Product Description

The Golden Age of snowmobile manufacturing was from 1968-1976 with a gradual slow down leading to 1982. During this time literally hundreds of snowmobile manufacturers sprung up and then disappeared.

This book is a look at all the most interesting, rare, or collectible snowmobiles from that time period. The big names like Arctic Cat, Polaris, Ski-Doo, Yamaha, John Deere, Scorpion, Snow-Jet, Mercury, Rupp, Moto-Ski, to the many small-company brands like Allied, Boa Ski, Chaparral, Evinrude, Harley Davidson, Johnson, Polaron, Sears, Skiroule, Sno Prince, Viking, and even includes a chapter of collectible racing snowmobiles in the hobby, like the 1977 Arctic Cat Z that turned Arctic Cats racing program around, and treasures like a 1973 Chaparral grass drag sled or a 1974 Roll-O-Flex called The Wild One.

This book would be a benefit to anyone interested in sleds from this time period or looking to buy a more collectible sled from this era.

It was purchased for a friend and he just keeps raving and raving about the book. He showed it to several of his friends and they want to borrow it. This book was a great hit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great primer on vintage snowmobiles
I thoroughly enjoy this book. It's got lots of great photos and brief descriptions ofa wide array of sleds-both well-known and obscure.Don't expect it to list every model from every maker there ever was-no single volume could do that. But what the book does deliver is a good cross-section of the many interesting sleds that were produced during the first boom years of snowmobiling in North America. This is an easy-reading picture-book so attractive that even some of my friends and family with little experience or interest in snowmobiles got drawn into it.I highly recommend it.

Great stuff! It left me wanting more. I hope there is a sequel in the future, because it left me wanting more. There is so much more to be written on this subject.

Product Description
It is the world's best-known national park, with a controversy that no amount of snow can bury. Rosy-cheeked snowmobilers extol the glories of riding through a winter wonderland, while environmentalists decry the noise, the air pollution, and the harm to wildlife. There seems to be no room for compromise.

In this first book-length study of winter use in any national park, Michael Yochim examines the longstanding conflict between the National Park Service and groups who favor or object to snowmobiles in Yellowstone. By illuminating the fundamental drivers of the controversy--American values, community identity, industry influence, and political tampering with policy--he doesn't merely document the debate but shows how increasingly politicized battles have taken a toll on the autonomy of the NPS and its ability to protect the park.

The debate itself, Yochim observes, is not over whether one mode of transportation is more appropriate than another, but whether it is more important to embrace nature's sacredness or one's personal liberties. With motorized snow travel sanctioned for forty years, snowmobilers see their sport as an expression of freedom and rugged individualism, and attempts to curtail their activity as un-American. Conversely, environmentalists see parks as sacred space, so snowmobiles to them are inappropriate in what they regard as a temple. Yochim discusses the political and legal intricacies of arguments on both sides in a balanced presentation--one that does not spare the NPS from close scrutiny--and he examines influence on the Park Service from both political parties. Along the way, he teases out the role of science as a policy guide, the place of values in the controversy, and the influence of strident personalities in the debate.

In tracing the history of motorized winter recreational use of the park from the earliest days of winter visitation in the 1930s to the present, Yochim shows that what is at stake is more than recreation in one park but the very mission of the NPS--and whether political machinations will keep it from protecting the park and accomplishing that mission. Yellowstone and the Snowmobile allows readers to better understand this controversy, one that is unlikely to go away any time soon. ... Read more

Product Description

The Golden Age of snowmobile manufacturing went from 1968 to 1976. During this time literally hundreds of snowmobile manufacturers sprang up and then disappeared. Some of these manufacturers were huge blue chip corporations like John Deere. Others were small forgotten companies building sleds in home garages such as the Snow Bug. The collector market for vintage snowmobile items can be easily compared to the interest in vintage motorcycles, farm tractors, gas station items, vintage boats and outboards and similar motorized vehicles. This book covers snowmobile-related items which are now collectible—vintage brand-specific clothing, advertising items, dealer signs, oil containers, snowmobile board games, snowmobile cuff links, and much more. Collectors new and old are trying to determine what an item is worth and if it is collectible. This is the first book to fill that need.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for the beginner collector.
The book provides a broad, yet overall shallow perspective in the snowmobile collectibles market. His section on oil and gas cans is quite extensive, yet barely scrapes the surface on clothing, which I purchased the book anticipating more there. However, a book could be written on clothing alone, and I give Mr. Bertolino credit for tackling the subject as a whole, and for creating a book that was long overdue.Thanks.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful for the first time buyer interested in older sleds
Have rented snowmobiles before, but now am in the market for buying and wanted a reference book to understand what's involved in owning a sled.Folks who are aware of Chilton's reputation in automotive repair will be right at home in this manual. It's technically written and has lots of specifics for maintenance of sleds and all the other necessities of safe riding from proper helmets and apparel to 'must have' kits to bring along in an emergency out on the trail.Even if you have no plans to do your own servicing, after studying this manual you will be able to hold an intelligent conversation with your snowmobile shop mechanic. There's a section on towing a trailer for your sleds that helps in getting to the trails, too.

Since we are interested in a used sled, the book has been very helpful.Using newspaper style paper, there are no glitzy color photos except the covers; the black & white prints are small but sharp and show lots of detail. If you are in the market for a new sled, it might be a bit of a disappointment with a 1999 copyright date, hence the 4-stars. It does need to be updated as there is little mention of 4-stroke engines and the newer features found on the latest snowmobiles. This is a good study reference book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good intro
If you are new to snowmobiling and want to learn how to repair basic systems on your sled this is the book for you.Not advanced, but good quality maintenance and repair examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, decent snowmobile book
This is a Chilton's general snowmobile guide. I'm not usually impressed with manuals as they are usually vague and dry, but this isn't bad. It's actually alot of fun to leaf through if you're a new snowmobiler, or a veteran of sledding. It was issued in 1999 and has most (if not all) 1999 snowmobiles in it from the "big 4".

The 1st chapter is an intro to setting up shop with tools, hardware and a conversion chart. (Metric to standard,etc.). Chapter 2 is how to chose a snowmachine. 3 has riding gear and 4 is general engine & drivetrain maintenance. Even though the manual is broad in scope, it's good at theory of operation & how things work. Chapter 5 is chassis maintenance, while 6 is riding preparation. 7 is all accessories for a snowmo and 8 is cleaning. Chapter 9 covers troubleshooting for all systems (engine, drive, electrical, etc.) and chapter 10 is storage.

Although this manual/book is not model specific it does make a great supplement for a model specific manual. It's easy to read and the humor in it is the icing on the cake. A great deal on Amazon.com, I might add.

5-0 out of 5 stars Let It Snow!
As I was new to the sport I wanted some background. I ordered the book not really knowing what to expect, it turned out to be a great source of information. Keeping it basic and interesting is a very difficult balance, the authors managed really well. Lots of pictures to illustrate a well written text is central to this large paperback. This is not a new book however, it is still relevent in 2003/4; it is well worth the money and I will keep my eyes open for a future rewrite. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative and concise
It's been sometime since i purchased this "how to" book. And i must have repaired (and fabricated) over a hundred pieces by now with the knowledge gained from this very well written book. It should be titled,
"A-Z of Plastic Bodywork" as it is all one really needs to identify and repair plastic body work.

If you're a DIYer and/or in the business (collision repair, motorcycle fairing repair, etc.) than this is a must have book.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to Repair Plastic Bodywork
New book, easy to read and find certain areas in the book.Explains everything very well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpfull!!
I bought this book just out of curiosity and I ended up really using it. You just have to get over the fear of trying it and go for it. At the moment I am busy restoring an old ZX-10 fairing. The book tells you a lot about different situations and how to get around them.

What makes it even better is that the last chapter or so shows you how to prepare the plastic for paint. It answers a lot of questions on what prep work is needed and what paint can be used.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very detailed, greatly organized, and very helpful book
This book has helped me learn more about plastics in general and all the items available out there for repairing. I have asked many people that have experience in repairing plastics and it's interesting to find out there is a lot of people that do not really know about the materials that they are working with. The book breaks down every type of plastic material that you will come across in the automotive industry, some history on them, how to identify the plastic, different repair methods, and different repair materials.

Everything is nicely organized and easy to follow. Thanks Kurt Lammon for taking the time out to create this book and helping a lot of people out there looking to learn.

5-0 out of 5 stars 2 thumbs up.The "How To"book for plastics repair.
I bought this book [and later the "how to" video].

As far as I know, this is the only layman's plastic repair book out there.[I'm sure there are engineering books on the subject, but I only want to know how to fix plastic, not formulate it].

A great balance of how-to text with corresponding how-to photos [photos are in full color and are high quality].

An excellent alternative to sending your simple repairs off to someone else to fix.

Depending on the plastic repair to be done, you can probably buy a basic "repair kit" along with this book; and do the job yourself.

I work on all sorts of computer peripherals [like printers].
The reason most every computer and peripheral is so lightweight today [as compared to just 5 years ago] is PLASTIC.

Folks tend to whine about parts being made from "cheap plastic", but just wait until a part breaks and you need to replace it. Those parts are never CHEAP.

The information I learned from this book has saved me having to buy several plastic parts for inkjet and laserjet printers.
If I have both halves of the broke part, I can fix it.

The author of the book is president of Urethane supply company.
[as per the closing page of this book].

I contacted the company after reading this book and the customer support at Urethane supply is excellent.
I asked some questions about a repair not specifically mentioned in the book and their support folks did an "on-the-spot" R&D of the problem and emailed me their results about how to fix the plastic parts involved.

If you want to fix your own plastics, I highly recommend this book.

With just a couple small repairs, I paid for the cost of:
1. this book,
2. their how-to video and
3. the small repair kits used to fix the problems

Product Description

"The Massey snowmobile shot forward, aimed directly at the wooden ramp. It only took a few seconds to cover the distance. He felt the sled start the climb up the ramp, listening to the noise of the rubber track thudding against the rough surface - the machine lifted and flew." This book will be especially fascinating for all readers interested in: sports or history. From Bombardier's first awkward invention to the sleek modern machines, snowmobiles have captured the hearts and imagination of winter enthusiasts across North America. This book traces the early development of this Canadian invention - and then takes you on an adventure to the North Pole, and behind the throttle of a championship snowmobile with Gilles and Jacques Villeneuve.

4-0 out of 5 stars Canadian Adventure
This book is essentially the story of four pioneer Canadians who made history in the early days of snowmobile. They are Joseph Armand Bombardier, Yvon Duhamel, Gilles and Jacques Villeneuve. All four are important figures of that industry for they created, developed and shaped the machines the way we still know them today. The book is short and makes for an entertaining read. I learned a lot of things while reading it and it made me realize how big the sport is in North America.

The story starts with the life of J.A. Bombardier who left us a legacy that extends way beyond his own wildest dreams. But Aksomitis makes it clear for us that he did not invent the snowmobile. Like Galileo who had not himself invented the telescope, but by turning it to the sky for the first time changed our view of the universe for ever, Bombardier and his revolutionary Ski-Doo design altered decisively our perception of winter. The rest of the book summarizes the careers of three racing legends.

Half a dozen pictures illustrate the book and a good bibliography can be found at the back. The writing style is descriptive and fast paced. I read the book in the middle of summer and it made me look forward to next winter! The reason I dropped a star is simply because I wanted more. The book could have been easily twice it's current size if the author had elected to give us more details and explanations. It would have made my pleasure last longer.
