lifetime? The intrepid world traveler was about to find out.

In the dead of winter, Polly Evans ventured to Canada’s far northwest, where temperatures plunge to minus forty and the sun rises for just a few hours each day. But though she was prepared for the cold, she never anticipated how profoundly she’d be affected by that blissful and austere place. In a pristine landscape patrolled by wolves and caribou, the wannabe musher was soon learning the ropes of arctic dogsledding, careening across the silent tundra with her own team of yapping, leaping canines.

Shivering but undaunted, Polly follows the tracks of the legendary Yukon Quest, a dogsledding race more arduous than the Iditarod, witnessing a life-and-death spectacle she’ll never forget. Along the way she makes a stop at the Santa Clause house in North Pole, Alaska (where the post office delivers unstamped mail), and witnesses the astonishing northern lights weaving green and red across the sky. And before the snows melt in spring, Polly will have discovered a deep affection for the loving, mischievous huskies whose courage and enthusiasm escort her through the delights and dangers of living life at the extreme—in one of the most forbidding places on earth. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Kinda of boring...
Polly Evans ventured to Canada, and some parts of Alaska, prepared to learn about dog sledding. Not only does she learn about dog sledding, but she even helps in the legendary Yukon Quest. The cold, the dogs, the snow, all things she had to learn to deal with, one day at a time.
Not really very interesting. She seems as helpless as ever, which is kind of sad.For example, in Fairbanks she can't even find a piece of fruit and a bag of tea.Yet she was at the Westmark Hotel in Fairbanks. The Westmark Hotel has one of those tourist shops. They have bananas! And I am sure they have a pile of tea of all kinds.I know, I was there in MAY!Saying Fairbanks did not have a grocery store is like saying that the ocean does not have sharks because none of them attacked you the last time you took a dip.
But besides insulting the State of Alaska, and talking a lot about dog poop and complaining about how cold she was, the book is a tad boring.True, she does add a lot of the history but that could have been found in any history books of the cold, icy north. In the end, it feels like she was tired and didn't really wish to write this book.Just not as interesting as her book on China.Maybe being a useless tourist is only funny the first time?I hope her book on Spain is better.
Oh, and I have no problem with her getting mad at the people who run the borders - I have problems with them too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and Funny
The title of Polly Evans's book is, of course, a twist on the Noel Coward song "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" (they "go out in the midday sun").In Polly's memoire, mad dogs and an English WOMAN go out in the midNIGHT sun.

And the Northern Lights, and endless snowfields and forests, and iced roads and thawing rivers, and weird and wonderful people and DOGS, all of which she describes with grace and generosity and, occasionally, outright eloquence, in just those spots where it's called for.

Generally, when I review a non-fiction book, I address things like bibliographies, indices, and charts. This personal memoire doesn't call for them, but it does need a better map of the area. The tracing of the Quest dogsled race route gives no idea how the author got from point to point on it by road: we need roads to follow the routes vehicles took and trailmaps to follow the snowmobiles, and there are many features she cites that are not located.

But her story is terribly trenchant.I was born in England and raised in Montreal, and experienced the kind of culture (or climate) shock Canada presents to the unititiated;in Evans's book, you can experience it too.

After having just read Gary Paulsen's book Winterdance, I was anxious to learn more about the iditarod race and this book answered every question I could have dreamed up and more including history of mushing and the race, how mushers and dogs prepare for the race, what kind of equiptment they carry, and descriptions of the trail itself. It also has a very large bibliography which gave me a list of other books I would like to read.

It's Baby's last chance with foster parents before she's shipped off to a juvenile detention center.

Baby may believe that meeting Bobby is the best thing that ever happened to her.But it happens when Baby's finally at a wonderful place in her life, and Bobby starts to take her away from it all.

Under Bobby's influence, Baby will do just about anything, even take her foster parents, Mary and Fred's, most prized possession -- a sled dog.Her life is spiraling out of control, and drug dealings and addictions eventually lead Bobby straight behind bars.

Baby is once again abandoned, this time with nothing but a pack of cigarettes to her name.

What path is Baby going to take? Her new life of safety, or a life of running and sleeping on the streets, using drugs?

BABY tells a great story of real life adventure.I recommend it to everyone, especially those who are interested in stories dealing with important "What if?" issues.
