Product Description

When Tina Basich grabbed her rented snowboard and headed to the mountains in Lake Tahoe, snowboarding wasn't even considered a sport ... yet. It was the beginning, and could have easily gone the way of many other sports and become dominated by male-driven competition.

But not with Tina on the scene ...

Comments like "You're pretty good ... for a girl" only pushed her harder to be the best and to prove she was more than just a token player on the slopes. Representing for women everywhere, she became a snowboarding all-star, started her own signature board and clothing lines for women, founded Boarding for Breast Cancer, and followed her heart, which led her on the adventure of a lifetime.

This is her story.

4-0 out of 5 stars Book came in great condition but little late.
I would say book came in great condition but little late. I guess because of X-mas time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good for a Girl is entertaining and humorous
I have never been snowboarding and I loved the book. The author is an accomplished snowboarder who tells her personal story in an entertaining, personal, and humorous way. At times the book reads as if the author is talking to you as a personal friend sharing her adventures. There are some very funny stories in the book. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
I read this after reading P3: Pipes, parks, and powder. At first, I thought of it as the girl version of Todd Richard's book (P3) and didn't want to read it.But I read it, it's not just for girls.Any boarder will enjoy it.Maybe the pink cover turns off guy readers, ha, ha.

3-0 out of 5 stars cant right good
Having graduated college, I think I was too well educated to read this book.It was so, like, 7th graderish. This book isn't very well written. It jumps around a bit, leaving the reader confused. For example, Tina talks about how she got a car soon after getting her drivers license, but then mentions that she crashed it a year later. So after reading about how she crashed it, she continues talking about how she drove everywhere.Fortunately, you can tell that Tina starts to mature a little bit as a writer near the end of the book. The other problem that I had with this book is that she tries to make women seem more disadvantaged than they really are. While there are 10x less professional women snowboarders, there are 10x as many male snowboarders, so it all evens out.Women have been a big part of snowboarding since it's inception, so I am therefore not convinced of her adversity. She does get credit back, though, because of her participation in the Boarding for Breast Cancer program.Overall, I'd skip this book and read "Hawk: Occupation: Skateboarder" if you are into the "Action" sports books or "Swimming to Antarctica" if you want a women-pushing-the-sport type of book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beginner Snowboarder
This book is awesome.I opened it and finished it in its entirety in one sitting. It was such an exciting read.I just recently started snowboarding and am totally psyched about it.Tina's changes in life are definitely relatable. She is an inspiration to me because there are so many girls who side-track themselves due to heartbreaking, intellectually debased boys.I've seen it happen all too often and has happened to me as well.To stay focused on your own goals and not let life get in the way is so difficult.Guys seem to have no problem doing it, but she proved that girls can pull it together too.
oh yeah, the foo fighters suck. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Too Technical
This book is way too technical for the average reader. If you are a professional, then you should check it out.I'm not really sure if it would be helpful since I'm not a professional, but the book really analyzes every aspect of performance in snowboarding. It is not too enjoyable if you are not that into snowboarding and even if you are, you would not probably want to read it.Pictures are nice, though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely in-depth reference to snowboarding
I received this book as a birthday present. After browsing the table of contents you start to realize its depth. It's broken down into three major sections:racing, freeriding, and freestyle.

The book goes over the mechanics, but also heavily focuses on mental aspect of snowboarding. It explains methods on how to visualize and execute. It even recommends external activities, like Yoga, to bridge the gap between body and mind.

I felt the best value of this book were the sections on overcoming and controlling fear after a serious injury.Which, unfortunately, I know a lot about. It also stresses the seriousness of properly rehabilitating after injury/surgery.

This book is for people serious about snowboarding. It probably isn't suited for 11 year old children. After reading some sections, I almost felt like I need further explanation from a psychologist to completely understand what I was reading.

Overall, great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT

5-0 out of 5 stars It's all about the How-To
I'm usually pretty skeptical of How-To books, but this one was recommended to me. It's quite cool. I was able to understand it, and it actually helped me get started snowboarding. I can seriously recommend this book for regular people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks Mr. Goldman
Awesome book. Used it to help decide what equipment to get and to teach my girlfriend the basics. The writing style is easy to read and the contents are great for an introduction. The descriptions and pictures of slipping, edging and traversals made were really illuminating, and instructions on riding powder made me want to go lay some tracks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative, clear and descriptive--a must for snowboarders
Goldman knows the sport of snowboarding and does a fantastic job of providing all the essential information anyone else would need to know to enjoy snowboarding. From equipment to accessories to getting started basics and advanced skills, I enjoyed reading the book and felt I learned something new on every page. The photos and drawings were also super helpful to me.Goldman is a fine writer who undoubtedly loves to snowboard and I walked away from having read the book feeling Goldman's enthusiasm for the sport and wishing it were already winter. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not the Best Ski Guide for Europe
The Time Out group is well known for its New York and London entertainment magazines as well as its expanding list of guides to popular destination cities across the globe. The audience for this burgeoning media empire is the young urban professional ready to take on the world, but with a limited budget.

For 2004-2005 season, Time Out unveiled its first ski and snowboard guide ever: a 160-page magazine format overview of the top 74 ski resorts in Europe. For each resort covered, the guide offers 1-2 pages of basic information on ski slopes, restaurants, and accommodations. In some cases, a difficult-to-read piste map is included and in others, a photograph taken from the resort's web site. A sidebar column contains some information on ski pass prices, transportation services, lessons, and useful web sites and telephone numbers. The sidebar also rates each resort by snow quality, suitability for various ability levels, off-piste possibilities, scenery, resort charm, and apres-ski.

In addition to its "destination" overviews, the guide contains several feature articles on such subjects as discount airlines serving London, off-piste safety, and Europe's best terrain parks. There's also a chapter on hidden gems and skiing in Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, and Andorra. Like many English language ski guides of Europe, the Time Out guide caters to a UK-based audience, which is generally more price sensitive than the American audience and also on the lookout for shorter weekend getaways.

In terms of overall usefulness, this new volume is less informative than Where to Ski an Snowboard Worldwide: The Reuters Guide, edited by Chris Gill and Dave Watts. Whereas The Reuters Guide contains a lot fresh content about a resort written by real skiers, the information in the Time Out Guide reads more like a ski resort brochure. In it, you can find boilerplate information, but critical insights and fresh knowledge are rare. In some cases, I doubted if the writers had ever visited some of the resorts described. It discusses St. Mortiz, for example, without mentioning one of its greatest culinary institutions: the Chesa Veglia restaurant in Badrutt's Palace Hotel. When describing St. Anton, it does not provide readers with even a basic understanding of the mountain's layout and how best to avoid crowds and bottlenecks. Ischgl, one of the largest resorts in Austria, only receives a page of discussion. If that were not enough, the guide is full of grammatical errors and typos.

These shortcomings suggest that the guide may have been rushed to production. For next season, I suggest that its editors call a "time out," and re-evaluate this guide from the ground up. Skiers and snowboarders can always benefit from more guidebooks, but success in this competitive market demands fresh ideas, new illustrations, and better writing.

2-0 out of 5 stars Its not a book
I recently received this in the post and although the content is fairly good i would like say that it should not be advertised as a book as it is really a magazine - this was a disappointment to me as I didnt feel it was worth the price. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars All You Need to Know to Start Snowboarding
Chickie Rosenberg's unbridled enthusiasm for snowboarding is apparent on every page of her book. She can convince even the most reluctant winter sports un-enthusiast to try the great sport of snowboarding, by overcoming the objections of "it's too cold" and "I don't know how."

They won't even be able to use the "I'm too old" or "I'm afraid of heights" excuse once they realize that Chickie STARTED snowboarding over a decade ago at age 50 and that she is also afraid of heights. This book contains inspiring advice about facing down fears in order to enjoy a great sport, from an experienced snowboard instructor. It's also filled with the practical advice new riders need to do things right. Helpful websites are listed too.

I love this book and will be giving copies to my friends who want to learn to ride. I am already a snowboard enthusiast. ... Read more

Reading is not my favorite thing in the world, but when I see a good book I actually read it.This book is called, "Ultimate Snowboarding".The book tells about good skills and techniques you need to now about snowboarding. It has good trick tips also in the book.I rate this book 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for Extreme Bookshelves
Billy Miller has compiled a collection of stories written by some of the best writers in the world of snowboarding. He's taken them and organized them in such a way that any newbie (beginner) or seasoned snowboarding pro will walk away having learned something about the sport they love or hope to learn to love. Learn the history of the sport, and then continue onward into the personal lives of some of the sports icons. Learn basic and advanced tricks all to the tune of rocking full color photography, albeit some of it slightly outdated. Consider it a history lesson in extreme with an inside look at a snowy white snowboarding world that is now as common as MTV, but was once a renegade outlaw sport. Take it to the limit. Billy Miller and his team of contributors did. You won't be disappointed in this book, I thought I knew everything there was to know about snowboarding. Mr. Miller proved me wrong. ... Read more
