1-0 out of 5 stars Inane Prose
I am a mom of two little ones and an early childhood teacher and I must say this is book is so awful it actually makes me mad. It's like the author was trying to write some artsy-fartsy poetry book for toddlers?!I love introducing poetry to very young children but the prose in this book is so inane, it's ridiculous. The illustrations are lovely and unique- like construction paper cut-outs. I'm going to cut up the book and use the illustrations for our Winter and snow discussions instead.I've never ever written a negative comment about children's books actually- that's how much this book frustrates me!

3-0 out of 5 stars Cute Book for the Very Young - a review of "Frozen Noses"
The verse in this book is not all that great (see example below), but it does cover the essentials of a snowy winter with colorful cut paper pictures.Children bundle up, make and throw snowballs, make a snowman, sled (no helmets), ice skate, fall down (a lot :) and then have cocoa and a nap (wahoo!).

Text example for your perusal:

Lace my skates up
Tie them tightly
Ready, steady
I won't fall

Slide, collide
Get good at gliding
Hit a skid
Whoops!All a-sprawl!

Three Stars [C+].The colorful artwork is the best part of this book. The text is okay and would be a nice book to snuggle down with on a frosty, snowy day.Age range:four and under.

4-0 out of 5 stars Frozen Noses
"Frozen Noses" is a book about children who bundle up to go outside and play on a cold winter day. They throw some snowballs, build a snowman, and go sledding. They also go ice skating, fall a few times, but get right back up and keep playing. Then they all go back inside and enjoy a nice cup of cocoa by the fire. The book teaches you to bundle up, keep warm, and have fun.
This book is for children from the ages of 2-6. It was a cute book. It has fun pictures and would keep a younger child interested.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent winter fare
"Frozen Noses" features beautiful opaque cut-paper pictures of multiethnic children and their dog frolicking in the snow. The plot is simple but pleasing for preschoolers - the kids bundle up, go out, make a snowman, sled, skate, fall down, and come back in to get warm. The story is told in curt rhyming verses, that sometimes strain a bit in ways that small kids won't understand (a hat is a "proper topper," for example), but the main pleasure of this book is its visual aspect. Good winter fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple childhood pleasures
When adults look out the window and see snow, they may think of shoveling, spinning tires, and wet footprints in the house. When children see snow, they see sledding and sliding and building snowpersons. That's what the children in this book go outside to do.Adults and children alike, however, can enjoy the universal pleasure of sipping cocoa by the fire when they come inside to get warm! This is a warm story for families to share in front of the fireplace - or the space heater - whatever you have available to help get cozy on a winter day. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars interesting little book
Looks like it would be an older book-but no it's new-if you are into vintage wooden snow sleds you will find it interesting-I did

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good book
This is a nice little book that looks great on my coffee table and I've had a few guests flip through it already. I found the articles on the history of sledding and different styles of sleds especially interesting. Sledding has been a favorite pass-time of mine for as long as I can remember and it's great to have a book that celebrates that (as opposed to the many that focus only on skiing.)

However, I'm not one of those people who all but refuses to give a perfectly good product a five star rating. It's just that the main reason I bought this book was when I found out that it had an entire section on "building a better sled". I'm an avid do-it-yourselfer and am in the process of building my own sled so I had to get the only book out there that could really help me at the moment. However, the section turned out to be a very general story of how the author began his sled building company. That section was really of no help.

Still, I'm glad I bought this book and would definately reccomend it to a friend!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This is a wonderful book!I purchased it for my 17 year old daughter who will be attending college in the north where they get a lot of snow. She loved it!I love the "old" look of the book.It brought back memories of the wonderful books I read as a child.I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting little book on sledding...

4-0 out of 5 stars Nicely Illustrated
My son already has D.W.'s Perfect Present, which is a great Christmas story. When I saw Arthur and the Big Snow in the store, I was happy to snatch up yet another wintry tale!

A huge snowfall dumps on Elwood City and Arthur wants to meet his friends at the big hill. However, Mr. Read won't allow Arthur to go with his friends because D.W. is to small to walk in the snow; he tells Arthur that they must wait until the snowplow comes through.

Arthur decides to go outside to play in the snow, but D.W. wants to come along. She asks Arthur to help her get dressed and they no more get out in the snow and D.W. begins yelling that she wants to go inside NOW because she can't move in the deep snow.

D.W. then asks Arthur to play some games, but Arthur wants to go back out in the snow by himself. He plays several games with his sister, but by the time the plow roars by, Francine calls to let him know that he missed both the sledding AND the hot chocolate.

Arthur is, of course, very disappointed. When his Dad asks him if he's ready to go sledding, he dejectedly says that it's too late. His Dad pulls out a new sled and Arthur excitedly agrees.

The Reads' have the hill all to themselves and they settle back home, sharing hot chocolate. Mrs. Read says "Sometimes, good things are worth waiting for."

As with other Arthur stories published by Little, Brown, and Company, Arthur and the Big Snow features glossy pages, colorful illustrations, and easy-to-read print. It's great for a bed time story, as well as for beginning readers wanting to practice. There is also a "board game" on the back of the book called Downhill Racers, which is played using pennies or coins. (Heads moves one space, tails move two). These back-of-the book games are always a neat plus to the Arthur books.

My only reservation about this book is the unanswered question as to WHY Arthur had to wait for snowplow so D.W. could tag along. There was no backstory explaining that Mr. and Mrs. Read were busy with projects and Arthur had to babysit (although Mrs. Read WAS sitting at the computer with tax books on her lap). I actually felt sorry that Arthur was stuck at home at D.W.'s every beck and call. If it were me, I'd rather hang out with my friends!

So, plot-wise, I think D.W.'s Perfect Present is better. However, both are lavishly illustrated and they're always well worth the affordable price, in my opinion. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars First Snow
First Snow was a delightful story about a mouse family that goes sledding on the first day it snows. One little mouse is frightened but eventually learns how fun it is to sled down a big hill.It is a wordless picture book which allows children to "read" this book a little differently every time. This book is my 3 year old daughters favorite. It's wonderful to see how she translates the pictures into words based upon the expressions on the faces of the mice. She imagines what they are saying and how they are feeling. I thouroughly enjoy "reading" it with her every night to see what different ideas she finds. I beleive it is a great learning tool for preschoolers. ... Read more
